My lunch salad with chicken was good and filling. The cookies after lunch were great and enjoyed by all. The service was very attentive and timely. I had a question about a larger group for dinner and the manager appeared, showed me their spaces and patiently answered my questions. If you're looking for a similar but alternative from fine places like Garden & Grounds Bistro on Clarkview Rd. (off the beaten path) or The Corner Pantry (too busy/noisy/cramped), both off Falls Rd--then Johnny's, further south but just outside the city on Roland is the place for weekend brunch/lunch or even dinner. Now perhaps they go a little overboard with people checking on you or upselling water preferences or bottomless mimosas (who am I to say, after all). However, their upbeat, information-sharing, food-accommodating efficiency slaps like a big city hotel fever dream! The menu is nicely sectioned into apps, lunch, brunch and sandwiches. I do wish they'd keep the coffee types in their own sections like my favorite cafés so I don't have to weed out such drivel as teas and lesser morning liquid mood enhancers. However, I was thrilled beyond belief that although it wasn't on the menu and the server didn't know what a flat white (my favorite "new" caffeine drink) was, the barista who came over did and their version was fine. Mom and I ordered an eggs Benedict and BLT--both with avocado and a side of modest mayo-y coleslaw with celery seed, a chai latte, flat white and a mimosa (other flavors exist as well). Unexpected treat: On-the-house almond pound cake (from a local bakery) with butter as a starter was SO good! Besides great food, great service and a great price for what we ordered, there are ample rooms and tables inside and out, affording minimal or no wait times and relatively medium noise to carry on a conversation. Notes: In nicer weather dining outside is great--and for special occasions, literally around the corner is Petit Louis Bistro, a Baltimore/Roland Park French food fav! Service was lackluster (2/10)- initially attentive but once orders were in, disappeared and had to be flagged down. Server also seemed very inexperienced, which is fine, except when they do unusual things like reach in front of you and so on. Food quality was OK, but not great. 6/10 maybe? Our group was also quite surprised to find tips included on the checks but the server somehow :eyeroll: forgot to mention that. Good thing someone saw it. It was easy to make a reservation and our table for 5 was ready when we arrived. Such a cute quaint restaurant in a lovely neighborhood. Our server, Violet, was exceptional. Came here for the first time last week on a Thursday night. I love the Thursday night girl dinner (salad and fries, how fun!). I think the food and drinks are a bit pricey ($17 for a cocktail, yikes!), but the atmosphere and dining experience is truly gorgeous, warm and inviting. Low lights, lush seats that are more like couches, gorgeous stone and wood all around. I enjoyed the complimentary bread, studded with dried fruit and whipped butter. The bread if it was warm would have been a bit better. I ordered the fish sandwich with fries and it was delicious - super fresh, crispy, flaky, and delicious. The fries with malbec aioli were also delicious, I would have liked even more aioli. Good portion size. Service was quick and nice. I want to come back and try their brunch and happy hour! read more

Don't bother. I have been here 6 times now. I love the location! I want to LOVE this place so badly but they make it super hard. Monday night, not crowded. Reservation for 8 people. Seated at a table for 6, with one chair added making it 7. I was early to be sure all was ready, so went back to the hostess and explained we were 8ppl. She looked at the table and asked what the problem was? I said there are 7 seats. Hostess: What would you like me to do? Me: I would like a seat for each guest. Hostess: Oh you want another place setting? Me: Yes, and a seat. I should have left then. 22 empty seats next to us, plenty of outdoor seating, and they had us crammed into a corner...expecting 8 adults to sit at a 6 top, with an added chair. Tell me you don't give a darn about our experience before it even begins. So she shoved an extra place setting on, and walks off. Me: And a chair, please. Hostess: That side is a booth, they can squish in. WTAF. I was 15 min early so I decided to order a drink. 5:45. At 6:06 I went to the bar and asked if the pink drink that had been sitting there for 10 minutes might be mine. The bartender said she was looking for lychees and when they located more she would bring it to me. We now call this the 30 minute cocktail. So everyone arrives and one of my guests is literally sitting with the corner of the table shoved in her tummy and no where to put a plate. I don't know these people very well and am so embarrassed. She says it's fine and I'm like it's absolutely not fine to not have an actual seat at the table. So up I go again and a large gentleman in a Hawaiian shirt who I assumed was the manager intercepts me and asks if all is ok? Me: I would like a seat for all 8 of us. Him: I don't understand. Me: see the woman sitting between tables removed from the group? We would like her to be included at the table. Him: let me get the hostess. Me: The hostess feels this is acceptable. Him: Well it's her job and decision. I just stood there incredulous. Hostess: what seems to be the issue...NOW? So at this point I am sure I am being filmed for a comedy skit. I giggle, look around...she starts to walk away. Me: Wait, seriously...the woman without a seat...sitting between the two tables, can we get her a seat with us. Hostess: How would you like me to do this? Are you asking to combine these two tables? Me: No we don't need 18 seats for 8 ppl. Hostess: So not sure what you want? So our party asks if we may move the table off the wall and add a chair? Hostess: Sure. Walks away. I took the seat squished in at the wall with a metal wheel in my head the whole evening. Every time the waiter interacted with me he looked at my hair in the wheel and just tried to act like it was normal. He kept losing focus, and I felt like saying...You can say what we are all thinking...WTAF!!! It makes me sad that there is so little critical thinking left in the world. I was a hostess and at 22 years old I could count to 8, and I could also see when guests were unhappy, uncomfortable or needed adjusting. They didn't even have to ask...our job was to get them seated and content before we turned them over to the waiters. But to pull this kind of BS when it's not crowded and I even took the time in the notes to ask for a round or oval table so we could all interact...like why ask guests about their needs if you don't care? "Welcome! We don't have round tables but we have a lovely table for 8 here, we hope this works for you?" Instead a table for 6 in the corner. SMH. Maybe the big guy in the Hawaiian shirt who asked me if everything was okay wasn't the manager because he just sat at the bar eating and texting for two hours, periodically answering questions. Maybe he is like the character Norm from cheers? The food has been excellent, which is why we go back. But last night it was not. The appetizer came and looked like someone ate half on the way to the table...see photos. And every single order had an issue. Like burger no tomatoes, had three tomatoes. Soup was cold...that kind of thing. We sent nothing back and didn't complain at all. Made the best of our company and rejoiced we were permitted to all sit at the same damn table, even tho we were squished and uncomfortable. (Noticed another review mentioned not being able to sit in the cozy side...I gave up on that long ago, only for locals with a bat line I guess ;-) If you walk in they tell you it's for reservations. We were hankering some really good seafood. Started with their shrimp ceviche, always a fan fave. Love their tortilla chips and the jicama is a nice touch. Always fresh. For dinner we each did seafood entrees, I had the grilled swordfish tostadas. Omg, so delicious. It comes on a bed of delicious black beans that were so flavorful. The swordfish was really flaky and poblano slaw nice and crunchy and fresh. My work colleague had the pan seared salmon with zucchini noodles and gochujang cream. That dish was delicious too. My colleague preferred my dish because she favors for tangy and citrusy flavors. Me personally both of these dishes met the mark and I would definitely get them again. Our server Glenn was really nice and attentive, also suggested great wine parings as well. The cookie of the month was the creamsicle cookie. It was not too bad, not too sweet. The peanut butter cookie is always my fave here, hands down. Overall, you cannot go wrong with Johnny's , whether you dine in for lunch, dinner or brunch. It's just that good. We came in with a group of five and specifically asked to sit at a table in the sun on the patio since it was a beautiful 65-degree day. The patio itself was about 75% empty, so it didn't seem like an unreasonable request. However, we were told that the section we wanted was "closed" -- despite there being no signs, barriers, or anything indicating that it wasn't available. What made it more frustrating is that the table we asked for was actually closer to the door, which would have made things easier for the server, not harder. We politely asked if they could accommodate us, but there was zero flexibility or willingness to work with us. As a result, they lost our entire group of five paying customers. It just felt unnecessarily rigid and not very customer-friendly. On a slow patio with plenty of open seating, a little accommodation would have gone a long way. read more

Can get a bit louder at times. our server was attentive considering the size of our group and made great recommendations.loved my garden cocktail with gin and cucumber. The complimentary bread had this delicious almond-y flavor. I had a crab bisque that tasted mainly of old bay and was a bit overpriced for the size received but I did enjoy it nonetheless. Great restaurant and good food. However, I would agree with a recent review that the beer selection leaves much to be desired. We are regular customers at Johnny's but are always disappointed by the beer selection. You do not have any local beers which is very surprising give your support of local sourcing. There are much better local IPAs than Lagunas from California and local larger instead of the two from Mexico. I do not drink sour beer so the one from Cambridge does not count but it is good to see. Also, my friend is always complaining that you do not have any dark beers. The addition of a dark beer and local choices would greatly enhance our experience at Johnny's. I am sure you can find one to reflect your Mexico and California focus. However the food is generally sourced locally so why not at least one or 2 local IPAs. read more

sadly wasn't that impressed with my recent visit to johnnys. got there at 620 for a 630 reservation on a saturday night. seated closer to 645 and there were many other parties waiting for their tables too. within 1 min a server brought over food that we had not ordered. you do not have one assigned server, so i felt there was somewhat of a disconnect in communication throughout the night. the tempura cauliflower lacked presentation entirely. the shrimp tacos were good but could not even be eaten as tacos because the tortillas were sopping wet and broke immediately when picked up. the fish and chips were tasty. nice that they make everything in house (sauces and all). the mocha cookie was a highlight for sure. the restaurant has a dark, low-ceiling, cozy vibe. it can get very loud when it's crowded. there is limited parking at the restaurant itself but there is nearby street parking too. i would come back but i hope my next experience is a bit better! read more

Thanksgiving self-service dinner was sub-par. Presentation was poor. Food was not hot, cold when it reached the table. Turkey, stuffing, and sweet potato offerings were tasteless. Came back to Johnys with the family. It was restaurant week and my wife got the restaurant week menu. Peach salad appetizer, bronzino entree and peach cobbler dessert. I had the burger with the bacon and egg, one kid had the fried chicken sandwich and the other two had kids buttered pasta with fries. The burger is very good, as always. Ask for extra old bay aioli which adds to deliciousness. The fries are always good. The peach salad was very good. The bronzino was good but didn't blow me away and the peach cobbler was okay but not great. Johnys continues to be a reliable place and if you go early enough the food comes out quickly. read more

This is the fourth time we have eaten at Johnny's. This is the first time we have been less than impressed. The waitress didn't seem like she wanted to be there. She didn't tell us her name, she didn't tell us the specials, she didn't offer dessert. When the manager came around and asked us how everything was, our server was standing about 10 feet behind her, looking at us and listening to the interaction with the manager. We did not feel comfortable saying anything with her lurking in the background. Perhaps our server thought our table wasn't worth the effort having two young (but well behaved) children with us. Then we overheard her responding to another guest asking a question about an item on the menu. The server's response was "there's a description right there on the menu". It seemed curt and bothered. So I doubt my children were the discriminating factor. She's just not a warm customer service oriented person. The food was good. We had a burger and the chicken thigh sandwich and two meals from the kids menu. The ketchup cup and aioli cup had a crust on the top like they had been pre made and sat uncovered for an extended period of time. So that was gross especially when children are asking for ketchup. Also, if you order soda, it's canned, so be prepared to pay $4.00 per can! The ambience is visually appealing, however we were sat near the coffee station and our server was grinding beans which was very loud and distracting as well as cleaning the station. Overall I'd say it's more of an upscale cafeteria vibe than a place you can go and enjoy a quiet dinner with family. It will do in a pinch, but probably not the first place we'd choose again. read more

Finally made my way over to Johnny's last week for Happy Hour. It was a Friday evening around 5:00pm and the place was packed! When you enter, you'll see the host stand in front of you, a bright airy bar to the right, and a darker moody bar with lots of booths to the left. There's free parking in the lot in front but it can get full pretty quickly. On this particular day, the bar on the right was completely full. I asked the hostess if I could sit at the bar on the left (the dark and moody one) and she said it wasn't going to be open until 5:30pm. I thought this was a little odd since there were clearly people sitting at that bar. She said she'd grab me a table to which I replied "I'm only here for drinks and don't want to take up a table for someone who may want to dine-in." After all, part of the fun of a Happy Hour is sitting at a bar with fellow patrons and chatting it up with the bartender, right? Before she could respond, she turned around and answered the phone. While she was on the phone, a server walked past and asked if I had been helped yet. I let him know I was just there for drinks and wanted a seat at the bar. And he said, "oh! There's seat over at the bar to the left"... strange since the hostess just said that bar was closed until 5:30pm. Nonetheless, I took him up on his offer and grabbed a stool at the dark and moody bar. The bartender was very attentive and gave me plenty of recommendations. I was feeling super indecisive but finally landed on their version of a French 75 which was served with fennel. It was super citrusy, refreshing, and delicious. The bar snack of the night was three fried oysters for $5 - not a bad deal! I didn't order any for myself but the folks next to me did and they seemed to enjoy them. Overall, I would return to this spot again for Happy Hour and some small bites to eat. The neighborhood is super cute too and I love walking up Roland Avenue to look at the gorgeous victorian homes. Great spot for a casual lunch with a friend. I had a Caesar salad with shrimp. It was delicious, however I thought that $9 for 3 large shrimp (not jumbo) was a bit much, but also I expect a higher price at a Foreman property because I do expect perfection.
