I think one of the aspects that I've enjoyed most about moving outside of the city, is the fact…read morethat you have wonderful small business stores. My husband and I have really enjoyed getting to know the folks at Barnes hardware store. We just bought a house this past summer about 7 minutes from this store, and have had so many great experiences. Our first encounter here, we knew that we needed a lawn mower. Desperately. Our home sits on a half acre lot, and we were starting to look like those neighbors that you really wish had NOT moved in. We finally had enough cash reserves after dumping nearly all we had into down payments. We knew that if we got a push mower, it would take a full day of "family togetherness" for us to accomplish the task of mowing our lawn. We decided to check out Barnes, since it looked like a nice little place right off of Veterans Memorial. We received warm greetings right upon entering the store. We made our inquiries on riding mowers, and sure enough- they had a nice one that had recently been traded in and fixed up by their mechanics. Steve, who owns the store with his sweet wife, was not on location that day, and so his wife got him on the phone for us so that we could get the specs on the mower, and work out a reasonable price. In the end, we ended up getting a great little mower that has a cart that can be attached for half the price of a new one. Talk about being fortunate! (PS- I can't wait until this summer. I fully intend on rocking out to P!ink's "Rock Star" while mowing). As is the case with many smaller stores- They don't have everything. But you know what? I don't care. Sure- we cheat on them every once and a while by going to the big box hardware stores, but not until we've assured that they don't have exactly what we're looking for. Time and again this little hardware store has proven that they will take the time to help us. None of this "push the button and we'll have a store associate with you in a few minutes" stuff. One additional note- They're very competitive price wise with larger home improvement/hardware stores. I was very impressed with their seed prices (they buy in bulk locally) when we dropped in this past week.

Never having to swap/return anything from Barnes before this was my 1st time. I was asked to leave the boots also left proof of purchase and contact info and he would have Thorogood rep look at them. After 4-5 weeks I had to contact the store only to be told to pickup the boots they would not exchange them. I respectfully expressed my displeasure and now have these boots on a shelf in my garage to remind me and anyone else why I don 't do purchase nor recommend Barnes HW anymore.

I'm a fan of Shep's Midtown Ace and Ace Hardware stores in general. As opposed to big box home…read moreimprovement retailers like Home Depot and Lowe's, Ace stores are smaller and really exude a more genuine and authentic neighborhood feel. Generally, I've found the folks at Ace to be more accessible, knowledgeable, and helpful than those at the bigger stores. Shep's Midtown Ace is no exception. Shep's Midtown Ace opened in January 2015. I watched from across the street, from inside my dentist's office, as this place came together. It's certainly one of the nicest-looking Ace stores I've seen to date, especially in terms of its facade. Like other urban and in-town Ace stores, they efficiently pack a lot of useful inventory into the store. This one has two levels. The store is located at the corner of Juniper and 7th. Free parking is located inside the deck next door. Enter via Juniper. You don't need to enter any of the gated areas inside the deck. There are street-level spots reserved for Ace customers that will be on your right just after entering the deck. You don't need to grab a parking ticket or anything. I came here needing a tool to replace a recessed light bulb in a high/vaulted ceiling (about 14 feet high). Shortly after I entered the store, an employee greeted me and asked me if I needed help finding anything. I told him what I needed and he told me exactly where I could find it in the lighting section upstairs. The bulb changing kit has a telescoping pole that extends to 11 feet and three attachments: one for recessed and track lighting (a suction), one for standard incandescent bulbs, and one for floodlights. It cost $27.21 after tax which I thought was a little pricey, but not excessive (otherwise, I wouldn't have bought it). I was satisfied with my experience and will definitely return. I like this and the other Ace Hardware near me (Bates Ace Hardware on Howell Mill) about the same. They're both good.

I recently went in for advice on how to mount a tv into metal studs and Mark talked me through the different options I had and gave me his recommendations afterwards - it was all I could've asked for and more. I definitely recommend coming in for all of your handy needs. Plus they have free parking right around the corner!
