Today, I had an appointment with Barenburg Eye Associates on Park Avenue. I had a very pleasant experience with Dr. Hur, Tech Selena & Tech Sharlita. It's refreshing to experience a professional, fast, and friendly service. The office was clean and had such a friendly atmosphere. I don't think I have ever had such a thorough eye exam in my life. Dr. Cohen is great.........however Issue I have is your staff and how unprofessional they are! I dropped off my glasses because my lenses were loose. Sheryl, which many other reviews mention is unprofessional and rude took my glasses, didn't take my information and I just left there completely confused. Monday she calls to tell me glasses are in. 2 days later I drive 45 mins to pick up and they are now missing. Solution ....we will call you when we find them. Perfect and complete waste of my day.... A week later ZERO calls about my glasses after I have left several messages asking for a call back. You should have your staff take customer service classes or find new staff to fit the kindness of the doctor. Its a complete mismatch! Your response on google does not surprise me as you still do not see from the consumers eyes. Once again as many others have mentioned this office lacks customer service. This response is non apologetic with starting as "Let me remind you" Oh and thank you for now telling me after I called the office Friday and today left messages for a PHONE CALL, not a text which mind you was not received on my end at 1:29 pm today. I usually check reviews on Yelp before I visit. I wish I would have before visiting. My mistake.... I visited this location in November because they accepted my vision insurance. The plan was to actually use my benefits before the year ended because I hadn't used it yet. Whelp. I got all of my info from my other Dr sent over prior to my appointment. Received an eye exam and was told that I would be contacted for pricing on my contact lens, as they had to submit the paperwork to insurance. Totally reasonable logic. No call back, so I waited.. I called back a few more times in December after I got a letter from my insurance (still in November) that stated I was approved for lenses. I call again asking what is going on and each time I called I got "the Dr will call you back it's still being worked on." Fast forward to last week, (yes in January) the Dr calls. and tells me that the lenses are going to cost a bit more. But couldn't give me a price and asked 3-4x How much can I pay... lol. this is laughable at this point. I never gave an answer because I felt like I was being gouged. Why are you not telling me how much the lenses are and how much my insurance pays? Makes no sense to me. If you don't understand how insurance works and just assume that the place of business knows you will be fooled. I'm glad I'm not a fool. I would never go back here. Not sure why there are so many bad reviews....I've been coming here for about three years. The staff is sweet, professional and thorough. They even helf my sleeping toddler while I got my screening. Dr. Vekker is very personable and the sweetest ever. She takes her time in appointments to make sure your eyes are working for you the way they should. Maybe I am just familiar with the process and know the routine of eye exams, but usually when you arrive you have the administrative task of updating medical history and other paperwork they may require. You are then called back for a quick eye screening and then eventually called back when the doctor is available to see you. Appointments are usually on time, maybe a few minutes late. You do an actual eye exam, if dilating, that will happen, you talk about medical changes, etc... etc.... If you are picking out frames, it may be tough because there a lot of choices. And also your eyes may be dialated...ask for help. We'll continue to go to Dr. Vekker, her location is conveint ib the office building right next to Barnes and Nobles on Reisterstown Rd. read more

Wow, this place used to be so nice and reading these reviews, I can see its gone downhill. Everything was fine with my routine, annual eye exam until it was time to go and I left realizing that I didn't get my contact prescription. So I went back for it and was very specifically told that I needed to wear my trial contacts for 3 days with the new RX to see if I liked them first, then call back to confirm 1) they worked fine and 2) which brand I preferred, as I was trying a new brand and then I would get a copy. Can they email them? Nope. Fax or in-person pick up only. Really? Who still faxes?? In all my years of getting eye exams, I have never walked out without the ONE thing I came for, my RX so I could then order my lenses. Now I would need to make a 2nd trip to their office for my RX. Not happy! So I just called after the 3-day rule to confirm the new RX is fine. I was told I would also need to confirm which brand I wanted but when I was transferred to the optician and told her I was ready to pick up my Rx, the voice over the phone only said "Mm hmm", I felt I had to remind them of their own instructions and confirmed the RX and preferred brand. The lady over phone never asked for this or said anything about it only 'you can pick them up anytime'. She came off unprofessional and unfriendly So I will pick up my RX today and find another eye place. UPDATE So I went back to pick up my prescription today. They told me to call ahead which I did at about 9am that morning and let them know I was coning by around 12 noon. My hubs double-parked because we thought I'd be in and out. I get there, explain what I need and they make me sign in to see the optician! Apparently she is the only one that can write them on paper and did not do so beforehand. I was asked to take a seat. To pick up the written RX. They tried to explain that since I'd never been fitted with contacts there before, they wanted to make sure and that "most doctors" do it this way. Its the FIRST TIME ever anyone made me wait 3 DAYS then make me sign in just to pick up that piece of paper. What was the point of calling ahead of they could have it ready when I got there. One good thing (earned 1 star for this) -- I was able to get an appointment very quickly as a new patient. However, my experience was very similar experience to the other reviewer. The Ophthalmologist openly shared his disgust with "Obamacare" and the current administration. Not personable at all. He made a point of letting me know my employer-sponsored vision benefit is "crap". Gave his history with the now defunct Maryland Eye Care (not a pleasant experience for him) With eyes dilated, I was "escorted" to their eye wear and *told* I needed to get glasses TODAY. No goodbye, no thank you for your business, he just placed my chart on the table and walked away. Good thing I was with someone who let me know I could request a prescription and take it elsewhere. The workers at the eye wear station were in deep conversation regarding the weather. Then, one of the workers actually said ...that man called my name one too many times today (referring to the Ophthalmologist). Rude and unprofessional. Once I was finally acknowledged, I was asked for my insurance info and pointed to a rack of frames that were circa 2008 as if I was limited to choosing only the frames 100% covered by my "crappy" vision plan.. The staff in the Ophthalmology dept that answer the telephone (receptionist/secretaries) are so rude and unprofessional. I called to request information about my eye exam and kept getting the same sarcastic response that the owner chooses not to share that information. I asked why? the response: the owner chooses not to?? I responded I understand that the owner chooses not to but why? Response: the owner chooses not to....... Not only did I not appreciate the response with out explanation; I really did not appreciate the attitude in which the response was given. It is apparent that they have received very little if any customer service training. What you say sometimes does not matter; but how you say it-----always matters!!! What a turn off. I'd have rated zero stars if I could. I saw Dr. Mark Gordon and he was incredibly rude to me. Berated me for not having brought my contact lens prescription with me, even though I had asked the Front desk before my appointment if there was anything I needed to bring and they said no. I went to pick up my daughter's glasses one afternoon and was told there was a balance, mind you, when I took her in to get the exam and pick out the frames NO ONE mentioned a balance. When I explained this to the very rude black woman who brought me the glasses she spoke to me in a very derogatory way and insinuated that I was lying. This was my first and last visit to this place. I started going here about 3 or Four years ago originally I picked it because it was close to my house and at the time I didn't have a car then eventually just stayed with them every time I go here the frontend staff is extremely rude and unfriendly minus one lady who sits at the front near the glasses case the doctor herself is what kept me there.She is sweet and no matter how long it's been she always remembers my daughter. We've been fighting with them ever since being charged a second copay of five times the price for a "contact exam" which was never explained to us until after it was done and we were strong armed into paying the second fee. I have been trying to get a pair of glasses that I in trusted with them to change the prescription. I received the glasses back with out the transitional lenses that I paid for. They were sent back for that work and I have been having a hard time getting information from them about these glasses. Dr Cohen is great, but I STRONGLY encourage you to get your eyeglasses elsewhere! Purchased eyeglasses on 10/18/17 and believed that I was told of a 5-7 business days wait. When I called around the 7th business day I was rudely informed that they would have never told me that because there's a 7-14 business day wait. So I asked, "so they should be ready by the 14th business day?" Again rudely, I was informed that my eyeglasses "might be ready that day", and that I'll be called when they came in. I called again on the 14th business day, and was yet again on the phone with the same rudeness and was told, "I told you that I would call you when your glasses were in and there not ready yet! I'll call you when they're in!" When I inquired of why not? I was only then informed that there was a mix up and something about UPS lost my glasses and that they were being remade after she had to reorder the frame I had selected and ship it to wherever it needed to go to be made . I was so outraged that I didn't ask why wasn't I informed before now or of how long will I now have to wait. That was November 10th. My husband called the next day and was informed the same but was told that it would only be a few more days after he requested if the order could now be expedited. It is now November 21st, 24 business days after we paid in full for my eyeglasses and NO eyeglasses, NO phone call, NO updates, and thanks to the very fine print on the bottom of the receipt, NO REFUNDS! read more

Just the most awful experience with the staff and the saga isn't over yet. You simply can't trust a word that they say. First my glasses weren't ready after 8wks because Covid caused VSP is close. This didn't seem correct so I called VSP. Sure enough they were open and had been leaving messages for them asking where my frames were. Then they told VSP that they didn't have the frames and they must have been sent to VSP. When I called for an update I was told they had found them and they were not ever sent but would be expedited. I asked if they could provide my PD so that I could explore other more expedient options. I was refused. This was 5/15. I wait patiently and call for an update today 5/28. No, they are not ready and they could give me no timeline. Best part is that if I hadn't called VSP and intervened then when they did find the frames they would have used insurance coverage that I lost 3/31. All this while being asked with rudeness if I understood what a pandemic was. It took everything I had to not inform the person that since I had a Masters in Science with graduate course work that included epidemiology that I did I fact know what one was and that it didn't mean that services couldn't be performed safely. read more

Avoid at all costs. The one off of Reisterstown Road is just as bad. They even acknowledge knowing that there support staff is rude; however, they say it is due to the generation (20's). The staff were much better my most recent visit and were so professional, I had not seen the place like that since 2011(?). Oh my, I was thrilled. The doctor is still fabulous and I am so glad to see all the changes, not only in the new location (which is rather "homey" :)) but in how everyone presented herself. I will update again, if needed. O5/2018 review - four stars gone - one star returns Went in for glasses and first told to just close my eyes while glasses are adjusted instead of taking off glasses. Said I'd rather take my contacts out to make sure all is well. She copped an attitude. I went ahead to take them out. Trying to smooth whatever the issue was, I said it was just better so that I wouldn't have to waste the offices' time if there was an issue when I got home and tried them w/o contacts. Her body language continues to read annoyance and I tried more to alleviate it... told her thanks for helping me pick the frame and explaining to me why the other frames didn't work. Okay, a response from her... she might be fine now. Wrong. The entire visit, which included me trying to spend even more money to get more contacts was met with an attitude and the doctor seemed to support it. With my glasses resting on my cheeks she walked off to charge my card. Upon her return I point that out to her and she remarks "they'll do that." This is not my first time wearing glasses, I've worn them for over a decade and always get certain ones so that they can be adjusted and not rest on my cheeks (we even discussed this when I ordered the frames with her). She walks back off and when she returns I point out to her that hers does not rest on her cheek and usually mine fit like that. Now, oh how she's even more upset. She says nothing, so I ask her if I can get 6 mts. more of contacts, as I know the glasses will annoy me like that - so I'll save them for emergencies. She tells me they always have the contacts in stock so I can order them anytime. I saw I'd order them today and how much. She tells me I don't have to do that now because they keep those in stock and they are $130. I said I actually wanted to get the ones I had before, because two of these have already torn and they don't hold the shape (wondering if the office is just trying to get rid of this new brand they had me try out because they have too many or need to get rid of them....hmmmm). She tells me I can only get the old ones unless the doctor says otherwise - with a conceited smile (I'm still trying to work with her and be calm because I've given up on the glasses now - will take as is and just pay out of pocket more for more contacts. I am confused as I know with the prescription I could even get the contacts I wanted elsewhere. I tell her okay (the doctor is visible from the other room) I saw I'll talk with him and explain that I would like to go back to the other brand. She then gets her most annoyed and more vex and says I didn't tell her I wanted to change the brand, how was she to know I did not mean prescription. Whoa. Okay. I say, oh I meant brand. She looks in chart and says it's $120 but tells me I don't have to order them today - I can call in. She gets up again. I put on glasses on her table to see how those fit, and sure enough, they do not rest on my cheeks. On her return, I ask if I could get my glasses to fit like these. She angrily retrieves my glasses and tells me the others are wider that's why they fit like that and she begins fiddeling with them again. Now, this is it. I'm over this. I've tried this whole visit. I ask to please work with someone else. She says why. I say because clearly I am annoying you so I no longer want to work with her. She snarks with a condescending smile that this is "her" job. I say then that I no longer want the glasses. She smiles all in triumph that the receipt says "no refunds." Same time the other doctor comes back out and can tell I am not pleased. She asks me what is wrong... no more characters through Yelp.... I'll end w/I've given this office numerous attempts. Sad to say goodbye after a decade, but, it's time. read more

My experience with the Pikesville location was okay until It was time to select the frames then it went downhill. While my pupils were dialating The Optomitrist took me to the front and asked the lady to help me with selecting a frame. She was with a client at the time whom she had been with since I walked in at 4pm the time was now 5:05pm. She glanced up and said she would be with me shortly. I waited a few minutes then decided I would browse and try on the glasses that caught me eye that were not locked in cases while she continued joking and playing around with the guy she had been with the past hour, they were even in the stock room where the new glasses are stocked before they go to the floor. Finally after aboaut 45 minutes she aknowledge me by telling me to let her know if I see anything I like. anyway she was no help I selected a pair the doctor suggested Progressive lenses and she proceded to tell me that my insurance would not cover it which is false. I informed her that my insurance does cover i just have to pay 60.00 she reluctantly went to the front to get my insurance information and proceded to make me wait another 30 minutes. She then asked me to try the chosen frames then asked me to to look at her while she placed a dot on the lenses. I hope and pray that I can see out of them I ended up still paying almost 500.00. my appointment was on 02/15 at 4pm i left there at almost 6pm. The only reason I stayed is because I had left work early and I had already had the exam and just didnt want to waste my time or go someplace else when I had seen the frames I liked. Believe me I didnt even go into details how horrible my experience was this is just the tip of it. just received a call today 03/05 that they are in. I had also called to speak with the manager and have yet to receive a phone call. read more

While the secretaries were reasonably polite, the doctor made it very clear how much I was inconveniencing him and was very rude for the entire appointment. I only wanted a written prescription from him to get contacts from another doctor, but he refused to give me one straight out because he had to "fit me for contacts" before he could determine the prescription. I have never seen that in my life (though he insisted that everyone does it), and they would have made me pay the fitting fee out of pocket ($60). When told I did not want to be fitted, he said I could not have my prescription. I asked that my insurance not be charged and he openly mocked me for having misunderstood about the fitting previously. I will not be going back there and if anyone asks about eye doctors, I will not recommend them. read more

Been going to the Pikesville location, for many years; however, I left this office, and recently returned; Ordered 2 pair of glasses, only to return to the office, for the proper fit 2 times, on one pair, and glasses still pinch behind ear; Picked up other pair, tried them on, and one lens was totally blurry; I was advised, the prescription, was entered, incorrectly, for that eye, so they would need, to send them out; Glasses came back with prescription okay; however, the lens itself, was not flush, in the frame, so back out they went.....It's been at least two weeks...No call or anything regarding status of my glasses....Called of 5/20/19, and was advised they would have to call me back, because it was Monday, and they were extremely busy, with two doctors in the office....Poor Customer Service...I don't really care what day of the week it is, I'm a Customer, and need my glasses, to get through the rest of the week....Needless, to say, I will not remain with Barenburg Eye Associates, as it appears, it is all about the money, and certainly not, patient care and Customer Service read more

I have a family of 7 so I bring a lot of valuable business. I was able to quickly get an appt. for my entire family. I went first with my middle son. We were met by a very rude secretary who barked at my son to go into a room with out any explanation. After waiting a few minutes I was told to go in a back room to remove my contacts. There are several back rooms. As I have been having eye exams for years I know what to do but I expect some customer service. When it was time for our exam both my son and I were brought back and rushed through our examinations. When I was asked if I had any concerns Dr. Vekker acted annoyed and told me that that wasn't anything wrong with me with no explanation. When I asked about my son's eye convergence and tracking she told me that she wouldn't check for that. Like other reveiwers I was never told if our eyes had changed if my prescription had changed I was just told with eyes dilated to go and pick out contacts and glasses. So weird. I said I am not buying anything from you and can I please have my scripts which was viewed as another inconveniance. In the end I had to go and pay out of pocket for another eye exam for my son because the Dr. was so terrible. What was not shocking to me was that the prescrition she prescribed for him was not even close to the one he truly needs. As you might imagine I cancelled my remainding family members appointments but for some reason I am now getting no show bills for them. I think the whole practice is a complete disappointment and I would go anywhere else for treatment even if it means paying out of pocket. read more

In January 2015, my wife ordered prescription glasses for our daughter from Barenburg Eye Assoc. They charged us $114, which they said is half of what we owe. They claimed that we do not have any coverage for Anti-Reflective (AR) Coating. I called my vision insurance company, and they called Barenburg and told them they we do in fact have full coverage. However, Barengurg claimed that we still have to pay for the AR coating since they don't do standard AR coating only Premium. I spoke to my insurance and they told me that Barenburg ordered standard AR coating . I asked them to call Barenburg and tell them that we should not be charged for A/R coating My wife was waiting with my children at Barenburg to pick up the glasses and even after they called Barenburg and told them that the glasses were filled with standard A/R coating, they refused to give my wife the glasses unless we payed an additional $40 for the A/R coating, claiming that they ordered the Premium. Premium is really only $80, not $90. which is Platinum. My wife had to leave empty handed, without the glasses. I spoke to the manager a few days later and after arguing for a while she finally agreed that we could pick up the glasses and receive a refund for what we paid for the AR coating. My wife has an exam for contact lenses from Barenburg and they said that she has to pay $100 for the fiting, even though this is covered under our plan and I confirmed this with my insurer. Barenburg refused to provide any contacts or the prescription, unless we pay the $100. My son had an eye exam at Barenburg and could not find glasses that he liked.so my wife asked for his PD#, so we could order him glasses from another store without him having to come in. They refused to provide it. I e-mailed the owner, Dr. Gordon and he sent me the following reply: "Any optical store does not need a pd to fill anyone's prescription. The only need for a pd is to order your glasses on line . Complete lenses and frame complete. We do not trust the quality or that our prescription will be filled accurately. Price is not the only thing in life. You get what you pay for. Good luck getting the quality eye exam you receive at barenburg somewhere else read more

I had the best experience at barenburg eye associates the other day. My eye doctor Dr. cohen took the best care making sure that I was aware of my prescription change and of how I need to use eye drops for my condition. I was told by the doctor when leaving that if I need anything to call the office and she would take care of it. I did get glasses and contacts here. The prices are reasonable and the delivery was in a timely matter. The staff is very sweet and attentive to my care as well as the doctor was. I highly recommend Barenburg eye associates for anyone who needs eye care services. read more

This place is terrible. This is my first official pair of glasses, so i bought two pairs at the same time, just in case, like i was doing with my reading glasses. Both pairs were highest end designer frames with extra-clear lenses and progressives (as expensive as it gets outside of bling). Total almost $1500 plus insurance contributions (I was not looking for a low price optical but for a reputable place to get upscale glasses). In the past 7 weeks they made 7 different errors with both pairs. I never got the second pair, being told that they are being made. Not one time did they take responsibility for the screw-ups, blamed the lab and gave multiple excuses, even thought it was evident that at some points they were clearly lying (like telling me that the lab had issues, while i saw my frames in their office not yet sent to lab, and they told me that the lenses were not order even though it was three weeks after prescription was made). When i decided to just keep one fairly ok pair and to get a refund for the second one that never arrived i was given a runaround about paperwork that needed to be done, that eventually a check would be sent even though i paid with credit card, promises to call but never calling, when i'd call them everyone of power was gone for the day, and the boss does not have a voicemail. Finally, when i threatened to just call the credit card and cancel the charges i was told that i could do whatever i wanted. So now i'm dealing with the refund through the credit card company. Eventually i got a message from their low level employee offering a refund which is much less than half of what i paid for two equally priced frames and identical lenses. Instead of taking the high road of admitting the problem and parting ways in honorable way, they are still nickel and diming me. Horrible experience! I would not recommend this place - you may get a decent pair of glasses, but if you encounter a problem be ready to fight. Better yet find a different reputable place where the quality control and basic processes make it good experience for patients and customers! read more
