Stopped in Barrel Proof to grab a drink before dinner a Blue Giant. The bartenders were nice but so slow. We were trying to make a dinner before MNF (Saints v Dolphins). The place wasn't empty but it was close. They had two bartenders slinging drinks. Instead of slinging, it was more like a very slow, controlled and measured distribution of drinks. Cool ambiance. They have some decent outdoor seating. I suspect if you have all day and the place is slow, it might be a good spot to post up and hang out. read more

Love this little bar, it's often filled with different crowds so I imagine any and everybody being comfortable. I first visited this bar after a company Christmas party. It was during the Christmas pop-up. It was a busy night but I just remember everyone having a wonderful time. Drinks were flowing and laughs were had. I definitely will be back for regular season but this review is based on the "Miracle Pop Up" that is currently going on at Barrel Proof. There are two locations for Miracle Pop Up in New Orleans and Barrel Proof is one of them. We went there on Wednesday night before Thanksgiving day and it surely was extremely packed as expected. They really do have an ample space for indoor sit down area, bar area and outdoor sitting area so it is super group friendly. For this seasonal event, the whole bar was pretty much bleeding in Christmas Decoration - there were multiple Christmas trees, Poinsettia, Christmas light, mistletoe, and ornaments every corner! If you order their special cocktails off of Miracle Pop Up menu, cocktails are served in stinking cute Christmas cups!!! These decorative cups mean nothing if the cocktails suck... BUT they were so so so amazing. I highly recommend the one in Santa Claus cup. It was purple in color. If you are in the mood for some holy jolly time, please come check this place out before they take the decorations off! read more

If I lived in NOLA, you would find me here at happy hour every single day. My friend recommended the place, so I added it to the list and walked over after grabbing a bite at Turkey & the Wolf. We came for happy hour and paying $3.50 for the House Old Fashioned just felt wrong, one of the best I've had and probably the least I've ever spent on one. Basically, from now on, when I pay $12 for an OK Old Fashioned, I will think back to that time in NOLA when I had this delicious guy for $3.50 and I will be sad about it...and probably order another just to ease the pain. I walked up to the bar and stood there a few minutes as I made eye contact with all 3 employees behind the bar (bartenders and bar backs) No one came over. No big deal, I just waited for them to finish what they were doing .... Wait a few more minutes .. wait more..then wait a bit. Minutes go by and it's not crowded either. I'm just standing there trying to get eye contact and no one there could give two shots. Then our female bartender (who matches description of other negative reviews) walked by me again and started a conversation at the corner of the bar with a couple .. ok wait some more ... wait a few more minutes. Nothing. Finally I say excuse me can I order a drink? Bartender turns with a snarl.. "EXCUSE me IM TALKING TO A CUSTOMER!!!" Wait a few more minutes, wait some more and then she finally comes over. I am so glad I discovered this place. I am a Christmas fanatic and I never knew such a Christmas pop up like this existed. The inside decor is absolutely beautiful. They put in such great pride in their Christmas display. The drinks we had were all delicious. The Christmas Miracle menu all looked good to be honest, we had the Bad Santa, On Dasher, and Jingle Balls Nog and I enjoyed all of them. I plan to return next year to try the other drinks because there was so many. The atmosphere and vibe was fun. Only suggestion I have is they mix in a few Christmas songs to go with the typical rap music to complete the Christmas feeling. Though at 12:00am on Christmas Day, they played Mariah Carey's All I Want For Christmas Is You to celebrate the start of Christmas Day which was pretty fun and cool. The bartenders were all very nice and the Christmas glasses and cups added to the festivities. I will make this spot an annual tradition to visit every holiday season from here on out, particularly on Christmas Eve night if I can. read more

Once settled we got some drinks I had some beer, a suggestion by the cute bartender so no clue on the name Lolll ... he was nice attentive I believe I had some type of IPA beer was good nice & cold in a tall glass. My friend had a mix drink good as well , the place was not very crowded so it was kind of quite inside not terrible considering a lot of bars can be rowdy & jammed packed. This joint it one of my favorites in all of the world. It's got craft cocktails if that's your thing. It's got shots if that's your thing. It's got awful beer (champagne of beers haha) if that's your thing and it's got great bartenders to keep you wet. I've yet to order from the kitchen but I plan on it on my next visit. Great ambience and a cool building with a lazy eyed awning. Preacher on AMC shot here, and I was screaming at the TV when I saw it "that's barrel proof!!!" The whiskey selection is really really good. They have a lot and they have the knowledge about what you're getting. I like when a bartender knows the ACTUAL distillery that created the whiskey, not just who bottled and marketed it. This is important as the brands don't usually advertise that they don't actually make the juice. I prefer certain distilleries and I want to know who what where and when before I order something I've never had. These folks can help with that knowledge. read more

I come here wayyyyy more often than I need to. But it's my favorite bar in town! Happy hour with half off old fashioned from 4-6 is the best deal around. Plenty of seats around the bar and they have couches and tables as well. The place is dimly lit and not usually too loud. On the last night of our stay in New Orleans, Barrel Proof was on the itinerary as our last cocktail stop on the trip. But in a city like New Orleans, it's not quite that easy. Nonetheless, we went assuming this would be the last place we would enjoy a proper cocktail. At first glimpse, the bar was rather appealing, really easy on the eyes. Looking like an old barn interior with a cross of industrial elements and dim lighting - it was honestly appealing. The bar setup was tasteful, lots of good bottles on display. In terms of the menu, the options were laudable as they were mainly spirit forward - my fav! I ordered the "Alright Alright Alright"; Longbrach Bourbon, Dry Curacao, Amaro, and Tobacco Bitters. Tell me what can sound drier and stiffer than that. I thoroughly enjoyed the creation. So then if all seems promising, why the average rating? Well, I'll tell y'all why. It was lacking the energy that was common at most of what we quickly considered some of our favorite stops in New Orleans. Maybe it could have been the fact that it was a Monday night, or the resulting hangover of a long "Takes of the Cocktail" week. The music wasn't cheerful, -or maybe there was none, I can't recall - the atmosphere was lonesome, and it just didn't prove to be as engaging as some of the other great places we visited. Met a local friend here on his suggestion. Great woody decor, dim lighting, pleasing audio, spring air wafting in, locals saddled on benches outside with their dogs, smoking and chatting. The friendly servers concocted delicious sezeracs. Basic but satisfactory draft list, including Paradise Park for those inclined to a light, crispy beer. Great bourbon and rye selections. The bartenders ask if they can choose for you, which is appreciated by indecisive and undereducated people like myself. Didn't sample the food, but it looked good. Came here with a few friends one night to check out this whisky bar. I always wanted to try this place, but I was thinking that I would just be sipping on straight whiskey. I was shocked at what this place had to offer! This place is pretty awesome with people always at the bar ordering their tasty drinks. There were plenty of tables and couches for people to socialize and drink. Each table has a drink menu and a candle to set the mood. The place is dark, intimate, and lively with people just having a great time. We started off with the House Old Fashioned and it was strong, just like how I like it. As we sipped and chilled, the ice would melt and the old fashioned was a lot more enjoyable and sweet. It was amazing! I went over the menu and saw that they offered a lot of different beers from around the world, which was awesome! The prices were fairly priced, so we did not feel the need to barhop. Overall, great bar to drink and catch up with friends. The place is pretty intimate, so I can see myself bringing a date here one night. A very​ good place for a drink with friends. I stopped in late at night (around midnight), and the place was filled with loud 2000s hip-hop music, a music choice that I personally enjoyed, but I felt it necessary to say because this is not the usual vibe for a whiskey bar. AMAZING! If you're a bourbon lover you have to come here. They have a TON of rare bourbons that I've never been able to find. The prices were insanely low too. $10 for a glass of Weller CYPB...how the hell can they afford to do that. Lastly, they accidentally gave our table away when we got up to order and also gave us a wrong order. They made up for it wayyyyyy above and beyond what they should have. Barrel Proof is in the space that used to house Bridge House saloon. We went in for an adult became after work and it was hopping. Seemed to be a convention group in our midst, so I won't completely slam it this time. Wanted to order a Blue Moon beer but they have a select number of beers. I opted for a dirty martini, which to my surprise was delivered in a champagne coupe (not a big deal, just an observation). We came in to catch up on each other since Mardi Gras, but could not converse due to the din of the crowd & loud music pumping thru the place. My friend ordered a sandwich from the inside vendor (chicken sandwich which had options of varying degrees of caliente hotness). He selected the medium strength. OMG it was fire. Tasty but be warned they mean business. We exited after our drink & sandwich to smokers sitting all along the exterior. I will return another week night to give this another try. read more

This may be my new favorite bar now. I came here a few times years ago when it was the Bridge Lounge but that was a different crowd, and a completely different vibe. Barrel Proof is a manly bar but with just enough class and sexiness to it that it appeals to the ladies as well. Let me try to 'splain what I mean. Manly: It's a whiskey bar. When the guy next to me asked "what's good here?", the bartender replied "whiskey, whiskey, and more whiskey". Don Draper would love this place for their Old Fashioneds but probably hate the whole cigarette ban in NOLA bars. The music playing was 90's alternative like hip hop (think A Tribe Called Quest) but played at low levels as to not mess with the vibe of the place. The food menu is full of things like chili cheese frites, meat frites, fried bologna sammiches and chicken wings. Manly food. Why the ladies love it: It's dark, sexy, intimate and romantic. The entire place is basically lit by fake candlelight. We were in here at 4:30pm this past Saturday and the sun was shinning bright. It could have been 4:30am as dark as it was inside Barrel Proof. There are plenty of tables and sofas to relax without bumping up against other people the entire time. They do have other spirits, wine and beer. The bartenders can make a non-brown liquor cocktail that's just as good as any other place in the city. The food menu also includes a veggie platter and lettuce wraps. Sure I just threw a bunch of gender based stereotypes in my review because well it's my review and sometimes I see the world in rosey colored 1976 glasses. Who cares, the place is awesome. Great cocktails, flights of whiskey, knowledgeable bartenders, phenomenal atmosphere, good food and music from my youth. What's not to love? read more

I'm all about good, fair reviews. My boyfriend and I walked into this bar Sunday night and were immediately greeted by the two male bartenders saying (so we couldn't hear) "She'll get a bud light and he'll get a coors." Cool. We are actually super into cocktails, rarely drink beer, but who cares, right? Well I didn't care until I was labeled by two guys who immediately had to make us cocktails. Awkward. This place was highly recommended, so there has to be good things about it, the drinks were pretty good, a bit boozier than I like, but if you like the stiff, this place it great. Main thing is if I am assumed to be "A Bud Light Girl" why should I be paying $14 / cocktail? This place is AWFUL. Every time here we've been treated poorly. The bartenders are absolute JERKS. We live walking distance and enjoy nice drinks and bourbon but obviously this place is NOT about customers or being courteous. DO NOT GO HERE. So many better places with way way better service.
