Excellent espresso. We stopped in here while on vacation, and I picked up a half pound of espresso to take home. The beans are awesome, pulling some of the nicest. most consistent shots I've seen. The taste is very smooth, though I admit that I don't drink it straight, it's almost always in a latte. read more

Recently started going here again after years. Sometimes the coffee/espresso is great. Sometimes they TOTALLY drop the ball. For example, my boyfriend's latte today was basically a flavored cup of steamed milk. Since he'd already left he didn't bother to go back and get another. It was a new barista(at least one we'd never seen before), but it would just be awesome if there was some consistency in their coffee drinks. Not sure if its an issue of proper training, or what.. My boyfriends drink today was bad enough he doesn't want to ever go back to even try it out again. I'd go everyday if Lexie could make my drink every time. read more

Cafe mocha was tasty but cold. I am not a fan of what should be hot coffee being served cold. Ordered a pulled pork sandwich which I can only describe as rancid tasting. It went directly into the garbage. Side of beans were cold too, obviously not microwaved long enoughThen the worst part was I used the restroom where the toilet brush was next to the toilet as expected but the brush was filled with feces.....Seriously, I kid you not. Picking up my Latte this morning, I noticed some postings that the owner had placed on the bulletin board about some negative reviews and I felt compelled to respond. I have been going to the Barking Dog since it opened many years ago. I have seen it go through many incarnations and enjoyed the wonderful blends of coffee with it's freshly roasted beans. I have always been greeted by a lovely staff and enjoy seeing my neighbors and acquaintances. That's why I found the reviews by LaRae and Blaze puzzling. The Dog is a special place. It's were community comes together to enjoy GREAT coffee, lovely pastries (Try the Cinnamon rolls, they are excellent) and camaraderie. I have my own espresso machine and try a variety of coffee blends. I will have to say that the dog does a fine roast with exceptional beans! I would also suggest speaking with the owner if you have a problem, he is always trying to make the dog shine and is open and affable. read more

Local coffee shop with outdoor seating and friendly staff. We were staying across the street at the Fairmont Hotel, or should I say 'palace', and needed a dose of good coffee each morning. We looked no farther than across the street and "voila", Barking Dog Roasters! Coffee was fresh and perfectly brewed. Although they are undergoing some inside renovation, there was still plenty of seating for customers. And just to show you how much they love their customers, they are doing the renovation at night - yes, at night, instead of sleeping - so as not to bother us coffee addicts during the day. Service is cordial but slow; staff seem disorganized with the barista changing tasks to have the cashier do barista and food at the same time- items that they commonly use for preparation are in different locations and not easily accessed, forcing staff to run around aimlessly. No napkins for food items, used sugar packets in the plant pots, overall seems poorly managed despite being very busy and attracting a crowd. Coffee is a plus as is the scone! read more

I always like to give my business to the little guy. And while the coffee itself was delicious at Barking Dog, I wonder if the staff had access to enough oxygen today because "Hello?? Is anybody in there??". The staff looked at me like I was speaking in tongues and had two heads when I told them that the toilet was backed up. I had to ask the staff to heat up my frittata three times, and it still wasn't warm (invest in a new oven/microwave?). The tables were covered in old newspapers and dusted with crumbs upon crumbs from customers before me. No napkins available. No half-and-half at the "coffee doctoring" station. Seriously? Was the Manager off today? What a joke. But mostly, just hire people who have some indication of grey matter between their ears. That's all. My boyfriend and I came to Barking Dog Roasters the middle of last week and instantly enjoyed the atmosphere, which seems to draw a lot of locals and a faithful crowd. We tried a coffee cake which we wolfed down and enjoyed whole heatedly, I would love to try more of their pastries if they are as fresh and tasty as the coffee cake was. The reason Barking Dog Roasters is getting 3 out of 5 is for the customer service. We both felt that the two behind the counter were boring and aloof. Attempts to make friendly conversation were quickly shot down; overall it was not pleasant. Overall it was nice to try someplace new but it is not a location we would make the visit from Petaluma again. read more

BarkingDog is a great little local sport. Good wifi and a great spot to sit and get some work done, meet a friend or client and they have good service. Here is the best kept secret in Sonoma though: The sandwiches!!!! OMG... they are SO GOOD!! Spend the extra buck and get the pickle. It's this huge killer deli pickle. I loce the Mad Dog tri-tip. Yeah the coffee is decent but the sandwiches are over the top yummy!! Don't skip lunch when you go there. read more

I am very pleased that I went into Barking Dog last weekend! Fantastic customer service! My mom, two year old, and I went in and ordered 2 lattes, a smoothie, and chocolate chip cookie. We sat down at a table to enjoy our treats. That is when it all went to hell (thanks to me)! My toddler bobbled his smoothie, and as I went to help him, i knocked my latte all over the floor, table, and chair cushions! One of the girls working quickly came to our aid and cleaned everything up. AND the other girl working made me a brand new latte! If that wasn't enough, I then was wiping the chocolate crumbs of off my kiddo's face... when yes... I knocked over the second latte... Once again, the fantastic girls at Barking Dog came to my rescue, with clean up and ANOTHER FRESH latte! They were awesome! At that point in time, we decided to take our party outside (to a perfect closed in picnic bench area) where we were able to finish our treats in their entirety! Great local place, with good coffee, and more importantly, wonderful customer service! Definitely stop here!! read more

Simple and fresh tasty sandwiches, assortments of coffee, tea and smoothies, and delicious looking pastries (I didn't try one myself, despite the temptation). Nice and quiet atmosphere and really feels like part of a community. The place doesn't seem to take itself too seriously, and I appreciate that vibe. I will say that I think the menu should be printed vs handwritten because it was a bit difficult to read on the wall (and there's a slight glare). But all in all, definitely worth checking out and I'll be back! read more

I thought I had reviewed this already and came on here to update it only to find no review yet, so here it is. We originally had a good experience here, in summer 2013, but the last few times have been consistently mixed or disappointing. The basic place is cute and fun with some nice windows and some nice seating, if in a limited area. The dog-paw coffee ice cubes are fun, and the coffee has been consistently good. However, if you want something other than coffee, you miss out. The tea choices are limited and the tea weak and bland. They only have some basic herbal or green, thin black iced tea, or the usual pseudo-masala "chai." The fun ice cubes are only for coffee. Moreover, the place always seems to be poorly run by people who don't know what their doing or don't care. While they are nice enough, they are very slow, they make assumptions about what you want, the sugar/milk mixing area is often poorly stocked with almost no milk or cream left unless you go ask to have it refilled. Simple syrup is typically not at the counter and when we've asked for it, they had to go look for it as if it never occurred to them people might want it and even then the bottle last time had almost nothing in it. This all despite the fact that the last few times there has been almost no-one in there so they are not even that busy. The place is good enough, especially for coffee, that it may be worth going to but they really need to run it better and, for those who want tea instead of coffee, they should put in a bit more effort at providing something good. read more

Used to be my favorite coffee in the world, but it seems to have gone downhill in the last month. I'm not sure if they have a new roast person or what, but the coffee is extremely inconsistent now. Unfortunately Peet's is my new "go to" for a decent cup of coffee. Last time I was in there they ran out of espresso!! What kind of coffee shop runs out of espresso?? It also seems that there is always a line, as if there hey are short staffed. Maybe the management changed? It really sucks to see a place you once loved go downhill in such a short amount of time. Barking dog roasters is pretty darn cool! If you want some great coffee, strong coffee and yummy yummy pastries this spot has it all. Friendly service, too. And they host cool evening events and have really neat art displays. Overall the atmosphere here is welcoming, warm, and just a nice place. Their smokehouse food is delicious. I don't think you will be disappointed! Check it out! And be patient if there is a line. The barristas are working as hard as they can to give everyone great service and great beverages. Since the hot drinks are made fresh to order, it is going to take a moment or two. read more

Rude. Obnoxious. Staff. If you want to be gravely disappointed with your food and treated rudely by the employees -- this is the place to be. If you care about the quality of food, coffee and that some smug little wanna-be hipsters (both male and female) at the front don't get their rocks off by being obnoxious, avoid this place. It just isn't a pleasant way to start off your morning. To the manager/owner: if you care at all about how customers are treated in your establishment, a little training on customer service is warranted. read more

The coffee was the only redeeming quality this place had, and that's not saying much. My friends and I stopped here for a quick bite before heading out of town - quick it was not! We waited 45 minutes to get a couple of bagel sandwiches that could have been assembled by the blind faster than these people, and were cold by the time we got them. The staff was slow and did not apologize for the long wait, cold food, or rude attitude. I would not recommend coming here unless you want a cup of mediocre, not that hot coffee or have hours to waste waiting on sub-par food. read more

Loved the brisket sandwich I grabbed on my drive out of Sonoma, and it was one of the yummiest sandwiches I've tasted. Wish I had bought some brisket to bring home--they sell them by the half or full pound. The location is also great, which is right across the street from the Fairmont Sonoma Mission Inn, where I was staying. The reason why this isn't a 5-star review is how they prepared chai with almond milk. I had it twice on two consecutive mornings. Not sure why, but it tasted somewhat burned on both mornings. I rather enjoy coffee. And with what can only be described as the great slaughter of the traditional coffeehouse, I am ALWAYS on the lookout for a good place to get a nice, regular cup o' joe. I don't require anything fancy, mind you. Actually, I quite prefer you don't misto or frap my coffee. It doesn't need to be bone dry and actually, don't fret over the "whip" situation. I got it handled. Just pour me a medium (yeah, I said it), dark or espresso roast and hand it over the counter. Really. So, with all of that in mind, I wanted to fall madly in love with Barking Dog. I envisioned myself waking early, tossing on jeans and flip-flops and venturing over to grab two cups and a paper. Again, nothing fancy. What I found however was nothing short of hipster heaven. It was really very remarkable. This was the first time that I had ever felt unhip at 9:30am in the Springs grabbing a couple of cups of coffee to go. I mean, sure I had my iPhone.. but merely one Apple product seemed arbitrary by comparison. I waited an uncomfortably long time in line while strangers crowed in behind me to "see and be scene" and unattended children danced, fell, and cried around my feet. It really seemed more like a meeting of the young and tragically cool, or perhaps the "Who's who of the who" in Sonoma. Of course, in the interest of great storytelling I am exaggerating, but really only slightly. After placing my order and being handed two to-go cups (without lids), I took a seat on the couch and waited for my two breakfast sandwiches. And I waited. When the line calmed down a bit I ventured back up to the counter to ask for lids for my cups. The counter staff certainly was friendly enough, that is not my complaint. I was given my lids, and took them back to my waiting area, only to find that a sweet couple in fedoras and leather sandals had claimed the adored couch for their very own. I took my coffee and shoved myself awkwardly into a corner close enough to the counter to be able to spot, then swoop upon my sandwiches when ready. Then I waited. And I waited. It seemed as though the young man in the "kitchen" was making orders based on his particular interest level, or perhaps it was alphabetical based upon ingredients... I'm unsure. In any event, it most certainly was not based upon the order in which he received tickets, as at least three people who placed their orders after mine left with their order before I did. Oh well. I wanted to like this place as finding good (or really good) smoked meats are hard to find. Well they are not good here. Tried the brisket and it was dry and didn't have any taste from it being smoked. Smoked meats have a distinctive taste. The potato salad is drowning in mayo. I arrived at 5:20pm and you would have thought I arrived two minutes before closing. The young woman, with multiple piercings on her face, was extremely rude. She must be an owners daughter or girlfriend because with customer service skills (or should I say lack thereof) that she had, she should not be employed. Rude and short and didn't smile or anything positive to add to the experience. By the way- A half a pound of brisket, a small container of potato salad and a soda was exactly $15. I received no receipt! I will not be returning to this place. I'm sure they rely on tourists from the nearby hotel for a considerable amount of business. I'm not sure what locals see in this place with the lack of service they provide. I will not be recommending this place to anybody nor will I be going back. read more

Other than the patrons, Barking Dog is exactly what I'd expect in a coffee house. The coffee (an Americana) was excellent; the pastry (a coffee cake) was good. Maybe the complaints on Yelp were from people who think Starbucks is good. ;) The only Yelp complaint I saw that seems to be valid is that a number of the patrons appear to be running their own daycare out if the shop. Please, parents: your children should not be napping on the floor of a coffee house. They should not have brought a bucket of their own toys either. This isn't your living room. read more

I'm not exactly a local, as I live in Santa Rosa, but to me the half hour drive is well worth the delicious drinks and inviting atmosphere. I'm surprised to see so many unfriendly reviews; the employees have been cheerful and willing to recommend drinks each time I've been in. Plus they have free WiFi, and accommodating seating arrangements where I can get work done. Their coffee was good and I even took some beans home to Santa Rosa to share with my family and friends. I'm not much of a coffee drinker (except during finals week) but their tea selection is diverse and tasty. I'm also a fan of their blended drinks, especially the smoothies. My favorite so far has been Ema's Smoothie, it's loaded with healthy and yummy ingredients. I plan on coming back to sample more their coffee, and the in-house baked pastries while I prepare for the end of the semester. read more

I am basing my 5 star review off their "Morning Glory," muffin which included carrots, raisins, apples and sunflower seeds. It was seriously the best muffin I've ever had! I really should have bought more for the road. There's some nice outdoor picnic tables to sit on which is good for dog friendly breakfast/lunch. Ok, I just got back from the Barking Dog. My experience was less than stallar. I have been going there on and off for the past 2-3 years for coffee. I usually go in during happy hour for a medium coffee. During happy hour, the price for a medium coffee is $1.25. Well, today, a lady named betty was working, and she said happy hour doesn't apply to a medium coffee. Well, I explained, I have been coming here for over two years, and it's always been $1.25. She again insisted, happy hour does not include a medium cup of coffee. So, Betty goes to the back room, and began speaking with the manager (I presume he's the manager). The conversation goes like this: Betty' A medium coffee is not part of happy hour. Manager' A medium coffee "is" included in happy hour. Betty again precedes to say, happy hour does not include a medium cup of coffee. The manager then says, small, medium and large coffee is .50 off during happy hour. Betty again contradicts the manager. This is going on for 5 minutes, all the while, I'm standing at the counter, waiting for my coffee. I got to the point where I just said, I can't believe this. All this hassle for a cup of coffee. So, after about 5 minutes has elapsed, betty comes back to the counter, and has the young boy ring me up a medium coffee for $1.25. The way they should have when I ordered my coffee, the way they had been for the past 2-3 years. So, now this young boy, approximately 16-17 years old, starts lecturing me about how getting upset is not going to help anything. I politely told the young boy, I really don't need you lecturing me. The boy again says, getting upset isn't going to help anything. I again politely said, please, I don't need you lecturing me. That's when another customer whom overheard this entire ordeal, say, You two are out of line. The customer was referring to Betty, and the young boy. The boy then continues to lecture me. The other customer then said, you are harrassing him (just to clairify, the other customer was referring to the young boy harrassing me). What ever happened to, the customer is always right? So, one last time, I said, don't lecture me. That's when the manager walked around, accused me of acting inappropriately, and told ME to leave. Whatever happened to the customer is always right? Whatever happened to customer service? Apparently it doesn't exist in this store. Peter, you just lost a customer for life. If someone asks me where to get a cup of coffee, I will not be directing them to the barking dog, as this isn't the first time I have been insulted by an employee of this establishment. I've worked in retail for a large portion of my adult life. I am now in the hospitality industry. In these tough times, you need all the customers you can get. I have learned, in all my years of working retail and hospitality, you do not insult your customers. Instead, you court your customers, if you can understand that. read more

I stopped here twice for coffee passing through to spend the weekend in Kenwood. On the way back I added a bacon, egg and cheese bagel sandwich. I got it to go to eat in the car on the way home, back to the city. The bacon was thick but way too undercooked, flimsy/rubbery/chewy and disgusting. I'd bet a lot of money that a small percentage of the population prefers non-crispy bacon to crispy bacon. Can't all places just make it crispy by default?! I took off every piece and just ate the cheese, egg and bagel. A big disappointment. read more

Stopped in for brunch with my fiancee on her birthday. She got a nice fruit smoothie and "The Drooler" which she said was outstanding. The smoothie was very fresh tasting and very creamy, she is lactose intolerant so they subbed milk with almond milk. YUM! I got "The Retreiver" which is sliced chicken bbq sauce and cheddar cheese on a ciabata roll. Tangy bbq sauce and the cheese had good flavor also. Overall a nice atmosphere and great food n drink. highly recommend for a quick stop in for coffee and a bite. read more
