I've loved this bookstore forever it seems. I loved buying newspapers from England and have collected them since I was a young teen. I just love their variety of topics, and I always find something I "just" had to buy! Another big plus for me is that all the staff knows exactly where whatever topic I'm looking for is located. I've never been treated rudely for the entirety at this location. I also find their books easy to afford and not up-pricing. It helps on a budget for even the new arrivals of all my favorite horror authors, King, McCammon, Patterson, Saul, etc. read more

This place is such a throwback I mean it is really hard to find a bookstore these days. I was impressed by the selection that they had here I went looking for gaming puzzles that puzzles to be specific. They didn't have many of those, but they did have quite a few crossword puzzles, and Word search puzzles to choose from including magazines which I appreciated. It was really nice to see the best seller books and get a chance to read the cover jackets of some of the more popular things that are Out. I spent a good amount of time looking through various sections. They have a kids playroom area that is all kid themed with children's books and I kind of looks like a jungle gym sort of zoo. I think learning at a young age is really important so highly recommend anyone with children bring their kids to this location. The lady that helped us was really nice and she was able to search the database and let us know that although they did not have what we were looking for in the store that we could get them to custom order it for a shipping order. One of the cool things about Barnes & Noble is that they do give a large percentage off for the best selling new releases, and if you are one that still likes the feel touch, weight and smell of our actual buck. Pricey, for certain, but it gives you the tangible experience missed from buying online. This is why AMZN is closing down brick and mortar places like this. Why Borders and most B&N have closed their doors for good. Book for $30 that's on AMZN $15, hmm. Does it make sense to pay double for the exact same book online? It's a good place to find and see what you want and then price compare and buy it on AMZN, you can find most of the same things for far less online, guaranteed. If they kept prices fair then I wouldn't mind supporting this brick and mortar spot but until then it will be to see and touch and feel the products before buying it on AMZN. read more

My experience today trying to do curbside is exactly why I will go back to using Amazon for books. I tried to support B&N but it was a horrible experience. Ordered two books then got confirmation the books were ready same day, great. Went to pick up and that's when the nightmare started. I called 5 minutes out to try and let them know I was coming. I talked to someone who told me to call just call when I got there someone would just pop right out. I called when I got to the front door and no one answered. Called again and now a guy put me on hold then disconnected me. Parked and walked inside.... Went straight to the help desk.... "Sorry you have to wait in the regular line for the main desk". So then I get in the long line and wait with everyone else buying books. Finally get to the register and wait again for them to find my books. I would have been better off walking in and just finding the books to buy them in person. Don't expect actual curbside pickup. read more

They have so many wonderful sections! Every grandparent should take their grandkid in for educational and play books. They also have a huge toy selection. Great Coffee Shop! Excellent magazine and periodicals stand. For a "big box" store, they keep well-organized book shelves and more! read more

It's so nice to find an actual bookstore to wander around and browse in. This one is big, clean and has plenty of staff to help you. The books are all well organized in categories and neatly set on the shelves. Plenty of sale books on tables. If you can't find a book you're not trying hard enough! I know book stores have fallen on hard times since you can buy so many things cheaper online and also with online reading, but there really is something to be said for being able to just browse around and see what's available and pick something at random that you wouldn't have known about if you hadn't actually gone to the store. If you're a reader you owe it to yourself to buy a couple of books a year from an actual brick-and-mortar bookstore to keep them around! read more

Sure, B & N doesn't have the charm of an independent bookstore with floor to ceiling haphazardly stacked tomes, serious weirdos on the staff and maybe if you're lucky a pet cat living the good life in the aisles, but then those places don't usually have a coffee shop for your convenience. This review is part of my "quarantined and trying to be productive on Yelp everyday so I end up writing reviews for places I've sporadically gone to for forever but never really thought of writing reviews for before" series which could certainly use a more concise name. This Barnes and Noble is a nice place to kill a little time perusing magazines and drinking coffee or doing Christmas shopping but I guess it's corporate genericness has led it slip underneath my Yelp radar. And the way things are going with Amazon and now social distancing this place might not be around forever. After all the Grosse Pointe B & N is no more and competitor Borders folded altogether. If this bookstore disappeared I'd really miss it, too, even if I don't treasure it like The Book Beat or John K. King. This is a big, solid bookstore with not only coffee, but also CDs and DVDs - another reason it's great for Christmas shopping. It's easy to drop a load of cash here, but also handy to knock out a big hunk of Holiday shopping quickly, especially when it comes to my parents who are both readers and not computer users or streamers of media so they still use the silver shiny discs you'll find in back here. And maybe the employees don't have the indie street cred of those of the even more endangered independent bookstores but they've always been pleasant enough. I got some good small talk in that sprung from some gift I bought back in December. You might find some better deals at Scamazon but you won't find any human interaction and B & N isn't forcing workers to pee in jugs either. It doesn't seem like this particular store has as many comfy chairs scattered by endcaps for flipping through books as say the Hall Rd store, but it's been a long time since I've been over there, so maybe the chain is just phasing that out. I haven't been to one of these stores in over a year. A large footprint space in a strip mall across from Oakland Mall. Inside it a light, large space. Close to the door are high shelves of discount books, mostly remainders. Then the center of the store is all toys and games on low displays. To one side are kids books and music, the other are fiction books and a large magazine section. Something odd is that the new book display in each sub fiction area (mystery, scifi, romance...) are much smaller than they used to be. Also, teen fiction has been broken out into various sub types. Off to one side is a Starbucks. Nothing too exciting in the age of amazon and other online sellers, but worth a stop to see the magazines and remainder books. This store's manager was so rude. The website said the book I drove 20 miles for was in stock and as could also be ordered on line for store pick up. I was buying for a Christmas gift and wanted to pay cash. Trying to shop & support business owners. Got there was told not in stock, I brought the location website on my phone and showed the MANAGER. He said I don't Know what to tell you, you should of called first or purchased on line for store pick up. Then you would have seen we don't have the book. Then walked away!!! Not a I sorry or omgosh I will have to let whoever know that is happening on our website. If you think it is expensive think about all the people they have to hire and the price to keep this place up and running. You are paying for the ability to browse. I've been to this Barnes & Noble location a couple of times before. And I've always received great customer service, and it has always been nice at his location. I went in there today to pick up Michelle Obama's new book, for her book tour coming to Detroit next month! The store was in plenty of stock, and the book was 30% off, and I received another 25% off with an Internet coupon online. So I was extremely happy about that! I would've received another 10% off if I was a member. But I wasn't, as I had no idea the memberships expire for this store. I wasn't happy about that, but great deal anyway. One of the few Barnes and Nobles that I know is still operating in the area. Sad to say, most the time I go here to browse books that I will eventually buy online. However, for nostalgic purposes, I love having this place around. Also, they have a surprisingly nice toy aisle. If you're looking for a quiet place to enjoy time with you kids, look no further. This is a great location with everything I love about Barnes and Noble: Clean store, quiet environment, ambient music, scent of new books and coffee. Staff are helpful and courteous, and they have gone into the back room for me multiple times to find a lesser-known, recently-stocked title. These stores truly are the cornerstones of our communities; there's something uniquely magical about holding a book in your hand while surrounded by hundreds of others. Came for the Harry Potter and the Cursed Child party. Was super impressed by the ticket process for waiting in line for the books. Did the house "sorting" activity. It wasn't actually sorting but trivia games and it was quite fun. People won pins and posters. They also had face painting, wand making, and coloring for all ages. A little before 12 they had a raffle and a costume contest. The Starbucks was open till 12 and moved pretty fast. After 12, it only took us 20 minutes to actually get our book. Overall, super impressed by the efficiency of moving everyone through the store. The themed events were fun and I enjoyed the nostalgic experience that is the Harry Potter release party. read more

The employees are rude, so are the managers the dvd section is confusing and cluttered. The whole store is cluttered with games and toys. I thought this was a bookstore, not toys r us. Employees dont know anything about the Nook devices. Ive literally sat with people and helped them set it up. The new ceo James Daunt changed the shipping to surepost from ups ground for members. I remember the good ol' days when you went to a bookstore to buy books. Barnes & Noble used to be my one-stop-shop for finding the right computer book for whatever project I was working on. I could read a few pages of one book, get a feeling for the content and presentation, then try out another. From programming to linux, B&N had the right book. Really, this isn't a bookstore anymore. It's a glorified Starbucks. No one goes to B&N to actually 'buy' a book! No, instead they'd rather sip on an expensive horribly tasting coffee, whilst turning all of those new books into bent-cornered, how-do-you-expect-me-to-buy-this glued together sheets of printed paper. Instead, this place should be called "Hipster Starbucks" and should give customers a pair of skinny jeans for every 10 books they buy. Yes, Starbucks 'can' be more pretentious, and this place proves it. Oh, back to the review. Yeah, so computer books. That's what I like. If you're looking for a 'real' linux book, computer theory, or a programming book that isn't about Java or .NET, go look somewhere else. The computer section here is Microsoft this, Android that, how to use Photoshop, iPads for Dummies ... etc. Literally take all the dumb in the world of computers, print it, and cram it into the computer section at B&N. I Love to Read (*.*) Yes I do, so when it comes to books I am picky about many things when I choose one, especially if it is for my collection of book with Ornate hard covers. I lucked out and found this Exquisite Thick Heavily weighted Gold gilt paged Bible, King James Version. It is Amazing to the touch with a seemingly hand carved hard cover with gold leaf work and deep ruby red accents, it's just completely beautiful. The Barnes & Noble at 14 mile and John R has a Huge selection of books and cozy sitting areas with a very helpful staff who are willing to look information up if need be and even to go as far as to order something for a customer if the item is not on their shelves. I found this buying experience not only completely Thrilling due to the fact that I bought an Exquisitely designed Bible that I have been looking for forever I also was very pleased that the Barnes & Noble location I decided to stop into was very pleasant to shop in. Despite my love affair with my Kindle, sometimes I need to renew my platonic relationship with a real bookstore. Amazon is the globetrotting superstore for all my written needs, but Barnes and Noble gives me hands-on opportunities with real paper books that have actual covers, weight, and colour jackets. John R has the next closest B&N to me after Royal Oak, and unlike that store, free parking and a lot of space to move around in definitely have their charm. A massive underused parking lot that serves Dick's Sporting Goods and a partially vacant mall gives further ease of access. This sprawling one story building hearkens back to the good old days when Borders, B&N, and Waldenbooks duked it out for the first place in a reader's heart, and readers were leery of ordering things online before seeing them first. The Starbucks coffee shop inside prevents any need to leave for hours on end, and you can probably secure a seat somewhere in the building until closing if you wanted. I admit I never quite understood the model encouraging people to read a stack of books they never bought but to each their own. Set up at a table with your tablet, buy a scone, and spend some quality time in the company of literary greats. Naturally wifi-leeches and students throng at particular times so a pair of noise-blocking headphones is a must. One of the secret gems of B&N is their discount section. Sometimes you can pick up fairly new releases in there for under $6, especially hardcovers by popular authors you know they stock two hundred copies of during new release season. Other oddities spring up from time to time. Many of their kits make great presents for difficult to buy for tweens and teens: calligraphy, origami, create your own starfighter, that sort of thing. Given the popularity of Amazon and online retailers, B&N is a bit of an endangered species. It's a communal living room/den combo, and the prices reflect the struggle for these chains to stay profitable. Even their new releases can often be beat on cover price by Amazon and B&N's own website. It's an essential stop for a Nook owner with any problems though, and the shop does feature a host of other neat fripperies. They've started carrying a lot of desk toys like Yoda bobbleheads, Avengers figurines, Doctor Who memorabilia, and Tokidoki unicorns. I had no idea they were horning in on this field, but makes sense. Where else is a kid going to buy their manga? Captive audience. read more

The selection is decent. Children's area is large but staff isn't very helpful or kind. Normally, I'm approached by staff asking if there's a book I'm looking for or at least I'm greeted/acknowledged. Instead there was one saleslady who would bustle past not making eye-contact with anyone. My daughter was looking at the beanie bag collection, picking them up, bringing them to me to look at. This caught the saleslady's attention. As she walked past, she brusquely said, "I'm sorry but those are not to play with" and huffed right passed. This is the first time I've ever been told this. I've been to many bookstores, several times. I could understand if my kids were flinging them around, piling them up, playing house with Fancy Nancy, etc. But they weren't doing that. This is a great super bookstore located in the Oakland Shopping Plaza, across from Oakland Mall. The bookstore has almost any book you'd want and the staff is helpful to a fault. My only issue is that if you need help, they often only have one staff member at the staff desk. They are usually helping other customers at busy times. The connected cafe has a lot of traffic throughout the week and is always filled with local students doing work and chatting. Occasionally, some big mouths with laptops will come and ruin the mood, but overall, its a great place to study and socialize. They sell coffee, sandwiches, desserts, and more. While it isn't competitively priced, the cafe is so conveniently located its hard not to swing by. The hardly visited music and movie area in the back usually has one staff person. Its great to sit in back and listen to new artists on the headphone booths. Like most of the chains, this bookstore is pure fluff. Today you can order most of these books cheaper on Amazon.com, but people enjoy walking around. Around the holidays, this place is packed from mall traffic. Overall, I'd suggest a visit. Their collection of discount books is impressive and you'll probably find a great buy under $10. read more

I used to love B&N and would buy something from the franchise at least once a month. But it's really on the decline, and this location is a prime example. I reserved a new release book online, after some problems with the online reservation service. I came in midday on a weekday for pick up. The parking lot was mostly empty, but the checkout line looked like something from Black Friday and was not moving. I'm totally confused by the reduced selection and inadequate staffing here over the past few years. I eventually left and will be buying the book from Amazon for 2/3 what I was willing to pay in the store. read more

This is the sort of place I always feel mildly depressed after visiting. Or like a little bit of my soul has been taken away. It's a bookstore - it should be a joyful thing - not a soul stealing one. But this bookstore, like most in the area - just screams commercial corporate control. It's like a giant Walden's. The staff isn't especially friendly - cold might be a better word. I would not be surprised if they all hated their jobs because that's the impression I get. The little coffee shop could be lovely, but it too is cold and impersonal and reeks of "How can we get some more money from you with the least effort possible". The looks of it remind me of a cafeteria. So - any good to be found here? They do have a fairly decent magazine collection. Meh. What can I say? It just makes me sad. read more

My best girlfriend and I came into this store so excited to grab my new baby books after recently finding out I am expecting! We called in before on request to see if they had our favorite soup in the cafe and because they did not we stopped at papa joes to grab a clear container of chicken noodle soup. After picking a handful of books each to purchase, we went to the cafe to start our reading into this new exciting adventure! Little did we know Laura, one of the staff, shows up with an attitude the size of her hair. She makes snarky comments that we are not welcome with our food, in front of everyone sitting around us. We kindly said okay while confused after Stephanie, the girl from the cafe provided us spoons for our soup, and pepper as well while knowing exactly what it was for. When handing me the spoons she was digging in the kitchen drain prior to handing me my spoon and letting me know she didn't wash her hands first while handing over the silverware that was not protected by any plastic. After putting the soup bag in the bag and not very happy, miss Stephanie came back up after being yelled already, and gave an attitude just as terrible as Laura. The staff here is unacceptable and should learn some manners first unless they are planning to apply to McDonald's for their next career move. We sat in peace the entire time and when we told them we would leave now and they would no long need to bug us they were more than happy to see us go. We were approached by a very kind woman sitting in the corner overhearing the whole conversation ( or should I say confrontation) who let us know that if anything, by bringing food in, we were good marketing for them as after we sat down to eat everyone sitting empty handing was growing hungry and where were they going to go... the cafe. As a pregnant woman she informed me that it is my right to follow a regular eating schedule and they had no right to take that away from me. But because we're Asian , "it's a business , I cant have you laying around like it's your house ." Excuse me , literally 4 other workers have seen us , and said nothing . So what's the issue ? It's a shame book stores are going by the wayside. I find that even though I have a Kindle with schfourteen-teen zillion books on it, I still prefer reading real books. This store has a nice selection of things I like to read. Unfortunately, it is shrinking and you can see that there is a possibility of an implosion soon. The people who work here are friendly and the sales they run are really good. I don't go often, but when I do, I usually end up spending about $50.00, so good for them. Oh, and to the dudes who think this place is a library for one to sit and drink coffee and grub up all the books that I might want to buy, for hours on end, well... i ordered a cd by angelique kidjo. a month ago. each time i called to check to see if it came in. each person that waited on us said it's in transit. well its been a month, customer service is a poor ass joke. just talk to a customer service person in the john r location named chris . he couldn't explain why they didn't give us a phone call to say either its sold out a month ago. no one knows what the hell is going on. i've been in retail since the late 70's ...never have i seen such piss poor customer service. after this post to yelp. i will be contacting bbb and the attorney general in lansing. read more

If you want to know why these types of stores are struggling here's some feedback: I just entered your store looking for two items. One was a Blu-Ray release from the SyFy channel that was released on Tuesday, two days ago. (This series has received critical acclaim - and you have all the books with "now a SyFy series! on the cover - but you only have the DVDs for $40 in stock when Blu-Ray is on Amazon for $32.99. And I would have paid the $40 in store for Blu-Ray) Then, nobody was at your customer service desk so I asked the front desk if you had a book in stock and she sent me chasing down the customer service assistant who ignored me for five minutes before finally assisting me, without apologizing for making me wait. (It was 9:45 and your store was empty). Finally, you didn't have the book. So you didn't have either item I came in for AND your customer service is lacking.
