We visited the winery on Valentine's Day, which fell on a Saturday this year. We had made a reservation in advance and arrived a bit early, but were seated right away. Tables are reserved for 2.5 hours, so I assume the party before us didn't use their full time. We ordered an appetizer and a bottle of wine. The brie cake was delicious--even for someone who doesn't usually like goat cheese (it was layered in)--but unfortunately, no one in our group enjoyed the cheesecake. The winery is both dog- and kid-friendly. All the parents we encountered kept their children supervised, which is a winery rule and one I really appreciate now that we have kids ourselves. Most of the dogs were also very well behaved, though one was repeatedly growling at passing dogs, which was off-putting. While the winery can't control every patron, we choose to leave our dog at home when she's not in a social mood, and it would be nice if all dog owners did the same. read more

Barrel Oak is a beautiful property with kind and capable staff, but beautiful scenery cannot make up for a celebration that never had the chance to unfold as planned. We chose Barrel Oak Winery to celebrate my 50th birthday because of the positive experiences we'd had there before. We traveled across the country to gather family and friends, trusting the venue to host a fun and relaxed evening. Unfortunately, on a 105-degree July day with intense humidity, the Overlook event space had no functioning air conditioning. While no one can control the weather, the conditions inside the venue--and the response to them--were the responsibility of the venue. The staff on site were gracious and did what they could, and we made the best of the evening under the circumstances. But after nearly three hours in extreme heat--and after nearly half our guests had already left--we were ready to call the evening a loss, when we were moved into the Tasting Room. By then, the celebration we had planned had already been materially compromised. What was most disappointing, however, was the lack of proactive management of the situation or thoughtful response afterward. Rather than acknowledging the significance of what occurred, I was left with the impression that it was viewed as an inconvenience rather than the significant disruption it was. If you're considering Barrel Oak for a wedding, milestone celebration, or any event you wish to enjoy, I hope you'll ask the questions we thought were too basic to ask. And if something isn't right, don't be afraid to insist on a solution in real time. We trusted the venue to do that for us, and by the time it happened, it was too late. read more

TL;DR: PACKED when the weather is nice, expensive but great food and drinks, OK view. Ambiance (4/5): We arrived as a party of 4 on a Saturday and immediately walked into a live-action game of Musical Chairs: Patio Edition. Not a single table was available. Instead, there were rows of empty tables with RESERVED signs on them, apparently reserved for ghosts, because no one sat at them for 2+ hours. Meanwhile, groups of people, including us, circled the patio like vultures waiting for a table to finally open. The oyster pop-up bar had a line wrapping around the patio like people were waiting for Taylor Swift concert tickets instead of shellfish. There are small campfire setups around the outside area. But in 69°F full sun with a gentle breeze, you'd think no one would use them. Wrong. The whole side patio and hill area turned into a smoky campsite, with diners getting smoked out and leaving. On top of that, we had to fend off a rotating cast of unattended children. Kids wandered around like they were in an unsupervised theme park. One repeatedly tried sticking their hands in our dog's face while she was calmly chewing on a bone outside like a civilized creature. We ended up disciplining other people's children just so our dog could exist without being harassed. Food (4/5): We ordered the Nduja Sausage and Ricotta Pizza ($26), a red sangria pitcher ($40), a red sangria glass ($12), and the s'mores cookie tray ($10 for 3 cookies). The pizza was delicious, but the crust was so thin and flimsy it needed structural reinforcement. I used part of the previous slice to smear the ricotta around to get a balanced bite each time. The sangria was great, but $40 for 4 1/3 full glasses of wine felt disappointing. It's sangria, not liquid gold. The cookies were good, but for $10, 3 cookies should at least come with hot cocoa. Service (4/5): The lines were out the door. That is not the staff's fault. This place is popular, and the food is great. While I waited the 15 minute line to order, I reviewed the menu, dodged tiny children, and stepped away from random dogs on leashes inside the establishment trying to jump on me. It felt like a low-stakes obstacle course. When I got to the counter, I placed my order quickly. The bartender whipped the screen around with such precision and stared me down during the tip prompt like I was making a morally questionable decision. I pressed "No Tip" (listen. I stood in a line, picked up my own order, and bussed my own table) and his face shifted from "happy to help you" to "you have personally wronged me and my ancestors" in seconds. After tapping through 5+ different prompts, he told me to set a timer on my phone for 10 to 15 minutes and go to a different building to pick up my pizza. Finding this second building required me to use my nose like a bloodhound, following the faint scent of pizza through crowds until I finally tracked it down. read more

The wine itself was wonderful, but unfortunately our tasting was ruined by the staff member who served us. We stood at the bar to go through their wines, and she was abrupt, rushed us, and made the experience feel uncomfortable, even though there was nobody waiting behind us. Our friend was here before and had a completely different experience the time prior. On the positive side, the outdoor area was fantastic: fire pits, live band, families with babies, and dogs all created a great vibe. It's really too bad that the service overshadowed what could have been a perfect visit. What a gem! Love, the fact that this isn't just a winery, but also a brewery. Not a big wine fan, but I can get into a few beers. The place has phenomenal indoor outdoor seating. They've got different kinds of rooms, different patios, picnic tables, I could go on and on. The staff is very friendly and helpful! The food prices and beer prices are very fair. I love that they provide food options; so many places don't and it's a real turn off. The facility itself is gorgeous. Love the seating area around the fireplace. Did I mention, they are very dog friendly. That is a huge deal for me. There were lots of friendly dogs around and friendly people. We got there early a little after 11 by the time we left around two it was getting really packed. This is about an hour away from my home, but I will definitely be going back. We visited barrel oak for a cellar and wine tour. The tour was cool but I guess I expected a bit more. Our tour guide has a blond bob (cannot remember her name) but she was very nice and knowledgeable. You do get a glass of wine to start the tour and a wine tasting is included. JP did our wine tasting and he was also very nice and tailored it to our taste. I'm not much for a dry wine so I leaned more towards the sweeter wine. I really enjoyed sitting and sipping some cold beverages on a cool spring day, listening to the toons on the covered patio while my kids played frisbee in the grassy area beyond. That said, it only gets 4 stars as I didn't care for a fair amount of the beers. None of the sours impressed, and a cucumber flavored beer really missed the mark. We came to celebrate my mom's birthday, and for our first visit, it was beautiful. They had a cute farmers market with small local shops. The live singer wasn't really my style, but others seemed to enjoy it. We did a wine flight, and our wine server (Nick) was super knowledgeable and helped us find what we liked. I even bought my mom a bottle to take home. It was a bit confusing at first, but the lady at the front was so kind and explained everything. There was plenty of seating, and we hung out upstairs in the lounge with a great view. The only thing I didn't love was the food--we got a charcuterie board, and I'm not sure I'd get it again. I got the "Pearway to Heaven Asian Pear Sour Ale" and my friend got the "Wise Oak IPA". We both enjoyed ours. I'm not really a beer person but felt that this was refreshing and crisp. The Bavarian pretzel came with cheese and mustard, which was tasty but with a price point of $16. When passing through we love to try something new. This time we tried the brewery. There are only 5 beers on tap, but each beer is completely different. And pretty good. It was a Sat so a food truck was on site, "Sexy Mexy" not very good, but reasonably priced. The food prices at Barrel Oak were ridiculous and the quality very generic. I did not know what to expect from this spot, but I was very impressed. Their operations and organization is impressive. I'd have to be extremely picky to find cons about my experience. Let's first start with the wines. Their new sparkling rosé is something everyone needs. It was so good, I was ready to purchase it on the spot, but it's not ready for release yet (they are hoping it will be in October). Before I even tasted it, it was fragrant of watermelon and strawberry. I'm not even a watermelon fan, but this wine!!! Best rosé I've ever tried, no exaggeration. I am very indifferent about Chardonnays, but their stainless steel one was excellent. I was also ready to purchase it, but will when I come back to get the sparkling rosé. The assistant winemaker told us they find that people who don't usually like Chardonnay like that one. It had a hint of sweetness and I loved it!! Their yuzu ginger seltzer was nice and light and refreshing. Will also be purchasing when I come back. I can't give an objective opinion about their beer because I truly do not like beer (like if you see me with a beer in my hand, send help). They also have frozen drinks: a virgin strawberry daiquiri and a mango piña colada. Delicious but very sweet. I loved learning about their winemaking process as well their beer production. Their new winemaker, Jeremy, is certainly doing an amazing job. He came in 4 years ago and completely revamped their wines. The new owners, Ken and Kavelle Bajaj, have owned Barrel Oak since 2022 and originally are from India. We met Ken, and he was very nice and appreciative for us coming to visit. They also have a new Brewmaster and his name is Jin. He was great to talk with about the brewing process. Everyone on the staff was so nice and it was a lovely day here. They have food here too like empanadas and pizza that I thought were pretty good too. It was packed there for a reason. It's an excellent place perfect for birthdays, bridal activities, any special occasions, or just wanting a chill and fun day in VA wine country. read more

Im very pleasantly surprised to report back that our group really liked ALL the drinks we had. We loved how they had something for everyone ie dry & sweet wine (red and white), beer, and non alcoholic options (including a sparkling non alcoholic wine). They do tastings (a red, white, and "premiere" which has both) and Tony (the guy who helped us out) was so kind, gave us extra wines to try, and let us sub out certain wines as well. His flexibility was very much appreciated! They have a wine club as well! Service: Excellent. The staff were all very helpful and attentive. Definitely a stand out. Ambiance/Vibe: It's a decently sized place with indoor and outdoor options, different patios and seating to choose from, an indoor tasting area, separate bar, and even a space to rent out for events! Kids are welcome both inside and out but I'd add that we took our toddlers outside since the indoor space was geared towards adults. As I already mentioned, this winery/brewery is kid friendly but you could also dress up and host a nice event like a bridal shower depending on where exactly you are in the venue. Food: Here's the reason why I had to deduct a star from my review. We were given food menus, we selected items we were very excited about, and then found out that the menus we were given were wrong and outdated. The new menu only had a few pizzas available which was disappointing because the other menu had so many varied options (including allergen friendly). There were two food trucks outside that ended up being okay but thankfully one had non dairy options for someone in our group who is lactose intolerant. Our Club made an advance reservation to visit, take a tour of the winery, have a wine-tasting, and a light prearranged lunch. About 25 of us came. All was fantastic. One of the older wineries in the area, BOW has grown considerably since the early days to now include much more seating (both inside and out) and a brewery. It's a beautiful setting easily accessed off of 66. They have a wide selection of reds and whites to try (haven't sampled the beer yet). We happened to be there on a colder day and they had mulled wine available which was excellent. The Syrah was one of my favorites, and the Bowhaus Red would be an excellent pairing with anything chocolate. For food they have charcuterie available in the tasting room, and when we were there they also had a Peruvian food truck and a pizza place called Knead Wine open. We went for the pizza and despite the long wait, both ones we orders were excellent. Staff was super friendly around the entire vineyard. Well worth a stop! read more

Beers were not imaginative but were mostly solid. Great porter but disliked the kolsch. The interior was simple and well done, and I loved the exposed wood and brick in a modern space. While they are separate businesses, there was a pizza pickup spot and a couple of food trucks that were solid enough as well. Very friendly and hospitable staff. We stopped here on our way home from a winery trip in NOVA. We were pleasantly surprised how nice it was. It was very festive for Xmas holiday season. We visited Barrel Oak Winery for the first time in many years b/c we wanted a dog-friendly winery this Sunday. The place is beautiful, and was full of dogs, and happy people. We all did the Premier Wine Tasting and our delightful guide walked us through them (with a few extras added in to try to entice us to join the exclusive wine club subscription). Our friends liked the Can Franc, but the winning wines for all of us were the Seyval Blanc and especially the Vidal Blanc. We had a bottle of the VB with our food truck-provided lunch, and brought home a bottle of each. We look forward to our next visit. read more

This is absolutely one of my favorite vineyards that I've been to recently. Everything was perfect! So much variety in indoor and outdoor seating, extensive collection of wines with fun packs (they had a Summer Break Wine Box with 3 wines lol), 2 refrigerators, a freezer and some shelves for you to grab snacks of choice, and the most fun and engaging staff. I had the Premier Tasting flight after which I had a glass of the Syrah (I think) while my friend had the Barrel Oak Flight with a glass of one of the whites afterwards. We got some cheese, meats and crackers to make a mini charcuterie which we enjoyed outside with the wines. I would go back again and again and cannot recommend it enough. read more

We had a lovely lunch on the giant patio. Super dog-friendly winery (dogs are allowed inside the tasting room!). Beautiful setting on the top of a hill looking out over the vineyard. The pizza by Knead was delicious, though a tad pricey ($22 for a thin crust 12 inch, which wasn't enough for 2 people). I only tried the albarino and the Vidal Blanc. Neither was super memorable, the Vidal Blanc was very light. The albarino was a lot more fruit forward but did not have the acidity of a traditional Spanish albarino. Staff was really friendly and accommodating so would definitely come back, though mostly for the setting :) read more

We met friends here around 1:30 pm. We each had a flight of beer or wine which were okay but nothing special. We tried to order pizza at 3 and were told the kitchen was "pausing" orders for 15 minutes but the waitress would put the order in when possible. 45 minutes later, we're were told the kitchen was closed and our order was never put in. The winery was packed but they are obviously not able to handle the business. We left and drove only 6 miles to Three Fox winery who made us a wood fired pizza in about 15 minutes. Probably one of the top wineries in Virginia to visit at least once. Excellent dating spot also. Came here on a Saturday for a date since the weather was good and not 100F+ like it has been all summer. It's a little far away from the city, but it's worth the drive. They have a variety of drinks here from wine to beer, and very good pizza. I literally ate 80% of the pizza lol. They also have seafood like oysters. It's a big wide open space so it's not crowded and seats are available if you come early. It's also dog friendly and kid friendly if you like dogs barking and kids kicking soccer balls at you. Had the pizza, wine, and a couple of beer flights. A+! read more

Covid-19 Review: In order to be indoors I made a reservation online which required a $50 per hour spend with a minimum booking of 2 hours which I thought was steep for 2 people. The prepaid amount goes toward your bill and any items to go but I found it a bit difficult to spend $100. There were two flights available ($10 each): beer flight had 4 beers out of the 5 offered and wine flight had 1 white and 3 reds. Honestly the beers were terrible, we didn't even finish the flight. The only one that interested me was the milk stout which was not in the beer flight. The wine flight had a warm (why?) 2017 Viognier, 2017 Cabernet Sauvignon, 2017 Cabernet Franc and 2016 Petit Verdot. They were all mediocre but the Viognier was too warm to drink and the Cabernet Sauvignon was almost vinegary and burned going down. We ended up buying a bottle of the Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot but did not love either. We brought our own cheese and charcuterie spread but they do offer some packaged items. Our table was socially distanced from other tables but we were in a walkway near the bathrooms so people kept going by us which was a little uncomfortable so I wish our table was elsewhere. Also there were a significant number of tables open. The outdoor igloos are misleading on the website because they do not look that pretty in person (I was there during sunset) especially at the cost of $145/hour with a minimum of 2 hours. It fits 7 people and they're heated so it makes sense if you have a large group. So the pros is that there is an epic BBQ food truck - I highly recommend the pulled pork BBQ sandwich and pulled pork quesadilla. The vineyard has 72 outdoor picnic tables, fire pits and ample parking. They are also extremely dog friendly so you can even bring them indoors! And the views were nice at sunset. read more

I came here one other time and didn't like it so much because the staff were cold and it was too frenetic - that was two years ago and in the summer. I'm here in winter now and I have to give it a good review because the staff were so friendly and helpful (Nicki) and it's more mellow, fewer tourists, less frenetic in winter. Get the wine flight. Get the beer flight. Enjoy the lovely scenery with fewer people in the off season. You can bring your dog here. They have a black and white cat who greets you at the door. My husband and I just had our wedding reception at Barrel Oak Winery and Brewery. As soon as we walked in and saw the beautiful views, we were hooked. Things only got better when we had the absolute pleasure meeting and working with Melissa. Working with her and her team was delightful and easy, everyone was so accommodating, kind, and welcoming. Melissa guided us through the planning effortlessly. At our event, the wonderful staff even shared that they had been praying for us to have great weather!!
