This was stop 5 on our tour of Louisville distilleries and bars. I definitely liked the neighborhood feel of this bar. Nice and cozy inside. This place was also down the block from our Airbnb so we could walk there. They had a lot of boozy coffee drinks and I really like that. I decided to try their Espresso Martini. This was our last bar stop prior to going out to dinner with friends. My drink had a house made espresso, Absolut vodka, Borghetti (coffee liqueur), a rich simple syrup, and coffee beans. My drink was rich and delicious and I absolutely loved their espresso. I do not recall what drinks my friends ordered. By the time we were leaving there was plenty of people in the place and appeared there was some sort of event gathering. We will have to come back here and with all the coffee drinks they had this may well be the place to start our day next time. read more

I can only judge The Whirling Tiger as a daytime coffee shop as opposed to its alternate identity as a nighttime bar. During the day, the lighting is dim with an odd "abandoned" atmosphere which doesn't make it ideal to work. The coffee quality was pretty average but the staff is very nice. read more

The moment you walk in you're engulfed in kitschy decor and... it's GREAT!! My server was so nice. Showed me their standard menu & the holiday menu. Even pointed out there was an upstairs ((which wasn't aware of)) I placed my order: peppermint mocha & a sausage egg cheese croissant. Neither disappointed! Looking to support a local brew house? Look no further than Whirling Tiger. This awesome coffee shop/mini arcade/bar set in what looks like a home is the place to go. The theming is old school home, with them decorating for the different holidays. The coffee is awesome and fresh with the typical coffee shop offerings that you can add some syrup flavoring to. As well as coffee they also have cocktails and drinks that you can pick from. There is also a few baked goods which we did not try, but they looked good. The service was awesome and after purchasing some coffee beans (yes they sale some beans from their shop) the barista let me sample the dark roast so I knew what I was buying! Over all and awesome experience so go check them out! read more

This was our second time coming here (only because we don't get out a lot). It was decked out in Christmas decorations. We got there pretty early like around 9 and there weren't too many people there. We got drinks from the bar. I got the Grinch holiday drink....it was gross! I don't recommend. lol They have a pop up bar upstairs. It's $10 a person to just go up there, I wish it came with a drink ticket, but it's cool! It was pretty empty when we got up there about 9:20pm. They have a Nintendo 64 hooked up. We played for a bit and raced some other people. By the time we were done upstairs about 10pm it was much busier and downstairs was packed. I love the vibes of this place! I tell people about it all the time. I describe it as going to your Grandma's house from the 70's/80's. Complete with the Shag carpet. It is a great place to check out! read more

The Whirling Tiger has a great stage to catch cool bands or experimental theater. The vintage furniture gives a fun vibe for late night socialization or now also early morning coffee drinking, culture, community, and the sorts of creative work that good coffee shops shape and enhance. (If someone finds the next Great American Novel or Screenplay from The Whirling Tiger's vibes, I hope to know about it.) read more

I have only traversed The Tiger during daytime...but I did buy some tickets for nighttime, and thanks to one of its wonderfully friendly baristas (also a self-described Daywalker) I was able to understand that there is only one Whirling Tiger in the city of Lou. She showed me the event space in the back- makes much more sense now-hard to put a band up against the pinball machines. That aside, shout out to the daytime Tiger (Tigress?) for its very good coffee, I mainly choose drip, but I have had their decaf latte and it was also good. They also carry very good, albeit nontraditional, bagels. The staff is so friendly, as are the customers, they make the place- and the effort put into the decor just completely allows my overworked heart to settle in. read more

We ended up taking shelter at the Whirling Tiger after a downpour soaked us during a Butchertown walking tour. The staff were very friendly and a number of us decided to order a drink or a coffee while there. I was able to get an espresso before they shut the machine down since it transforms from a coffee shop to a bar at night. I was just thankful to get a hot drink to warm me up after getting wet. read more

We do like this place and have been coming here for years but last night was kinda crappy. It was my friend's birthday and DOOM GONG was playing their long awaited return show. These are our homies and we support local bands and businesses. For some reason the people doing ticketing decided to single out my friend's girlfriend for "being too drunk" and "unable to walk" simply because she was grabbing and leaning on my friend. They were not causing any disturbances and she was NOT falling over. THEY KICKED HER OUT I have a big problem with this for several reasons: 1.If you think she's too drunk then cut her off don't throw her out in the cold 2.She was factually not "too drunk" she could stand on her own and was coherent / aware of her surroundings (just holding on to my friend because she has anxiety). 3. This affected the whole group because of course we're not going to just leave them outside when we're celebrating his birthday. 4. We paid to see the show and as Louisville locals have been patrons of Whirling Tiger for years. They made us miss over an hour of our friend's performance. The amount of disrespect is crazy. They did eventually let her back in but only after being difficult for no reason. OH WOW people get drunk at bars never seen that before ?!? I guess it was the girl doing ticketing who had an issue and dude was "laying down the law" but this sort of arbitrary enforcement of power for no legitimate purpose other than feelings is weird and puts a bad taste in everyone's mouth. Please do better and train your staff to know if someone is actually a problem. Why make a problem out of nothing? We won't be back for a while. read more

Popped in for an afternoon coffee, awaiting an Elite Yelp event this evening in the area. The building is interesting, numerous smaller sitting areas upstairs and down with vintage, meaning old and worn out furshings. I suppose it is part of the vibe. Barista waited on me imediately and was friendly but not real talkative. I ordered a large caramel latte in a regular cup. And took it upstairs to drink. Nice relaxing music and no one else upstairs. That was nice as I wanted to read and write this review. You can look out and see the traffic on Story Avenue. I do belive as I sit hear I hear birds chirping in the rafters, could be outside. Latte was good. Street parking, but not a problem on a Tuesday afternoon. I would recommed furniture updates, not necessarily new but cleaner, non-broken seating. read more

The Whirling Tiger is the spot I drive by every single day. Unfortunately a lot of their events are for later in the day, until now because they offer coffee now as well. Well, this time we went for the holiday bar. This spot has the most elaborate decorations of any of the holiday bars that we had gone to. It felt like you were in an 80s Christmas movie. There's multiple rooms and they're all decorated slightly differently. There's even a theater upstairs to watch holiday movies. I really appreciated the atmosphere and the holiday spirit. I may have to stop in on a morning to get some coffee as well. read more

I've now been here for 2 shows and I can now confidently say this is a good addition to the Louisville music scene. It's a nice sized room to accommodate some good artists. On both occasions I attended, we were fortunate enough to have good crowds and good staff. And there are more good shows coming up on their calendar, so I will be back. read more

A lot of my friends come here a lot, but it was my first time here! They do check IDs when you walk in. There was a concert going on that night that had a cover fee, but we were all there to hang out. It's a fun space! A decent amount of seating, but most of us were standing or dancing. The lights gave such a nice vibe and eventually there was a DJ playing music. Not sure how prices are for the drinks since friends bought me mine. But I'm basic and got a vodka soda, which isn't a pricy drink anyway. Parking around here is parallel but we found a spot easily just a block behind the building. Love it here! read more

We were in town to see the band Real Estate, and we were really impressed by this venue. It had a cozy ambiance m, and it was impossible to get a bad view of the band on stage. It was easy to be up front and close to all of the action. If you wanted to stay back and relax in the back, there were plenty of seat and table options as well. We will definitely have to stop by the next time we are in the area to see a band perform live in Louisville! read more

A cool bar that is pretty hidden off of Story Ave. I have never been here before but went last night to see Creed Bratton from the hit show The Office. The place in the back was pretty packed and had to stand all night. The vibes are definitely cool and neat but the parking is not great with street parking. And that night it was a rainy night so you might have to walk far. read more

Got to visit a few weeks ago and just learned it closed unexpectedly recently. I'm actually saddened because I had planned to come back even though it is a long ways away from me. It almost seems nothing stays open in the Butchertown neighborhood anymore. During this visit business seemed to be doing well. Staff was friendly and the drink I ordered was on point. They even had an event calendar full of interesting events, sadly none of those will happen now. The other drinks on the menu seemed interesting as well. The interior was very well laid out and even though it was kinda dark inside, I actually liked it. From reading Facebook posts and news articles it makes me wonder why the owner did it so abruptly, and not tell employees or the performers they had scheduled to come to the venue. One of them said she is out a few hundred dollars and hasn't heard from the owner. I did read that another employee stated that they were told business wasn't doing good and rent was too high, I can believe the rent being too high as for business being bad, maybe some nights but, not on the night that I went. I give 5 stars for the drink, the staff, and the vibe and interior of the place. I'm glad I got to come at least once before they closed. They will be missed. read more

Another first. A wonderful friend found a storytelling event which collectively joined in a song which was a inspiration or a meaningful time in their lives. Alter each storyteller told one's experience story the musician would play the song of their experience. WOW! I was so impressed with each story and how it shaped or influenced one's life and afterwards the song played by solo artist sing and playing guitar. There was five story tellers each from different backgrounds and geographical areas in the nation. Now the venue. Unique floor plan with casual seating as if you were in your own living room. Stylish darkish mood décor With artists paintings of many types scattered around the walls. Brick walls and arches brought you to new spaces. Open full bar with high top tables to hangout with friends. Medium sized group performance hall with high top cocktail tables without table service, so get your drinks so you don't miss any of the show. Large elevated stage with dual video screens, PA and multi color performance lighting. As I understand the venue offers many different events on selected dates. What a fun evening. Street parking. We went on a Christmas bar hop and ended at the whirling tiger. It was fully decked out in vintage Christmas and had a Christmas movie playing by the fireplace. I'm not sure what this place looks like when it's not Christmas but there was lots of cozy seating and some extra room upstairs. The drinks were good and the bathrooms were clean. We were there Sunday late night before closing. They have cool decor, and cool vibes and cozy atmosphere inside. They have live Jazz music almost everyday. This is one of the coolest bar in the city. Cute little performance area in the back of the bar. Sound was great. Staff was more friendly than any staff at venues closer to my house . (Columbus venues could learn a lot from this place). It was very spacious and also had places to sit which is nice since a lot of small music venues have standing room only. I hope to see a show here again soon! read more
