Ummmm...DELICIOUS! I had been craving a cobb salad for about 7 weeks (ok random, yes) and the one at Barnaby's is incredible and totally hit the spot. My friend got the egg salad sandwich and french fries...also incredible. And then we had a chocolate chip cookie...the chocolate was still gooey... oh i think i need to go back now! Also, the service was awesome. Our waitress was adorable and very nice and I don't think my cup was ever empty :) A+ to these people. I've visited this Barnaby's about three times, and have found it very uneven. In terms of cleanliness and service it has always done well, but the food usually left something to be desired. I do always get the blue cheese fondue waffle fries. So delicious, and the hunks of bacon in it just make it all the more better. It's always too much food, but I get it anyway! A lot of people tout the burgers here but I can't say I've liked the ones I've tried. I've had the green chile burger and the chicken la jolla, both of which feature a slab of green chile that reminds me of a wet hunk of green pepper flavored tongue. The French dip is acceptable, but not something that would make me go to Barnaby's to get it. The best thing I've had, entree-wise, is the meat lasagna. It was actually quite spectacular, heavy on the meat and cheese and the sauce on top was sweet with real tomatoes and ridiculously well seasoned. It's also huge, and was good for two meals or easily shareable. So if you go, I'd recommend getting that. Anywho, I tend to go here when I have friends whose food preferences I do not know, because it's a very clean, casual place and they can share my blue cheese fries with me. read more

Barnaby's Cafe has been on my Houston bucket list for quite some time now and, with it being on my favorite strip of Fairview, I was bound to hit it sooner rather than later. As Danielle S. aptly put it, exploring this section of Fairview is like being transported to an area that is unlike Houston. My wife and I stumbled upon Barnaby's Cafe after spending the last few hours getting boxes for our move out of our apartment. What we needed was something healthy yet tasty, and a good beer to wash it down. We lumbered up to Barnaby's Cafe around 3:00 in the afternoon, and were promptly greeted when we walked in. Despite noone on the patio, we asked if it was ok if we sat out there. The host didn't seem to mind, so we mosey'd on out and grabbed a table for two. Lucky for us, we had a fantastic server, who was attentive, but not annoyingly so. She even picked up on the fact that we were splitting our meal and brought us plates. Shucks, that's just plain sweet. We started out the lunch + dinner = linner with a couple of cold ones. For me, a St. Arnold's Lawnmower, for her, a Real Ale something something. By this point, both of us were starving, so we got in our order quickly: pesto chicken salad sandwich and a california-type of salad. The real star of this show was the pesto chicken. It was creamy and tangy. The bread balanced it nicely, being toasted and firm without being overly crumbly. The salad was pretty good, and didn't need much dressing due to the sour cream and the avocado spread. It was good, but not something I would characterize as a "healthy" salad. I hope I can return to Barnaby's Cafe soon so I can get the french fries and the burger. I used to not care for Barnaby's. Actually, I just had something against paying $8 for a sandwich. I recently visited again and wondered why I ever doubted their $8 sandwiches. The egg salad is just amazing, and the Artichoke Pesto Chicken Salad....yum!! I never would have thought that pesto-chicken + mayo would equal yummy goodness, but it does. Grab a side of fries rather than the chips, they are worth the additional calories! My husband ordered the meatloaf and I was impressed with the size of it! It's a huge slab of loaf covered with a stewed-tomato sauce. Although it was good, I much prefer my meatloaf to be topped only with some baked-on-crusty-ketchup. The tomatoes made it taste too "Italian" and ruined the meatloaf aspect. The accompanying mashed potatoes were delish, though. And you can't really beat $11 for a plate of food that will feed a man for a couple of days. Parking can be a pain, that's the only downside I have with Barnaby's now that I've rediscovered the sandwiches. read more

I love this place. Awesome atmosphere, great people eating here and working here. Our server, Cuba, was extremely outgoing, funny and nice. She was helpful with options and even brought out extra sauces for the fries because she thought we just might like them. She told me "Don't worry about what it says on the menu, we can pretty much do anything." Well- alright! I was able to order my salad the way I wanted it and my husband devoured his burger. The servings were HUGE! I didn't take mine to go because salad doesn't keep well, but now I know for the future. I just love restaurants that are inside of houses. It's creative and cozy. The lighting was perfect, the colorfulness was fun and all of the servers were just really great. We had a couple of different people in our section come by and chat with us and I loved that too. I love me some Barnabys! This really is just such a great restaurant in a fantastic fun neighborhood (mine.. duh!) There really is something for everyone at Barnaby's. They are AMAZING salads.. great yummy sandwiches, KILLER burgers, ridiculous french fries and sweet potato fries, great entrees, and some of the best deserts around. Here are some of my fab recommendations: Lebanese Chicken Fattoush Salad, Chicken La Jolla, Spinach and Mushroom Burger (w/ turkey patty and sweet potato fries!), the Ahi Burger, for the vegetarians- The Falafel Burger is so good! I like the salmon as well, and the meatloaf is very popular! Dont skip a chocolate chip cookie, carrot cake, or red velvet for desert. You wont regret it! They also have really good coffee! Given this is a tiny place, and it can get crowded. But its worth it! The staff is amazing and always so friendly and accommodating. No wonder I am there 3 times a week or so! read more

I have their Cobb salad about twice a month which is more like six times since the salad is so large that I can make three meals out of it... I also love their turkey sandwich with cranberry mayonnaise, which is odd because I do like lunch meat or mayo, but wow that thing is good!! They also have some super juicy giant burgers and heavenly cobbler topped with vanilla ice cream... It's also surprisingly kid friendly.... I got a Hickory BBQ burger and sweet potato fries to share with a friend before a show. Oh man. The burger was juicy and had an awesome amount of BBQ sauce on it. It was juicy and saucy to the point where your hands are filthy with the stuff and you run out of napkins, but it is oh so good and worth it. And I raise my hand to some higher being out there that these sweet potato fries were the ones that got me obsessed with sweet potato fries. Sweet potato perfection! Crispy and mightily tasty. As diners go, Barnaby's leaves me with mixed opinions. I found the whole "dead dog" theme a bit creepy and overwhelming. Every square inch of surface area is covered in homages to the owner's dear deceased sheep dog, who is now presumably looking over the restaurant from doggy heaven. The walls and ceilings are painted with dog bowls, dog houses, collars, fire hydrants, and even squirrels - all with angel wings and halos. Interesting interior decorating decision. On the other hand, the food and service were both pretty good. Everyone at my table really liked the waffle fries with blue cheese fondue, bacon, and chives. We devoured it in a matter of seconds. I was also happy with my meatloaf bruschetta sandwich (the tomato wedges were a great addition). The kettle chips were soggy and disappointing though. In summary, if you can overlook the All Dogs Go To Heaven motif, then Barnaby's is a pretty decent place for lunch. Just don't try going to the bathroom, because its about the size of a doghouse. read more

Sandwiches are great-- a few ticks shy of superb. Simple, high quality meat and lettuce, good (but not great) bread, all the basics, plus homemade chips. Homey atmosphere, great when not crowded, a bit insane when packed. Parking is all in the street (or at least the tiny parking lot was full as far as we could tell). Would love this place but their main problem is they're next door to their own Baby Barnaby's, which is supposedly even more kick-butt, and that makes a solid place stand out a little less than it should. 3.5 stars. GET THE SWEET POTATO FRIES. they're AMAZING. with their chipotle bbq. and the portions are HUGE. you definitely get your money's worth here. my favorite thing by far is the meat loaf. it comes with mashed potatoes and steamed veggies. but i usually sub the veggies for sweet potato fries :) recently, i tried the hawaiian pork chops. which i thought were kind of overcooked. i was rly disappointed bc i generally like everything i've tried from there. but i was too hungry to complain and wait for them to cook another pork chop. a few bites into my meal, the waiter brought out another plate of pork chops and said the cook felt he didn't cook the first porkchops right and wanted to give these new ones instead. I went to Barnaby's on Fairview today for the first time today and was super excited to try the food only to be completely disappointed by the hostess who decided to have a political conversation loudly with another guest. Everyone is entitled to their own political views. This is America, but for her to say something along the lines of some of the people who were upset about Trump's victory in the most presidential election were probably "friends with immigrants". I was so disgusted by the insensitivity, I paid for my drinks and cancelled my food order. I will not return to Barnaby's after this experience. I love Barnaby's! My husband also loves it-he is never there in person rather he excitedly awaits my leftovers. I love the clubhouse sandwich with half sweet potato fries and half regular. I eat half the sandwich and the sweet potato fries-I take the other half and regular fries home. The staff make me the most happy! They are funny, kind, make you feel like they know you, and diverse both in who is working and in personality. I used to come here a lot, back in the day (10+ years ago), Used to come here all the time, it was my number 1 food stop for anyone, in town, or even special treat or event.. I've been coming back off and on, and lately, the quality of food always seems dry.. the ribs, the meatloaf, the chicken, etc.. All dry, and not as tasty as it used to be. Still great portions of food though.. Enough for 2 meals.. Leftovers are the bomb! Although, I think the burgers have stayed rather consistent, and still good.. The french fries are fantastic! I have enjoyed the food here as well as the other locations around town. The food is delicious and the service is top notch. I was working the late shift tonight and decided to call in an order. I ordered the pesto- chicken salad sandwich with a side salad. I also ordered a bowl of chili (which is only available on Fridays) to snack on during my shift. The sandwich was quite simple. Fresh vegetables, home made pesto infused chicken salad, between two toasted slices of wheat bread and a crunchy pickle spear on the side ended up being a great choice. The side salad with in house made dressing was right on par with the sandwich. What bumped this place up to a 5 star was the service. The staff greeted me as i walked in was super friendly. After getting back to the office i noticed that they had forgotten my chili. I called up to see if there was a mistake or if it was never put in with the order. The wait staff apologized and asked if I would come back so they could correct the mistake. Since the office was close by I swung back over and the rest of my order was waiting for me. They also threw in a couple of cookies for my troubles. Fresh food and great service is what this place has and I will be back. read more

Definitely come with an appetite because the portions are huge...well they are for me! As I walked in, I was greeted by a happy go lucky server decked out in Christmas light decor. This is definitely going to be an interesting dining experience! Everything on the menu looked so appealing, but considering I just ate not too long before I headed over to Barnaby's, I didn't want to over do it. So I ordered a bowl of soup, which was supposed to be chicken tortilla, but came out as broccoli cheddar instead, and a crunchy chicken salad. Despite the fact that my soup of the day was wrong, it was still very delicious especially on a cold night. The salad even though was a small/half salad was huge! I would have mistaken it for the entree sized salad if I wasn't told to order the small order. I so wanted to try some of the desserts, but I couldn't even manage to finish my food. Our server was very attentive the entire time and when it came time to split the bill there was no problem. So next time, I'll come with an empty stomach ready to eat! read more

I goggled best turkey burgers in Houston and Barnaby's Cafe came in at number 7. I've always wanted to try baby Barnaby's cafe brunch and haven't had the time to actually wait! Today I came specifically for the turkey burger and I am very pleased!! I was greeted by friendly staff, everyone was so friendly and seemed like they love their job and enjoy serving customers (very pleased) the atmosphere is very laid back, causal and clean. Back to my turkey burger it was so fresh, juicy and was seasoned just right. I see why this place was listed in the top 10 places to go a turkey burger. The dessert looked delicious but I didn't have any room for dessert. BUT when I was leaving he gave me a cookie to take home!! I went to Barnaby's with a couple of friends on a Wednesday night. Like most places in Montrose we had to park about a block away and walk over. The tiny little wooden building looks bland from the outside, but inside it is crowded but comfortable, with friendly waitstaff. I have been on a chicken kick lately, so I ordered the grilled chicken sandwich, hold the tomatoes. The sandwich came with honey mustard on it, and I wasn't sure how much I was going to like it. At first I wasn't a huge fan (I stick to mayo with grilled chicken sandwiches) but it was actually pretty good and I'm glad I went with it. The portions are huge! The french fries are of the slender variety, nicely seasoned but bordering on the edge of too much seasoning. I also got their iced tea, but wasn't really impressed with it, it was merely average. I will definitely be coming here again, whenever I am next on this side of town. read more

I'm going to start out by saying that the night I went to Barnaby's Cafe wasn't a good one -- I was having a fight and I'm sure our waiter was amused/fed up with our brusque treatment of him every time he came over to ask if we were okay. But I will also say that the waiter was very attentive, and really did want to make sure that everything was great for us! I'll have to agree with everyone else's reviews that say there's huge portions, which is great. Love having leftovers. Also, I love that their food seems to be somewhat healthier than what I've seen in other restaurants in Houston (not a big shocker -- what are we, the 2nd fattest city in the US?). I got the salmon with rice, and there was so much salmon, rice and broccoli that I immediately knew there was no way I was going to finish it. I loved the rice -- but the broccoli was too big -- wish they would've cut it until smaller pieces. I love broccoli, but when it's bigger than my my head, I can't really eat it. Also, the salmon smelled really fishy. Okay, I know I'm going to get some smart ass telling me that's what fish are supposed to smell like. Yes, I know that. But when a fish is cleaned property and cooked, there shouldn't be this incredibly fishy odor that accompanies it like this dish did. So I can't give Barnaby's Cafe as many props as I'd like to. So are the salads, but kinda hard to know what they are since the menus dont have descriptions. However, the staff is always more than happy to answer my millions of questions. Wonderful and funky atmosphere. The food is divine and well cooked. Keep Montrose Gay!!! Had the best waiter when I was there. The service was spot on. The decor is darker and intimate while also being very comfortable as well. I love the pictures of dogs all around the dining area. Although, they almost lost the pug picture as I was tempted to take it with me. What can I say, my waiter was as gay as they come and just wonderful. I would recommend this place to anyone who is comfortable around us gay folk. I had a divine Buffalo burger that was perfectly cooked and very flavorful. This was a place, ironically enough, my girlfriend found on Yelp to begin with. We're in town for a wedding so we wanted to pick some place close to the hotel. We both had two different takes on the original hamburger - she had the turkey burger and I had their free range buffalo burger. However, in order to jazz up her turkey burger, my girlfriend added guacamole, pepper jack cheese and pico de gallo. Her burger was so large (the waiter said the average weight is 1/2 pound) she was unable to finish it! The bison burger is a little smaller (about 7 ounces) but it was very juicy and filling, even if it wasn't actually half a pound. Both burgers come with fries, but we substituted for waffle fries instead. The fries were crisp and seasoned well! The server, Dean, was very friendly and hospitable. Even though we don't live in Houston, I definitely recommend this restaurant to any of my friends on Yelp in the Bayou City! read more

On a Saturday morning, my friend & I wanted to go to The Breakfast Klub first, but the line wrapped zigzag on their lot, and we didn't want to wait in what seemed like would've been at least a 2-hour wait. We drove over to Barnaby, and the wait was more manageable, about 30 minutes. Once seated, I ordered an orange juice & Annie's low-fat, hight-protein burrito. The juice was freshly squeezed, very sweet, but contained seeds. I would've liked it if they strained out the seeds before bringing it over. The burrito was six egg whites, grilled chicken, & black beans wrapped in a whole wheat tortilla, served with salsa, guacamole, and sliced tomatoes. The food was a big portion, but we couldn't take of it home. My friend tried the green eggs plate with sausage, and enjoyed it. $14 for lunch is a great price! read more
