The owner sleeps in the over head crawl storage space. Instead of taking the time spent in the bat to actually clean and make it a safe environment. Ceiling debris falling into bar area. I have watched them cross contaminate food. Dirt and grim on all appliances in a cramp area that is so small that should be cleaned in a short time. Owner claims to have years of experience but serves food out of a. Filthy kitchen. Notice the keep the lights din in the kitchen area. Just when you think you know about every bar in New Orleans, even if you haven't had a drink there... spoiler: it is impossible to know about every bar in New Orleans. And I don't even mean the ones that recently opened. I had a couple friends in town recently on a Sunday and we might have lost track of time (and drinks consumed... how did it get to be 11pm?!) We thought we'd keep the party going at Delachaise, but oddly they were closing too (it was a quiet night in town for some reason... let's call it the calm before the Superbowl and Mardi Gras storm). After seeing Prytania Bar was open, we headed there. I love the vibe in here-- very much old school NOLA dive but also clean and inviting. The bar is large and circular and I can't imagine not sitting at it if there is room and I am not really a fan of sitting at bars. The bartender was chill and friendly and offered up suggestions to my friends who were on the fence about which beer to order (bottles and cans only). And although it's a dive, that is not the 'tude here. I had ordered a sparkling wine and with one or two sips, I wasn't feeling it (too sweet) and the bartender kindly offered to make it a mimosa or poinsetta. I couldn't see that happening at (an array of bars that shall remain nameless). I also was not really into drinking more that night, so I can't tell you what a cocktail might have been like if I had exchanged it for one. The tunes were also excellent-- old doo-wop, Motown, Beach Boys (a gal was feeding the jukebox, not sure if she worked there or was a customer). I just really liked this bar. And... the bathrooms are clean! If I lived near here, I'd be a fixture. I'll be back but I'll have to find something other than sparkling wine to drink. read more

The prytania bar is a cool spot with live music and a great 2 for 1 happy hour from 3-7pm M-F and daily unique drink specials. Is located directly across the street from Touro hospital. As far as parking you get in when you can. The live music is everyday starting around 7:00 p.m. And they also have an option with the little restaurant on the side called P. Otis foods with menu items starting at $12 and down they also have nine vegan options. Bartender was cool and had some good suggestions on the house wine when asked and he made a great old fashioned too. The loud music was a great touch. This place has been several different bars and this latest incarnation seems to vary from an older crowd for happy hour and for now they don't have music but they plan to bring the music back. This is a decent bar with an ambiance that has a dive vibe. The previous owners had divided up the bar into other spaces but they have recombined the spaces. Cool little spot tucked away. I talked to the owner while I was there he's really trying a lot of different ideas to drum up business in a relatively difficult location due to almost 0 foot traffic. The space is surprisingly awesome. Didn't have any food. Prices are a bit steep. I stopped by because they had a Steelers flag on the building after being out watching the game already. Prytania Bar is a locals gem! Fast cheap drinks, more of a beer bar but they do have liquor for mixed drinks. Fun block with Qiqi and Yinzers nearby. They have a few outdoor picnic tables you can sit outside if you'd like. Bathroom leaves a little to be desired but not bad for a Nola bar. Great location, easy to hop off the street car and walk the block to Prytania Bar for a beer. Fun place to meet for a date or with some friends. Also, GREAT Mardi Gras location, a block off the parade route, can't beat that. Highly recommend! read more

I was a bartender for three years. I watched the bartender at this bar do light-pours for two different customers. They were not at all visibly intoxicated, so he wasn't trying to save them from themselves. The bar itself had a dank smell covered over by a strong bleach smell that somehow made the stench even worse. The smell wasn't even localized to an area, it was noticeable across the entire establishment! Staff was unfriendly and the entire mood of the bar was drab. Great variety of live music and beers but DIRTY AS ALL HELL. I was so confused because there was a broom in the middle of the floor but apparently no one knows how to use it. I thought it was cool that it is really sort of in the middle of nothing and not on a strip a la Feret, Frenchman, and the like. That fact was really great for street parking. They did have a food truck outside which is a great marketing idea and also ample outside seating. It is a young crowd to me. The band mentioned 90s music and some people were like yeah I was born in the 90s. Which still floors me. Anyway...I stopped in for a drink during the parades 1st weekend after discovering that the Milk Bar was closed so no sandwich for me...boo hoo. I walked in to one patron at the bar and no one behind the bar. And I waited and I waited. Finally the bartender came from the back and served us a well poured drink at a good price. Welcome to the case of the shrinking bar. In my 5 years in the city this bar has slowly portioned itself out into additional businesses and shrunk it's footprint. It is maybe a quarter of the size as it once was. Luckily decent things can done in small packages. Here are four things this bar still holds in it's shrinking size. 1. The bar, the size of the actual serving area where you belly up to the bar has maintained stable. Which is good, because even it's limited size it offers happy hour and a decent beer selection. 2. Real locals. Though it sits directly across the street from the hospital this bar it's a tourist stop. If you work in the area this is a good decompressing afterwork spot. It isn't fancy, but it isn't creepy. Occasionally there may be a dog joining a neighbor for a beer, don't be alarmed. 3. Jeopardy. Seriously. This is the type of vibe where relative strangers will be enjoying a happy hour special and suddenly they will all be watching Jeopardy and yelling out answers and commentary. She bridges the gap between mixologist and just knowledgeable bartender!! This bar is kinda small and intimate with the feeling of being a true dive bar(in my opinion). This spot has been a go-to place for uptown drinks as long as I can remember. You can basically have a mini pub crawl on this block! (Delachaise and Aline St Beer Garden are nearby.) They are very generous to charity events and often sponsor events and pub crawls (the Ronald McDonald House holiday hop used to begin here, before the RMH stopped doing the event). It's also less than a block from the streetcar line. Great local spot and good place to hop off the streetcar and check out a few bars. Update: noticed a 1 star review for this place from someone who also left a 1 star review for Holy Ground. (Both reviews left yesterday). Apparently there is some retaliation going on for something that happened near one of the confederate statues. Don't be fooled by the negative comments; this is a local bar. A bit dive-y, but great service and great patrons. There's no room for pettiness in New Orleans. read more

It's been a while since I've given a constructive criticism. Alas, I digress... This once poppin' night club turned multi-dive bar leaves much to desire. As much as I love a classy cocktail lounge, there's just something about watching a sporting event in a dive bar that just can't be beat. You can generally count on TV availability, the bartenders are typically pretty easy going and drinks are usually cheap. Bad customer service is a deal breaker for me and will inevitably always be the deciding factor that leads me to never revisit. Maybe the bartenders are typically friendly, but not in this last experience. As a former bartender, I understand the importance of carding someone. However there's a line to be weary of when insinuating someone has handed you a fake ID, and this guy didn't nudge it, he took about three paces past it. But that's forgivable. What isn't forgivable is mocking me to my significant other claiming that I'm ridiculous for requesting a Grey Goose & Soda over a Skol & Soda with the tag line that they taste exactly the same just with a $3 to $8 difference. Any bartender who can't depict between the two should honestly consider surrendering his liquor license. I suppose he'd also say a cheeseburger from Wendy's is no different than a steak from Ruth's Chris. Also, I'd be curious to know the thoughts of an employer when someone dissuades a customer spending more dollars. I don't know what I did to this guy to deserve the lashing I received, but I can surely say that with the over abundance in options of dive bars across New Orleans, I won't be returning to this one again. read more

Accidentally stopped in here with a friend when we were looking for another bar in the same area. Really cool space with friendly people. They were offering free mac and cheese when we came, and although we didn't partake, I thought that was nice. There weren't a lot of people and they had a little jazz band playing in the back. Ordered one Abita Strawberry and was pleasantly surprised when it was only $3, considering some other places charge as much as $5 for the same thing. I'll be back if I'm in the neighborhood, but I think it would be a better spot if it were smoke free. read more

The guys working the door for the Lundi Gras show were rude to the point of calling me a bitch. I showed up and while separating two $20 bills to give him one of them, the MoneyMan took both of them from my hand and gave me $10 back. I told him I have him two twenties and I was only one person and both of them incredulously stated, "Well it's only $15. Why would you pay with 2 20s?" He took the ten back and gave me a twenty so I still ended up overpaying by $5. Then WristbandMan said, "Give me your arm, bitch" and put my band on. Good thing I love the Lost Bayout Ramblers but I won't come back here for another show. Too bad because they did a great fundraiser for APEX awhile back. Bartenders: Not rude. What makes a bar a 'dive bar' is the fact that smoking is still allowed inside. For a dive bar it's pretty cool. The staff is friendly and grubis supplied by the 'Dat Dog' stand that sits in the beer garden next door. I love a good dive bar, especially, if on occasion they have great live music. I was there one weekend at the 'Dat Dog" in the Beer Garden and I could hear a band named "Gal Holiday" performing and from the sound of it they were throwing a hell of a party playing everything from gospel to bluegrass! I happened by Prytania Bar this past Saturday, the last day before what's become known as "historic hurricane week" and they were having a "Vinyl Party!" Do you know what that means? That means there were disc-jockeys there actually spinning 45's and LP's on two turntables. And they were spinning 'dusties' from the 50's, 60's and 70's. If you were born, coming of age or a child in any of those decades you know that was some hip shaking, foot stomping, hand clapping kind of music. The name of this fabulous duo bringing this heat to New Orleans is "Heatwave-New Orleans." They call me their ''hero.' Once I started dancing, I danced for two hours straight. I would have danced longer had it not been for the smoke. Those songs, from those decades will make you shake a tail feather because no matter what they played...I danced. That's how great it was! I mean they played everything...they even asked me for requests. How cool is that? I don't know when they will return there, but if you're in the neighborhood of the wine bar, the beer garden, or the sovereign pub and you're looking for a fabulous night out, you may as well stop on by The Prytania Bar because you just never know what may be on and 'poppin.' Possible Caveat (because not everybody in a bar is a drinker) there is a ten dollar minimum to pay with a card. read more

A fun local bar with friendly patrons! We stumbled upon his place after getting a little off the beaten path roaming the garden district in search of a cemetery. Although we stopped in just to use the bathroom and get our bearings, we ended up staying for well over an hour enjoying cheap beers and idle chitchat with our fellow bar mates. There was a Saints Game on, and everyone was uber excited even though apparently this tends to be the hangout for Michigan fans. (Yes, NOLA really *does* have everything.) The only downfall is that the ladies room was pretty dismal and kind of gross. However, it's a dive bar, not the Monteleone. 4 stars for what it is! read more

After checking into the best Western a few blocks away, I had some time to kill and took a walk in the 'hood. Came across this bar with a sign outside saying "Cold beer served inside".... in my last post, I mentioned how the humidity is really getting to me, so cold beer DID seem refreshing. Went inside and grabbed a seat @ the bar.... it was fairly empty, as it was a Sunday night. There was a group of nurses, dressed in scrubs at a table nearby, having drifted in from the hospital across the street, and there were a few other people intermingled at tables and the bars, but the whole place couldn't hold more than 50 seats. Several mirrors from decades past adorned the walls, and the air hung heavy with humidity. I didn't notice any fans to move it through the bar, so I was actually able to lean against the thickness as I sat waiting to catch the bartender's eye. The bartender, Christian, was a transplant from D.C., having moved here 3 years ago~That didn't stop him from being super helpful about recommendations in town. He chatted me up on some music, recommended three breakfast places, and pointed me towards a red ale in cans that is fairly new on the NOLA scene. As I drank on my Missisisippi red, I was surprised to have something so smooth so far from the Denver Beer Napa Valley. In the past few days, I have had to be content with Miller High Life, Bud Light, or water, so this was a nice throwback! Only bar in Nola who plays each Michigan football game and they do it right by playing the Michigan fight song after TDs and all commercials are muted while they play music.
