My Fiancé and I came here before heading to dinner to grab some drinks and appetizers. Upon walking in the door we felt very welcomed. The manager Tania was Amazing, so personable but professional. I enjoyed her spirit and good vibes! My fiancé is a huge supporter of MurLarkey and was very excited to see it on the shelves! I tried the Mai Tai margarita and it was pretty delicious along with the dry rub and Buffalo wings. Sat outside on a Saturday night. First off, their outdoor area is really spacious and set back from the road. There was plenty of room between tables. Offsite happy hour for the office, and one of the office staff chose Barley Mac. Never heard of this place before, but it's a great place for a big gathering, with darkened lights and heavy wooden tables. The drink menu is extensive, so everyone got the drink they wanted (I got a Heineken 0% - hooray for a menu that includes *good* nonalcoholic beer!). The first thing you'll notice is that the appetizers are called "small plates" and they appear expensive ($14 for grilled octopus?) - but the size of these plates are HUGE. We ordered the cocoli (fried donut balls with slices of prosciutto and cheese), calamari (a basket of lightly fried squid with two dipping sauces), ceviche (a big mound of shrimp, scallops, and calamari lightly seasoned), and steamed mussels. There was plenty to go around, and even some leftovers. A few of us were still hungry and ordered a main dish - I was part of the fig & prosciutto pizza team, which served four people easily. At the end of the evening, we were all full and it cost ~$20 including drinks and tip. A fun night for everyone with tasty food. I ended up ordering a pizza with white sauce when it didn't say that on the menu (the Tuscan chicken pizza). It was still good - just make sure you know that before you order! If you want American comfort food, or a good gastropub to go to, this place will fit the bill. You don't need reservations to come here as the space is pretty big. The portion sizes are very generous, and there's a good variety of comfort food and healthy food that you can order off the menu. The prices are reasonable as well, for the quantity of food that you get. - Brussel Sprouts ($9) - You get a ton of brussel sprouts and they are deep fried and crunchy and delicious. There's some pulled pork at the bottom, which is a nice complement, and a few gooseberries (which are a bit odd) - Truffle Mac & Cheese ($10) - We really enjoyed the truffle mac & cheese. It was cheesy but not overly cheesy, and the noodles were al dente and not soggy. This didn't seem like the kind of mac & cheese that was baked for a long time with a crusty and cheesy crust on top, but it did have breadcrumbs which went well with it. I would get this again - it's definitely shareable between 2-3 people. - Summer Salad ($12) - The salad was really good; healthy, lots of fruit (peaches & strawberries), and we paid an extra $3 for grilled chicken - the chicken was huge and it was good. I would get this again. The dressing was light and not overpowering, and the salad wasn't overdressed. - Barley Mac Burger ($15) - I'm pregnant, so I had to get the burger well-done, so it was a bit on the dry side (but to be expected with a well-done burger). But the burger itself was still delicious, with a brioche bun, and nice accompaniments like bacon, arugula, smoked provolone, and aioli. I would get this again; I also like the fries that came with it - they actually tasted like potatoes and not just like generic, cheap frozen french-fries. Overall, if you're looking for a good meal at reasonable prices and with big portions, this place is a good bet. Out of my norm and neighborhoods, I decided to do happy hour in NoVA per a friend's suggestion. Barley Mac was catering to a group party or reservation next to us and forgot about us altogether. I don't expect very much in situations like these, but I do have a minimum expectation, which was not met. We sat down around 530 and ordered drinks almost immediately. We place HH fish taco orders around 610 and they were nowhere to be seen until 710 (half of them). The bartender tried to accommodate us despite the mistake, but coordination with the kitchen had not followed through. When we did get the tacos, they were cold and fishy. In some redemption, we were comped the tacos. However, with the swath of HH bars/restaurants on my way home and this quality/value, I don't think I'll be back and I hope to quickly forget the experience altogether. read more

One of the more interesting menus in Arlington, Barley Mac is one of those places you'll eventually find yourself at. I was actually more impressed with the appetizers than the main course but that's not to take away from anything they serve here as there's very unique options that either draw you in or repel you from a certain item. Happy hour review: I came here on a Wednesday evening with a few friends for a lovely happy hour. One of my friends made a reservation so we were seated immediately, but it looked like there were plenty of empty tables so making a res for HH probably isn't necessary. They have a nice outdoor seating area which I was a big fan of. Overall the drinks and food were pretty good and reasonably priced, though I thought the selection was a little bit limited. I ended up ordering the cocktail of the month, which was a very tasty orange mint julep. A couple of my friends got the white wine which was also good and served in beautiful wine glasses. For food I got the baja fish tacos which were just ok (be warned, they're kind of spicy). We also split a pepperoni pizza which was definitely my favorite part (next time I'm gonna skip the tacos and get a whole pizza for myself)! The service was great too. We all split a bottle of wine, although the list of options weren't that great. For the meal, my friend and I split a few things, but nothing stood out as even good. The truffle mac and cheese side was way too watery - which was really disappointing. Our server was nice enough, although we noticed she didn't come by as often as other servers did.
