Barnacle Bill's is definitely one of my favorite spots in Tawas. We were visiting for Labor Day weekend and met up with some friends who happened to be in the same town for vacation weekend. Went around 9:40PM asked if they could serve a group of 7 food. They said yes if we ordered in the next 15 mins. We order drinks (round of waters and one beer) then placed food 5 minutes later. We never were ID as a group, at the door or at the table (other than the one beer). One of us run out to the car to grab a sweatshirt and when we returned (9:57PM) we were yelled at and hounded for our ID, we said we were 21 and that we just ordered food then was yelled at some more. Once we returned to the table our server comes back and asks if we are 21, 3 of us said no, she then aggressively told us we need to eat and soon and leave immediately after. Which was frustrating as we were never told before ordering that this was a 21+ (we are not from the area). We then got our food and was never seen again by our server. We were waiting for the bill to be delivered and it never came, letting us sit there for another 25 minutes. I then overheard the bartender yelling across the bar to the bouncer (who got there around 10:35) that we were "a table full of minors who needed to leave" when we haven't even gotten our bill. The bouncer came over to the table and asked if we were under 21 and if we are we have to leave. He was very polite and helped us with our situation and told us we probably need to go to the bar to cash out. The server comes back and gives us our bill all on one tab (we told her we were all separate at the beginning and she said it was okay). We went up to the bar and met a man (I'm assuming a manager) he then helped us separate the tabs and let us check out. We were finally able to leave at 10:45PM. The two women who were our server and the bartender were ridiculously rude, unfriendly and I definitely do not want to come back here. I do not recommend. read more

Nothing to go out of the way for. We stopped in for dinner, it was okay. Pretty pricey for what it was. The menu is nondescript, making choosing a little harder to do. I got the baked pasta, which was half cheese. The pasta was okay. It came with a baked potato and salad which were both good. My friends got chicken strips, a reuben sandwich and a burger and thought their food was also okay but not great. The service was okay. My meal was basically all wrong. Ordered ahi tuna bites dinner Asked for rare and barely brazed. They were black hard pellets and as well done as possible. Baked beans were pathetic. Straight out of a can with some sugar added; horrible. I suggested to the waitress that the kitchen might consider molasses to improve but was met with absolute opposition since NO-ONE can suggest anything to the kitchen! Closed case! The meal was not good nor was it what I had ordered. Lesson learned for me. Drink only at Barnacle Bills. Sorry folks, but it was money poorly spent! read more

Been coming to East Tawas a few times a year for a few years now, and if you want a solid place for food and drink, this is a good choice. I've been here for just drinks, dinner and brunch now. They have a good variety of items to pick from. Breakfast has good omelettes, bowls, individual items to choose from. We had the farmers omlette, it was great. The sausage links are good too. I would recommend asking for the hash browns to be a little more well done, ours were undercooked slightly. For dinner the ahi tuna bites are really good. Also, the fried mushrooms are a must! The fried perch was cooked perfectly and decently priced. They have all u can eat fish on Fridays too! The ambience is nice for a bar during meal time. It can get crowded and loud at night when the bar crowd is here. Service is good, all the waitstaff is friendly and efficient. read more

Even for a sports bar, it was just LOUD...and it was not even loud for the Michigan game. We ordered the munchies basket to start with and the the wife ordered tbe patty melt and I ordered the cod. The food was overly greasy, no salt on anything, and some, like my cod, was overcooked. Would not recommend and would return too. read more

Scrambled eggs with tomatoes and onions topped with pesto sauce with six slices of tomato laid over the top and sourdough toast. Not only was it healthy, it tasted super!. We stopped in for breakfast during a vacation trip. The service was so nice. Ladies were very accommodating. The location is convenient as it's on the main drag. We came on a summer Monday evening. We sat outside with our dog. They have a water bowl available for dogs. The waiter was very accommodating moving things around and not stepping on or even never the dog which was very nice. There were daily special. I ordered the roast beef sandwich with mashed potatoes which was tasty. My husband ordered the hard tacos. He needed to go inside the restaurant for all the extra fixings. We will return. Above average tourist lunch and dinner spot. We ate here for dinner on a Monday night without a reservation and no wait. I'm guessing it gets crowded on weekends in the summer. The best part of our experience was the drinks. Surprisingly great variety, the mixed drinks were generous and they had more than just run of the mill well booze. The food was good, blackened tuna was a little over-cooked, but flavorful and good size portions. I had the brisket sandwich and it was above average. The onion rings were great though. Plenty of seating for large groups and they have TVs and shuffleboard for the kids. It's a good location downtown, walking distance to the parking, marina and ice cream shops. Would definitely eat here again if I had the chance. read more

In May of this year we visited the Tawas area and had take out from here and we enjoyed it immensely. Today, September 24, we decided that since we had such a great experience in May we would try it again. Such a disappointment!!! The corn bread was burned, not just dark but literally burnt to black. The onion rings lost most of the breading, the baked beans were nothing more than canned pork and beans and the hand battered mushrooms were soggy. So very disappointing especially for the cost. Great place and great location. The drinks are strong, the food good, and the staff are pleasant. They are open late and bar tenders close when they want to. It's best to go during the weekday as the weekends can be quite crowded. Bar tenders make drinks like it's a big city and get quite creative. Great up north Michigan feeling / vibe. We sat outside which is on Newmann St as the inside is pretty dark and it was a gorgeous day in Tawas. It did take a few minutes to get our water and the menus and maybe a touch longer than we wanted to wait to order but the wait for the food didn't take obnoxiously long. I had the Reuben and fries pictured below. It was good. I would tell you there is a way to make sure the bread doesn't get soggy when building a Reuben and they may not have that down with precision but it was good. My fiancé's burger was good and the onion rings were super good. Our only tip would be to be sure to specify what you would like on your burger when ordering as they didn't ask and the pic below was delivered. The server quickly brought toppings, but it was a bit dry looking. Just remember they are a bar and it is bar food. And they don't accept Amex or Discover. We have a house in town and have been here many times. Generally busy but only for lack of any other options. This town desperately need someone who knows what they are doing with food and beverage. Dirty! Needs updating and customer service training although the staff is generally a good group of hustlers. Any app is a frozen bagged item. Menu is far too large to do anything very well. Burger came as seen in pic with that amount of fries. Asked owner for more and he said he was worried about waste but did get me more. Nachos have squeeze cheese. Cocktails are expensive for the quality. Nightlife is decent, but again for lack of any better options. No consistency here. This town is beautiful! Someone please save it with a clean place with some decent service, food and drinks!! It would be an instant success. read more
