    Southwest Salsa Burger and rings
    Dan R.

"Saturday night special You got a barrel that's blue and cold" (Lynyrd Skynyrd) You'll find the Barrel Bar and Grill on Whiskey Row, pretty much across the street from Duluth Trading. It's a big space, with plenty of tables and chairs and a large bar that covers pretty much the entire wall on the left side. Our group sat in a funky little space with lots of exposed brick overlooking the street. Our dinner was lots of fun, the food was good, the drinks were excellent, and the friendly service was fine. I had a Southwest Salsa Burger ($16) with Pepper jack cheese - salsa - jalapeños - lettuce - onion and cilantro, with a side of onion rings. My beverage of choice was a Classic Old Fashioned ($15) with Benchmark Top Floor Bourbon, demerara syrup, bitters, and an orange peel. Our group of eight folks met at 7:00 and by the time we left at 9:00, the joint was crowded and very loud, with Friday Night fun seekers. Welcome to the Whiskey Row Weekend.

Barrel Bar & Grill has a very nice Bourbon Selection and a pretty nice ambiance. I ordered a Hummus Appetizer with the works. It was a decent experience overall. I was not necessarily blown away, but I server was really sweet.

Mac & cheese bites at Barrel Bar and Grill, Louisville

Second stop of the attempt to earn the "Soused" badge with the lovely Jasmine A. (after we shut down the last place). A bourbon (we are in Louisville, after all) and a beer for me, a glass of wine for her. We got one healthy snack plate (hummus with vegetables) and one not healthy snack plate (fried mac & cheese bites). The hummus was great but the pita triangles needed to be toasted. These were cold and fragile. Not great. The mac & cheese bites started off great when they were hot but as they get cooler, they change and aren't as great. Some room for improvement here. Service was good and the drinks were good. Long list of bourbons from inexpensive to very expensive. A reasonable selection of beers. A good place to chill and get in a drink. Awesome place. Great service. Went there to take in the NCAA final four. Burgers are great. Taryn rocked!

The menu is pretty large for a fast casual restaurant, so there is something to every palate or just about every dietary restriction. I had the delicious Edgy Veggie: Fried green tomatoes with mushroom gravy on a biscuit with an iced coffee. The coffee is lovely and there is a good range of specialty lattes (hot or iced) including milk alternatives for the dairy challenged, such as myself. The staff was delightful and friendly, and equally as cheerful was the decor of the restaurant. No boring gray here! Despite many options our second day in town, we decided to return the next day. The modus operandi here is that you stand in line to place your order, then go find a table. At Sunday brunch time, the line can be long and slow to move. After you are seated, a runner will bring your food out. Our orders were correctly prepared and came out quickly. We ordered fried green tomatoes, loaded tater tots and donut holes as appetizers. The green tomatoes were just okay, but I would say that the dipping sauce that came with them was fabulous. The loaded tater tots didn't really seem like tater tots but tasted okay. The donut holes were decent. I ordered the Chick N' Ditch (chicken breast and waffles). The unpleasantly salty chicken was a filet. The French toast that looked like pancakes were good JP ordered the Avocado Toast and said it was just okay. The Bacon, Egg and Cheese Biscuit was good. I was able to order a biscuit on the side (even though the paper menu didn't show biscuits as a side). The biscuit was good. I'm torn between three and four stars for Biscuit Belly, but because the ambience was lively and the interior appealing, I'll go ahead with four stars.

My top-tier chum who literally went to the school of hospitality and I came here two Fridays ago ahead of a bourbon tour (thinking, correctly, that we should probably have a hearty meal beforehand so we didn't end up face-first in a gutter somewhere). Several Kentucky natives told us that we had to try a Hot Brown during our visit, and since it was literally created at the Brown Hotel, this seemed like the logical spot. The actual Hotel has some gorgeous interiors, especially upstairs in the lobby. We didn't see that area until after our meal, so when we laid eyes on the Lobby Bar & Grill, we knew immediately that that was where we SHOULD have gone for this Hot Brown dish. J. Graham's, I'm sorry to say, doesn't have the history and personality of the rest of the building and just looks like a generic breakfast spot you'd find in any hotel. It probably exists solely because the other dining options in the hotel aren't open until later and they want to give tourists and their own customers a place to eat at all times of the day, which isn't a terrible reason in my book. But it's also unfortunately not very good, and the dirty walls and overall meh appearance of the establishment just make it very clear that the hey day for this hotel overall was decades ago. The service was the biggest miss here. Our waitress was scatterbrained, often not around or around but hanging out with co-workers or talking up other customers. It was honestly pretty mystifying because when she DID come by, she was often overly apologetic and trying to make amends. But the best way to make amends is not to have to keep doing that throughout the meal. She forgot my friend's coffee (didn't write anything down when we ordered, which is fine if you remember everything but...) and when my chum asked what was in the hummus (one of just three apps), she didn't know and had to go ask someone in the kitchen. That's arguably a nitpick and she DID try to figure it out, but the lunch menu is pretty small and it was a little odd that her menu knowledge was that limited. The bigger problem was that we were in there for over half an hour longer than we wanted to be because she wouldn't come by our table. I actually actively looked for her on the way to the bathroom so I could remind her to come to our table, but instead found her off to the side gossiping with other staff. Not a good look at all. So this might have been an overall positive experience if some of the hospitality from the hotel had spilled over here. We actually both enjoyed the apps, which were the only real positives of the experience. The Bourbon Barrel Fries and the Two Timer, featuring Smoked Bourbon Hummus (bourbon tends to be the theme of your days in this town, I've found) were both really good, and I probably ate more of those than the actual entree. The fries were cooked perfectly and were well seasoned/addictive. The Hot Brown was fine for what it was (we split it to try). It's basically a dramatic turkey melt, with slices of turkey coated in cheese and other sauces. It also came with strips of bacon on top, which on a personal palate level I didn't think really helped the dish so I barely nibbled on those. It's definitely a solid entry but it wasn't mind-blowing for either of us. Maybe it's just from where we come from in the Northeast, but I'm conditioned to like my turkey with accompanying stuffing, and usually in the latter part of November. I think it felt kind of weird to be eating turkey with warm cheese. But I'm glad we tried it and got the context at least. You might have a completely different experience with better service, but I'd still recommend going upstairs for any dining. It's a much better atmosphere and you can really appreciate where this hotel fits in the chronology of Louisville. You're not going to get that from going here.

I almost always get the Wake Up Burrito, which is loaded and satisfying, but I've heard great things about the breakfast sando, chilaquiles, and pancakes from friends too. I went to Foko after hearing nonstop hype about it being one of the absolute best breakfast spots…read morein Louisville. The place is positioned as this incredible Mexican breakfast destination, so I figured it had to be something special. Turns out it's just standard Mexican food and drinks. Even if they were using using "the freshest most highest quality ingredients", it doesn't show in the final product at all. Heres what i got: The Espresso Martini ($14) was actually decent--nice and foamy with a solid chocolate note. The Carajillo ($8), on the other hand, was weak. It tasted like plain iced coffee with zero detectable alcohol. I wouldn't order it again. The Wake Up Burrito $14: their biggest hype item. I got it and added chorizo for $3.50, bringing the total to nearly $17.50. It's sausage, cheese, eggs, and beans wrapped up--pretty good, but nothing groundbreaking. Without their green sauce it's completely average, no different from any regular breakfast burrito at a diner. The green sauce itself is what really the only saving grace, but they serve it in tiny thimble-size portions like they're guarding some secret recipe. So for $18 you get a medium-size burrito plus a couple of fried tortillas with cheese on the side. Compare that to mexican spot like Bandito, where the burritos are twice the size and cost much less. This one is seriously overrated. The Chilaquiles - I got the side order of these with the burrito, and were average at best. Just fried tortillas with cheese and a little sauce that had a slightly sour edge. Not bad, but nothing I'd call amazing. I thought to myself, if these had egg and beans(what the main dish has) , would I have been glad to pay $17? The answer is no. Ive had better at the airport. Bottom line: Foko is incredibly overrated. It feels like a tourist trap built for people for those Luisville people who who don't eat much Mexican food and think this is the pinnacle. I get it, the decor is nice and gives that "premium" feel but the prices are way too high for what you actually get. I won't be back.
