The hostess was incredibly personable and sweet. I'd had a crap day and really just wanted a beer. It was 5 minutes to close. I figured it wasn't going to happen, but I figured I'd look at their draft menu for the next day and get an idea of what I'd want to eat when I come back. Not only did they take great care of me and get me a MUCH needed beer, but when I came back to eat the next day it got even better! I couldn't decide which beer I wanted. The girl was SO nice and gave me half of each. Good call, because I definitely liked one more than the other! Now HERE is the BEST PART: the worthy burger. Sweet Jesus. I heard angels. Seriously one of the best burgers I've ever had. Ever. The bun was perfect and THOSE PICKLES! The cheese was perfectly melted. Just the right amount of secret sauce. Did I mention the pickles were amazing? I also ordered truffle fries with Parmesan and a kid size order of the Mac and cheese. Because real cheese. They weren't bad. The truffle fries were on the milder side, but tasty. Maybe a little soft. Pro tip: get the pesto aoli to dip! I like homemade Mac and cheese and I hardly ate more than a few bites. I had heard great things but eh. Maybe I was just in love with the burger! I didn't get a picture. My phone died and I couldn't wait do yourself a favor- get the worth burger with some extra pickles on the side!

Vic Tavern was happily open on the night we were in Woodstock. Since we were staying right at the…read moreVillage Inn of Woodstock, it made sense to eat there where the Vic Tavern was located. For appetizers, we ordered the Chicken & Shrimp Spring Rolls, which consisted of a combination of ground chicken and shrimp mixed with cabbage, cilantro, onion and ginger served with a savory and sweet dipping sauce. Very tasty; we gobbled them up. We also ordered the Chicken Bao, which was filled with marinated Thai chicken satay that had the lovely and delicious peanut sauce in three fluffy bao buns, accompanied by some cucumber relish, which is always refreshing and slightly sweet and vinegar-y. This dish was even better and probably my favorite dish of the night. The bao buns were truly fluffy and soft, and nothing can go wrong when there's peanut sauce throughout. Yummmm. For our entrees, I had wanted to get a scallop dish that I don't even remember the specifics of, but I was told they were out of them, which disappointed me, so I went with crab cakes instead. They were tasty and at least real crab, but I was missing the opportunity to have scallops. The jasmine rice that accompanied the crab cakes was nothing spectacular, just rice. For the vegetable, it was some garnish of red, yellow and orange peppers, but I didn't eat it. Didn't really go with what I was eating. My husband ordered filet mignon, which he said he enjoyed. His dish also was accompanied by green beans, which he also liked. The filet was also served with the plain jasmine rice, which, to me, is a strange side dish for steak, but okay. That's what they served. The menu was very small, and I'm thinking that based on the side dishes that were the same for each of the 5 entree choices, the kitchen chefs/cooks could only handle a limited amount of foods to prep for the evening. I'm not saying I could do better, and I know it's hard work whatever they turn out...but it was definitely noticeable to me. The inn's room rate includes a nice breakfast in the morning. It comes with juice, a nice bowl of sweetened yogurt, to which fresh fruit and a smattering of granola were added. Then, we had a choice of a Belgian waffle with fresh fruit and whipped cream, an omelette, or eggs prepared however else we might've wanted them prepared. The omelette or eggs came with toast and "alternating" sausage or bacon. Luckily for me, we were eating there on a sausage day (I don't like or eat bacon), and they simply don't make both on the same day. The sausage links were very small, kind of cute actually, but I didn't care for their flavor. Nothing wrong with them, just something in the spices not to my liking. I ordered the omelette, to which I added spinach, mushroom, peppers and onions... we get to choose what we want added. One could also add cheddar cheese, but I chose not to. Overall, both meals were fine (esp. the chicken bao at dinner), and for convenience's sake, I'd eat here again, but I would really like to see them expand their dinner entree selection, or at very minimum, add a few different side dishes to truly compliment what the entree items are. The appetizer section was more interesting and creative than the entrees. The entrees were very one dimensional, and I think they could do much better.

Not sure what happened between the kitchen and our server, but 2 of 3 main courses came out cool. One was my crab-stuffed sole and the other was our son's $85 filet mignon. We had to let the server know. She brought over the manager who said they would "reheat" our dishes. I questioned him, um, "reheat" not remake? He said he could redo them but the steak will take 25 minutes (son's father had already dug into his duck by this point). Manager said if we try reheating it and it's not to our liking he'd take the steak (no mention of the sole) off the bill. We said fine, let's try reheating so as to resume eating asap. Of course the steak was no longer medium-rare and my fish was pretty awful. The most annoying thing is that he/manager NEVER acknowledged my meal being cold and removing it from the bill. Only my son's steak. Why? I don't know. In general, I think the food here is overpriced and very underwhelming. Now I know and I don't need to go back.Food did not have the flavors outlined in the descriptions. Our Waitress was very good though (not her fault the food was not to par for the price). The bread and whipped butter was excellent

What truly stood out was watching the manager personally visit each table, checking in with guests, refilling water glasses, and ensuring everyone was enjoying their evening. That level of hands-on hospitality is rare these days, and it made a lasting impression. We visited after receiving an email about their multi-course prix fixe menu and decided it was the perfect opportunity to try Richardson's at the Woodstock Inn. We are so glad we did. Every course was exceptional--from the velvety acorn squash soup to the fresh citrus salad, perfectly prepared sea bass, and the stunning poached pear dessert. The sea bass dish featured Maitake (Hen of the Woods) mushrooms, which I had never tried before. They were incredibly rich, hearty, and flavorful--almost meaty in texture--and elevated the dish beautifully. I will absolutely be ordering them again. Each plate was beautifully presented, and the attention to detail carried through to dessert. Often, when savory courses are outstanding, desserts can fall short--but not here. The poached pear with cream cheese was both visually elegant and absolutely delicious. I regret not taking photos! Richardson's Tavern delivered an exceptional dining experience from start to finish. Keep up the amazing work--we look forward to returning soon.

If you didn't know it, you might feel as if you'd stepped into a hipster cocktail lounge in Brooklyn as you walk into Wolf Tree. They offer a variety of playful and inventive drinks. My friend was able to get a virgin cocktail but I just wish they had more than one single cocktail on the menu with vodka. With my choices somewhat limited, I went with a drink called "Friday I'm In Love": vodka, citrus, strawberry, mint, and bubbles. It looked beautiful when it arrived to the table and was a palate pleaser with sour, sweet, and minty flavors. They have weekly specials, classic-type cocktails, and what they call "happy meals" - a beer and shot combination. Don't fear, though, they still have Budweiser, Bud Lite, Miller High Life, and other draft beers for those feeling more traditional Upper Valley. We also ordered one of their charcuterie boards that featured local selections of cheese and meats, olives, pickled vegetables, cured mustards, and a baguette. A great selection but like most of Wolf Tree, a little on the expensive side. Overall I enjoyed my first trip to Wolf Tree and I'm glad hip places like this exist in the Upper Valley.

Drive 5 minutes over the state line to Putnam's in White River Junction, Vermont for that sommelier-staffed experience. Love the ambience and rigorous focus on elevated, quality ingredients, at Putnam's. They have a corkboard-covered 3-ring binder menu which is aptly named a Field Guide. Trust me, this name is earned by the Tasting Notes alone. The field guide is like a thesis for advanced Upper Valley sippers, Vermont or not. If you forgot your book or paper, just saddle up to the Putnam's Field Guide. You'll find an elaborate offering of editorial descriptions of beverages from wine to martinis (6 kinds) to beer and whiskey (one from Japan). Btw, it's rare to find a wine bar that doubles as a gorgeous coffeehouse serving pastries, espresso-based drinks, teas and breakfast sandwiches on weekends. I'm looking forward to enjoying them sometime if I'm back. The offering at Putnam's Vineyard rotates seasonally, so I will describe what was there on my visits. Visit their website for updated menu surprises. As for the evening and weekends Fall menu, they call their offering Picnic Food. It's a modest title for an extensive offering of appetizers and a few sandwiches. Think fancied-up olives, pretzels, Brazilian cheese puffs, a craft beer mix, 2 melty sammies with Vermont cheeses (1 with turkey, the other veggies), beet and chevre arancini, dips and a vast selection of desserts. Vermont cheeses, apricots, Marcona almonds, dried apricots and crostini are looking divine on the cheese board. Oh, and there's also Superbon Madrid potato chips with Osetra caviar and a mini spirit of Gaston Chiquet champagne. Just saying. There is also a weekend brunch menu with bagels and egg sandwiches. As for the wine, I recommend a flight at Putmam's. In the fall season, these flight offerings were named: the Bella Blanca Wine Flight, the Falling Leaves Mixed Wine Flight, Fireside Reds Red Wine Flight, The Forgotten Bunches Mixed Wine Flight and the almighty and an unforgettable Sparkler Flight. In this flight, I slowly savoured 3 wine sparklers at $25 total. (And no, I cannot spell savour without a "u.") These wine flights are a true value. And here are the wines in the sparkler flight: 1.) Cava 2021 by Avinyó 2.) Crémant de Bourgogne Sparkling Brut Rosé NV by Albert Bichot 3.) Lambrusco by Villa Castellazo ROTA The Cava is everything. All three were delightful and I showed up needing warm fuzzies on an evening where there was live music so the total experience was extra lovely. There is also a whiskey flight! The coffee and craft beverages selection for the fall/winter menu includes a nitro cold brew, a brown butter latte with Maldon sea salt and biscotti and a FROLA New Orleans style cold brew slushie with maple syrup and coconut cream. To any craft and coffee beverage you can add Vermont Ice Cream Coffee Liqueur or Whistle Pig Piggy Back Bourbon. Yes, please. If you are making a trip of it, catch the local bbq joint across the way from Putnam's at lunch and then visit the wine bar for drinks. Layer up, because I've been nippy there twice, and then linger over one delightful beverage after the next. Oh, and there is a charming wine shop at Putnam's with handmade gifts to peruse, as well.
