We've been to Barley Mac once before and had a nice time, but tonight was a disaster, a combination of bad service and bad food. We ordered a few things; including the Pizza Margherita, which like any pizza Margherita has tomato, mozzarella, and basil. The pizza came dry and without basil. We asked the person who brought it why it didn't have basil, and he said he would check and walked away. A few minutes later, the waitress came and was not aware that we were waiting for the basil. She took the pizza and was gone for another five minutes. Finally; someone else showed up with the pizza cold and with a few small leaves on it. They looked strange and when we tried one it was clear that it was actually arugula and not basil at all. When the second waiter came back we told him that it was obviously not basil and he admitted that they had run out. We gave it a few bites but it was cold and dry and the sauce was not good; so we sent it back and ordered a few other small plates, which took a long time to arrive. In the meantime, an order of fries that we placed at the beginning took until the second round of ordering to arrive. In the end they comped the fries and a beverage, but not the food that we had ordered instead of the pizza. It's too little, too late after the whole night was ruined (it had been intended as a celebration). All this took place on a Sunday night when it was not crowded at all, so business is no excuse. I am definitely not going there again, especially considering that there is lots of restaurants in the neighborhood with better service and better food! read more

Service-driven. Customer-driven. The menu options could be more accommodating late night, but that's a product of function, and not to be judged. The thing is, it's kind of a late night place, so that would be nice. The food is surprisingly tasty and filling. The cocktails are beyond excellent. They know how to mix. It's pricey for what you're getting, but you live in DC, come on. It's pretty much the norm, price-wise for DC. The quality is high. The drinks are interesting, which is saying something. And the service is above excellence. The food is developing, in my opinion. I feel like they're feeling out what their food identity is. Their drink mixes are already there. Their atmosphere is nice. The restaurant was suggested by one of the members in our party so I didn't know what to expect. The menu was limited and the food was a bit pricey but that's ok if the dining experience is good. By experience, I mean cocktails, food, and service. I should've known I was in trouble when I got my drink. It had been sitting for a while before I got it so it was watered down. I then ordered the burger and truffle fries. One person at my table got mac and cheese, and the other got a salad. It took a REALLY long time to get our meals. Our server never came back to update us on the status of our order or even just ask us if we were ok. In fact, we didn't see him at our table again until it was time to pay. He didn't drop off our food or pick up the plates. He checked on the table in front of us and behind us several times, but never stopped at our table. That being said, I never got the chance to tell him that my fries were cold and the burger was lukewarm when they arrived. When it was time to pay, he couldn't even remember what we ordered. I really like this place. The restaurant is bright, open and trendy. The prices are a little steep, but not crazy. The food is amazing. It is the best food I've had in the Rosslyn area in a long time. Choose a burger, pizza, pasta, or a chicken sandwich for lunch if you are budget conscious. I went here with the wife for an impromptu date night out. I had the Wagyu beef meatball appetizer and THOROUGHLY enjoyed them, and it made me almost want to order them again with the angel hair as a main course. The meat, sauce, and garnishing cheese led to a rich and delicious blend of favors coming together. For a main course, I had the rib-eye steak, and was first impressed with fact that my rare steak was actually cooked rare (many places overcook). That got them off to a good start, in my opinion. The steak was well seasoned, and a good cut of meat. The accompany vegetables and sides were equally on par. My wife had chopped kale salad and had no complaints about it. They also had a drink special that night, with a Crispin Rose cider, which I was happy to try and not disappointed with. The food and drinks were great but it was unbearably hot. We were with a group of 5 and they had trouble seating us. The octopus was a little too burned but the salmon salad was really good. Another great experience at Barley Mac, my go-to place for really good and unique food combinations. The new-to-the-menu Black Pizza is probably the best pizza I've ever had. The crust is actually made with bits of charcoal - which gives it flavor (who would have thought) and highlights whats on top, which is incredible. My hat is off to the chef who conjured up such an incredible meal. Of course don't forget about the appetizers like the lamb and veal lagsana or the burrata. Or the short ribs! So many new things to try on the Winter Menu. Glad that it keeps getting updated with some of the oldies but goodies .. and some new creations. Disappointing. Never been to a pig roast where there wasn't a pig. Looked like pork shoulder and pork butts and didn't look too appetizing. Also never been to a pig roast where they served sliders instead of sandwiches. Very white bread. The bourbon bash part of it was three one ounce shots of Jameson which jumped up the lame factor to eleven. At a cost of $30 a head you could at least kiss me before you f*#k me. But the icing on the cake was how oversold it was and the tremendous amount of posing going on from a majority of the attendees. So glad to have left and made my way to Aslin Beer Company. read more

I came to Barley Mac with work associates for lunch. We work right around the corner and figured it had an interesting atmosphere so we wanted to give it a try. The restaurant did have a trendy design with with "one of a kind" lighting. Sadly, for the restaurant, that was really the only memorable thing. The menu seemed to be all over the place with no theme or concept. It felt as thought they were trying to appeal to everyone and in the process they appeal to no one. Probably the worst food I've had in Arlington. I regret the $200 we spent and feel badly for the birthday girl. Our waiter had an attitude. The "wagyu" meatballs were over cooked and dry and tasted like chef boyardee. Their pork chop and short rib was extremely over cooked and dry. The chicken parm was actually not bad. I would give this place 5 stars off the bat as the Juniper was amazing! We ordered wings and truffle Mac as appetizers. Both were good. The Brussels sprouts were good as well. I got the trout as my entree and it was well seasoned. I gave a 4 as my gf got the pork chops and with us being from the south we are not use to having to ask for well done chops. For pork we don't want to see pink. She said the chops were just ok and should have gone with the short ribs. read more

As my own whiskey/bourbon fanatic, I was extremely excited to try this place out. My bartender Grant was phenomenal and had the best suggestions for me on my whiskey journey. He told me about different whiskey / bourbon choices, which I had had before. So, he preceded to mention something exclusive to me. The barley Mac signature label. Apparently, something top secret and put on the market THAT day. I was super excited. So, Grant gave me a taste and I fell in love. The oak that you taste from the whiskey is a beautiful reflect of the bit of tobacco that the finish brings. Definitely something that you want to drink with a cigar handy. So all in all, I had a fantastic time and tried some great whiskey. Thanks to my bartender Grant who was great company. I will definitely be back. read more

Finally got around to coming here and I made it for Mother's Day. It was my choice and I figured with a varied menu everyone would be happy. Indeed, they were. We were seated quickly and our server was prompt with the menus. I was so happy to see cheap mimosas and I promptly ordered 2 to start with (yes, I said two :o)). Anyways, it was a comfortable environment, a sort of an industrial look and a very casual feel about the place. They have a patio open out front and I would love to go there and sit there for drinks. There would certainly be enough people watching at that point. Anyways, I broke my diet and got a burger and it was good. My sister got the brussel sprout and parfait while my dad and husband got the spinach and mushroom omelet. The only complaint I heard was at how disappointingly small the parfait was for $11. I surely agree. That parfait was small and you're better off putting that $11 for something else. Other than that we had a great time and I would return. read more

I personally like this place. They have great service and a well done indoor and outdoor space. Barley Mac is hard to miss, it's right on the Main Street and it's usually packed. If you come in for their happy house, you are most likely going to be seated in a separate section of the restaurant ( which is not a bad thing ) it's just easier for them to organize and cater to their customers. So the happy hours wait can be a little crazy so be prepared for that. They have a concise food menu and good selection of wine and cocktails. The drinks were around $6-$7 and the food approx $10. We had the fried calamari, cos we dint really like the rest of the menu. I've had better calamari certainly, but I'm not going to trash the entire food menu cos of this one dish. Overall: 4.5 Service: The service was phenomenal. We were sat promptly, our server was great and recommended several dishes and drinks, and we had no issues the duration of our meal. Food: The food was very good, we did a mixture of the wedge salad, the burger, truffle fries, and coccoli. We weren't sure what to expect with the coccoli but were pleasantly surprised, it's a unique but tasty starter, we loved the mix of sweet and savory. The wedge was also great, a unique but delicious presentation. The burger was very solid, no complaints, but the truffle fries were among my favorites, they were awesome. Drinks: We're bourbon people, so we were very excited when we sat down and started going through the drink menu, with the extensive list of scotches and bourbons. The old fashioned was perfect in terms of taste, size, and value, and they had another mixed scotch drink (I can't recall the name) which was fantastic. They have some great bourbons on the list that I'd love to get into the next time we visit. Atmosphere: We went on a Thursday night, so my only complaint is that the restaurant was incredibly loud, even from our booth. The bar area looked pretty busy. Our host actually mentioned that they were working to install some sound absorbing panels, which will definitely be a huge plus.
