This place is a GEM. I checked this restaurant out on Yelp while I was starving and the reviews looked so good that I decided to give it a try. First of all, my cousin and I arrived on a Friday around 5:30 PM and it had already started getting hectic. She told me that while she had never dined there, she had always seen it very busy, so it would probably be best to make a reservation in the future. We were seated immediately and all of the staff was SO friendly! We ordered the wings to start and when I say they were literally one of the top 5 chicken wings I've ever had, I'm not exaggerating. I could literally order those twice & have a side of fries and call it a day. They were delicious. My cousin ordered the burger, and I had the short rib with polenta. I'm not usually a fan of polenta, but this meal was rich and creamy. My cousin and I were so full when we left & had enough food to take home. I'm definitely going to be back. I was really excited to try out Barley Mac due to the great reviews. I went in a Saturday afternoon for brunch. Once I arrived, I was given notice that I had a 90 minute limit for my reservation. It took over 20 minutes for me to get my mimosa due to the waiter forgetting to put it in the first time I ordered. Once I got it, it was gross. Also, if you want the brunch package special everyone at the table has to get it. We opted out. Instead I ordered shrimp tacos & the crab Mac & cheese. The shrimp tacos were good & so was the Mac and cheese until I started to eat more. I noticed the bottom was scorched, tasted & smelled burnt so I sent it back. The waiter was nice and offered to replace etc, but I declined. I also ordered a breakfast mule which was good, but I was expecting it to come in a Moscow mule glass with ice as it was not very cold; instead it came in a wine glass. We went here for brunch after the Army 10 Miler when alllll the Courthouse/Clarendon restaurants were jam packed with 3 hour waits. Barley Mac could accommodate our large group with no problem and I'm so glad it worked out! They have a fun make-your-own mimosa deal where you get to choose your own juice flavors and my BELT (Bacon, Egg, Lettuce, Tomato) was delicious. Barley Mac is a great place to grab a glass of wine/whiskey without a doubt. The service has always been great and friendly. I have run into a couple of occasions where I curiously asked questions about certain drinks (as they do have a great selection) but on 2 occasions the person behind the bar was unable to give me any information which was disappointing. The food has always been good, though I typically prefer to order my food to go while I sip wine. It can be a little tricky to get service when you're on the high top tables by the bar however, which has been frustrating. The only other negative is that although they have TV's, they stuffed them in there at a weird, high angle which makes for a funny, but uncomfortable viewing. Still, I wouldn't go there for a sporting event but it's worth noting since they included TV's. Overall it's a great spot and if you see me, buy me a drink. read more

The menu is mostly American food - pizza, steak - but has some eclectic choices as well despite being a decently small menu. The appetizers are a great choice and my favorites include the brussels sprouts and coccoli (cheese, honey, prosciutto and donuts). My only complaint is that they change the menu every so often and seem to take off some great items (the leek and mushroom pizza). This is a very pretentious place. For example they have Mexican street corn as a small plate. It's $12 for literally one corn cob. They offer truffle Mac and cheese for $10. More like just mac. There was little to no cheese at all. The service is slow and they don't give any "f"s. Do yourself a favor and go to the bar on the corner called Quinn's. Mediocre food. Terrible service. The host was really rude to me and my partner. The way she first addressed me when I checked in for our reservation was not nice, and definitely not welcoming. We arrived a little bit before our reservation and she told me that we needed to wait for people to leave, clean the table, and then we can sit. We moved to the side and a couple of minutes later she comes back saying that we could sit in the bar area. Why not mention that at first? So disappointing. Also, looking around you can tell that we were not the only ones that struggled with tables... The appetizer was fast, but then we had to wait at least 15-20 minutes for our food. My partner ordered a side of pancakes that were really stale, cold, and just flavorless. I ordered the spinach & mushroom omelette and that wasn't bad but it just took forever. read more

The food was okay but i did not like my experience or service. We arrived at 12:30pm and were told that the last call to order food and drink was at 12:45pm because they were hosting a large party. My husband began ordering from the lunch/dinner menu. He was told by our server that they were only serving brunch and we were reminded that final time to order everything was12:45pm. We ordered our drinks, mains, and dessert at the same time. 10 minutes later another couple entered, were seated, and given menus. The host, noticing that I was upset, came and said that 12:45 was last call for brunch and that they're now serving lunch. This upset me because we could've waited 10 minutes to order from the lunch/dinner menu and receive the food we actually wanted. I also didn't have to order all my drinks at one time because the other couple were ordering drinks as well, which means there was no last call for alcohol either. I complained to the manager and was told that he would take 10% off our total for their mistake. My husband told me later that 10% was never taken off the bill. This was an overall bad experience and we will not be returning to Barley Mac. read more

Inconsistent. We frequent Barley Mac often as we live nearby and although their food and cocktails are delicious, sometimes the service is AMAZING and sometimes it is not. We got turned away because although they had tables open, their kitchen was too backed up to order anything until 4pm (it was around 230 pm on a weekend) so we were allowed to sit but would have to wait an hour and a half to order. Sometimes the service is timely, sometimes it is not. Sometimes their outdoor heaters would work, sometimes they wouldn't (more in Covid times). I love this place! It is perfect for happy hour, dinner and brunch!! Any time they have an event such as their BBQ I highly recommend snagging a ticket. The food is out of this world and you get to taste whiskeys for free! My only complaint is when they have a featured cocktail that isn't whiskey based.. if you are advertising as a whiskey bar I think that should be pretty standard. The food is awesome, on point, consistently executed and a changing menu all with affordable "neighborhood pricing." Cocktails are simple and well executed every time and service is always welcoming and warm. The down side - the crowd gets very bridge and tunnel /after work brassy and unsavory drunk - you know what I mean, like not sexy - this not a date place. Yelpers!! Be it known that my wife and I met some friends at Barley Mac this evening and it was absolutely superb. The wait staff was swift and the food was excellent. I had the rosemary charred chicken which was perfectly seasoned and very moist. While I don't care for sprouts, I did thoroughly enjoy the sweet potato puree. My wife ordered the bone-in short rib, and after one bite I was ready to steal her meal like Uncle Sam steals a quarter of my paycheck. I've come to Barley Mac about 3 times now and the food and service has been amazing all 3 times, but I will say their brunch options have changed every time as well which is a little frustrating. On my first visit they offered $15 bottomless mimosas with an entre for an additional $00.1 for every extra mimosa...so it was a great deal. The second time i went it was $35 for an entre and bottomless mimosas. The 3rd time, there were no more bottomless mimosas option, they were selling bottles of champagne $20 for one or $30 for 2 and an additional $4 for any mixing flavors other than orange. Honestly, none of these deals are bad in my opinion but the inconsistency is kind of annoying and it makes me worried they may be struggling which would suck because I love their food. All the food items I highly recommend are their steak and eggs, breakfast pizza, and their lobster benedict. All three items are absolutely amazing. Another thing I noticed is that they don't get very busy, so it is great for last minute reservations or if you have a larger group. HIGHLY, HIGHLY, HIGHLY recommend this place! read more

My goodness, was this place good! From the food to the service, our meal was fantastic! My boyfriend and I shared the parmigiana truffle potato skins, they came out piping hot and delicious. For a main course I had the Angel hair with Wagyu meatballs and it was amazing. My boyfriend had the Italian Meats pizza and really enjoyed it. The server was awesome and he even brought out extra Pancetta for our potato skins, suggesting that you can never have enough Pancetta. This will be my first of many reviews in the D.M.V. Area. I ate dinner at Kona Grill down the street Friday night and while I was walking there I saw Barley Mac and the atmosphere looked great. ( open patio, nice music, and dim atmosphere ). I had to try it out. I came the next day with my girlfriend at 10:50pm. I was greeted by one of the newest addition to the hosting staff. He seem pretty flustered but quickly sat us down at a table. I was unaware that the kitchen closed in less than ten minutes but our server Patrick still did a great job of up selling me the two special entrees for the night and a glass of wine. Our entrees took 30 minutes to come to our table which was brought by the manager Sean. He apologized for the lateness of the food and gave us a comp and a dessert on the house. The entrees were missing some ingredients and were way below par but this is where i found out the kitchen was closing sooner than i thought. Solid staple in the neighborhood! Great spot for a happy hour with coworkers or hungry for tasty dishes! The onion soup is really good and the prosciutto and donut appetizer is a must try! My favorite dish on the menu is the gnocchi bolognese made with veal! As a native Italian, this dish is solid delicious every time I've had it. Always a good idea ! Recently tried the lobster pasta special which was ravioli, I wasn't impressed with the dish, had small pieces of lobster and a bland plain tomato sauce, not worth getting it. But the chicken and mushroom pappardelle was extremely good and must try! Service is always on point! Max is the bar manager and he is always attentive with your drinks. Also the Malbec wine was a good pairing with our meal, smooth and exactly what I was in the mood for on a Thursday night. I'm really not sure how I feel about this place. My wife and I decided to get dinner here on a Friday night. The staff was attentive and the overall service was very good. We started off with the Coccoli; it was very good. We both got the Brown Derby cocktail which was also good. The major let down came with our main courses. My wife got the Chilean Sea-bass special and I got the lump crab cakes. My wife's Sea-bass was ok, it was actually a-little bland. I got the lump crab cakes(2) which again was ok, neither the best or worst crab cakes I've had. I did think the serving size of the crab cakes was a-little small, especially given the price of $30. The real surprise came when we got our check. It turns out that the Sea-bass special which was set at the market rate on the menu was $35. I was shocked since I didn't think the size, taste, and presentation was worth that much. In conclusion, I'm not sure I would try this place again, our meals seemed grossly overpriced given the lack of complexity of flavors, size, and presentation. Based upon my experience I would say this place seemed very trendy but the substance of our main courses didn't amount to much. read more
