I don't even know where to start to be honest. The treatment we received from the moment we walked in was a completely disappointing and infuriating. We walked in and had to wait 10 minutes before someone even greeted us. Sat down and the my seemed on edge and annoyed that we were there with our kids at the table although we were the first table at opening. We chose a early dinner time 5pm. Then they came and told us that this was a fine dining experience. Hello. I know what a fine dining experience is. I lived in manhattan NY for 5 years, Dubai for 7, Italy for 6 years and Boston for the past year. Guess what, your restaurant is the least fine dining I was going to experience in my life. The tone and the way it was handled suggested discrimination at it's finest. When we tried to leave, there was a sense of relief on their end and As I was in my car loading my kids back in, a teenager walked up and offered for us to go into a tavern. I was like absolutely No. thank you. After the treatment that we received, you expect me to join you in the Tavern? What the hell are you thinking. This is the difference between a local Mom and shop place with zero education on how to handle customer vs. a true fine dining experience in NY downtown Boston or any other place for that matter. They kept talking to me about $$ which I didn't care about. If you had known, my family and myself are vacationing in Woodstock at the Woodstock Inn, and I am a Real Estate Executive with the largest real estate Operation in Boston. It's okay. If I didn't have a family vacation house 2 miles away from The Barnard Inn, I'd travel at least twice a year from Boston to enjoy the food and good vibes at The Barnard Inn and Max's Tavern. Leave your devices in the car because there is no wifi on purpose. Enjoy some great food, meet "strangers" from everywhere/anywhere and drink too much because there is no where else to be. This is Vermont after all. I wish the Weiner Schnitzel was still $16. read more

We have high standards-my boyfriend is a professional chef, and we regularly eat in Michelin starred restaurants...and we LOVED this restaurant. We were so pleased to find excellent food in the middle of Vermont! Excellent wine list too! We had the special, the rack of lamb, and it was delicious, perfectly cooked and flavorful. We also had the Morel fettuccini...divine! The noodles were freshly made and cooked perfectly, there were plenty of morels, and the sauce was so divine I said I could eat it as soup! One of us has many food allergies and they were generous in helping us find safe choices, and making changes in dishes to suit their needs. For desert, the bread pudding was a yummy way to finish a delightful meal. We will return when we are in the area again. read more

Barnard Inn was fantastic. My friend and I shared the cheese plate, and then we had the Coq au Vin and Weinerschniztzel. Both entrees were delicious. The environment at Barnard is amazing. It feels like an old tavern and the back room has a warm fire burning. Very cozy. The place is family owned and the staff is super friendly. I highly recommend this spot if you are passing through the area. read more

Very quaint place. I'm giving this three stars because even though our dinner was very good I feel this is a little overpriced. A mixed drink should not be $12.. we ordered pierogies which were good and parpadelle which was very good. No bread basket ? Not even a bread stick ?? Dessert was good too but way over priced. I think they should make the menu a little scaled down may be a burger? A group of teens were walking in right after us not much of a choice for them.. My family has a vacation home in Barnard Vt and has enjoyed meals at the Barnard Inn many times. Not anymore! We made a reservation for my daughter's birthday two weeks in advance for outside dining due to the Covid Pandemic for Saturday evening. When we arrived we were told we didn't have a reservation. Then the story changed to we tried to contact you but you did not return our call! Incidentally I had no messages or missed calls from any Vermont locations. Next we were informed due to Covid 19 there was a new policy to add an extra 20 dollar surcharge to each person in the party. (100 dollars for five people at a picnic table with no umbrella). Surprised and disappointed in the incredibly rude and dishonest treatment from this establishment. read more

Oh how I want to love the Barnard Inn. It's a local place, and it has high aspirations. The menu is ambitious with lots of local ingredients. The service however is never very good, and verged on negligent tonight. We sat for nearly 10 minutes (with a reservation!) before someone took our drinks order. On a Friday night, they were training a new bartender, who took forever to make vodka martinis up. We always had to ask, can we order...? And, it wasn't busy. Since it's so expensive, we expect better. The food, when you get it, is good, but we are not going back any time soon. read more

The pub is where it's at. Fantastic food and friendly, unselfish service. Charming, consistent and quintessential Vermont establishment. New, different dinner specials which seem to fit the season. Very friendly to vegetarians but only "off" the menu. Ok for family but better for romantic dates. Funny that nobody eats in the dining room anymore - you should walk in the entrance on the South side. Thank goodness it's a great experience because there are very few choices in this neck of the woods. read more

The food is just the beginning of a fabulous experience at the Barnard Inn. Will and his team in the kitchen consistently put out amazing and eclectic dishes. He uses the best ingredients and it's obvious that it's all from scratch. Besides the food, the staff is tough to beat. They are all very knowledgeable and very accommodating as well as some of the friendliest people we have met in the area. Next, the atmosphere....it is exactly what you are looking for in a quiet Vermont town. Very cozy with a rustic feel. Anytime we are in the area The Barnard Inn is a must. We celebrated our anniversary at the Barnard Inn tavern. I was a bit suspect of how good it could be as it's a pretty rustic (but charming) vibe. We sat near the door and the server was super accommodating and moved us to a quieter (and warmer:-) table. From there it got better and better. The food was superb. The seafood curry was spicy and tasty and the duck confit was perfect. The bread pudding was spectacular and the wine was a perfect pair. The staff was extremely knowledgeable and very helpful picking the wine and making suggestions on entrees. We were full and happy and enjoyed every minute. Highly recommend! read more

We ate on the dining room side - not the grill side. It was gorgeous and we were the only ones. The garlic and marinara mussels were to die for as was the roast duck and the cheese cake with blueberry compote. Sinatra's crooning and the fire place made it a really romantic evening. Ate dinner at Max's Tabern over the long weekend on a Saturday. Max's Tavern was rustic and quaint, and the food, while homey could tell was made with fresh and local ingredients. I had the "house favorite" schnitzel and my gf had the pierogies. We started out with the Brussel sprouts which we thought was the best thing we ate. We thought the food was good, not great. I thought the lemon-caper sauce was a tad too sweet. The pierogies were good, except one of them had a hunk of pepper on it. The ambiance was really nice and a nice reminder of Vermont. My husband and I had dinner this evening at the Inn and we were both very disappointed. The service was very good but both of our meals were blah. Yes, they were not bad and ate them, but I definitely would not return. I ordered the Wiener schnitzel made with chicken, and it came with two potato sides; mashed (no gravy) and roasted finger potatoes. That was weird. My husband's seafood curry was passable...nothing more. No salads came with the meals. We received two small pieces of bread with our meal. Also, there were no salt and pepper shakers on the table. Why? We ordered desert, also a big disappointment. My husband's carrot cake was actually a bundt cake and my blueberry/apple crumble was flavorless. Very little sugar and I could taste the flour in the crumble. All in all for $100, it was not worth it. We will not return. If chef/owner won't put salt and pepper on the tables, they need to provide a more flavorful exciting offerings. Summing it up in one word: boring. If I want boring, I'll go to Denny's for a whole lot less money. read more

My favorite restaurant in Woodstock VT. Dined there 3 times, twice with kids even and they have been very accommodating. Eating either at the tavern or in the dining room is great. Ingredients make the difference. Very quaint and intimate. If you stay after dark they usually have a fire pit outside. Beware of the aggressive rooster in the nearby barn, pretty territorial. read more

A somewhat limited menu with excellent unique choices. My meal was excellent. I had the wiener schnitzel made with chicken. It was an extremely generous portion. Nice casual environment. Excellent service. A little remote and my GPS had trouble providing the routing. Quite a variety of beers offered. People next to us had ordered a spinach salad. It looked amazing. read more

We went to the tavern at the Barnard in for New Year's eve dinner. We were told we must have a reservation however there were only three other tables in the room. Granted we went early but felt like if we didn't take an early reservation would be able to eat. Our server was friendly however gave us a lot of information about his personal life. I ordered the salmon which when it arrived smelled horrible. I tried one bite and thought it was terrible. I sent it back and was offered and another meal however I declined. My friend ordered the chicken pot pie and it was no better than a Swanson's chicken pot pie.It was dry and flavorless. We would not recommend this restaurant and will not be going back. While they comped my meal, we felt like they did so be-grudgingly. We ordered a fillet mignon to take home that was $39 and literally the size of a golf ball with one potato pancake on the side.This is unfortunate because we have a home in the area and we're looking for a regular place to eat.PS Please delete our credit card information that you have hand written in a book to save our table. Ate a quiet dinner late on a Sunday night at Max's Tavern (I don't think they are usually open Sunday evenings but had special hours for the busy October season). Max's Tavern was rustic and quaint, and the food, while homey was of the highest quality ingredients, techniques, and flavors. I have major appreciation for the amazing gluten free options (and care the chef put into the gf menu) - having a serious allergy makes me grateful for places like this. Both my boyfriend and I loved our meals; he had their "house favorite" schnitzel and I had the pumpkin risotto. The Awesome Tots were a great way to start the meal. And the flourless chocolate cake was both rich and sweet/not-to-sweet. The ambiance was really perfect and we just loved our meal here. I also loved their non-device policy, clearly aimed at keeping the mood relaxed and homey (but it was perfectly ok to take photos)!
