I am very happy I got to work for this place. I went in twice and the staff does an amazing job, behind of the house and in front of the house. Tasted homemade pizza as family food, and if that was and indication of what food for costumers taste like, then this place is doing something right. Happy and friendly staff all around, really welcoming. Both nights I worked as a runner I could really tell everyone was on their top game, costumers seemed to be swiftly being taken care of, the pace in which they were being taking care of was just too smooth to compare to other places I've been/worked at. Both nights were moderately busy, both nights without complain. I heard a comment that its pricey, but to be honest the prices are up to par to the food and service quality. Holy-out-of-the-way Batman...ok so it was my choice to finally try this place in isolated Locust Valley as I was dining with 3 other friends who live up on the North Shore. Parking was scarce but the place was fairly empty so I wasn't affected. We had the place essentially to ourselves. Half of my party were unhappy with their meal. I had the short ribs which were A-OK. Someone had the duck which again was A-OK. The others had the filet (overcooked) and the lamb chops and both were disappointed. The crab cakes were tasty. The desserts were average. I am sure there are times when certain items are great here, but we didn't have that experience. At the price we paid I would expect better. read more

Fortunately, the company was good for our group holiday party, because the restaurant was not. One of our friends took the time and trouble to arrange the gathering and she was met with broken promises by the end of the evening. Appetizers were supposed to be included in the price, but were not. Drink costs were high. Quality of food continues to decline here. Even the pigs-in-blanket appetizers were cut in half. This place is clearly struggling. Let's just say that our party paid $100 a head in cash for skimpy hors d'oeurves, an appetizer, main course, kind of skimpy dessert, drinks and tip, while an individual diner could have gotten a full three-course prix fixe dinner, including tax and 20% tip, for $39 on a credit card, excluding beverages. You do the math and it's easy to see that the individual got the better deal. The proprietors had a golden opportunity to impress 20 local, well-heeled, sophisticated diners and they simply squandered it. I hate to leave an unpleasant review because I have always loved Barneys. It is so close to home and in the winter, incredibly inviting with the warm fireplace crackling away. So I am chalking this up to what I hope was a bad night and adding an extra star. Had this been a new restaurant I was not familiar with I would probably remove a star. I had my favorite gnocchi appetizer, which fills my calorie quota for a week and it was good - not as spectacular as it used to be. The lamb was not cooked enough and then cooked too much when I asked for it to be cooked a little longer. Unfortunately, our guests did not have good meals. Our server was not a very happy person and we felt badly for her. Whatever was wrong was clearly showing in her service. I hope they are just going through a little bump in the road and will return to their former glory. If not, it could return to the great hole in the wall bar it was when we were in high school- where the beer was warm and id's never checked. read more

Really do not like to bring down a local place especially if they are friendly and the atmosphere is as cozy as Barneys is especially in colder months, but sadly the food has just gotten really bad. I haven't had a good meal there in a long time. The last time we were there, my friends husband had a piece of meat that he said tasted like it had gone bad, with it seeming to get less and less busy, you cannot help but wonder about turnover in general. We used to go out to dinner with friends who loved it there and ate there at least once a week, even they don't go anymore. I really really hope they will reinvent Barneys and bring on a new chef, freshen up the decor, crank up some nice jazz and show all of us that they can be great once again! Maybe if I didn't arrive, for my first time here, with such high expectations I'd give Barney's 4 stars. Maybe, if I didn't have the perspective one gets by experiencing 5 star restaurants that are deserving of their rating, I'd also give big B another star, who knows. But I gave Barney's 3 stars, which means "A-OK" in the star-speak found at this review web site (at least that's what comes up to the right of the stars when I clicked on them). I was looking for a romantic place to eat in Nassau county and Barney's was on the list. I liked the expected charm I'd get going to a place that looks more like a living room (with a fireplace) than a restaurant. I looked forward to fine, artistically arranged food, a peaceful, quiet setting that's warm, hospitable and cozy. I didn't care about price; I was taking my beautiful girlfriend out for her birthday and her happiness was my only cause. I reserved a day in advance. I knew about the lack of parking space so I wasn't surprised to let the valet do the deed. One can park their car for them self, but you'll be walking on a rural road with not much space to walk on and cars intermittently speeding by. We walked in on a Saturday night, 8:15 pm, and were given a choice (luckily, as the place was packed) between the room with the fireplace or the seemingly quieter, cozier room on the side opposite. Since the first choice was, at the time, quite loud and brightly lit, we both chose the other side. Beware of the table near the opening. We had to move tables and chairs closer to the front wall as everyone, waiters included, passing through the door to the main, center room, bumped my chair violently otherwise. No problem, easily solved. We don't drink wine so the waiter kept our water full and cold, and attentively so. I never had to ask for a refill. She ordered the mixed green salad with hummus, I took the crab cake salad. Both served with little wait time and very well appointed, with A+ on the taste. Unfortunately, and it's no reflection on Barney's but, soon after we sat down, on the table behind us, came the loudest loud mouth one can ever envision, short of those people expected to be so...at political protests. I was fascinated and thought that, perhaps, some people get that way because they can't hold their liquor. Either that or something more sinister. I can take it. After all, my love was before me and he behind. She ordered the salmon and I the signature duck (I normally never order duck, loving those little creatures too much, but this is the food that Barney's has some of its reputation for, so I let my love for them go to the wayside for the moment). Both looked fantastic. She offered a taste of hers as I did of mine and it was all good, excellent in fact, not the best salmon I've ever had, or the best duck, not by a long shot, but excellent nonetheless...until I came to the leg portion. It was so burnt that it was half black. Disappointing but made up for by the rest of my main meal. I have a professional chef in my family. He's quite experienced and has a head chef position in a highly valued Manhattan eatery. I, later, asked him about the burnt duck leg and he concluded that the duck was probably undercooked at a high temperature which results in what I witnessed. Not good, not professional, a double (and basic) error. It's a theory but a good one. The noise eventually abated as the evening drew down. She was very happy and, so, therefore it was good. But I don't consider this place, at least on a Saturday night, one I'd go to for its romantic charm. Nor would I expect 5 star food, even though it's possible since, after all, I've only come here once. Instead, since we both pass by on our bicycles during the other four seasons (a reference to the name of a place I used to eat at, now defunct, but definitely 5 star, remember? I hate to slam local restaurants, but ate here tonite and while the atmosphere is charming, the food was just not good. The crab cake was fried and the type you get in a frozen section of the supermarket, the "organic" salmon (what does that mean?) did not taste fresh, the cod was ok but the string beans had no flavor and the rice was hard. Desserts just ok. They at least did not charge us for the salmon my gf did not eat, but unless I hear the food has gotten much better we won't be back. read more

It was our first time eating at Barney's. It was also our last! Before we went we explored their website which gives this illusion of upper class, high-end, ritzy and a local secret of North shore Long Island. However, it's very low-class, snotty, and undeserving of the "rave" reviews it's been given. The atmosphere is that of a country kitchen, but the decor is lame and the ambiance feels like the beginning of a horror film. Especially If you have the service we did. The attitude is ridiculous with both the wait staff and the manager. We had the most unprofessional waiter (Paul). It was literally the worst service I've ever had in my entire life. To start, he's really quiet and seemed like he was mad and subsequently took it out on us, he was very short and not helpful or attentive to us. He took everyone's drink orders and when it came to my husband and I, I asked him to come back because we were undecided about what we wanted. When he came it was back it was 20 minutes later and it was to take our appetizer orders. FAIL number one. Too even get his attention we basically had to flag him down and when he came over to us he acted like we were bothering him. (Almost like we interrupted his fapping session in the back) For dinner it got even worse. I ordered the Lamb Shanks. I ordered them medium-rare and I got Well-done and the Brussels sprouts that came with the entree were not cooked at all. Usually I don't ever send food back, but the plate was $36 and Paul was being a bit of a prick so I wanted to see what his reaction would be, whether or not he'd redeem himself. He didn't. He actually said to me "I don't know what to tell you, They guys really know what they're doing back there, So I don't know what you want me to do" To which I replied, "please send it back." He huffed and said "fine, but it'll take another 25 minutes." That to me is 100% completely UNACCEPTABLE. My brother-in-law ordered the Filet mignon. It was a tough, terrible cut of meat that any chef with any talent would never have prepared and served. We again complained to Paul to which he said "well you guys aren't having a good night-huh" and never brought out another plate. He did however charge us for it. It wasn't until he got the dessert menus that the manager came over and smugly asked how everything was going. we said "we're not sure because we haven't all been served yet and he just walked away. So, needless to say, we'll never go there again, or recommend that place to anyone unless you're a smug asshole that like to smell your own farts. Anyone with any class or dignity. should seriously think about going somewhere else. read more

i love places that have a story. when you walk in here you'll notice on the wall two unusually long trouser belts, approximately six feet long! you gotta wonder if thats for real. well it is, barney was a very heavy man. at his greatest weight he was 850 pounds! he was even recorded in the guiness book of world records at one point. he was the beloved fire marshall of locust valley until about 1930. he turned his home into a bar for his fire buddies. this place has been a bar for eons. until it got turned into a restaurant a decade ago. you can still see the original bar as you walk in the entrance and there are some really cool old photos on the walls and bathroom. they once use to have a picture of 5 men standing inside one of barney's trousers, i don't know why they took it down because that is pretty cool. as for the food, it is superb. it reminds me of union square cafe. anything you get here is tops. i have to say though that the grilled portobello steak is about the best portobello i've ever had. you don't need to eat meat ever again, once you've tried one of these. call for reservation! and take advantage of the price fix 3 course specials they have now! read more

The food here is excellent; the room is cozy, particularly when the fire is lit. The restaurant is convenient to home, and we eat out a lot because of our busy work schedules. The $28 "Price Fixe" menu is an attraction as well. We've eaten there perhaps a dozen times. And we're not going back. The attitude of the owner/manager, described by another reviewer as a "peckerhead," trumps all the other qualities. He fawns over the chosen, but ignores or is hostile to others. Holy cow this place was amazing! My parents have gone here and they said just before this they had lost their quality. But, in the words of my dad, "they got their grove back!" My family ordered some very tasty dishes so we'll go into that first: My dad had the best scallops and shimp (hold the shrimp) ever...it's rare that I steal so much food off of his plate, and yet I did. My sister-in-law had the spicy Bloody Mary which she was said was like "getting kicked in the face with a bunch of awesome!". Some members had the fois gras special, which not only made me jealous, but made them unable to speak from the overkill of awesome. My niece had some really tasty salmon, and my other nieces dishes they said were "soooo good" as they had food in their mouth. As for me, I had the special soup; curried butter nut squash with yogurt drizzle - holy cow this was so rich and so good; thankfully my dad was there because I could not finish it! My middle niece and I shared a very tasty tuna tartar layered in fried chips ( i think they were chips, they were definitely fried), and smoked salmon - whoa to the tastiness. My "main course" was mushroom and sausage risotto, hold the sausage (I'm pescatarian) and it was so different, but in a delicious way. Our waiter was adorable - kinda looked like an older Michael Cera - and he was really quite good. He put up with a large table filled with three kids: one pain in the ass, one teenage pain in the ass, and one adorable munchkin. We are definitely coming back here soon. read more

I had a really bad experience here a long time ago. Went there on a Sunday for an early dinner. The appetizer was good till the main course came. Ordered fish and rice but the rice was totally uncooked and the fish was so cooked that it became more like plastic. After complaining they took my plate cooked the rice more and brought back the fish just the way it was. After the waitress asked me how it was I explained my experience while the owner was listening. As we were leaving in an arrogant voice the owner not only did not apologize but he said sorry u did not like my food in a very arrogant way. One star is even more than they deserve read more

This is our go to on a Sat. night reliable place. The food always meets our expectations. The service is consistently professional. We repeatedly enjoy the rocket salad. The Duck is their signature dish and worth the adventure. The wine selection is one of the best on the island. There is not mystery as to why this place has stood the test of time and has been a landmark eating establishment on the the North shore. Occasionally their is a glitch in the quality and I strongly advise bringing the issue to the waiters attention. Do not leave this place unsatisfied. read more

Last night we were 20 people for a party planned in advance with the owner with a cost discussed in advance. We had a price fix menu. Everyone ordered. At the end of the evening we found out that some of the choices were upcharged and it was never indicated on the menu. The cost was spread out over everyone's bill and it was a significant amount over the original price. The soup served was cold and our shrimp was also not properly heated. So there are 20 people angry about being over charged and none of us will be back. read more

I was taken there for my birthday, and what a wonderful surprise. The restaurant is in an old home isolated in the town of Locust Valley. If you didn't know it was there you'd very easily pass it. The service was top notch the ambiance was perfect for a quite meal where you could actually talk to each other and no one around the restaurant was talking or texting on cell phones. The food....delicious I had the pea soup to start (excellent) and the tuna with risotto which was cooked perfectly. I would definitely go back. read more

This is a quaint and charming place, and I've always enjoyed the experience, that is, until my most recent visit. The mustached bartender/manager, I think Rick may be his name, made some crude bigoted remarks to what may have been his "regulars" at the bar. Problem is, they could be heard by those of us in the dining room, who took offense to them. This was a major turnoff, and turned and enjoyable evening to one of distain. My elderly parents and I attempted to eat here, but parking was difficult so my father carefully parked pretty close to a car behind him. Once we arrived at the door the manager (or owner) came dashing out to greet my mother with the rudest scolding and horrible attitude about the parking job my father did ( given the poor parking situation there he did his best). He even accused him of hitting other cars which baffled us because we both knew this didn't happen. This guy even argued with us, then retreated back into the restaurant yelling "sheesh!!". Family lives in the area, so used to go often. However its gone downhill....one of the few places in town you can easily get a table last minute, theres a reason why. The food is subpar at best. Service is pretty good, too bad because the place is quite cute and charming..has potential. Nice bar, very cozy in the fall/winter. We went a few weeks ago and sadly it disappointed 4 of the 5 of us that were dining. The steak was not a good quality piece of meat and someone else who ordered something and told the waiter about it was met instead with a polite confrontation saying that the chef said it was good...can you imagine. HUGE HUGE no no in the restaurant business. My brother in law owns a very famous restaurant in Florida and this the is number one thing to NOT do. So based on that alone I will not go back. We have driven past this establishment numerous times. The curb appeal is completely lacking hence all the missed opportunities they had in the past two years with us driving by. Supposedly they have a long standing reputation in the area but that must be the only thing keeping this business alive. The menu had potential but the food was completely underwhelming. Ordered the lobster salad special thinking special attention had been given to a special but it wasn't anything I couldn't recreate in less than 5 minutes at home. Valentine's Day Masacre. Called for reservation on Valentine's Day and got a 6:45 reservation. I asked if menu was prix fix and he said yes three courses. But did not mention price. Sit down for dinner and they gave us the menu which was prix fix and again no price. The bill came and it was $70 a person plus lousy wine and coffee. The food was ok. At that price I would expect a gourmet meal. Dinner was served immediately and we were finished in an hour. What a rip off. Will never go back! read more

We came for Valentine's Day and despite being told by the server that they were short-handed due to a server deciding to make dinner for his girlfriend instead of working, it was an OK experience. We waited for at least 15min for anyone to come by. It took another 15min for our drinks to come. Now here is what I don't get, the owner stood at the reservation book with the hostess and sat people. If you're short-handed the best thing he could have done was at least get drink orders, deliver bread/butter to tables. Let the hostess do her job and help out the servers. The food was good, crab cake had a nice crust, duck was plentiful and tender. I don't see us making it a point to return. Yes the ambiance is nicer than Brass Rail, but it will not stand out in my mind as a must return spot. read more

We ate there last evening (7/27/14). The atmosphere is cozy and I would like to go back mid-winter to warm up by the inviting fireplace. The food was tasty but not over the top. I had the salad which was supposed to have haricot verts but were just regular fat string beans. The waitress apparently did not get any lessons in serving etiquette. She served dishes across the table as well as removing plates across the table. For these prices she should have known that you serve from the left side of the patron and remove from the right. I am only writing this review because I felt barneys participates in some deceiving and over the top price policies. My wife and I went there for Valentines Day and they offered a pre fixe dinner for $70 no exceptions, which is fine but when I looked at the regular menu the same EXACT food was $46. The only difference was a small sampling of chocolate/cookies at the end of the meal, definitely not worth $24!. I really didnt have a problem with the price of the pre fixe but to charge $24 more (or $48 per table) just because it was Valenines day is robbery. I have owned a few restaurants so I know you want to make it easy for the kitchen on very busy days but you also want to offer value (why not include a bottle of inexpensive wine that would probably cost them $10?). I also didnt mind the young kid they had as our waiter (he admitted to us that he was just helping out because they were short staffed) because he was really trying to provide good service, he unfortunately was not a polished professional waiter I would expect to see at this type of restaurant that charges a lot money. This is all very unfortunate because the food was actually pretty good but I feel Barneys took advantage of me and I will never go back on principle alone. read more
