I work customer service in a highly technical field. I repair high end luxury vehicles. It's always in my mind that I'm handling the first or second most expensive item most folks own. Second only to their homes. I'm well aware of the exacting standards needed. The self discipline needed and the attention to detail and care for details needed to restore someone's prized luxury vehicle. Those same standards apply to working in or on someone's home. My previous reviews explain how I met Jake at Barker Tech. This is a new review with new perspective. It's been over two years since I paid Jake and shook his hand. In those two years Jake has reached out 3 times to check on my home and his work. It just seems to be how he is. In those two years I've reached out with some admittedly stupid questions and each time he's addressed my concerns without any snark or down talk that some techie guys use when speaking to plebes. I needed additional home tech stuff and naturally I reached out to Jake. His response was timely given his work load and he immediately offered elegant solutions to an inelegant problem. (Someone in my neighborhood is actively using my gravel yard as a dog pit stop and leaving me nasty surprises ). Jake offered some very clever options up to and including an outdoor speaker paired with my existing camera system (that he installed ) to politely ask the offending dog owner to remove their dog waste. Ultimately my wife vetoed the idea of me having the ability to leave audio messages for bad neighbors. But Jake's suggestion of an upgraded new camera with AI facial recognition and a wider field of view was perfect. Within a week Jake personally came back and upgraded the camera thus negating the one small blind spot the offender had been using. He kept his word. He sent me tutorials and worked with me not even being home to ensure that I was 100% satisfied with my upgraded surveillance view before leaving. Setting standards and holding yourself to them are key to excellence. Keeping your word and delivering what you promise are key to excellence. But. Excellence isn't derived from robot like adherence to guidelines. It's a combination of many intangible things. It's rare these days to encounter true excellence in almost any field. I'm torn writing this because I honestly want to keep Barker Tech a secret so they're always available when I have an issue! But the work Jake has done is too good not to share. I previously used a big Bay Area AV/home automation company. I spent over six figures on the initial install when I was rebuilding my house, and after that, every "fix" cost thousands. They had me on a Savant system where even a simple upgrade--like adding a new Apple TV 4K--was quoted at $4,000 because I needed new video cards. I was tired of the "gatekeeping" and not being able to make simple changes myself. I hired Jake to fix the mess, and Barker Tech has been incredible. He didn't just patch things up. he completely updated my network and AV, removed the bloated Savant system, and simplified my entire home automation setup. The result? Jake did an excellent job adding to my home network back in 2022 - he ran direct ethernet cable to my son's upstairs bedroom, and added two access points to give me wifi throughout our large home. I highly recommend Barker Tech. In addition, Jake goes above and beyond. 4 years later, I wanted to add devices to the Ethernet cable attached to my access point. I am in no way a tech person (but have somehow been nominated the tech person for our household...), so I googled and used YouTube for ideas and had a plan, but realized, given my complete lack of tech education, I should run it by a real tech person. We recently completed a major remodel of our home and hired Barker Tech to upgrade our audio and IT systems. Jake and his team ran ethernet cables throughout our 2 story home and greatly improved our internet connectivity. I work from home and spend most of my day on Zoom calls. Having hardwired internet is such a relief after dealing with spotty WiFi for the past couple of years. We added Sonos home theater systems on both levels, with in-ceiling Kef speakers, Sonos ARC sound bars, and Sonos subwoofers. Everything is connected through an app we control through our iPhones. The sound quality is incredible and Jake provided a thorough tutorial on how to operate everything. Our lower level includes an 83" LG television mounted on an adjustable arm. Jake's team worked with our contractor to build the television into a wall niche with precision measurements and careful installation in front of our accent paneling. We used Jake and his team to setup the networking for our remodel. We added a Ubiquity Unifi system, wiring throughout the house, in ceiling speakers, outdoor speakers and cameras, and some home automation. They were incredible to work with - put together a great system, set it up, quality work all the way around, worked well with our primary contractor, explained everything clearly. I went out and got several quotes and Jake's was the right sized for our project - we spent some money to do it right, but Jake's was more reasonable than others we received and Jake had a personal touch that I really appreciated. We reached out to Jake and team to setup network (running fiber), home automation, and security for our home, as well as to clean up a bunch of issues we had with our automatic blinds and wiring. Jake was super responsive in getting a quote to us for all the work, and he and his team are extremely detail oriented. Because we had some unusual blind hardware, they came back for a few visits until they made sure all the automations were working correctly and they personally weren't satisfied until the responsiveness of all the automations was super fast. Even a few weeks after they were done, we were experiencing some WiFi slowness in one part of the house and Jake quickly tuned the network. We just did a full house remodel project with Jake, which included running ethernet cables, setting up a Ubiquity networking stack with multiple APs, and Unifi cameras. We also mounted TVs, in-ceiling speakers and set up a Sonos system. Overall, our experience with Jake was top notch. He is incredibly detail oriented and cares about getting everything just right. Starting from designing the system, to getting things installed during construction, and then setting up and configuring everything, I'd say every single step was extremely well thought out, communicated and executed. Jake's crew is also super competent - they care about getting details right and really making sure things are done properly - no half measures here. Jake and team might not be the cheapest option around, but I'd say they are worth it. We've dealt with a lot of crews and subcontractors during the remodel, and Jake and team really stand out in terms of how competent and professional they are. I reached out to Jake to address issues with my Sonos system, which it turned out was tied to a larger issue with that company and its upgrades. Jake was able to clearly explain the dilemma, short term/long term options, and partner with me on a path forward without the typical sales push. He promptly retuned emails regarding equipment and scheduling, performed the work as quoted, and had a very easy online invoice and billing process. I ended up adding an exterior camera to the scope which he incorporated during same visit and helped out troubleshooting my DoorBird system (which I didn't realize he has expertise in and had scheduled another company to address. The scope of work was relocating an Ethernet port to an adjacent wall (required rerunning it through the crawl space) and testing/repairing all of the existing jacks that had gone bad. For years, I used mesh networking equipment like Google Wifi. I even tried higher consumer equipment like the ASUS ZenWifi. None of this was suitable for my home. Daily sporadic disconnects. Poor speeds. I wasn't able to leverage even a fraction of my gigabit ISP connection over my network. Even over wired connections -- things weren't working well enough. I finally decided to rip off the band-aid and call Barker Tech to run ethernet cable throughout my narrow San Francisco home -- across several stories, including our attic, and into several rooms. Jake and Earl made minimal wall openings in order to run ethernet cable, install ethernet wall points, access points in the ceiling, and install a semi-professional Ubiquiti network system in my home. Also included was a rack in our garage to house the router and switch. I honestly didn't know what I was missing. My home network is now rock solid. I consistently get between 700-900 Gbps (over a Wi-Fi connection!) in multiple places throughout my home. I had a great experience working with Barker Tech for network and security camera installation. The team installed a bunch of gear in a custom wood cabinet and made the necessary modifications to mount everything. They tested and terminated a bunch of CAT6 cables throughout the house as well as mounted multiple access points. The team also mounted several exterior security cameras cleanly and efficiently, including setting up and modifying custom junction boxes when necessary. After setup, everything was wrapped up, routed, or covered in a very tidy way. Jake is clearly knowledgeable and experienced. He came with thoughtful suggestions for how to achieve my goals but he was flexible and helpful when I wanted certain things done a different way. Shout out to his crew of Wilson and Fernando who did great work and were very collaborative. I was so impressed with Jake and his crew at Barker Tech that I used my work phone to write this follow up review. Here is why. After Jake blew me away with his initial install. He came back to follow up and to help my wife and I adjust settings and tweak the notifications and stuff for the cameras. Imagine this. The OWNER OF THE COMPANY came back personally to help my goofy self set up the system. He even went so far as to repeatedly walk around in my backyard as a test person for the system to learn the alerts I wanted. Pretty cool service. Secondly. I was lamenting my woes surrounding a series of low voltage LED lights I was having issues with. Jake smiled and said. "I'm not really a lighting expert but I'll give it a shot ." Next thing I knew. I had functioning lights and Jake texted me a tutorial on how to set the timer AND he even actually taught me in person how to use it !! I'm not a tech savvy guy. It's why I hired Barker Tech. Jake and his team were great. I asked him to come by and advise on how to setup our 2 story house for wired ethernet to support solid wifi in every room, wifi outside in the yard, and security cameras with local storage. I had setup my previous house by myself using a Unifi system (recommendation I found by wirecutter), so I knew exactly how much work this could be (and how many weekends it would occupy me). This time around I wanted to get help from someone who knew what they were doing and could do it much faster :). Jake was the right choice! He came by, quickly advised on a system (also recommended unifi), was very cool about re-using some of my old equipment, and honest about what would work well (and not) about some of my choices. He never pressured me and his quote was reasonable. Last: Jake was really on top of equipment availability which -- given current supply chain situation -- is not trivial for a lot of electronics. On the day of the job, he and his coworker showed up and dove right in. They were unintimidated by crawlspaces or attics, and found a way to get wiring to every place I wanted it with a super clean finish (and I'm really picky about the way that contractors finish jobs). We ended up with one minor drywall patch in order to make one of the runs down from the attic but -- given that we ran almost 1000ft of cat6 into 8 different rooms -- I was very impressed.
