My partner and I was in this part of town yesterday and decided to try this place out for the first time. When we walked in we were greeted by a little white lady with missing teeth and she uttered something I did not understand after asking her to repeat herself twice then I got my partner to find out what she said and all she said was "You can sit anywhere in this room." OKAY. We find a seat then are shortly greeted by our country waitress who takes our drink orders. My entree was Barbecue Pork that came with 3 sides. I chose mac and cheese, baked squash casserole, and cole slaw. My partner got the Fried Chicken Breast which came with 2 sides and a dessert. He chose the cucumbers and onions, lima beans, and some strawberry shortcake thing as a dessert. The food was actually quite GOOD! I felt a little uncomfortable since the establishment was kind of old and didn't seem to be the cleanest, but the food was definitely on POINT! Next time I will skip on the bread basket. The bread was really dry and just overall empty calories. What made me really happy with this place was the fact that they offer FREE REFILLS ON SIDE ITEMS! And you can switch the sides up however you like, you do not have to stick with the same thing. So of course I left there STUFFED and hurting. The price for both me and my partner was an amazingly low $16.50. Which felt like a STEAL. I will definitely give this place another go-around. The menu and vibe may make it seem like a "Cracker Barrel" but that's about all this phenomenal hole in the wall shares with what some would call "gold standard" of southern comfort food. For starters, let's talk convenience. Barbecue Kitchen may as well be a 7-11 bc it is where you need it to be. Convenient to every major highway and the world's busiest airport- in a city as spread out as ATL- this is as convenient as it gets. Along with convenience comes speed... and you won't find yourself waiting for long at Barbecue Kitchen. We were greeted, seated, and both ordered and received our food in less than ten minutes. The prices were cheap and the portions are huge! Which brings us to the final point, food. I had the chopped brisket, coleslaw, sweet potato soufflé & collard greens and it was as f***ing incredible as it sounds. The brisket was hot and moist and their house made BBQ sauce was the perfect accompaniment. The sweet potato soufflé is divine. I filled up and took home basically another whole meal for lunch the next day. For $8 and change. I felt like I should go and give somebody another $10 or something... just out of respect. If you come here with BBQ on the brain, you will probably leave disappointed and unsatisfied. Now that I know better and I think "Southern Kitchen" I have a better appreciation for this establishment. The Fried Chicken Platter which comes with 2 large breasts, 3 sides of your choice and corn bread and biscuits is probably way more than anyone needs to eat. I love the old southern feel to the building and the inside decor. The staff was super friendly and kind. After many questions to my waitress I went with a single BBQ brisket plate, served with 3 sides and 2 biscuits. The food was exceptional, and I am very picky about my BBQ, the baked beans were my favorite side dish. Portions are large so keep that in mind. I only ate 1/2 of my meal and took the rest to go. It's hard to discern whether this place is a typical barbecue diner style or more in line with the ghetto-fabulous style of the surrounding area. As such the service is the standard "what do you want" level that I am coming to expect from the ATL/airport proximity. On to the food. Both our meat options, brisket and pork, were insanely over salted. To the point that it tasted like we were licking a salt pack. Some of my pieces were hyper dry while others were sorta moist. This place is a little hole-in-the-wall southern bbq joint that gives you exactly what they say for that out-in-the-country price. For about $11, I got the half-beef half-pork bbq special. Its served with a biscuits/corn bread, Brunswick stew, coleslaw and baked beans. The bbq was great; it pulled apart easily and the bbq sauce had a nice rich flavor that was not overly sweet. Baked beans had good flavor to it and the Brunswick stew was chunky with bits of meat and corn. The coleslaw was finely chopped and not overly flavorful, but provided a much appreciated contrast to the heavily flavored bbq. In retrospect I should have planned my meal better. I can easily imagine cutting the biscuits in half and spreading the coleslaw on one side and filling it with the bbq would be a delicious self made bbq slider. I would recommend trying that half and half special, but many of the other menu options look good too, and are very cheap. You can get a burger for like $2.50 and other a la cart options range from the $3-5 range while full meals are around $7-10. This is a great place to drop by for a quick, cheap, good southern meal that's very close to the ATL airport. read more

I really enjoyed the BBQ here! The brisket, sides, and peach cobbler dessert were on point. Came here twice during a recent business trip and both times did not dissapoint. Portions are huge so there's no chance of you going home hungry. The staff is the epitome of Southern hospitality. My mom and I went here for an early dinner (around 4:30pm) and as soon as we sat down the waitress told us they were out of fried chicken breast. We found it a bit odd that they were already running out of stuff but shrugged it off. When our waitress returned we asked for the baked hen and dressing... guess what? Yep you guessed it! They were out of that too. We ended up settling for the smoked half chicken instead with Mac and cheese, squash casserole, and sweet potato soufflé. My squash casserole was okay but a little runny. I didn't like the Mac and cheese so I swapped it for banana pudding instead which was pretty good.... and so was the sweet potato soufflé . The smoked chicken was pretty good as well. I've now been to Barbecue Kitchen a few times now and have yet to not leave highly satisfied. Everything I've ordered is decent, the portions are quite large, and the pricing is incredibly affordable. They have a wide variety of menu items including breakfast foods served all day, god barbecue, and vegetables/sides. My favorites have been the hamburger steak with onions and cheese, the smoked Turkey, rib tips, poke beans, and sweet potato soufflé. All of the breakfast is standard fare but their eggs and crispy bacon were awesome the time I ordered them. The servers are generally friendly. I'm not sure how reviews are less than 4 stars, this is not an elegant restaurant nor do they serve complicated food but there are truly minimal cons to BK. It is really good stuff. I don't know how a bad BBQ place would still be around, but this is worth trying. I had the BBQ pork, and the flavor was great. They add a BBQ sauce on top of it, so if you don't like added sauce, then ask for it plain. But you can see the smoke lines in the pork. All the sides I had were great. Cole Slaw, fried okra, and squash casserole. The biscuit was very good; fluffy and buttery. The only complaint I have is that they are CASH ONLY! Well, at one time we loved this place. Simple country food, nothing fancy, just good. Well now that they have new owners, not so much. The food is not the same quality, they did hire more servers, extended the hours added beer and wine and have become extremely slow! Over 35 min to get or food in a mostly empty place, hash browns not brown at all, (we asked for extra crispy), omelet half cooked, biscuits, gravy and grits COLD! And the biscuits are not the "made in house" they used to be. If this was a one time thing or if they were busy I could understand, but this is the third and last time! I have eaten at Barbecue Kitchen several times through the years and the food has always been good. I am very disappointed at my experience I had today. I went in to purchase a few ham steaks for my Easter dinner. While I was waiting I decided I would have breakfast. Well upon checking out the cashier who was not extremely friendly when I walked in asking me if I wanted to pay that much for ham steaks and I said absolutely ,that was the reason I drove to the restaurant. She went ahead and rang my breakfast separate from my ham steaks ??? Why two transactions on my credit card. So I tipped on my breakfast receipt for the server who was good. Did not tip on my Togo ham steak order. Well the cashier turned around said something to my server and grabbed my tin of ham steaks which was super hot burnt my hands I asked for a bag and the cashier turned again grabbed a bag slapped it on the counter no thank you no nothing but a not so nice attitude. I could tell this cashier was not happy I did not tip for my ham steak order. On my way out I mentioned to my nice server I felt the cashier was not happy I did not tip for my ham steaks so she said please wait. I waited and she got the owner of this restaurant so I told her my concern and she definitely did not see my point of view ,she actually told me most people tip the cashier and I needed to go do my research on tipping. Wow this totally blew me away after telling her all of my experience I had even after tipping for the service I received for my breakfast. She did not care even after I told her about my burnt hands she did not care no apology she said she could grab some card board. Even after telling her never even received a offer of a bag or a thank you. Her final word was people spend more than me and the cashier gets tips. The owner said the cashiers tips goes towards the cooks as well????? I told her I would be telling my friends that work and live in the area know of my experience and she told me tell who I needed to tell,this was the owner. I will definitely not go back and I would highly recommend if you go in after reading this review ,by all means tip the cashier so that the cook can also get paid??? Since this place changed owners it is not the same. Service hit or miss. One waitress in window area of food texting while a couple long timer waitresses working very hard. Asian manager very argumentative. To go food handed to me very hot in tins and no offer to put in a bag. Apparently the cashier expects tips???????? Been going here many years and already had 100+ responses that folks I know will be dining somewhere else. This continued attitude and rudeness to customers will eventually catch up for these owners.
