Decided to come to this cafe to get a quick sandwich rather than take out at a restaurant. The service was horrible. It was a weekend but there were only 3? People ahead of us. Apparently there's only one guy who makes sandwiches and he was slammed. We waited 40 minutes for a pesto, tomato, mozzarella sandwich. It was really sad. The two workers outside were talking story and I asked how much longer. The boy checked and said you should be next, I wasn't next and had to wait 10 more minutes. Then when mine was ready the sandwich maker mumbled and didn't yell out he order so I wasn't sure if the sandwich was mine. The two workers continued to talk so I asked them if it was mine. They didn't know and I just opened it to find out it was. This place was not even busy and a simple sandwich took 40 minutes. The two other workers should've helped or forewarn me of the wait in advance.. I wouldn't recommend to come here unless you don't mind waiting for a while. read more

Excellent sandwiches and sides here! Especially the smoked baked beans, grab a full pint and you won't be disappointed. We had the Dingo (pulled pork) and Retriever sandwiches. They each came with a delicious layer of home made coleslaw and a fresh baked bun. Cool atmosphere if a bit spartan (no condiments or napkins on the tables) but that seemed to go with the main function here: high end coffee service. Nice place, good food! read more

I'm going to preface this by saying I am the LEAST coffee shop person there is. If I'm buying coffee it's much more of a purchase and leave transaction but I can appreciate the charm of Barking Dog. I love that the signs in the parking lot are dog themed, that gave me a nice impression before even walking in the door, it was early on a weekend so the place was expectedly packed. We browsed the snacks and drinks and placed our orders, two iced americanos and a breakfast burrito. The drinks did take a little while but it appeared to be one, maybe two people taking on this rush so I'm not going to knock them. There's plenty of seating to feel comfortable if you are the type to browse the Internet with your coffee, and it did appear they were under a remodel as well. The presentation is very laid back, with typed up menus and hand written notes on nearly everything, this isn't a joint that takes itself seriously, and that's totally okay. read more

Yes- go here! I am a pretty picky coffee consumer and I won't drink a beverage that I purchased if it isn't good. We were staying close by and what a great find! I had a really delicious soy cappuccino and my husband had a great iced coffee. Came here a second time and again- spot on. Employees were professional but fun. Good service, and friendly. There aren't a lot of places to sit and get some coffee in Sonoma, especially if you're hangin out on the other side of town, Barking Dog will answer that call. I have been wanting to come in here for months, and finally I went ahead and checked it off my list. I could smell the beans roasting from the street, and there they were right as you walk in, getting toasty in a big tray. The place is bright and clean, perfect for hanging out and having your morning cup or afternoon pick me up. I always get black coffee, so I can't rate you their specialty drinks, but the coffee met my needs. Like all coffee houses, they have a few baked goods to offer - but none especially caught my eye. The staff all seemed to be high schoolers, so be warned... Go for the coffee and the clean, cheerful colors. read more

Great little spot along Highway 12 on the way to Agua Caliente. I had a Cafe Late and a fresh baked cinnamon bun and a mixed berry turnover. Yummy all the way! I've heard about Barking Dog for years, and finally stopped in for a sandwich to go: the new-looking outside barbecue display and picnic area invited me in. I like the outside tables, by the way: it will go a long way towards making Highway 12 more of a main street for Boyes Springs and not just a way to get from winery A to cheese shop B in Sonoma Valley. Anyway, the place's ambiance is as funky as you get in the upscaled Valley these days. What looks like local art for sale on the walls, pseudo-3rd world decorations and crafts, and some young clientele who look like they're reliving their grandparents' hippie days. It's a nice change from wine country chic and reminded me a bit of my own childhood in Sonoma. I was greeted by a pleasant young woman who was enthusiastic about the emerging barbecue menu and my choice of a tri-tip sandwich. I came to love Santa Maria barbecue when living in Santa Barbara, so I was expecting a slab of marinated, unadorned grilled meat on a roll. What Barking Dog does instead is more like a "pulled" version of tri-tip in a spicy sauce. Delicious, but different from what I'm used to. (Also, I suggest the change their roll to sourdough, perhaps as baked by Basque Boulangerie or Artisan, just down the road.) There were several other customers picking up cups of coffee or freshly roasted beans. They had that look that regulars for whom a stop at their favorite place is just what you do. I really like this place. It has a relaxed atmosphere and good food and drinks. It has ample seating and WIFI. I only wish they had a clear menu listing their offerings. I can't read the menu on the wall so I just guess "do you have Thai iced tea"? They do! And then the bakery shelf only has a couple of things. I feel confused "do you have food other than this"? Really want to support the local businesses, but now that I'm sitting in the Barking Dog in the Whole Foods shopping center, I realize why I go back to Starbucks regularly. First, the price: a small latte blended is $3.75. The White Mocha is $5.50 for a 16 oz!! I can't believe these funky people that frequent this place pay over $5.00 for a coffee drink. It's not particularly clean, very tired looking pastries (what's left of them) and crappy furniture. Staff is more interested in chatting with other tattooed "patrons" than waiting on you. The owner (I guess) comes in and has a loud conversation with the employee that I don't want to hear. At least at Starbucks there is consistency, cleanliness and surprisingly good prices. I came here with my girlfriend as a stop on a road trip along the west coast, and this is one of the spots that made us wish we had stayed in Sonoma longer. I ordered a double shot of espresso and a morning glory muffin. The espresso was good, not the best(light crema; probably not ground or packed tight enough), but I'm a tough critic of espresso. The muffin is what had me sold. For the rest of our trip I sought out a muffin of comparable quality to no avail. I vow to one day return for the glorious morning muffin. My girlfriend got the Jasmine tea. She loved it. Personally I do not like Jasmine tea, but this one had a very different taste and I caught myself siphoning her tea cup while on the road. I think if I was going to move to Sonoma, the fact of this cafe could sway my position into the "yes" category for Sonoma if I was on the fence as to where to live! What a charming little place -- albeit, in a strip mall, although in the one that includes Whole Earth. The most conspicuous thing is a restaurant on the corner called (I believe) Black Bear cafe -- in fact, you have to drive into the shopping center to spot Barking Dog. Other attractions in the center include a pet food store, and a 31 Flavors with the "old school" sign we remember from the '80s! Barking Dog is such a welcoming, relaxed place -- and it has a front and bag -- with comfy chairs, plenty of tables -- a bathroom (for customers). There is a shelf of games and also paperbacks in back, and the lattes are delicious! And yes, I believe WiFi is free for customers. This is my new must-stop-by for Sonoma! read more

This is the best cafe I've found in my hometown for telecommuting. My husband and I own a design/communications business and take our work with us; we come to Barking Dog every day when we're visiting my parents in Sonoma. The coffee, roasted on site, is very good, and the baristas don't seem to mind people with laptops posting up all day. The smoothies are a bit pricey but fresh and delicious. Occasionally a teenage barista with an annoying voice will be working, or a certain music mix plays on loop interminably, but those are small prices to pay for a spacious coffee shop with pleasant ambience and free, reliable Wi-Fi. It's common to see tutors working with their students, or professionals having business meetings. During the mornings and weekends, it's more of a social spot for groups of friends to catch up. FYI, if the Barking Dog staff happens to be roasting coffee while you're there, you'll come away with your hair and clothes smelling like you bathed in the stuff. read more
