It pains me to leave a mere two-star review but I couldn't find much to like here. The quaint ambience, friendly service (we were one of the first guests to arrive on a Friday morning mid-May) and fresh brewed decaf were the highlights. The food, which is most important, was a big disappointment. I am a cinnamon roll connoisseur and was so excited to try the rolls that past Yelpers raved about. They were out of caramel today so we ordered the grilled roll with pecans and homemade buttercream frosting. It looked dry and tasted even drier. Barely warm, flourey and tasteless. The frosting was the best part. The menu of choices looks wonderful and diverse for a small cafe. I was delighted to see shrimp and grits. The skillet was very small, the food was hot (a plus) but it was heavy on the grits, which lacked flavor and space on shrimp (only 4), sausage and sauce. I ate the toppings with half the grits and left the rest. My husband ordered the hoagie sandwich with hash browns. His comment was "a lot of bread and minimal filling" with "luke warm" hash browns that were more spongy than crispy. It's hard to go wrong with breakfast, but somehow Lazy Toaster has missed the mark. The concept is fun, the menu is great, yet the recipes and preparation could use some major improvements. The tab ($41 for two) was not bad, but was high for the quality. We liked the decor yet felt the cleanliness was lacking (sticky floors and no paper towels in the bathroom). A breakfast place in East Tawas is a plus; I hope this cafe commits to some improvements and stays around. read more

Excellent breakfast joint located on Newman St in Downtown Tawas. For my first meal here I ended up getting a made to order ommelett that well made with excellent taste and with generous amounts of my chosen fresh ingredients on the inside. Accompanying hash browns were equally well made and tasty where just the right amount of grease/butter was used to make my food (no greasy food here!). This all too often is an issue you see with these small breakfast centric restaurants up north that I was so pleased not to see here at the Lazy Toaster. Relative to the restaurant and staff, Lazy Toaster has a nice comfortable rustic "Up north" feel to it which I enjoyed where the staff was super friendly with great follow up throughout the meal and and where they are definately on top of their game when it comes to Coffee top-offs. Nice! Overall, this is definately one of the better breakfast spots in the greater Tawas/Oscoda/Harrisville area and is now on my short list of go to restaurants in the area. read more

This is a cute little breakfast place and I'm so glad it's here. My friends ordered the Panini breakfast and I ordered just eggs and toast. The service is good and the food quality is good. Probably the only complaint is that the hashbrowns aren't brown enough, but that's my particular taste. On busy days, I recommend getting there before 9 o'clock, it gets pretty busy and it's small so the weight can be a little bit long. I wish they had a few more healthy options. I like avocado toast but there's is lacking. It's just a piece of toast with some avocado spread on top, no seasoning, very bland. Also kind of small. read more

This is a solid go to place from breakfast or lunch in Tawas. Clean, nice dining room. Service is always good here, fast and food is hot. They have a nice menu here, some traditional items and some nice new choices. You can get many breakfast items served as an omelette, bowl or wrap. They have several options with avocado. I was disappointed to see the Whitetail Cafe go away but the Lazy Toaster is great. Had one walleye Benedict and one bacon Benedict. They were excellent. Sausage links were really good too as was the coffee. Service was ok. They were out of a couple things which was a disappointment. Definitely has a diner vibe but food is more upscale. Great food with VERY friendly service. The atmosphere is comfort and homey with classic rock playing in the background. For lunch, the Shrimp Chowder with potato and plenty of bacon didn't leave me looking for goodness in the broth. The Cajun Shrimp Penini is lightly spicy with tomato, cheese, and a sauce that's delicious. The bread they use for their penini is fresh and delicious. The BLT Penini cones with plenty of bacon, mixed greens, tomato, cheese and mayo. Delicious! Onion rings were perfect as were the sweet potato fries. This was our first visit. If our food today is anything like the rest of the menu it'll be well prepared, delicious, and satisfying. read more

We're not from the area and we needed some breakfast (that wasn't at a hotel), so we looked at restaurants in the area around where we stayed. There were a couple of restaurants that popped up and then when I read the name "The Lazy Toaster", I knew that was the one! The ambiance inside gave me the same feeling of warmth and cuteness that I felt when I heard the name. The staff is welcoming and friendly. We chose seats at the bar and Jolene told us, "The only rule if you sit here, is you have to have to entertain us and you have to color a toaster" and pointed to the wall where there were about 50 posted sheets of coloring papers of the mascot--The Lazy Toaster! So cute! We started with a cup of coffee. It's ground fresh right in Tawas at one of the owner's other locations. It's so smooth! Jolene recommended the Bacado omelet. It has bacon, avocado, and Monterrey Jack cheese and is topped with fresh pico and a side of sour cream. The flavors blended so well, it was like heaven in my mouth. Hubs got the biscuits and gravy and he said it was one of the best things he's ever had. Our server, Sarah, was extremely friendly and super attentive; even when hubby got into talking about UTV's with Zachary. She made sure we had everything we needed before we started and kept our delicious coffees topped off. It was so good we ended up purchasing a pound and grabbing a to-go cup. We LOVE to support local businesses and this was the perfect spot. And to think--it all started with the cute name. We'll be back for sure!! They're opening another restaurant on the bay in April, so we'll be planning a weekend up in Tawas (4 hrs away from our home) soon! read more

If you are in Tawas you need to set aside a day for a breakfast at the LT. It's a small place like most of the good diners around Michigan but the food was spectacular. The Grits are Fire! Extremely slow service. We sat for 45 minutes after waiting 20 Minutes for a table and our order never arrived. Low and behold, the waitress never put it in!!!! Menu looks interesting but unfortunate we didn't get the to taste anything. So much for the lazy toaster. Won't be back ! read more

Three breakfasts this morning, all good except for the Chicken Fried Steak and eggs. Gravy was way too salty, and tasted like cream soup and the thin meat patty was limp, not crisp. The hamburger was fine and the iced tea was so peak could not really taste it. Overall, decent food and good service. read more

Finally made it there today! Heavy breakfast type menu, all looked delicious! We went with the Shrimp and Grits. It was very tasty! The grits were amazingly creamy, albeit almost too cheesy but really good! The combination of the andouille sausage and Cajun spiced shrimp had a nice spice but not too spicy. I visit East Tawas often and was looking forward to this new restaurant opening. Stopped in for breakfast and was not disappointed. I had the Vanilla Bean Pancakes, and I think they may be the best pancakes I've ever had. They were thick, fluffy, and so flavorful. Busy breakfast place for good reason. The bacado omelette was awesome, tons of crispy bacon and avocado. The waffles are great and you can get a 2nd waffle for $1 more. These are full size Belgian waffles. My husband got a skillet with perfect poached eggs. Only complaint is the waffles were done way before the rest of the food but they weren't brought to the table so they were cold by the time we received them. Visiting Tawas and stopped here for lunch. Friendly waitress let us sit wherever. The menu has a lot of different items for varying tastes. I had the chicken fried steak and home fries(cut up potato about 1" size) wife had an omelette. The menu was kitschy and fun I almost went for the crepes. The steak was a small portion but filling, the potatoes were crisp on the outside and fluffy inside the gravy was a sausage gravy, almost exactly like I make at home, enough pepper you can taste it with a flavor to the gravy from the sausage and not bland at all. Last minute had a cinnamon roll with pecans (it was covered in them) and caramel sauce (lots) it was about 5" across. Going back tomorrow for breakfast. read more

Wanted to try this new restaurant. I had the lumberman skillet. It was very good. The staff was very friendly too. My only issue is the menu seems to be misleading or they are simply shorting people on food. The menue clearly state that all skillets come with toast AND american fries or hash browns. When the skillet showed up, I only had toast with it. When I asked about the fries or hash browns I was told I could substitute the mashed potatoes in the skillet with one of them. That is not what the menu says. I probably won't be back. Many other restaurants in the area that serve more food for the same price. read more

We received our food, hash browns we barely cooked, most restaurants you get 2 pieces of toast, here you get 1 and the toast I got was on the burnt The worse part was they charge 3.65 for a pop.... Food was sub par and prices for what you get are ridiculous high. read more
