After dinner, we walked around and wanted to check out the Barrelhouse. In the basement area, there are a few pool tables and we enjoyed a few rounds of game. It got a little busy Tuesday night after 8 pm. As we headed up to the ground level, we saw a live band with awesome music and a few people are dancing and enjoying the chill ambience. This is one of those places you have to walk into with the mindset that it is not going to be some high end cocktail lounge and you will be fine. First floor had music and a large bar. More of a typical bar feel for a city. The downstairs has another smaller bar and pool tables. This felt like a college bar. Floor was sticky. Overall kind of dingy. This place was ok but things quickly turned sour. The security guy "chase" choke hold my husband for trying to help a friend who went out for a smoke to come back in to continue playing pool. He assaulted my husband for no reason and was uncalled for. Don't ever come here. As a tourist, I have a sour taste of savanna hospitality. This is not ok. This place is not safe to come out as a group. The guy grabbed him by his neck and threw him on the street. We were all inside playing pool peacefully, but I guess caring for someone it's wrong. I was inside waiting for them. After waiting's long time I came outside to see what was happening. The shit head security said that was his job, really? That's your job? I don't think so. Barrelhouse South is one of the few nightlife options for the late night crowd in Savannah. They have a large bar and live music here. We saw two different bands, which were both awesome. They did some great covers and they even got the crowd dancing. The bartenders were really fun and were joking around. Some people sitting at the table across from us got food here which did look good too. The flip side of this being a fun bar is that some people were out of control here. We were continuously being badgered by one guy and I had to tell him to get lost. Someone also threw up in the women's bathroom sink. I know that this isn't the fault of the business but seriously I just will always remember this place for that. The pro was that when I told one of the bartenders what had happened they had someone clean it up really fast. We had fun here but the experience was a bit hit or miss. We really enjoyed the live music but the crowd was wild. read more

Happened upon this place while roaming the historic district on a recent visit. Street level bar definitely has an EDM/dance club vibe, complete with light show and dance music. Not my style, but it may be yours. A few steps down into the basement, you'll find a different vibe: alt/punk music playing, pool tables, skew ball, shuffle board table. Low key and casual... A couple local beers on tap, which I make a point to enjoy while traveling. Side note: I am absolutely positive that I was the only person there without a tattoo. And there were some pretty epic tattoos on display. read more

Typical hole in the wall, grungy bar. Drinks are served in plastic cups. During the day it's just a regular bar. Our bartender Jess was awesome and gave us a lot of recommendations. At night the vibe changes. It turns into a club, but the DJ is horrible. He's all over the place and clearly has no idea what he's doing. The bartenders nor patrons are wearing masks. The bartenders either can't hear or don't care because instead of a beer she came back over with a vodka cranberry...and couldn't find our open tab.... This place is definitely disorganized and dirty. Don't get me started on the restrooms. If it weren't for Jess this place would get one star. read more

It's both a sports bar and a live band rock bar depending upon when you are there. When a live band rock bar, the musicians are top of the line but deafeningly loud. When operating as a sports bar they have some of the largest bar room viewing screens I've ever seen. The place hops when there is a big game on and on Friday and Saturday live band nights. Otherwise it's kind of dead, rather boring but somewhat comical if you enjoy watching a drunk trying to cheer some football player in rerun of last week's game. LOL! As far as the bar goes, I've found the drinks I've had here to be rather wimpy as far as the booze pour goes and the bartenders lacking in professionalism. You'll either like Barrelhouse South or hate it depending upon whether or not you enjoy watching football in a loud rather ruckus house bar or deafeningly loud but musically accomplished rock bands, particularly so because there is rarely a cover charge. read more

Don't go there unless you want your phone stolen(they especially target women). My friend got her phone stolen went in the next day and the bartender said she was the 6th person that day to ask about her phone getting stolen. I know other people who have had their phones stolen here too so this isn't a one night occurrence but does seem to only happen at this bar. When we asked to see their security footage, the bartender replied "no it's not my job to make sure that you don't lose your sh**. I always keep track of my sh**". Incredibly rude and insensitive. Excellent tacos of many varieties even into the wee hours. Chorizo Mexican sausage is my jam. Friendly bartenders who dance with the crowd. It gets packed on Friday and Saturday night when there's a band playing. The weekend bands are regional or national acts that play 50-70% cover songs, often with a unique instrument or theme. Sunday is the perfect size crowd with lots of music and a DJ. read more

I am a 23-year-old from Michigan. The bouncer refused to let me in. I offered him cards(including my physical ID), social media, and a scanned copy of my passport to verify my identity. He continued to turn me away and I when I asked what was wrong he repeatedly told me to have a good night and push me away from the door. Absolutely would not recommend I was attending with an entirely out of state wedding party and I was the only bridesmaid who was refused entry (also the only bridesmaid from the Midwest). Very frustrated and defeated. Not worth waiting to get into incredibly rude bouncers. Got thrown out for "following girls around" by the security guy with all the arm tats. First off I'm gay and second those girls I was "following" were in fact my roommates and friends that I had came into the bar with. Upon explaining all of this to him and my friends, again the "girls" I was following, backing me up, he continued to yell at me and grab me. Before this we watched him throw out all the non-white people from the bar, including one woman who was out for her birthday. To say this felt a bit pointed was an understatement. I am not a Savannah resident and was traveling in and many of the other bars were much more welcoming and accepting. This was not the energy here at all. If you want a bar that fits into the conservative south stereotypes than this is it, but if you're wanting to be in a much more chill and accepting place I'd recommend the Treehouse! read more

I'm adding a new review on barrelhouse simply because of the monstrosity that is Eclipse which just opened next door. Eclipse charged me $17 for a double crown, and i was in disbelief. After paying my tab, I went to barrelhouse and ordered the SAME exact drink and was charged less than half of what eclipse charged me. Eclipse is a brand new bar, which scares me because now I'm anticipating that every new bar downtown is gonna have outrageous prices for nothing substantial in return regarding ambiance or vibes in general (for lack of a better word lmao). Barrelhouse stays consistent though and stays traditional to the dive scene in downtown savannah. The family that works there never changes and there's never anything new to "get used to." Barrel is traditional and reasonably priced and houses the best music in all of downtown. Long live barrel. I hope to god this place NEVER changes in reaction to the b***sh*t that is now starting to surface downtown. Barrel, stay true to you and keep making us locals (AND tourists) happy. The lack of respect and professionalism I experienced while here is inexcusable. First impressions matter and respect goes a long way with me. As I was paying for my drink the bartender thought it would be a good idea to fling my card back at me instead of simply handing it to me or at the very least setting it back on the counter. I didn't say anything but my facial expression spoke volumes. He then try's to explain that he was "trying to throw it into my hand".
