We made reservations since we knew how busy this restaurant can get. Half of my table mates and been before, while the other half, including myself, had never been. It was a cooler evening so we had chosen to sit inside. Beautiful wall filled with lots of bourbon. Sooo many options. Probably the thing to see here. Our server was fantastic! Well versed with the menu and drinks. Really personable and told us that they get up to 400 reservations in one day during derby season and sometimes on weekends! For drinks, I got the Revival Cathedral (a take on the manhattan). My friends got blessed bramble and the burning bush. Solid options! To start, we shared a taste of derby, a country take on charcuterie. Country ham and pecans with burrata, tear drop peppers, arugula. While it tasted good, the menu overhyped what it was. Just not as beautiful of an appetizer as I thought it would be. We shared the Meat Jesus, your typical 3 meat pizza. Presentation looked good. It's cut tavern style. But for some reason it was underwhelming. Lacking in flavors to give it some punch. We asked for peperoncini and tear drop peppers on the side. The acid helped but we still felt like the pizza wasn't as good as it could be. For dessert, we shared Sweet Jesus, bourbon balls. They were quite large. Not very strong on the bourbon. Just okay. We did walk around the entire space just to see how big it really is. Love that it's a historical site in town. Definitely a place to take people from out of town.

This place was very cool. Grabbed a bar seat on a Thursday night and had a couple of bourbon cocktails. Literally they have a wall of bourbon. It was very cool. I had a smaller size pizza for my myself, which was more than enough food. Would definitely recommend!

Gorgeous! Plus tucked just enough off the street that even on the patio, I forget I'm in downtown Louisville. Reservations highly recommended, especially for the indoor dining room lined with walls of bourbon. The bar area offers lounging couches and chairs, which is my vibe, and there's also a patio lined with white lights. I indulged in The Nun's Habit. Wonderfully crafted and strong. Sipping one was enough for me. Cocktails will average $15. The customer experience ebbed and flowed. The initial impression was off. When we asked if we could head inside to check out the place, we were told "yes, but we don't want people standing around". When we went to the patio to sit at an open table, at our first stop we were told "you can't sit here, but you can sit here". My friends ended the night saying "So many rules ..." With a reservation it wouldn't have been an issue. Patio is a bit more self serve - grab a drink at the bar yourself. Some bartenders were engaged and laughing, others not so much. We did love the server that encouraged us to head upstairs and enjoy the cathedral's ceiling. The seating areas varied in temperature. Near the bar and in lounge areas, not too bad. An air conditioner was blowing in cooler air. The dining area with high tops was so freaking hot. We snapped a few pictures and were out. I couldn't have enjoyed my food and drinks there. Great spot for a final drink and should be on your list to take out of town visitors.

Ambiance - well I made a reservation for "church" assuming that was the bottle room. Nope that's the dark room in front of the original church. Manager said they don't have a good way to explain on their website...how about you easily label the pics you have on the site. Seems simple to me. So beware...if you want to sit in the beautiful bottle room it's "The Amber" room. We were sat outside in the courtyard. Beautiful evening. Service - not great! Ordered a vodka soda and a woodford old fashioned. The waitress came back five times to ask what our order was. It would've been a lot better. Had she just written it all down in the first place. Popcorn was delicious. The Amber room is gorgeous I suggest going in with mediocre expectations and you will enjoy yourself.

I visited this place for the first time around 5pm on a weekday. The first bar was not busy at all. The service was excellent. I just had a beer and the price was standard. Didn't even know about the back bar until I took a walk around before I left. It's gorgeous and you need to visit to appreciate it. Later that night, I brought my friends. The place was packed. Standing room only in the back bar and very difficult to get service. I've returned twice since then. I've only had beer and a cocktail and cannot comment on the food. When you can get a server's attention, the service is excellent. I keep returning because it's a great place to meet up with friends for a drink. It's not too loud and there's so much to take in visually with the bourbon bottles, library ladder, decor, etc. The patio looks inviting. Important things to note: street parking is limited, most of the seating requires reservations or check-in at the hostess stand, and they check IDs at the door, even if you're old enough for the ID checker to be be your child.

The Last Refuge is such a vibe. Tucked inside a beautifully restored old church in NuLu, it somehow manages to feel both cool and cozy -- the kind of place you want to linger. My husband and I have been twice now, and the service has been absolutely top notch both visits. The bourbon bar is a standout (as it should be in Louisville), with Heaven's Door -- co-created by Bob Dylan -- as the house bourbon. We ordered the Nun's Habit and both loved it. Food-wise, we tried the Holy Fire Dip and The Burnt Offering pizza, and both were solid, flavorful choices that pair perfectly with the bourbon-forward menu. If you love Louisville, bourbon, and a unique venue with serious character, this spot is a must. Reservations are highly recommended -- and worth it.

We stopped at the last refuge just to walk through and to experience the bourbon/whiskey wall. It looked like they had a lot of great seating and it was a really cool establishment. We did not get a chance to try any food or drinks, but the host was gracious enough to let us look at the establishment. They were on a long wait and we were visiting from out of town and had another place to go after.

Such a beautiful place to be! Very lively and breathtaking! They have two bar locations and you're able to go to the top and read about the history of the old church! Unique.

Overhyped, overpriced, and strictly average. The Last Refuge definitely leans hard into its "exclusive" reputation--creating a "crazy safe" vibe and a reservation bottleneck that makes you feel like you're getting into somewhere special. Unfortunately, the actual experience is pretty fricking average once you're through the door. We recently came in from Tennessee, and compared to the dining scene there, the food here just didn't hold up. While the atmosphere tries to convince you you're in the city's most popular hotspot, the kitchen speed tells a different story; we had to wait forever for our entrees. When the food finally arrived, it was "good," but certainly not "great." If you're looking for a place that makes you feel like part of the "in-crowd," this is it. But if you're actually looking for a high-end meal and efficient service, don't waste your time.

Five stars for the vibes, the drinks, and the service! The amber room is worth checking out if you're visiting Louisville and you have even a tiny bit of interest in bourbon. It's a really beautiful space.

I was with a group large enough to close the place down for the night to others so I'm not sure how well some things will translate for others... So, with that said... A stunning location. An old church? A basketball court? A bourbon bar with food? I haven't looked into the history but perhaps the answer depends on just when you came through the doors. Bar service was great. Just looking on the shelves at everything was amazing including glimpses of prohibition era bourbon. No, you are not going to be drinking that, but it was fun to see. I do see they have TAVERN-STYLE PIZZA on the regular menu and assuming that translates to what they serve here on a regular basis is a good enough reason to go as well.

I wish I could give this a 4.5!! The food was delicious, the ambiance was gorgeous and we had a great time. Our only struggle was that the service was pretty slow and inconsistent. They are still fairly new, so they could be going thru some growing pains. I highly recommend stopping in for at least a cocktail! The beauty inside is almost breathtaking!

My group of four decided to wrap up our epic Bourbon Trail weekend at Michter's Fort Nelson Distillery right before heading to the airport. Having already hit six other distilleries over the weekend, we were completely "toured out" and opted to bypass the standard distillery tour. Instead, we headed straight upstairs to the bar and it was the best decision. We happened to visit right at the start of Derby week, so the entire building was alive and buzzing. Because of the festivities, they were highlighting their own rendition of the Derby fan favorite Mint Julep. I had to get one, and it did not disappoint. It was well crafted, perfectly balanced, and served in the classic, frost chilled sterling silver cup. Easily one of the best Juleps I've ever had. The bar area itself is beautifully appointed, sitting on one of the top floors of the historic building with a great atmosphere. A massive bonus: they offer patrons free bar snacks. The seasoned corn nuts were an absolute hit at our table, to the point where we had to ask for seconds (and they happily obliged!). Service was fantastic from start to finish. Despite the Derby week crowds, our water glasses were never empty and the cocktails came out incredibly fast. Whether you are doing a full day of tours or just want a world class drink in a stunning setting, Michter's is a phenomenal addition to any Louisville itinerary.

During an early 2025 trip to Washington, D.C., we went to multiple establishments and, coincidentally or not, encountered this specific bourbon and just loved it. The most notable occurrence was at Jack Rose Dining Saloon, where I had literally the best Old-Fashioned I've ever had, using a special Angel's Envy that hung out in some sherry barrels for a while. Since then, we've both regularly ordered it when given the opportunity, and ultimately decided that the best way to appreciate this fine spirit was to go right to the source. So to the mothership we went. My chum did most of the heavy lifting here and scheduled a bourbon tour with Louisville Food Tours (very strong recommend) that featured Angel's Envy at the first stop. It's hard to really put into words what this building looks like as you walk in and explore, but it's just so...nice. It's classy without being inaccessible, and it just felt like a true cathedral of bourbon. As tasteful as the bourbon it makes. During our initial tour, we were probably in the distillery for a solid half hour plus, getting a quick tour of the still and fermenters before being led into a side room on the second floor to formally taste some bourbon. Paula was our guide, both during this tour and later on, and was just enormously impressive, which I touched upon in my review of the official tour as well. She's no-nonsense and loves her bourbon - who can't relate? We learned how to inspect the bourbon in the glass, to take a test sip to numb the pain receptors and to truly appreciate the subtle notes in the bourbon with the second sip. It was legitimately helpful, useful information that we're both going to utilize going forward. After our three-hour tour ended (go hard or go home), it wasn't even much of a discussion - we came back here for a few hours to soak in more of the atmosphere and drink some more bourbon. At this point, it was probably close to 5ish but the place was still pretty busy; somehow we were able to secure spots at the bar upstairs and made ourselves at home. I wish I could remember the name of our bartender (blame the time that has elapsed, not the bourbon), but he was very good, social without being oppressive and was just present and let us do our thing. After sipping straight bourbon for most of the afternoon, I switched to the Bourbon Renewal, which you'll be shocked to know includes Angel's Envy but is a more summer, fruit-forward cocktail and super refreshing. Was the right call and hit the spot. (We also got waters because that's the responsible thing to do.) We finally went back downstairs to the gift shop, which doesn't feel like the right term - it was more majestic than something you'd walk into after going through, say, a museum for an hour or two. It's enormous and offers numerous bourbons and also some very high quality swag. We reunited with our chum Paula and sampled their limited edition two-grain, which was created due to a fortunate mistake in which the rye wasn't added so it's just the corn and malted barley. You CAN see the difference and taste it; to me at least, it's more caramel-y than their normal single barrel. We each bought a bottle to bring back to the homeland. My chum basically bought half the store, but I remained calm/deliberate and my only other purchase was a MAGNIFICENT black hoodie. I'm not kidding - I love hoodies and have probably owned dozens over the years, and this is literally the best quality one I've had. It has this interesting front pouch pocket design with like a pocket within the pocket for high-priority items like your ID or credit cards, and the hood itself is interesting. It's just really good and I wore it all day the next day as we slowly made our way back to the East Coast. It's been washed and carefully placed in my closet, where it will reign supreme when the weather inevitably turns nippy again. It's not an exaggeration to say we probably spent hundreds of dollars (at least not thousands) directly and indirectly involving Angel's Envy on this trip. Worth it.

So we started with the deviled eggs (Los Huevos El Diablo), which, despite the name, were not super spicy. They had just the right amount of spice. One thing to know about me is: If I see a patty melt on the menu, I will order that. So I got the Merle's Melt, which is a burger patty with cheddar and Monterey jack cheese, plus bacon and special sauce on buttered toast. It was sublimely tasty! It comes with house-made chips, which were good. They also offer tacos on the menu. One of my children got one steak taco and one chicken taco. The tacos are topped with tomato, lettuce and cojita cheese. I was told that these were very good! My kid eats like a bird, but ate one and a half tacos, so that must say something, right? The Lip Smack'n Mac & Cheese was also ordered, as well as the fried chicken, because the menu says that the fried chicken is award-winning, so how could we not? The fried chicken was super crispy and tasty, and the mac and cheese was creamy and made with large shells, which is the best kind of pasta to use for mac and cheese (in my opinion). The service was great, the lighting was great, and we were seated quickly, even though they seemed busy. It was a good place to have a family dinner in Louisville.

The American breakfast had large potato pieces, good sausage, and made to order eggs. Hot coffee was on the better side for hotel coffee. Dinner: they were super accommodating, as we were traveling with a friend with an infant. I called ahead to let them know we would come in with a stroller, and they made sure to sit us in an area where the stroller was not in the way of servers or other guests. Our server was one of the most attentive people I have ever met, and every recommendation they gave was fantastic. We started with the oyster rockefellar and the spicy tuna tartare. The oysters were massive and the tuna dish was so good, we got it a second time later in the weekend. We all got steaks for our mains and added a lobster tail - there was a mix up with the lobster tail taking a bit and they ended up bringing out the largest lobster tail to make up for it. All steaks, their sides, and sauces were fantastic- better than most I have had in the DC area. The food was all rich so under order or share amongst friends. Cocktails were of course fantastic, from espresso martinis to the famous smoked old fashions. We had drinks at the bar another night and the service was just as good, though they did tell us that they didn't serve the drink in a smoke box when we certainly had one just a night before.

Wow it's hard to get a reservation at Repeal on a Saturday evening, even early, and even several…read moremonths out. It's a nice hotel, and a pleasant steakhouse, but not sure it demands quite that much love. Most importantly, they don't know how to cook a steak. The flavor is spot on, you can really taste the wood fire, and the steaks are seasoned well. But the wife ordered a filet medium and it came out blood rare. My medium rare strip was presented rare, which I'm ok with, though it was noticeably still a bit more cooked than her "medium" filet. Having to return a steak to get it cooked properly, at an apparently well respected upscale steakhouse, is a disappointment, a big bump in the middle of a pleasant evening. We started with the oysters rock, which were quite good, and quite large. The french onion soup was a nice classic version. We split an heirloom tomato salad, and each still got two very large and thick slices of tomato, making the split a good sized salad for each of us. The balsamic pearls were a treat. An unexpected pleasure were the parker house rolls. Yum. Though between enjoying them, with the split salad, splitting the oysters, and the soup, we'd clearly over ordered! Repeal is a pleasant fine dining spot in the midst of the Louisville downtown action. They just need to learn how to cook steaks to temp before they rise to a truly 5 star destination.
