The Caesar salad was fine (not bad, just not as memorable as the rest of the meal), but everything after that turned the corner in a big way. The food is delicious. I keep coming back for the eggplant parmigiana and the arancini, which are consistently excellent. But for the love of God, please turn up the lights a little bit. It's so dark it feels like the power went out and someone found a single tea candle in a drawer. Half the time I had no idea what I was eating. When you order a Caesar salad, you want to spear a little cheese and a crouton with your fork, but you can't even see them. I appreciate that the prices are a little high as they are using high end ingredients. My only advice to them is to come up with one or two "we have to come back here for this" dishes. Sea Cliff is awesome but off the path for some, so it can be a little harder to pull in traffic. That said, it had a good crowd yesterday. My husband & I discovered this place by accident and we were wowed. Great wines, great food, and great service. We've eaten at the bar and tonight we had 6 for an early dinner. Each meal was better then the last one. Standouts are the rice balls, the crispy brussel sprouts, and the orecchiette. Absolutely love the place! The decor and setting really can't be beat. Very high ceilinged, exposed brick, tiled floor, old style place. Recalls a class and elegance of the day when Seacliff was a summer destination in its own right (if you haven't been to Seacliff, I strongly recommend it). The appetizers were excellent The calamari fritto is as good as you are going to get anywhere, cooked perfectly and served with a deep bodied, slightly peppery marinara. We also got the artichoke alla romana, which is the tougher of the two to make and it was all aces: fried just right with that perfect citric bump just as you bite through it. Seriously, it's the best I've had. A star came off for the entrees though. Wife got the burger, which was good, but the fries were awful. They were hard and oily. Seemed like their oil temp wasn't high enough or they flubbed the first fry. They did make it right by bringing us more delicious bread, so no problemo. My dish was the pesto. Granted, that's a tough dish to make properly, but even given that wide berth, the execution was sub par. We absolutely plan on going back, we just plan on being a bit more careful with the entrees. I was actually very disappointed, a lot of people told me this place was good but when I went I wasn't to impressed. I do have to say the rice balls were probably the only thing I would order from here again, but the cacio de pepi was god awful, It tasted like they opened a box of pasta and just put some parmesan on it, it definitely was not authentic. I was actually very upset about this experience. The ambience is beautiful it feels like your sitting in a restaurant in nyc but the food just doesn't do it justice, I will not be coming back nor will be recommending this place maybe just for drinks but that's about it. A family member and I visited for the first time last night and decided to sit outside. There was no hostess to greet us when we arrived and this brought confusion about when and where to sit. It almost seemed we were forgotten after our order was taken. I haven't experienced a wait that long in ages and, by this point, we were getting hangry. The look of annoyance for the wait was apparent on other patrons faces, as well. The maitre d' was abrupt and rather rude taking our order. He even had the nerve to suggest my relative "didn't need bread" for the table ....because her dish had bread in it. This is besides the point that she is one of the fittest, thinnest people I know and that my dish didn't "include bread". My branzino dish was expensive and was supposed to have been, overall, very light on oil or fat, as ordered, but came out drenched in it. My relative's Waygu burger was tremendously over cooked, yet cold when it came out, and the cheese on top looked like Velveeta. The waiter who brought the dish also admitted that half the fries were missing because they'd dropped on the floor on the way out! Although it was promised that more fries would be coming, my relative received overcooked, hard, pieces of fries that were inedible. It seems like they were from 'the bottom of the frozen bag' of fries that had run out! It was almost impossible to get the attention of hostess or maitre d' to try to correct the issue. There was no follow up after the order came out to see if anything was amiss or needed. Instead of being prioritized for a fast, new medium rare burger - it took forever to receive the corrected order and there was no profuse apology or effort to remediate for the excessive time by the waiter. To top it off, the maitre d' was unapologetic and offered very poor customer service when the error in and quality of the dish was brought to their attention. 227 is a little Italian with few tables, large bar and old Bar feel. The menu is limited but the entree's are excellent and delicious. The portions are small especially when you consider the entrees don't come with any sides and the one slice of bread is cut very thin. The price's are high to top this considering this is a local pub. However as I said, the Food is great with nice service and I'll continue to frequent 227, and just order some pasta if I am really hungry. When there are people at the Bar you have a high noise level but just nice people having a good time. read more

Came here for a quick dinner before a show. The food was outstanding. We had the cactus margarita, Manhattan, truffle fries, pumpkin gnocchi, and sea bass. Everything was outstanding. Grilled octopus was grilled to perfection. It was served over cannelloni beans, but probably would have presented better over something with color. But taste was spot on. Had the lasagna special and wasn't disappointed. Serving size was healthy. Plenty of melted mozzarella, and stuffed with a mix of meat. Delicious choice. This was my first time here sat at the bar. No one welcomed us or explained the menu. There was one bartender running the entire restaurant which is not his fault. I specifically asked for my burger medium rare and it was well done with frozen french fries. We were never given bread while we waited so long for the food. Last night my friends and I had an incredible dinner at Tavern 227. It was difficult to choose from the items on the menu and the many specials they offered. Our server, Claudia, was well versed in the menu and helped us craft our meal. We had a slight issue with one of the appetizers, but Phoebe handled it in a prompt and professional manner. And on top of incredible food, the bartender made the best sidecar I have ever had. I predict this will be a tough reservation to get one the word gets out. read more

A year later we enjoyed another amazing dinner here! There were 4 of us this time...apps of meatballs (once again they were terrific!), calamari (so tender & fresh!) & grilled polenta w a mushroom ragu over top (was wonderful!). Our friend had the onion soup, which we all sampled & all agreed it may have been the best we'd all ever had!! Wine list was good & my husband's mixed drinks very good. I had the butternut squash ravioli-delicious (tho be warned, very rich!). My husband had the parpardele bolognese, which he loved! The other couple we were with thoroughly enjoyed their rigatoni & eggplant parm as well. Ended with a yummy tira mi su! Love this little gem of a restaurant!! 3rd time @ this little Sea Cliff gem & it didn't disappoint! It's a small, intimate space, but the very high ceilings give it a spacious feel. Atmosphere & ambiance is wonderful. Exposed brick walls, ceiling tiles, great, soft lighting & jazzy kind of music, that's not too loud. Servers are very pleasant-not super sophisticated as servers go, but very eager to please & very friendly & capable. Small wine list, but decent. The burger is AMAZING (& I'm not a big burger person overall), the fries that came w it were fresh & tasty, the mussels (done bianco style) were simple but absolutely delicious!!! I will go back again just for those!! Also had very tasty beet salad. The small plate meatballs are light & delicious too. It was also great to go to a nice restaurant that wasn't overly crowded & loud, where you could hold a conversation with your meal companions without shouting, but you didn't have to whisper either. Wine by the glass & cocktails are a little pricey but it's the North Shore, so it's on par with local establishments. Arrived early (around 6:45 in a Fri night) & we're seated immediately. Place was about half full plus some bar patrons. By the time we left around 8:30 there may have been a table or 2 available but the bar was full. Definitely will return!! read more

My friend and I came in for dinner on Thursday evening just wanting a nice and cozy local spot. The atmosphere was so beautiful and warm. The restaurant was so neat and I noticed very clean. The staff was welcoming and very attentive. The waitress was very knowledgeable to answer questions regarding gluten free concerns. I ordered the Orcecchiette Barese and my friend had the salmon special. Both dishes were so delicious! I can't wait to go back and I highly recommend Tavern 227! read more

Wonderful atmosphere with a lovely, retro-style bar and delicious entrees, my one piece of advice (or rather, request) to Tavern 227 would be to lay on more bar food. If you want a small snack with your delicious cocktails, there isn't any to be had apart from starters off the main menu, which are more salad-based, and not great for sharing.
