We visited Barefoot Reflexology in Watertown to celebrate our anniversary -- our first visit in over ten years, when we had been regular customers. We will not be returning!!! From the moment we walked in, two staff members were arguing openly and continuously. There was no attempt to create any kind of relaxing atmosphere: no music, no greeting that acknowledged we were there to unwind. The space smelled unpleasant, the lighting was so dim we could barely see, and the chair coverings appeared heavily worn and felt grimy to the touch. The foot baths were lukewarm. Throughout the session, both practitioners talked non-stop to each other -- again, no music, no calm. My massage therapist applied the same painful stroke repeatedly along what felt like a nerve line on my arm and shin, over and over, to the point where I was wincing and cried out asking her to be please be gentle. That did not make a difference. My spouse's experience was worse: her practitioner struck her feet and legs with a force and rhythm that felt less like reflexology and more like frustration with her coworker being physically redirected at the client! We were also required to pay before the session -- $50 per person -- which is unusual and, given what followed, felt like a red flag we should have heeded. I see from other recent reviews that our experience is not an outlier. That's deeply unfortunate. This was once a place we trusted and recommended, albeit a decade ago. My wife and I have gift certificates dated 2019. Gift certificates in Massachusetts are good for 7 years. We went today to redeem them. The owner said he purchased the business in 2022 and did not have to honor the certificates. When the business was purchased it included all assets and liabilities including these gift certificates. The Massachusetts Attorney Generals Office has been contacted and a complaint made. I would not use the company. read more

Been here a few times , always enjoyed it..ystrdy brought a friend as a treat..it was ok..not so much reflexology, more like a foot rub but we had been walking for a few hrs and I thought this would be a nice experience for my friend. I usually tip 20% but lately I have been horrified by the presumption that I am obligated to do so. As I felt, the service wasn't up to par .I decided 15% was enough!! Couldn't believe it when I was told by a very annoyed woman: 20%..I had paid cash and was tipping each person 15%. Message - It was good. I've certainly had better, but usually are more upscale spas. I certainly felt like I got a nice message for what I paid. Atmosphere/Cleanliness/Ambience -It wasn't dirty but I certainly saw a bit of grim around. I think if they spent just a little bit more time or attention cleaning, it would really up the standards. Customer Service -The customer service was atrocious, specifically when checking out. The service as I mentioned, cost $35 and I told them to put $45 on my card ($10 in tip, which is well over the customary 20%). They ended up charging my card $50, which I promptly pointed out. Suddenly, they didn't speak English (despite the fact that they spoke it fine two seconds ago when they told me how much it cost and asked me if I wanted to leave a tip). After much back and forth, and once they realized I wasn't going to let it go, they apologize and told me they'd apply the $5 to my next visit. I told them no, and after more back and forth and me threatening to do a change back (it's the principle of thing at this point) they finally gave me $5 back in cash. This was a horrible way to end, what was supposed to be, a relaxing experience. NIghtmare experience. My wife likes foot massages so we get a lot of them. On Tuesday, we had the worst foot massages EVER here. I had a kid who clearly wasn't trained AT ALL, who basically just rubbed my left foot. I complained and asked for a stronger massage. Well he didn't speak English. Seemed to get the idea, but was not capable. The older gentleman, who met us at the desk was massaging my wife. He didn't speak English either. Another woman came over and asked me what I was saying. Her English was quite limited. The older man, I think is the owner, got up and exchanged with the kid. And then proceeded to TORMENT my right foot, with EXTREME pressure that brought tears to my eyes. My wife said he had a grimace the whole time and was clearly very angry. When asked him to tone it down, he didn't. I felt like I was in a torture chamber. Ridiculous. Then to top everything off, when they end the massage they slap your feet in a reassuring way. In may case, he punched and banged my feet so hard they have hurt for several days. WE WILL NEVER GO BACK THERE and Neither should you. You don't treat customers this way. My wife said, the kid did nothing for her foot either when we switched. She didn't want to complain after I made my displeasure as clear as possible for non English speakers. She insisted I write this review given how extreme the treatment I received was that she witnessed. They have a couple other people who work there that seem to know what they are doing. What in the world is going on here! This is by far the worst foot massage I have ever received. Where do I start! I arrived with a friend and encountered a woman who clearly had a language barrier who appeared to be yelling at us. I asked for a special they were running and she basically told me that I was going to get the service she was pointing to. Ok, no problem.....concerning! We are then ordered to sit in chairs that were cold and appeared to have towels on them that may have been used over and over again that day. That same female started asking me to pay for the service first, no problem. Except their credit card machine wasn't working. They asked me for another credit card, which also didn't work. The female called someone on the phone who spoke english and was able to tell me it was their machine and thwy were fixing the connection. Credir card then worked and down hill we went from here! We were then instructed to move into chairs the customers before us were sitting in. The customer before me was chased out by the female I first encountered. I believe she was upset because he didn't tip her......I now understand why he didn't. However, she chased him out the door until he finally just walked away from her. Now it's my turn for my "reflexology" foot massage! I need an emoji for this one! She started rubbing my shoulders like my 5 yr old grandson would do. Concerned, I just asked her to skip that part, hoping my feet would receive better service. She started rubbing my feet in a similar pattern. REFLEX WHAT! REFLEXOLOGY WHERE!!!!! She was giving my feet a 5 yr old rub! What is going on! I am so patient and can find a silver lining in just about anything......but there wasn't any silver lining here! I forgot to add one of the very important things in my review. My friend and I went, sat down. First time there today. This place is not a fancy spa but it's nicely and quietly arranged. There are rows of chairs separated by curtains. So everyone is very quiet. The price for one hour is $35 dollars (thank heaven), and it starts with a foot soak and a head massage. Then shoulders and neck. Then it's time for the feet. Oh. My. God. I don't normally write reviews, especially negative ones but this was just ...so.bad. I want to start by saying they did an excellent job of maintaining good measures for COVID. I didn't care that it was not the nicest place in the world but I also could barely communicate with anyone there. The women at the front desk asked me three times what my name is and if I had an appointment (I did and was 10 min early). She showed me where to go sit in the massage area and so I did. A man rushed by to get his PPE (mask and visor) and then 5 min later reappeared with a foot bin full of room temperature water that did not look or feel like anything was in it. He didn't greet me in any way and just told me to sit on the ottoman and put my feet in the bin. It was just really awkward to have a complete stranger that is providing such a personal level of service not even really speak to you before or during the services were being provided. I was super uncomfortable. Aside from that, the shoulder and back massage made me feel even more awkward because he just checked in and say "this ok?" (As in is this pressure ok). When I said yes I like a lot of pressure and not soft, he suddenly lighted the pressure to very soft. So I had to say oh I'm sorry I said I like pressure and he went back to hard pressure. I think I'm very understanding to language barriers but he did not have basic conversational English. I work out and consider myself strong but this little man full on destroyed my back and arms. Three days later and I am still so sore that I have a tension headache. I don't know that he has proper massage training because never in my life have I gotten a deep tissue massage that has left me feeling this way. I just returned from my massage a 60 minute massage from this location it was the most horrifying experience. The masseuse named John was very rough I felt like I was a piece of me being tenderize I told him it hurt told him gentle gentle he still continued he then poured cold oil on my body and rubbed it in next thing you know which was the most horrifying part of it all he was behind me declined up on top of me and started rubbing my back I then said are you on top of me he responded is it OK I said no not OK!!!! Little known fact about Johnna M. As huggable, squeezable, and generally touchy feely as I am, deep tissue massages, be by strangers or by friends, tend to skeeve me out. So when the lovely Dawn E. suggested I accompany her for a 90 minute foot and leg massage with bonus neck, arm and back work, why did I say yes? A) I like to live outside my comfort level. B) I was excitingly anticipating a certain birthday party that evening and thought this might take the edge off and C) I desperately was trying to motivate myself to get a pedicure and thought if an hour and a half of this didn't make me want to get my quite literally rose smelling feet looking good, what would? Reflexology Part I. Deep tissue upper body massage while soaking your feetsies in rose scenting water. Loved the hot water soak, appreciated the rubbies, though still a bit nervous. At one point it got a little too intense for me and Dawn, seeing my grimace, asked her to take it back a notch. I am not so assertive. Hour and a half of getting my feet and entire legs rubbed while relaxing in a comfy armchair with ambient lighting and music. Felt good...oh so good...MIND BLOWINGLY AMAZING...and then I fell asleep. I am not exaggerating even a little bit when I say that the horrible man wreaking of cigarette smoke who gave me this "massage" simply SMASHED my tender upper back into the table for 45 minutes straight. Needless to say, I am in excruciating pain. When I tried to lift my head and tell me he was hurting me, several times, he forcefully pushed me back down and said "okay okay." He pulled my hair, telling me I have "good hair." Face up, he grabbed at my stomach and sides, when I said no. Apparently, it's "good for your liver." I've been to this place several times, and have enjoyed myself each time. They work on you in this separate room--you've got your own reclining chair and ottoman, and this space is divided by curtains, so every two chairs, I think, has their own "area." When you start, you begin soaking your feet in warm water that has rose petals in it. Pretty romantic. Haha. While you're seated on the ottoman, and your feet are soaking, the masseuse will work on your neck and shoulders and arms for 15 minutes, and then... the best part, 45 minutes of relaxing in the recliner, and having your feet rubbed and worked like nobody's business. I didn't even realize I had so many knots in my SOLES. But I always do. Probably because of all that walking people tend to do in the summer, especially with flip flop-style sandals on. Anyway, it's only $35 per hour, so I always end up tipping them generously... I mean, they were pampering me for a pretty long time, and I appreciate it! The only thing I have a tiiiny gripe about is that sometimes it's distracting to be so close to your fellow patrons, but I mean, what can you do when ten different people want foot reflexology done? Based on some of the reviews here, I was a bit wary of what to expect. However, I was pleasantly surprised to find a very nice, clean spa. Everyone was very nice and the service was great. I had the foot massage, which is a really nice affordable treat when you don't want to spend $$$ on a full-blown massage. It begin with a really nice shoulder/neck/scalp massage, followed by foot massage, for 60 minutes. I was really happy that the massage therapist was strong, since I tend to like deep tissue and was concerned it might be too light. My boyfriend got the Tui Na massage, which he said was pretty good--- not the best he's ever had and it did hurt a bit the next day (maybe more than it should). I would maybe say just stick the reflexology. A few tips: 1. Consider bringing earplugs - overall the experience and music was really relaxing. However, one customer came in and had a really loud voice. The therapists told her to quiet down (you're separated from your neighbor with a large silk screen, but it's not totally sound proof), however, a spare pair of ear plugs could have quickly remedied the situation. Might be something to consider if you end up with a clueless patron nearby. 2. Wear comfortable pants/skirt---- I was a complete idiot and wore skinny jeans. Nothing is sadder than your massage therapist having to almost whip out plyers/tools to help you roll up your jeans for foot massage. 3. Call ahead - We called on our way over and got a reservation, versus people who showed up and had to wait. Better to call and make reservation than having to wait it out. I scheduled a massage at Barefoot for the first time after running my third marathon this past weekend. My physical therapist had recommended going to a place with foot reflexology, and I thought the combination of positive Yelp reviews, both body and foot work, and low prices sounded pretty ideal. You get what you pay for, I guess. Never again. I probably should have been tipped off by the open schedule; I called day-of and got my requested 5:00pm appointment. I scheduled the 90-minute foot and body work package. I have no problem with out-of-the-way places, but the room I was deposited in looked unclean. My first impression was that it was a converted bathroom. Also, the whole place smelled less than great. I was dropped in the room without instruction, and though I've had many massages in the past I was confused about whether I was supposed to just undress or wait for the masseur. As it turns out, I was supposed to undress and cover myself with a sheet that was folded up on the end of the table. The masseur came in, and without asking me about comfort level, desired pressure, or why I was there, began the "massage". I will say that he was a very nice man and I'm sure he was just going through a routine he goes through with everyone. But this was not a massage. This was a weird, slightly awkward rubdown. I was so uncomfortable that, 15-20 minutes in, I asked that the session be cut to 60 minutes. As anyone who has ever recovered from an endurance activity knows, you need to be able to trust that your masseuse knows how the body works and isn't going to hurt you. I want to keep running marathons, and I was legitimately concerned at times that this session was going to do more harm than good. So, in short: Pros: easy to schedule, cheap Cons: not very clean-looking or smelling, thin walls (I could hear everything going on in the place), untrained masseur, lack of professionalism, uncomfortable, can't personalize massage to comfort level. read more

I dont know why I havent ever reviewed this place, its FIVE Stars and then some. This place is friggin' awesome !!!!!! $35/ hour for reflexology plus 15 minutes of deep tissue neck/back massage. I could go here everyday of the week and on occasion have been guilty of going for days in a row. Its not a deep tissue body massage but it is a fine replacement for when short on cash to afford a full massage. I walk out each time feeling calm, relaxed and soothed. The reflexology itself is out of this world, I dont know how or what they do, but I have fallen asleep each time and woken up refreshed, felt lighter and all the tension from my body released. All their therapists are Asian and barely speak any English, but they are excellent at what they do and I have never had to explain anything, they feel your knots and trouble spots and melt the tension away. It is always very clam and quiet in there, but they dont have much for walls, its all just screens, so if you half way into your massage and if someone loud walks-in, it can get annoying. The massage quality was perfect My best friend goes here religiously after work because they are open til 10pm so I really like the ability to go in late at night after a stressful work day when I need to unwind They have a big room where like 10 people are getting a massage at once and the chairs are subdivided into curtained off sections. They don't have you get undressed so wear sweatpants that can roll up. I think it's against their policy for you to take your clothes off, the massage over it. I really enjoyed my massage here, however when leaving I noticed how unsanitary their practices were. They dumped out the water and didn't clean out or sanitize the basins that they had us soak our feet in, they didn't use disposable pillow cases or blankets and instead of switching them they just put them back on the chair. It made me wonder how many people had their heads on the same exact pillow case I had just had my head on. Would I go back? Maybe. I'm new to reflexology but could easily become addicted. After I had an $85 reflexology experience in Brookline last week, I needed to find a schwaggier one on the outskirts as to avoid going broke. My best friend made us appointments here, not knowing what to expect for $35/hour. You can gather from the exterior that this is not a luxury spa and I am okay with that. The chairs are nearly in darkness other than a bit of red lighting, creating a skeevy sexy-time parlor vibe - but again, I did my best to look past this. The chick assigned to me was wearing sassy/sterile-looking berry-colored scrubs and she was very sweet. She instructed me to soak my frozen February feet in some scalding water. What came next was a total surprise because I kinda figured reflexology = feet + hands only. The petite lady massaged my head, neck, shoulders AND THEN she grabbed my shoulders with both hands and kneed my back from top to bottom, which actually felt amazing. Next she pounded on me a little, which I'd have thought would freak me out but it was also perfect. After she thoroughly massaged my legs, she slapped them around a bit. If you are seated in any of the 1st few chairs from the entrance, you'll hear cars zipping by - but try to tell yourself it's the sound of ocean waves and enjoy the instrumental Phil Collins selections with the other random elevatoresque tunes. Never had an experience like this one and cannot wait to go back. Left feeling totally refreshed and relaxed. If I lived up here - I would return sooner than later. Oh. My. God. $35.00 for an hour in complete heaven. This place has a calming, clean, lovely atmosphere. Each "foot massage" chair is separated by a screen, which gives privacy, but can be opened if you are coming with a friend. Screen open or not, you will be so relaxed your mouth will not be able to form words. The technicians are very kind and concerned with your comfort level. I asked for "hard" and it was definitely hard- he asked a few times if I was ok- but it was SOOOO GOOD. You sit and soak your feet for about 15 minutes. While you do this, you are massaged on your back, head, arms, and hands. A nice surprise! Then you lie back in a very comfortable chair and the magic happens. They work on your feet and lower legs and moisturize you right up. It was such, such a good experience. I am giving this place five stars because it was so cheap (I would pay three times as much to do it again, SERIOUSLY), the people were extremely nice and gentle, and the atmosphere was lovely considering the storefront. I received a Barefoot Reflexology session as a Christmas present and decided to use it today. As you walk into the spa someone is there to take you back to your lounge chair. Once seated with your shoes and socks off a big tub of hot mineral water is placed at your feet waiting for you. As you soak your feet someone is giving your shoulders, neck and head a massage finishing up with your arms and hands. The pressure was just right and it really relaxes you for the foot massage. Your feet are dried off as you lay down on the lounge and the foot massage starts. The experience from start to finish was perfect. Very relaxing, very therapeutic, great atmosphere and the therapist was knowledgeable and caring with an intuitive touch. She helped me release the tension and soreness I carried in my feet. This place is a great deal and I will definitely return. I am happy I looked over the Yelp reviews before I went in for my first visit, because everything mentioned on here is accurate. I walked in and the lady behind the desk (through an obvious language barrier) asked me if I had a package. Confused, I told her this is my first visit. She then asked if I wanted full body or just feet. She mentioned the full body was an extra 15 dollars, and I asked how much the feet alone was. She said $35, and then I think she was confused, because she told me they are running a special and she will give me the full body for $35. I said ok, told her I like harder pressure, and waited for my appointment. I was called into the room and a very nice man walked in. Immediately I could smell cigarettes, which another yelper mentioned in an earlier review. However, he has very strong hands and my massage was AMAZING. It's a bit awkward to hear other people getting massages not only in your room but the room next door. But overall, you tune it out and enjoy. Try to come after dinner, it was fairly quiet then. I made it through the entire thing with my eyes closed and as I walking out I mentioned to the "masseuse" that I don't carry any cash and handed him my credit card. I shared the tip amount with him and signed the receipt without double checking the final number (I know, not a good move on my part). When I entered my vehicle and connected my phone to my radio, I noticed a notification from my banking app. I was charged $5 more than the figure I shared.... Now, don't get me wrong, it's $5. I'll live. But the principal here is that this business or at the very least, this individual has a habit of stealing from customers who are trusting of places like this to conduct good business. It's very unfortunate. Before I started this review, I noticed a review from a user by the name of Christina C. It seems Christina experienced the very same thing a few months ago. I can only imagine how many times this has happened without notice or without mention in a public forum. This is the first review I have ever written, anywhere. I felt a responsibility to inform the public about this place. AVOID THIS PLACE. Or at the very least, only bring cash. I will not be returning here. And neither will anyone I know in the Watertown area. Barefoot Reflexology, you need to do better. Stop stealing from the community that supports you. Shame! read more

As a White American women, I'm kind of embarassed by some of these reviews. I've been coming here for years and am pretty satisfied with the place. (And I'm choosey and have had tons of massages in my life ). RE: the strong massages- I like them and they take a lot of skill and work people. What's the problem if they continually check in if you're okay with the strength? Sounds like it's on your end. There is a language barrier with this business, but who cares?- they do the job well, are nice and not expensive and speaking from my experiences, I haven't noticed anything in the sanitation end of things. Seriously, if you're looking for a wallet-friendly relaxation, this is it! My friend and I walked in on a Sunday afternoon without an appointment (walk-ins welcomed) and patiently awaited at the desk. One of the gals that worked there, appeared from behind a curtain and told us to follow her. We were seated at the most-comfortable-chairs-ever! Without even telling her what we wanted, two more gals appeared with hot, herbal foot bathes for us. Immediately, your feet soak while they work your shoulders, back, neck, arms and hands. Oh. My. Gosh. That's not even the best part! You then sit back, in these amazing chairs and reflexology begins! Music is just loud enough and the light setting is perfect for dozing! The only downside to this is other techs or clients do walk by if you're seated by the door BUT everyone is respectful and keeps quiet. Here's the whopper: $35 for ALL of this. Amazing! I toyed with whether or not to write this review. This place is so amazing I really wouldn't be mad if it remained under the radar ensuring that the prices stay low and I can always book an appointment. I came based on the stellar Yelp reviews and this place completely delivered. As a reflexology noob, I was blown away with how great this experience was. I still can't get over the price and how thorough of a job they did. I have spent $35 on way less productive things and will now make it a point to try and keep this in the budget on a more frequent basis. The whole set up of the session makes sense. start with the tension in neck, shoulders, temples, head... work that down to the feet and then deal with the feet/leg. It was the perfect blend of therapeutic+relaxing. I left feeling like a puddle of goo. And I mean that in the best way possible. I can't wait to go back. Few things to mention: *Ample street parking and the bus stop is right in front of the building. *Yelpers weren't kidding. The majority of the employees here do not know a word of English. I asked if they accept tips on a credit card and everyone basically had to stop what they were doing to collaboratively answer my question. I felt bad. Everyone was so nice though. read more

I used to be a regular pre-pandemic. Went back today, for the first time in two years, and it was disappointing. It's new management now. I called ahead for the 90 minute body and foot package ($90 on the website, but I discovered was actually $100 when I was in the salon). The man working at reception, who was also my masseuse, hardly spoke English. He gave a good massage, although somewhat repetitive... which is not surprising since he stretched the back, arms and legs massage out to 90 minutes and completely neglected my feet. When I say 'neglected', I mean that he didn't touch them. This was a large part of the reason I went; why choose a reflexology place otherwise? When I asked him about it during check-out he did not seem to have any idea what I was saying. Next time I go for a foot and body massage, I will go somewhere that actually will give a 'foot and body massage'. I also found the music grating; an Asian-elevator music tune in an endless endless please-make-it-stop loop; a thousand years of Asian music and that's the best this salon can do? I liked it much more under old management; I don't plan on going back. read more

I've gone here may times in the past but hadn't been for over a year. Was always terrific until my last visit several weeks ago. The receptionist insisted I pay in advance and then added, "You give tip?" to which I responded not till afterwards. The man who gave me the massage was rubbing way too deep. At times digging his elbow into my back. It was very painful and I told him to stop, he would for a moment and then start up again. The following day my right arm ached. At one point he felt where my spine was and seemed to make sure he went around it. Scary. At one point he put a pillow on my back and did sort of a humping motion. Just bizarre. He stopped and started on my feet. There were moments of comfort, as his pressure wasn't as deep but it tickled around the toes and the oil was ice cold. I feel disappointed because they have been great in the past. This man had no massage education or touch skills. Worst of all I developed a fungal infection a day or so later. Sadly, I miss the zen atmosphere they had in the past. Can't say I'll be going back. read more

I have come every few months for several years and have had mostly good experiences, but the place seems to be going downhill in terms of the quality of the staff. My husband and I went yesterday, and waited for a fair stretch until two staff came running in the door looking wild-eyed. The man took my husband and seemed competent but rough. The woman started on me, and she had no idea what she was doing, moving randomly from place to place, squeezing and poking sharply and without any plan. I waited to see if she might settle down, but she didn't, so I went up front and as soon as I turned up, the woman at the desk said, "not good? I do..." and came to work in her place. She was not much better, and kept having to get up and leave to answers calls and meet customers. Not relaxing at all. Sad to see. read more

I've been to Hong Kong & China where "foot washing" establishments are very common. I'm sooooo happy to finally find a place that does foot massage more authentically just like they do in Asia! I've tried regular spas/massage places that do reflexology where I just lie on the massage table & they rub my feet...then I pay $100. For $35, you can't beat getting a warm foot soak AND a neck, shoulder, back rub AND the reflexology AND finally shin, calf & thigh massage. You may think it's just a foot massage, but It's an entire whole body experience!!! read more
