A true gem in Savannah! This basement speakeasy bar has a very cool vibe, great music, a friendly staff, and a highly unique menu. The menu itself is designed in the form of an old newspaper and features an incredibly diverse selection of cocktails. I love how it is cleverly divided into Vegas-style games to display all of the different drink choices! This is by far one of the most unique speakeasy-type bars I have ever been to. Oh man this review is going to make me sound old but here it goes. I liked everything about this bar except how high the have the music. It seemed to be a bar not a club so while sitting at a table having a drink I was not sure why the music was crazy. We wanted to be able to have a conversation with our drinks and the vibe matched that but not the level or style of music being played. We wanted to stay for a few drinks but ended up just having one (which was excellent) and then leaving. I also want to note that it was early evening and not late night. read more

Tucked away in an alley, hence the name. Very busy on a Friday night. We came in for a quick drink before another reservation we had that night. When you walk in the door you go down the stairs to gain access. They were almost at max capacity when we came at 9pm but luckily there were 2 open spots at the bar we were able to sit at. You know most of my reviews have been from New York. It's the city of my heart. It's my home. I think it's the greatest city in the world. But I had the best cocktail I've had in a looooooong time at The Alley Cat Lounge in Savannah. I ended up at Alley Cat because I saw their very cool "Alley Cat Rag," which is their menu, but with the coolest and most fun twist: it's set up like a newspaper, with gossip, personal ads, and classifieds. It did not disappoint! My first drink was "Hole in the Sand," made with vodka, pineapple, guava, cuke, and strawberry absinthe. This is the cocktail I referenced as the best I've had in recent memory, and that's saying something. It was fruity and refreshing, but not too sweet. It was smooth and the absinthe was so subtle, it added to the complexity of the drink without overpowering it. The next I had was my second favorite: the Botanivore, made with the gin of the same name, pineapple, herbal liqeur, pineapple, red bay syrup, celery, and cucumber. The celery added just a bit of savory for a well balanced drink. I also had the go-go agave, advertised under a personal ad about go-go dancer wanted, "must be exotic, hot, and not too sweet." If you haven't figured it out, the ads describe the drinks. This drink was made with mezcal, gochujang, goji berry, lime, and hibiscus. As a snack, I had their mushroom slider with gruyere, and it was AHHH-MAAH-ZING! And again, best bar snack I've had in a long time. Gooey, cheesy, savory, bun toasted just right. This spot has several sophisticated bar snacks, and several other types of cocktails, including whiskey cocktails and simpler drinks. They also seem to be whiskey connoisseurs, as they served some whiskey-seeking patrons flights of various high end variety. The staff were laid back, approachable, cool. They offered group shots because things were laid back and there were some employees on site. The surroundings are dark, moody, velvety. The bar is actually very comfortable, with shorter chairs and a high foot rest, so people who are short and wide like me can sit comfortably. I will definitely be back. Again and again! read more

This was on our list of bars to check out and it ended up being the perfect place to land during a thunderstorm. The bar is located in an alley downstairs with no windows so you can really get lost in your own time. The menus are newspapers which really beautiful art work and clear but unique descriptions of the drinks. Our bartender was really nice and friendly and answered a lot of our questions. He even made something off menu based on our specific taste preference. Both our drinks were so good and felt very strong. I also got the cheese straws - they paired nicely with the drinks, something different and local. The cheese straws were nice and crispy and also had a slight kick to it. I loved that they also projected a movie onto the wall but it wasn't so loud that it interrupted your own conversations. I would highly recommend you check out this spot. read more

This place is in an alley... duh it's called alley cat! Uber was able to drop us off right at the same time. You walk down a set of stairs to a dark bar. Bartender Teresa was so nice and welcoming. She helped me choose between three cocktails. I went with the La Petite Mort. Sparkling forward it was so refreshing and great!! My husband got the Bordeaux blanc by the glass. The menu is printed on a newspaper and changes seasonally/3 x a year. They have two unisex bathrooms right where you enter downstairs. The bar has about 20 chairs and then they have small tables all around. The good people watching spots are three recessed booths in the back. The highlight of this entire place was Teresa though. Probably the best bartender in Savannah. Attentive, knowledgeable and a great mixologist. I can't wait to try her cocktails in the new menu! read more

Ambiance in this lounge is incredibly - dimly lit and cozy, but enough seating for the whole crew. We showed up with around 10 ladies for a valentines night and only had to wait about 15 minutes to be seated- this was a win in my eyes for such a large group! The bouncer was kind and funny, and our waiter was super friendly and helpful. Our drinks came out rather quick despite a busy dining room. Quite possibly one of the coolest bars in the area. Just outside a side alley is the entry way to the downstairs escape. Enjoy great music over the speakers that fill the room but isn't overly loud. This was the last last stop on our pub crawl and it was a pretty cool vibe, probably the closest thing I imagine to a "real" speakeasy. Service was very slowly provided by an apathetic and unshaven young hipster. His lack of anything resembling a personality was the only thing that kept this from being a 5 star review. We started with some of the most amazing tater tots either of us had ever had and then a couple of drinks from their awe inspiring menu. In addition to the cocktails scattered throughout, there's a huge double page spread of their proffered booze at great prices. Service could use improving! Went on a Wednesday night to the Alley Cat Lounge not busy, just me and my friend and one other couple. A woman and a man were manning the bar and tables. Waited 10, minutes before anyone approached our table. Ordered a wine and a beer which took a long time to come to the table especially since there was only one other couple at a nearby table playing cards. When we asked about our drinks the male server brought them over and told us to just relax he was making drinks for other people. They only had two other people and two bartenders. The woman who behind the bar was brushing her hair with a hairbrush most of the time we waited for our drinks! Yes, brushing her hair, where drinks were being prepared. The two servers seemed to be more interested in complaining about their working conditions and had been feeling overwhelmed with their workload they have recently experienced. The woman used the f-word many times to describe how she felt about her workplace conditions. The two of them had been talking so loudly that their conversation had been heard in the empty bar and this banter back and forth went on the whole 45 minutes we were there. Space is limited inside so we had to wait for 15 to 20 minutes upon going downstairs to the basement, we entered a room with small tables, low lighting and full of people. Their menu looks like a newspaper with a lot of ads, but each ad is actually a menu item. I understand the menu changes every few months and the look of the menu itself changes as well. It was really fun to go through the several pages of the menu. The drinks were good too! They make them STRONG--must have a designated driver! Lol. However, the price was quite expensive at around $18 per drink. We were somewhat disappointed that the price for non-alcoholic versions of their drinks were the same price. Will we come back? When the drink came, I wasn't expecting it to taste like very very strong anise and licorice. Wasn't a big fan of it. A bit overpowering.
