Our friends that visit us regularly from out of town are somewhat obsessed with historical sites, ghost tours..... and food. Especially chocolate. What could be better than to take a tour at this fabulous chocolate shop about an hour north of Saratoga Springs? We paid for the ghost tour and chocolate making experience ahead of time and it turned out that we were the only ones there, so it was a private event for us. Score!! The ghost stories and "tour" were fun and interesting. FYI- there's not really any walking around during the tour; there's seating in a small section of the house to hear about the different sightings and such. Making the chocolate ghost molds were a lot of fun and buying large quantities of Barkeaters absolutely delicious chocolates were perhaps the best part of the whole experience. If you're interested in trying something different, one of the flavors of chocolate "barks" is a chili lime dark chocolate. I think that one is my absolute favorite with a close second being the espresso dark chocolate. The chili lime starts with the deep chocolate flavor and lime....followed by a perfect buzz of chili. It's dangerously addictive. There are lots of different flavors of truffles (we snagged a box of 24 assorted!) and chocolate bars that are all absolutely wonderful. Super nice staff/owners.... I can see this would be a great place to visit in the fall and closer to Halloween. read more

We all received a small box of Chocolates from the Seagle Festival Gala dinner. They were delicious! Came right home and googled the name. We will be driving to Barkeater Chocolates asap to get more of these amazingly delicious chocolates. My fav so far is the raspberry chocolates truffle, but I'm sure I'll have more favorites before I'm out of the store. You have to try these if you're anywhere near North Creek! read more

Loved this place! Didn't have to stay long to feel welcome and get a little history. You walk in to the smell of chocolate, of course it's the best part, but all around is fun little treats. Whether it's the back room with chocolate themed candles, actual cocoa beans (with stages) or the fun map to place where you're from! The staff was so polite and nice. Late review from our experience at this lovely shop 8/23 Making chocolate here is sooo much fun. You begin watching a video about the history of chocolate. You get to taste some nibs. Then you are brought to a table set up just for your group. You then get to pick 3 toppings for your 3 creations. My toppings : sea salt , bee pollen, pecans Husband's: dried cranberries , maple sugar , bee pollen Kid's: marshmallows, raw sugar , dried cranberries (he wishes he just used marshmallows x3 btw) (Group min is 4, we got permission to just be 3 of us if we paid for the 4th ticket - kid has sensory issues so a bigger class wouldn't have worked - thanks for accommodating!). Creation 1: a mold of 4 bars. You can sprinkle one bar each of the toppings you choose then add a sprinkle of all of them to your 4th bar. Or sprinkle a little of all on all 4. It's so satisfying to pour chocolate into this mold. Creation 2: you get another bowl of melted chocolate to fill a square. a bark square. Use whatever amount of toppings you want ! Leave a little more toppings for your last creation: Creation 3: a turtle. You get a circular piece of chocolate, almonds , and caramel (that you spread). Then you pour more chocolate goodness overtop. You can then use the rest of your toppings. In retrospect I could have used more of my toppings on my bar. I had a lot of toppings left. But they encourage you to " lick the bowl" so I just poured all my toppings in my bowl and ate the rest of my chocolate that way. My son has already devoured all his chocolates. I'm savoring. I stil have my bark and my turtle. Bryce was wonderful. Everyone is wonderful. We will be back ! read more

We just did the Ghost Tour & Making Chocolate - fascinating history of the building, local lore and resident ghosts. Fun making chocolate and trying to resist licking the spatula - chocolate was sinfully good. Best chocolates out there! Big fan of the hot chocolate flavors. Always mixing new flavor combinations and they never disappoint.

The store is a cute little shop. We were disappointed that they did not have any samples. We took a gamble because reviews were very good yet this was one of those times I wish I tried just 1 to taste before we ended up purchasing 12. Only 1 was good the rest we threw out. These are NOT truffles at all they are extremely hard and seemed to be very old tasting. The Chocolate Bark is the only thing good in this store I guess the name. Another downfall is NO bathrooms they want you to use the gas station one that is quite a distance away. We won't be back sad to say. read more

My wife and I decided to do the haunted tour during our weekend away. We both had a great time hearing the information Deb (the owner) had uncovered about the factory and its inhabitants. We finished our time by making some custom chocolate ghosts and a trip through the chocolate store. We did the ghost tour and even though it was not at what we thought it was going to be, it was amazing! Deb the owner made sure as her guest we felt safe with covid and was doing individual group tours. So when my husband and I booked the tour, we were the only ones. The story behind the start up of Barkeater and the history of the building. After getting the history , we proceeded inside to get a tour of the creative room and store. We were able to make ghost chocolates!! While they were chilling we shopped and was able to bag our chocolates before leaving. The personal touches were what made it special! The stickers had our names on them. Greeted us by name. Extremely personable and made us feel we were a guest in her home over to bake and share stories. I had seen this chocolate shop on NYS haunted history's website (Forwarded from I heart NY). We love the Adirondacks and have seen their stuff in Keene before. We decided to give it a try after all the great reviews and we have never been to this specific area of the ADK. We paid $60 plus tax for a haunted factory chocolate experience for two. Unfortunately I guess We expected more for the fact that it was on I heart NYs website. The young girl telling the story of the haunts/experiences they have had at the shop definitely was not used to story telling and you could tell. She did tell us that she gets nervous being the center of attention. The story also seemed lacking. No real history is known, more here say. As for the making of the chocolate. That was fun. Everyone was very nice, but My husband and I don't think a shotty told story and 5 minutes of putting some chocolate in molds is worth $30 PP. but if you are looking for something entertaining to do while in the area, why not give it a try. read more

Besides the fact that the peanut butter cups are the best, the paranormal experience did not disappoint. I dont want to repeat what wonderful things others have written about this place which are all accurate. What i want to say is i have been to multiple other paranormal tours at a prison and forts etc, with no response from spirits, however here for my first time I witnessed a spirit turn on a machine, knock a box off a shell, answer direct questions by turning a flashlight on and off and another couple captured the spirit speaking on an EVP. We went here because we read about the offering of a chocolate making experience. You can sign up on their website or call and make an appointment. If you are looking for something fun to do in the area for an hour or two, I highly recommend it! You get an overview of the chocolate making process and then get instruction on making some chocolate of your own that you get to take home. You choose up to three mix ins per person that you can share with your group and include in what you make (for example, marshmallows, pumpkin spice, various nuts or dried fruit). You then make milk chocolate bark, three milk chocolate clusters and a milk chocolate caramel turtle. We thought it was fun and easy. Debbie, one of the owners, and our instructor was super nice and helpful. While the chocolate you make is setting, you can peruse the offerings in their shop. Ellen, the clerk in the shop, was also really nice and helpful in describing the chocolate selections and being patient with us as we made our selections. She happily greeted everyone as they came into the shop and gave them an overview and quick tour of the offerings as they came in. There are a lot of tasty chocolates to choose from (chocolate bars, bark, peanut butter cups, caramels, truffles with lots of varying flavors being the main stuff) and you get 10% off if you've signed up for the chocolate making experience. We haven't tried all of what we bought yet, but I've enjoyed what I've tried so far, especially the dark chocolate raspberry caramels. Their website has a listing of most of what you can find in the store if you want to see some of their offerings before you go, or you can order online. If you love chocolates and supporting a local business, at least go check out the store. I LOVE chocolate but unfortunately, the candy is made with a lower level because it's not smooth when melting in your mouth. In fact, it's a "harsh" kind of chocolate... A bit difficult to describe, but if they invested more in a higher end to create their confections, we would be purchasing constantly from them to send to our clients as we love to support local businesses. Perhaps if they got the nudge from others, they would do this. Many times, small stores aren't given the feedback needed and people just stop going.
