Wonderful evening with friends welcoming environment fabulous menu and the food was perfect. Although not a Pizza place as a shared app Saturday nite would bring me back again just st for the pizza .The Caesar salad excellent my grilled branzino was perfect. Desert of chocolate gnocchi was unusual creative and really good. We ate inside but the outside dining and beautiful bar was inviting. We had an even better time than expected as we have been waiting patiently for Barly Mac to open. Had a reservation Friday night and the place was packed but had a lively vibe to it (a little loud, to be expected). We had a reservation and got a booth in the main dining room. Our server Harold was beyond knowledgeable, professional and friendly. He walked us through the cocktail, appetizer,entree and dessert menu. I forget his name, but the beverage manager himself stopped by to see how we liked our suggested cocktails (their old fashion and another bourbon drink borrowed from a bar in NY which we loved). For food, Harold explained in detail their most popular, his favorites and our many questions, even pairing wines with entrees per our request. As per his guidance we had the Cocoli, a Gnocchi dish and the short ribs to share. Our food was paced, table was kept perfect, utensils and plates replaced several times, the kind of stuff you see at high end places. We had a weird request for dessert and were told if they could they would, which they did. This is probably going to be a busy spot from here on out, so expect loud and lively, but good approachable food and crisp and detailed service. read more

First time at Barley Mac tonight and just sat in the bar area and had appetizers, but was so impressed with the food, service, and overall atmosphere that I plan on returning often. We had the octopus (delicious), meatballs (very good), and brussels sprouts (out of this world - best I've ever had!). Our server was attentive and friendly giving good food recommendations and providing excellent service throughout the night. The bar area was full but I could still easily talk with my friend. I can't say enough good things about this restaurant. Our server, Stevie, was knowledgeable, helpful, and hilarious. The coccoli (fried dough, truffle honey, prosciutto, and stracchino) appetizer was to. die. for. The Inside Job is possibly my new favorite cocktail. The carmelization on the brussels sprouts bourbon pizza needed a little longer, but it was still a good flavor combo. Gave it a about 4 tries. Failed miserably, rather progressively. Quite frankly, this place is so bad, I highly doubt it'll remain stay in business here in Rosslyn; it will most likely close down rather soon. So, service is absolutely awful, on more than one occasion, the waiting staff were really rude, food quality is poor, and quite the terrible experience. I've loved Barley Mac especially the cocoli appetizer. I went there for dinner with friends on 6/1 and was surprised to encounter a new "summer menu." They added all these small plates and got rid of many good entrees. I was not impressed with the new menu. I'm not interested in small plates--that may appeal to women who don't eat much but you need a menu that appeals to everyone. The new entrees are too fru fru and unappealing, along with increased prices. The pizza and burger remain a staple but you really should bring back some of your excellent entrees like the lobster pasta, chicken parmigiana and angel hair with meatballs. Not sure I'll be back again as soon--disappointed with your changes. read more

This is the best local spot in Rosslyn. They have a great happy hour that my Husband and I frequent all the time. The bar area staff are absolutely phenomenal! Shout out to the always amazing Hector, he is so nice and remembers us every time we come. Even when he is not waiting on us, he still comes and says hi. The food is awesome, and I know this is a bold statement but they have the best wings I've ever had! They are very accommodating as well. One time they were very busy and we waited over an hour for 2 burgers, and they took our food off the bill without us saying anything at all. I just don't have enough great things to say about this place, highly recommend!! read more

I went here last Friday night with my husband and two friends. Overall our experience was just okay. My husband had the short ribs and really raved about them. He also thought the Old Fashioned was excellent. However everything else was just fine. The meatballs were just average and not as tender as I was expecting. The salads with grilled chicken had very thick dressing and not much seasoning. I will say the portions were very large. The reason for the three stars is mostly the pushy service and watered down cocktail I ordered. I understand when you go out on a Friday night, you shouldnt stay at a table for too long, but THREE separate waiters tried to take my plate while it was still half full. We ordered another round of drinks and the waiter brought us our check before we had even taken our first sip. Then when we didn't have our cards out yet, he asked if we were ready to pay. It felt so rushed and not enjoyable. We felt like we were being forced out. Brand new restaurants often have kinks to work out early on, but I was really impressed by Barley Mac. Service was attentive without being overbearing, and the food and drinks were great. We started with the grilled octopus (tender and flavorful) and the coccoli (fried dough with cheese and prosciutto). This was a little messy but DELICIOUS and a large portion. We packed up about half to go so we would have room for entrees. I had the salmon and my boyfriend had the squid ink linguine. Both were awesome; we cleaned our plates. For drinks I started with a bourbon/iced tea/peach concoction (can't remember what it was called) which was just ok, but next I had the whiskey sour which was on point. I'd go back just for that drink. My boyfriend had the brown derby (bourbon/grapefruit/honey) which was good too. We were too full for dessert but everything on the menu sounded good. Came here for a massive family Saturday brunch. Our primary servers were the wonderful Raphi and David. After a little bit of a wait they managed to serve almost 30 of us at the same time and accommodate many high-maintenance and eccentric family members with ease :) I took off one star because someone in our party ordered the strawberry French toast. Multiple staff members checked in the see what was missing and reassure us it was being made ASAP. Thirty minutes later she still didn't have her food and we saw two other French toast plates come out of the kitchen and go to other tables. I asked the floor manager (?? female, dark hair, scowling, winged eyeliner) for a status update and she basically told me to back off and let her do her job. I get it, but she went full guard dog with no provocation and didn't own any responsibility for the missing dish. Thanks to the amazing kitchen staff as well as Raphi and David. We loved starting our day with your delicious food and lovely atmosphere and definitely won't hold that one hiccup against you! read more

Big fan of brunch! We got a table for 8 on the patio without issue. The mimosa bottles are such a great deal. The fun flavors are an added bonus. We got a bunch of apps to share (all fabulous) and entrees. Even with drinks it was under $40 per person. Will definitely be coming back for happy hour or dinner. read more

My wife and I visited the area and picked this place because it was near where we stayed. It was around 8:30 on a Friday, and we were seated immediately without a reservation. The hostess was very courteous, and our server arrived quickly. She was excellent, good pacing and very friendly. We ordered drinks from a decent whiskey menu. Rather than entrees, we shared three appetizers: Wagyu beef meatballs (my favorite), scallops with a roasted beet risotto (my wife's favorite), and fried calamari and zucchinis. All three were delicious, although my wife did not like the texture of the meatballs. We also had a wedge salad that was okay. We weren't crazy about their Brussel sprouts. The walnuts were tasty but the sprouts were too chewy despite a nice taste. Good, solid choice overall. read more

This place sure has lived up to the hype! I came here for Yelp Nova's Supper Club for July and was already ready to go back once we left! We had a pretty large group to begin with, so I was nervous the staff would hate us right off the bat. NOT the case! They were super accommodating and friendly, there was even a little mix up with the reservation which ended up working out perfectly! We started off with drinks, many people in the group ordered the house specials with Barley Mac's Bourbon. Once the whole group arrived, we ordered the calamari, coccoli, and the wings. Let me tell you, the coccoli was a huge hit! I had never had it before, but once I tried it, I cannot live without it! We scarfed down the apps and moved onto ordering our entrees, I had the roasted chicken, but tried a little bit of everyone's dinners (the gnocchi is bomb!). I would love to come back and try a few more dishes soon! It was on the expensive side, but worth every penny! read more

We stopped in for an early dinner while visiting the area. Our waitress was very kind and attentive. I got The Butchers Block sandwich, it was amazing. I was also able to taste the truffle mac and cheese - so good! Not one person in our party left disappointed. The Juniper on the cocktail menu was delicious. My boyfriend lives down the street from Barley Mac and we had been wanting to try it out but just haven't been in town. About 3 weeks ago, (July 8th) the night before his birthday we actually stopped by for an after dinner drink and were so impressed with their drink selection and I could not stop talking about the interior design, it looked so cool. The service that night was great, and our server at the bar mentioned that they do brunch and since it was my boyfriends 30th birthday that weekend, I went up to the hostess table where both the host and manager were standing, raved about how much we loved the restaurant so far and would really love to come back for brunch that weekend. The manager put us down for a large table for Sunday morning and also gave us 10% off coupon to use at brunch. We were very excited. Unfortunately, our brunch experience was the complete opposite of our experience the night prior. We waited 10 minutes before our waitress came over to acknowledge us. She handed us menus and walked away and we waited another 5-10 minutes before she came back to take our drink orders. Once we ordered our drinks, it took at least ANOTHER 15 minutes for her to bring our drinks. I would understand the delay if it was a busy morning and the restaurant was packed, but we were one of 4 tables seated. Most of the waiters were just standing around talking to each other and I couldn't understand where our waitress kept disappearing to. By the time we received our drinks, we ordered another round of drinks because we knew we'd finish our first drinks and would still take forever for her to come and check on us. I asked her for a recommendation on another drink, ordered it and when she finally came back, she said and I quote "my friend who was the bartender just finished his shift so there is someone new who made this drink for you, I can't guarantee it's going to be any good"... Really? She hardly came to the table to check on us, our food took an hour to get, drinks even longer it seemed like and when we were finally ready to pay, she hands us the bill and i put in the 10% coupon that the manager had given me into the book with my credit card and when she came back with our cards and receipt to sign and what do I see, she didn't put the coupon towards my bill. Of course, she wasn't anywhere in sight again and we were so annoyed and disappointed that after being there for so long and having spent that much money on sub-par service, we just left. The coupon was HUGE so there is no way she could have missed it missed it, and when i placed it into the book it was on top of the receipt and my credit card which means she moved the coupon to get my card, and then didn't even put it towards our bill. My boyfriend took the managers business card the same night he gave us the coupons and said he would reach out to him, but I felt like I needed to write a review because of how disappointed I was in that whole experience. I will say that the food was pretty good, but unfortunately the service was just SO bad that the food being good isn't enough for me to visit again anytime soon or recommend it to any friends. I hope that Barley Mac succeeds because I love Don Tito, but they really need to work on their wait staff. read more

Went to Barley Mac for the second time last night. The first was for brunch several weeks ago and it was excellent. This time was for dinner. Just one word: Wow. My girlfriend and I split the coccoli, scallops, and spinach salad with steak. We also tried several of the classic and winter cocktails. The food and drinks were all outstanding. And the service was perfect. I'd highly recommend for any meal, and we're already looking forward to going back. read more

I really wanted to like this place!! Great decor and atmosphere with a large patio perfect for an October Saturday brunch. It took the waiter quite some time to even greet us and bring us water - despite the lack of a crowd but we were patient. Once he did take our drink order (mimosas for $3!!) he tried to push the special which included a bottle of champagne...we politely declined and also ordered the coccoli as a starter. He stated it was their most popular appetizer - we couldn't wait to try it! He came back with the mimosas and got our entree order - I decided on the chicken gruyere sandwich and my friend chose the B.E.L.T. We waited at least 20-25 min before seeing another server - and when they arrived it was with our entrees (the coccoli never arrived). I was so disappointed- the fries were soggy and my grilled chicken seemed tough and too chewy - I removed most of it. My friend's B.E.L.T. was missing most of the B (bacon). Once we caught a glimpse of our waiter we told him of the missing bacon and to cancel the coccoli since it was supposed to be a starter - he eagerly complied with both requests and also comped the $6 for the mimosas. Overall, a very underwhelming and lackluster brunch (very disappointed). Hope their other patrons had better experiences! read more

Tried this place out for brunch and was very impressed. The coccoli starter was so delicious! Definitely would recommend. The lobster club house sandwich is really a lobster roll, and was very good, but a little pricey for the amount of lobster. The traditional eggs benedict was excellent - a great hollandaise sauce! As a visitor to the city we wanted to try this place out. It was ok. They try really hard to be a high end establishment. You can feel it in the atmosphere. The wait staff however was not super friendly. For that I deducted a star. We both had sandwiches and shared an appetizer. The appetizer which turned out to be bread balls with honey were okay, luckily it came with meat and cheese as that is what saved this appetizer. I had the lump crab cake sandwich and my boyfriend the Ny sirloin burger. The ingredients seem to be quality in everything. The presentation on the plates was good. Unfortunately they turned out to be excessively messy. The crab cake was lost in all of the slaw and its excessive juices. I ended up having to use a knife and fork and was unable to eat a portion of the bun because it was soggy from the slaw. The burger was also messy but otherwise ok. Another star deducted for the food. All in all this place is just another mediocre food place. I would suggest going down the street to Piola where you will get great food, drinks and service! read more

I ate at this restaurant previously with a group of friends so I was excited to go back for dinner with my husband, but unfortunately I am completely disappointed. My husband ordered a tomahawk pork chop which was actually really good but our civiche starter was really bad: salmon in cocktail sauce, scallops basically in mayonnaise, and shrimp in some weird green sauce. That's not what I think of when I think civiche and it just tasted gross. My order of pappardelle with lobster in a carbonara sauce came out looking amazing but the lobster was over cooked and rubbery, the peas weren't cooked really at all ironically, and the sauce was just a cream sauce with no flavor. I told the waitress that the peas weren't cooked when she saw my plate full of them, she just gave me a weird response and then we never saw her again. I might be back but definitely won't order that dish again. read more

We live in the neighborhood and Barley Mac had been one of our go-to spots: the food was always good and a nice selection of both cocktails and beers. We even regularly recommend it to visitors. Over time, the service had slowly been going downhill -- servers forgetting orders, getting more difficult to flag one down for a water refill -- but we figured growing pains. But after our last experience last night, sadly, we'll be finding a new place and directing out-of-town friends elsewhere. It began when we asked for a table -- the place was half empty but the host said she could only seat us in the loud bar area even though we came for a more quiet dinner. OK, fine -- that happens. It took 20 minutes for our server to even bring menus, and when we asked for a happy hour one (since we got stuck in the bar anyway) he huffed, came back about 10 minutes later and threw two dirty menus at us (covered in ketchup and the remains of someone's drink). We could see that the server was overwhelmed and that we might excuse-- he was covering the whole bar and half the patio -- but what was not excusable was his attitude; every time we asked a question he acted as if we personally were responsible for his bad night. When my husband asked him to repeat the cocktail of the month, he actually rolled his eyes. Finally, after about a half hour, we get to order: three small plates and two drinks. It takes 20 minutes to get the drinks, but we then wait over an hour and not one dish comes out. Finally, we asked to talk to the manager -- our host's response? "She's busy." Um, OK. Half the food arrives -- steak frites and pork belly -- and it's cold. Not like lukewarm, but like the oil already congealing on the fries and the sauce on the pork belly separating type of cold. We finally ask to see the manager again and about 15 minutes later she comes by. While she was very apologetic and explained that they had both multiple servers call off and managers call off, and she did comp the meal, the continued bad attitude of the waiter even after this (we made it very clear we knew it was not his fault but he acted even more offended when we explained we needed to talk to someone about the service) and a two-hour plus wait for cold food and two drinks -- and a half hour wait to tell someone "hey, this is not OK" -- just turned us off completely. I worked in restaurants and cafes throughout college, so I understand that awful nights can happen, but I also know that we always managed customer's expectations: we'd shut down part of the dining room if we couldn't handle the flow, and I certainly never had a customer who already complained twice wait so long for a manager. It's too bad to see a neighborhood joint go downhill so badly, but Arlington has a pretty bustling food scene, so it's better to take your money elsewhere. read more

"Truffle" Mac and cheese had zero truffles, so that wasn't a crazy start to my meal. Additionally, there was lipstick on all 3 water glasses at my table. Also, the wifi doesn't properly connect to the internet. Very frustrating. There are so many other bars in this area that I will go to instead. Up until this point, I had only visited the bar. But this weekend, several friends and I met up for a girls brunch. I appreciate that the restaurant was taking reservations early and we could get in at 1030. My biggest takeaway from this brunch was the outstanding service. Our waiter was phenomenal. He was chatty without being annoying, helpful about suggestions and all around friendly as he engaged with us. We decided to order serval items and share. The kale salad was delicious and the perfect size. The Brussels were surprising - the dried pineapple added a unique flavor but wished there was a little more and the crispy pork belly wasn't crisp. The Nutella pancakes were just the right amount of sweet and were larger than expected. The breakfast pizza was good but nothing to write home about and could have used a little more flavor but I'm also partial to spicy foods.
