My daughter came in from out of town to celebrate her birthday and we decided to meet up at Barley's Backyard for dinner and drinks. One of our party brought a cake with them for the occasion. Upon being seated nothing was said by staff about the cake which was in full view with no attempt to hide its presence. When were we're done eating as we attempted to open the cake , we were informed by staff that in order to consume cake on the premises there would be a $20 charge . Why were we not informed of this upon being seated ??? Needless to say a great time was suddenly ruined . It wasn't the $20.....Really it wasn't. It was the timing of being informed about the charge that totally ruined the moment. On top of that , our family have brought cakes to many restaurants to celebrate things over the years and this is the first time that there was ever a problem. In my experience it seems that people celebrating special occasions at an establishment will buy more drinks and stay longer. You'd think it would be good for business but apparently not for Barley's Backyard. I want to state that our server was wonderful and this was no reflection on her part. read more

I got the sirloin steak with broccoli and mash potatoes. The mash potatoes taste pre-prepared and freezer burnt. The steak is bland and not grade A quality steak. The broccoli was seasoned well but not fresh and hot. Would not recommend. read more

So very good and welcoming. Place was very busy but everyone really seemed to work as a team and enjoyed their jobs. Bartenders were pleasant and efficient as were the waitresses. Me and my friend went with the breakfast sandwiches and both were very fresh and tasty. Hashbrowns hot and seasoned really nice too. Hands down, the best kept secret of Towson. My best-friend and I stumble across this spot on our way to insomnia cookies. Let's shush say we never made it to insomnia cookies! The atmosphere convince you it's 5i clock somewhere every day no matter the hour. Our waiter Adam was amazing and he provided the best accommodations possible. Of the food we got - all off of the appetizer list for happy hour pricing - the chicken strips were great, the fried pickles were tasty, the sliders were ok and the chips and guacamole were subpar. I used to love Backyard, perfect place to go with my friends on a night out. however they got new young bouncers who think they have all of the power in the world. i've seen them deny a person because they did not like her attitude when she actually just walked up and gave them her ID. it's crazy how they pick and choose who gets in. the way they act even inside of the bar is crazy. one of them bumped into my friend one time and made her spill her drink everywhere and did not say one word to her but looked at her like it was her fault. i think the bar in general is awesome and the food is amazing, but the people there even behind the bar are genuinely just not nice people. makes me sad that people can act horrible and it just not effect them at all. if you want to have fun on a night out in Towson i suggest CnR, everyone is nice there. you also wont feel judged by over confident men. read more

Came for dinner at 7:50 pm. When the waitress handed me the bill at 9:50 pm it was on a phone and did not have an itemized receipt, only the total. I asked her if the tip was included and she said no. I tipped 20% and once I got my emailed itemized receipt I realized that the tip was actually included and I therefore tipped 40%. The check was closed out by the server at 9:50 for an auto gratuity that I was not told about beforehand because we arrived well before 9pm. Their online menu states tables of 6, those seated after 9, and checks over $100 will have an auto gratuity added (none of which applied to us). This is absolutely a college bar, which means it's no place for a 5 star meal. Their rooftop is huge and open, and so nice when they weather is warm. Bartenders and service have always been great during my experiences. Their menu has definitely improved. I personally like their ahi tuna. My brunch came out completely cold and I asked him to take it and remake it and make sure it was hot. Listen, I'm a frequenter of the restaurant since it was the "Green Turtle." What this place provides is a cool laid back atmosphere. "The Backyard" is a vibe! The food is bar favorites (huge cheese pretzel,wings,mussels) And this bomb caprese* salad: I add grilled shrimp too! The servers are pleasant polite and safe during these times. If I could, I would give this restaurant a half star or no stars. I wanted to try this restaurant since the Sun article and unfortunately it totally missed the mark. The food is awful. The shrimp Mac and cheese was gross. It tasted like cafeteria style Mac and cheese with shrimp on it. Next up were pork nachos - which our waitress did inform us were not very cheesy - which were also lacking in flavor and cheese! My first glass of wine was skunked, which they didn't charge me for but just added to the negativity. My Moscow mule was okay but nothing special. Outdoor patio is great! But not enough to bring me back. Plus there were people smoking cigars, which is gross when I am trying to eat dinner. If this place fails, it's not bc of COVID-19. What a waste. read more

A friend and I went into to barley's on a Saturday night for a happy hour on 11/13. We opened a tab @ the rooftop bar & was not informed that my card would be charged $20 holding fee. When I asked when will I receive the money back on my card I was told 24hrs, & it's been well over 72hrs & I have not gotten my money back. As well as explained to the bar tender my drinks were not filled to the top of the cup & tasted like juice I was told I had to buy a double shot if I wanted more liquor. Very bad service. No hostess and we were told to seat ourselves which we did. Then we had to track down wait staff when no one came to our table. We ordered food and it came with no silverware - we asked for it when the food was delivered but finally had to go find it ourselves. When the waitress did come back I asked about dressing for my salad (it came with none!). She said she would get it but then went to the wait on a 6 top. I finally asked for the salad to be taken off my bill since it had been at least 15 minutes since it was delivered and I was over the entire event. I ordered the mahi mahi with broccoli and mashed potatoes. My fish was way overcooked, and dry. The broccoli was fine but the mashed potatoes had basically no flavor and were very bland. The view was great and the crowd was a bit young but still nice vibe. The food was mediocre and I would have given this place 3 stars if it wasn't for our server, Mallory!
