DO NOT SHOP HERE Update: they found my bracelet 5 YEARS later!!! They asked me to come in to get it. And told me Covid happened and they still couldn't locate it..I pointed out that they had 2 years before Covid happened to find it.. but was interrupted constantly not letting me talk saying how important I was as a customer and that the relationship was so important that I was important to them ... only thing I could get in was "if I was so important why would it take you 5 years to find my bracelet?" My parents are out of $10,000 left with a product that was defective, an appraisal that wouldn't have held up to insurance had it been stolen, (luckily, because it was defective/damaged, insurance is covering it). They redid the prong setting in my moms wedding ring she's had for 21 years. They used metals that reacted against each other so that the ENTIRE SETTING snapped off at the base, losing my mothers cherished 2+ carat diamond. Our experience to get an engagement ring from Julia at Baroness Jewelers was an absolutely wild ride. To begin, we came in with a diamond already that I inherited and my fiance had already drawn out a rough design. Julia offered a $200 consultation that would go over the basic design, fit my finger, and come up with a proposal. She said that the consultation would be folded into the final price should we go with her work (hint - it wasn't - she tried to charge us for this consultation at the end). Our consultation a few weeks later was almost 3 hours long - we came in with a design already, and the only meaningful things that came out of the meeting were her sizing my finger and giving us an estimate. We decided to move forward, loving the examples of the work she showed us. It was like pulling teeth trying to get her to agree to a price and write it down. I was uneasy with the price but loved her work enough to go with her anyways. I can't stress enough how high I thought her price was despite us already having the diamond. We had even interviewed several other jewelers in town to get quotes. For the next 6 months, my partner and I met with Julia at least five different times to go through the design. We thought the ring would be ready in 6 to 8 months, so we started applying more and more pressure for her to complete the design and move on to production. Here are some absolutely bizarre things that happened during this time: - We asked for green side stones and told her we would be fine with lab-grown emeralds. She insisted we get real ones. Then a couple months later told me the ones I had selected from her were actually fake costume jewelry. When my partner called her to talk about this she went back to saying they were real. I still don't know what kind of stones are in the ring. - She went up in cost multiple times throughout the process. - She sent my ring away to be "certified" despite me asking her not to. When she gave us the ring at the end, she did not produce any certification, despite trying to charge us for it. - She used a different metal than what we asked for/agree to initially. - She tried to sell us other items relentlessly despite being months behind schedule. - She tried to charge us for "expedited shipping" and for the consultation IN CASH when my partner went in to pick up the ring and pay the final cost. It was extremely sketchy. Finally, after 8 months, she gave my partner the ring. It's beautiful- nobody can take away that she is an extremely talented jeweler. That is the only reason I'm not giving her 1 star. However, Julia is one of the most difficult people I've ever worked with on anything. She's long winded, conniving, and lies frequently. Most of our meetings consisted of her complimenting her own work and trying to get me to buy more things. Despite her talents, I would strongly suggest getting your jewelry made elsewhere. I came in to get a watch battery. There was one woman working who said it would take about 30 minutes to an hour. It was $20 which seemed expensive for a Timex watch but I paid as I was in a hurry. (I think I have paid $10 in the past). Maybe COVID prices? She also noticed and admired my wedding ring and asked to inspect it and said it was missing prongs and in bad shape. She gave me an estimate of $650 to replace the prongs. I will shop the ring repair around but I did feel uneasy when she also encouraged me to drop my 2 carat ring with her for the repair that day but let me know they don't give receipts. I felt uncomfortable with that arrangement and won't be having her fix it. But I did appreciate her inspecting the ring as she was right and I could have lost my diamond. read more

The woman working there came over and told me I wasn't allowed to take pictures in the store. "I'm not," I said. Another lady sidled over and said "we really don't let phones in our store." "I'm writing a text message" - I even showed her my screen. "We don't want you sharing our designs," she goes on. "It has nothing to do with your store," I assure her. "Listen, I'm happy you came in, but not if you're going to use your phone." Ok, bye. I very rarely write reviews and I opened this yelp account to complement Julia at Baroness Jewelry she really helped me out a lot twice. 10 years ago I stumbled into Baroness Jewelry for repair to a watch, at that time I was a poor college student she reconsidered it and took pity on me, she fixed the watch and cleaned it for FREE. Over the last decade I have been referring people to her and they have all commended the prices and service at Baroness Jewelry. Last month I purchased a watch at an auction in the UK thinking it was a good deal... I should have called Julia! The watch was broken, totally banged up and missing the crown. The European auction house had really nasty hidden fees, a 29% house fee, a large VAT tax, a luxury export fee and ridiculous shipping fees. After all the costs the watch came out to almost retail without the costs of repairs. I remembered how well I was treated at Baroness Jewelers a decade ago and went back. Julia took pity on me (again) as a 30 year old man and gave me a really great deal. I will be forever grateful and will continue to refer people to Baroness which is a fine, high class, top notch jeweler and there really is no better place to have buy luxury items or have them worked on. read more

Went to go get my watch cuff links resized which usually takes 5 mins tops. But the woman that owns the place said she was busy so told me to leave the watch and come back when she's done later in the day, which is fine, whatever. I didn't, however, expect her to take over 4 hours. She also charges $20 but after I called in to complain about why it's taking so long she gave me a $5 discount. I'm just going to state the facts to help you if you are price shopping to get a ring serviced like I was. I went to Baroness Jewelers to get my wedding and engagement rings resized and cleaned. I called for an estimate (which two other jewelry places were able to give me by saying they would start at $45-$65 per ring, depending on the complexity of the job), but she refused to give me an estimate and said I had to come in. She said, if I made the effort to come into her store she would make the effort to make the sale. And boy did she. I felt a little put off, but thought I would see what she was so confident about and so I went in. She looked at my rings, and told me they needed to be replated (this was true), then started talking about how oil from my hands had gotten into the channel of the ring and if she cleaned it out, all the diamonds would settle because they had been pushed out by the oil in my hand. She went on to explain her process in very complex language that was in jargon I couldn't understand, and when I asked her to explain more she said she would usually charge for that. That was offputting, and the whole conversation went that way. It was just her trying to make me seem like she was doing me a bunch of favors. She quoted me $500 to get both rings cleaned, replated, and resized. She didn't even measure my finger to see how many sizes up. She also told me that I should have gotten a special piece of diamond jewelry because I had just had a baby, and also because I'm turning 30, then again when I'm 35, then again when I'm 40. I'm not a huge jewelry fan, and I felt it was condescending and very pushy. The whole ordeal took almost a half an hour. I went to Goleta Jewelers, where we had gotten my rings, and were amazing. I was in and out in 5 minutes, and the guy was clearly just doing his job, not trying to upsell me. It was $125 for cleaning, replating, and resizing. He said the diamonds shouldn't adjust that way and he would tighten if needed, but I got the feeling she had been trying to take advantage of my lack of knowledge about the subject. I'm SO glad I went somewhere else. I will not recommend this place to anyone. read more

The worst retail experience of my life. I scheduled a drop off for my watch service. When I got there I was trapped into a conversation with the Julia, the service person, required to pay up-front $500.00 deposit for a $695.00 service. Then a couple of weeks later I was called and told the price had been raised to $1800.00!!! I declined, and had to arrange a "time" to pick-up my watch. Once there, she refunded only $250.00 of the deposit claiming the time she spent in the conversation was charged against the service work! I told her that I was selling a gold pendant. She then said "we're very busy here, you'll have to make an appointment." I didn't know it took two elderly women to help one customer. I don't normally write reviews, but I felt it was important to share my experience comparing prices and customer service for ring servicing. These are just the facts: I had two rings, wedding and engagement, that needed to be resized and cleaned. Julia was nice enough, but I had a lot of red flags talking to her. She talks over my head, won't give clear answers, makes it seem like she is always doing me a special favor, started making me believe I should have expected a nice piece of jewelry when I had my daughter as well as for my 30th, and then 35th, and then 40th birthdays (my husband and I would rather spend our money on other things), then quoted me $500 for two white gold rings to be replated, cleaned, and resized. She also told me that because I hadn't gotten my ring cleaned in years, the oils from my hand had pushed the diamonds out and once it was cleaned, the diamonds would all be loose and need to be cleaned. It took a long time and I felt like I was constantly confused and the price just kept going up up up. Never having done this before, I said I would go talk to my husband about the cost and also decided I would get a second opinion. I went to Goleta Jewelers, and they quoted me $65/ring for the SAME SERVICE. It took me 5 minutes, and I felt MUCH better about the guy I talked to. He explained it well and wasn't condescending. Made me think I was getting a great deal, year or so down the road found the same supposed one of a kind ring with same (handmade design) on amazon for $100. I have actually a funny story about Baroness Jewelers when they first opened on Calle Real. I first went there around 10:15 on Monday and they were closed. No hours posted. I thought maybe they don't work on Monday so I went back on Tuesday around 11:00 am. The door was still locked so I pretty much gave up on them. As I walked away, however, the woman owner came out and said she would open in a few minutes and I should wait so I did. When I went in I told her she should probably post her hours. She said other people had mentioned this and she was considering posting her hours. But she was conflicted because what would happen if she just couldn't get there in time. I didn't tell her that most business owners have set hours and make damn sure that they are there in time. It was a rather entitled attitude and I'm amazed they're still in business. What a nightmare. I stopped in today because I was in the area, and I needed some jewelry appraised and one ring repaired. After being greeted with her eating a sandwich and trying to corral her dog that was running around the store, she was finally able to assist me. She insisted that she knew me, and remembered me. After telling me that they did not do appraisals she told me that she would make an exception for me and asked to see my jewelry. Suddenly she started telling me that my jewelry was essentially junk and hadn't been cleaned since the last time she saw me, and if I had taken care of it, the stone wouldn't have fallen out. This became quite confusing to me, as I hadn't set foot in this store since 2001, and all of the jewelry I had with me had been purchased in the last 4 years. The next part was my favorite part- truly a scam. She told me that each piece would require a $40 refinishing and then $150 appraisal. ( I brought in 4 pieces, so $800 just to get them appraised and cleaned) The 2.5 carat diamond pendant was a piece that she would consider taking in on a trade for the refurnishing of the diamond ring and 1.5 carat diamond pendant. As far as my diamond wedding band that was missing a stone - she continued to scold me on the poor quality of cleaning that I had done, and she couldn't even give me price on replacing the diamond until she removed every stone and cleaned the setting. I asked the price, and she snapped " at least $300" " or you could buy a new setting and put the stones in that" Ok. How much is a new setting? Her reply " I don't know !" I then asked for a business card, and she coldly replied " we don't have any" ... I slowly gathered my jewelry, thanked her for her time and left. I have no idea how they stay in business. I couldn't recall why I stopped going there almost 15 years ago - it all became quite clear to me this afternoon. read more

Great place to get a watch fixed! Went in and the ladies were super helpful and got my broken watch looking much better. I got my batteries replaced on a couple different watches at another store and they stopped working a week later, so Baroness decided to clean the inner workings for me and give me a new battery to get them actually working. Very reasonable prices and the customer service is fantastic. Definitely suggest this place as they were better than any spot I've visited in the area. read more

The only reason I'm giving one star is because I don't have the option to give zero. All I needed was for my wedding ring to be sized because I broke my knuckle. After Julia tried to sell me a new ring entirely, she told me I needed a new head and that sizing, dipping and the new head would cost $450. After several weeks of saving the money, I went back on Dec. 17. Julia and Ilene were working, Julia with a customer, Ilene standing behind the counter. Ilene asked if she could help me. I told her I wanted to drop my ring for repair. She said they couldn't do it until after the new year (because of the busy Christmas season). I said that was fine, if I could drop it off they could take as much time as they needed. She asked if I had an appointment (no). She said I needed an appointment because they were very busy with customers coming in for Christmas purchases. I asked if I could make an appointment. She said no. Incredulous, I suggested I would wait until she finished with the pending appointments for service when they had time. She said no because "people are coming in to buy things." Really? They won't see me without an appointment but they won't give me one either? In what world does this make any sense? Perhaps it is just because a repair costs less than a purchase so she didn't want to waste her time on a low-profit item. Eventually Julia did agree to make me an appointment for later that day when they anticipated they would be slow. Mind you, I was the only other customer in the store and Ilene, who would not make me an appointment or help me, was not working with anyone else at the time. In the mean time, I went to another jeweler. He told me I did not need a new head and he dipped and sized the ring in less than 24 hours for $125. It's beautiful. They were friendly and efficient and did high quality work. I will never set foot in Baroness again and I do not recommend them to anyone. read more
