It has a decent selection for a smaller town. There's a deli, produce section, dairy aisle, meat department. Everything you would expect from a grocery store with a smaller selection -- although they really do try here. I wish there was more produce to choose from but I'm spoiled coming from the Midwest.

With no fabric store within 50 miles, they took out most of the fabric, leaving a few remnants and the rest prepackaged yards. They no longer carry fleece, and they don't even carry felt squares. Many other items I used to buy have been removed from the store as well, so finding what I am looking for has become much more difficult across the board. PS - the staff has been doing their best, I'm sure they have been receiving a lot of complaints like mine. I surely hope things improve when this is all over!

I'm reviewing Charlie John's as a Bookstore-Café. Because there's one little table in the back by the deli, and we had (seriously) a delightful time there after a few dozen banal visits for groceries and supplies. First off, the made to order sandwiches -- we got egg salad and tuna salad -- are quite good. The Broccoli salad was as good a one as I've ever had, although I suspect that was because there were little bits of ham in it we didn't notice until after we started eating it (we are not dogmatic vegetarians, and occasionally fall off the wagon anyway). The deli staff were extremely pleasant, and I don't mean this as a knock on any particular establishment, but during the busy summer season that really stands out among other more harried employees of some businesses I shan't mention. And then we had the added pleasure of being able to talk directly to a half dozen patrons, as we were blocking the access to pork roll, ground turkey, and littleneck clams from our perch at the sole table. Second: the bookstore. CJ's has a half a row of books in the camping section, plus another stub for maps and guidebooks, and honestly, I think I've been in every bookstore in the ADK, I think this has the best-curated books of local interest. They have some truly small-press low-print-run titles here, from a biography of Nick Stoner to a history of the Moose Plains Wilderness. It's fun just to browse and while you can't buy everything, we always make it a point to buy something. That's when it occurred to me: we were having as enjoyable a time as we have at bookstore cafés. I mean, this sure beats Barnes and Noble. So having not bothered to review Charlie John's before -- what else is there to say about the best small grocery store in the ADK that hasn't been said in other reviews -- and convey to you that you now have a secret rainy day destination. That is the Charlie John's Bookstore Café.

It's a restaurant supply/food service company that so happens to have an "open to the public" retail operation as well. You'll find meats, seafood (including live lobster), produce, GIANT containers of mustard, ketchup, hot sauce, olive oil, you name it. They've also got plants/flowers for sale outside in the front. Inside also contains bread, milk, cheese, really all of the "essentials." In a pinch they do sell single rolls of toilet paper like you'll find in a hotel, and paper towels. They have some kitchen utensils if you're in need. Hell, I picked up a bottle of windshield washer fluid here too. Added bonus: they carry nuns of new skete cheesecake! If you aren't familiar with this, google it. It's made by local nuns and is delicious, puts Sysco to shame. $36 for a 4 lb cake. If they don't carry something here that you need, you can find it the dollar general or CVS that's right down the street. Despite not being anywhere near a full service grocery store, Green Mountain Food Service's store is a godsend for the depressed town of Whitehall. Remember to bring cash, or if you're someone who pays by check (how many people do that anymore?) you're covered. Same with EBT, that is accepted. GMFS does NOT accept credit or debit cards. There is an ATM and a restroom on site. Hours are 8 am to 5 pm Monday-Saturday. The store is closed on Sunday.

What was once a quaint, authentic local business has sadly degenerated. At my recent visit, the proprietor and staff couldn't be bothered to wear masks in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic, despite all the customers having the courtesy to do so. Unfortunately, as I always try make a point of supporting local small business, I have to recommend others stay away. There are several other lovely small town general stores nearby - like The Hague Market - where the owner has clearly instructed staff to protect themselves and the customers. Please be sure to visit those instead! read more

This place is a gem in the Adirondacks. Off the beaten path - but don't let that deter you. My husband and I NEVER miss going here while on vacation. The food is GREAT and very reasonably priced. You feel like you have stepped back in time. The hosts Maureen and Robert are wonderful people who make you feel like you have known them for years. After eating, you can shop in the store for wonderful Adirondack gifts. read more

This place is great! There are new owners who are bringing a new vibe. Really friendly, young and lively. The coffee has greatly improved and the owners and there kids are really out to please. My waitress was incredibly kind and comped me the pie for the cold food and, when my new "hot" plate of food came out, it was warm, not hot, however the eggs were properly poached. For the life of me, I have no idea why this place is always packed other than the WOL people have few options for dining in Schroon. It's such a shame because Pitkin's has been around for a long time. My suggestion, if you want a good home cooked breakfast, skip Pitkin's and take the scenic drive to Mama's Cafe in Fort Edward. I promise you, it's worth the drive alone.
