Truffle fries
Rachel H.

Went to barely Mac and everything was underwhelming, we were seen by 4 different servers but none took our orders or got us drinks. The food though was also not great, wings were probably the best but the ranch was not good. The truffle fries were drowning in truffle oil yet somehow had no truffle flavor but extremely oily. We got a beer, calamari, fries, wings, and a burger and it was $85 which is wild but also for terrible food it truly was not worth it. Out of all the great places in VA and DC, this is not it.

Came in for Happy Hour, it started to get busy around 5:30 which was perfect. Ordered the Mexican Mule (tequila) and an Italian meats pizza. It was super tasty. Service was great and staff was friendly. I will come back.

Very mediocre mac and cheese. Tasted also play doh-y. It could be a good happy hour place but purely for food, it's expensive for food you can easily make at home. Large space and service was very speedy though!

Southwest Chicken Salad (soooo good!!)

Spent 5 weeks in Rosslyn the beginning of the summer and we're back again for 2 weeks - the VRBO we're renting/rented is right around the corner from Barley Mac so of course we wanted to try it out. And I'm glad we did. My husband and son love the prime dip and my fave is the Southwest Chicken salad (best salad I've ever had and that's saying a lot). We've had awesome servers and having now gone 3x, every experience has been top notch - will miss Barley Mac when we head home. Beautiful restaurant, too!

Awesome food, reasonable prices, and great service at Barley Mac! I enjoyed the crab cake the most and appreciate the generous portions. The restaurant had such a cozy vibe during the holidays. Would recommend checking this place out if you're near Rosslyn!

Buffalo Mac

Stopped by on a Saturday and it wasn't busy. We requested to be seated outside in the shade. Our waitress eventually came over few minutes and we placed our orders. We ordered the following: Barley Mac Tacos (Salmon). The salmon was good but overshadowed by the tomatoes. The fries were DELICOUS. Italian Meats Pizza. I am not sure what type of ground beef they are using but it tastes like dog food. The Pepperoni's were good but could be better placed throughout the pizza vs the dead center. The bacon is practically unnoticeable. The Buffalo Mac & Cheese was different. You can definitely taste the Buffalo flavor. I enjoyed the chicken with it as well. The crab Mac and Cheese was good as well. Nice portion of crab meat. The Margherta pizza was nothing special. We. Could do without. Overall the service was nice and the location is cool. The food however, needs some work. I don't think I'd order anything again except for the fries. Thanks for the time. I hope the food gets better.

HAPPY HOUR MENU

NEW YEAR = NEW FOOD + NEW BOOZE Met up with one of my best friends for a New Year's Week happy hour and chit-chat session. We enjoyed several drinks and shared a few appetizers. What we had: STRAWBERRY MARGARITA JALAPEÑO DEVILED EGGS MEATBALLS CLASSICO PEPPERONI PIZZA CRÈME BRÛLÉE CHEESECAKE Everything was delish. I'll definitely be back for more of the same and possibly a few other items I eyed on the menu. We were there on a Wednesday around 4pm and it wasn't very busy (at least in the section where we were sitting). Once we left, I noticed more of a crowd throughout the restaurant. The service was good and we were checked on often enough where we didn't feel badgered or ignored. __ I eat. @f.hux I thrift. @DCthriftish

Came here for a network event got dinner after on a rainy friday. Seats are pretty limited. One side is a bar and one side for the restaurant. The lobster mac was delicious. It could be a app to share or a full meal. Calamari was tasty. The wings were tender and flavorful as well. Price was high but taste was there so I cant complain. Parking all around the neighborhood.

Breakfast Gnocchi

Came here with high hopes for the breakfast gnocchi. I love gnocchi, pesto and eggs. I was sadly disappointed. The gnocchi had the consistency of fried mashed potatoes bites with an after taste of hash browns. I asked for eggs over easy. They came out over medium. The egg white omelet was cooked well. It was very pepper forward, just be aware. The Bloody Mary was spicy but lacked flavor. Would not order again. The coffee was good. Service was good. Location is on point. Lots of street parking. They have a brunch menu with many options.

We went here in the summer on a weekend at around 4pm. It was not busy at all - the waiters were very nice, providing some recommendations and answering our questions. We sat outside and they were dog friendly, providing a bowl of water. The QR code scanned menu was a bit confusing - a few times, the beers listed on the QR code said it was on tap but the waiter said it was bottled. Some of the drinks also didn't have prices listed (but some did). Overall, their QR menu needs some work - I would recommend people ask the waiters just be to sure that a drink is on tap versus bottled/canned. I ordered a lobster bisque and we got a shared order of potato wedges. The lobster bisque was good - but the serving size was pretty small. I'd recommend it for someone who wasn't that hungry; it's definitely not a substitute for a meal. The bisque is very rich and flavorful - though a bit salty. The potato wedges were good. Overall, solid food - but nothing super memorable. The prices are a bit on the higher side and I don't think it's super worth it. If you are in the area, I would have no problem recommending this place - but I wouldn't go out of the way to come here.

Huevos rancheros

Delicious food and nice kitchen staff, but it was not crowded and service was super slow. It took an hour to get a bottle for mimosas and my trip was largely ignored. They were nice and again, bomb food, but I will not return.

Is there an easy parking nearby? I am handicapped and can’t walk long distances.

Yes, parking is good in that area

Are waitstaff still wearing mask?

Hey Charmin! Only the ones that have not been vaccinated or just being extra careful. Thanks and hope this helps!

Is there outdoor seating available (with heaters)?

There was outdoor seating and heaters when I went there for brunch in late September.

When will they provide brunch?

10.30 am sunday

Do the bathrooms have a changing station for a baby?

They have a counter off to the side where you could possibly change a baby

Sounds like a great atmosphere. I'm looking for a brunch spot in Arlington that also has somewhat of a sports vibe for football on Sundays. Is this the place?

I'm a sports fan and personally would not come here for a sport vibe brunch. It's a beautiful place, great atmosphere, and delicious food, so if you want something more upscale, sports-like than this might be your place. I also do not remember there… Read more

The recommendation to pair the honey with the cheese on the biscuits was excellent and took an already great item to another level. The broccolini, coffee, and espresso shot were not our favorites of the evening, but honestly, the other dishes were so good that we quickly forgot about them. The manager was actively walking around the restaurant, making sure that every guest were enjoying their dinner. The food was good all around but there are some dishes that outshine the rest. The ribeye and New York strip were very good. The butchers steak I got for my son and he didn't really like it, it was lacking flavor. If you do anything when you go, please make sure to get the biscuits. Hands down THE BEST BISCUITS I've ever had lol. They are the most flaky and buttery biscuits, you can count each layer that these have. Pro tip is to ask for butter and the house made jam. The pimento cheese is good with them but it becomes a little too decadent. Overall I'm happy we made the decision to come here, we will be back soon.

Thankfully we ended up at the Unconventional Diner and it was perfect for satisfying everyone in the group!! We were all able to get tasty drinks- from n/a Hibiscus Citrus lemonade, white wine, a cinnamon toast old fashioned (what? A cereal inspired old fashioned, yes please and it was fantastic!), and a Bourbon basil smash. Then the crew settled on some food-the waiter was patient with the questions and contemplation from the table (thank you!). We started with the SKILLET CORNBREAD with Habanero Honey Butter | Sea Salt (v) And that was melt in your mouth cornbread. Damn. Real cornbread seems hard to come by any more and this is the real deal. And the honey butter and flake sea salt-can't go wrong. I'm a spice weeny-for reals-and this was incredible. It's a MUST get. Across the table we had two of the double cheese burgers (I warned, we have a lack of adventurous eaters) -and they both said the burgers were the best they've had. I had the Philly French double dip, with horseradish cream and caramelized onions-so fantastic-the roast beef was melt in your mouth and the broth was the perfect saltiness. Our fourth got the fried chicken sandwich and really loved the dill pickle slaw that came with it, and the chicken was not over cooked and not raw-perfect! We all had fries with our meals, the thinner kind with light seasoning and none of us could stop eating them, even when we were clearly full, the fries just kept disappearing.

The standout of the morning was the breakfast side potatoes--crispy, seasoned perfectly, and easily something I'd come back for. The breadbasket came with three pastries, which felt a bit smaller than expected, but the almond croissant more than made up for it. On the heartier side, the chicken and waffles were extremely filling thanks to the dense waffles, so definitely a dish to tackle with an appetite. One of the biggest surprises was the brunch salad with salmon, which ended up being one of the best salads I've had in a long time--fresh, balanced, and satisfying. The breakfast sandwich was another highlight: so good that it's now the new standard I'll compare all other breakfast sandwiches to. The smoked salmon bagel was also a fun experience, served deconstructed so you can build each bite exactly how you like it. Not everything was a hit--the French toast wasn't my favorite--but the overall meal was strong enough that it barely detracted from the experience. Brunch offers a few additions beyond the regular breakfast menu, but overall it's very similar to their standard breakfast, just with a couple of extra options. It tends to get full on the weekends to make a reservation. Bottom line: Penbrook is a beautiful hotel restaurant that punches above its weight--excellent service, memorable dishes, and several items worth returning for.
