After visiting my favorite salon nearby and after a great discussion on sourdough with the salon owners, I decided to visit Barrio Bread. I live on the other side of town so this is a special treat to visit Barrio especially in the morning! I arrived around 11:40 and I was surprised to see a line. But I really shouldn't have been surprised, this bread maker and his business is unique and very special to Tucson. By the time I arrived to the front door, there was only one cart left of bread with about 6-7 different breads but the quantities were very few. I was lucky to purchase a loaf of the historic Heritage bread and I wanted to try the community bread that was suggested to me by my friend Justin. I also decided to purchase the bread flour after a brief discussion with Mr. Guerra. I have a sourdough starter I recently woke up from my fridge and really wanted to incorporate a local flour. The white Sonoran wheat is delicious and incredibly nutritious, so why not! FYI Barrio Bread is a unique small store front. It serves its purpose to sell his products. I had a wonderful experience and will return when I want incredible flavorful bread! The community loaf was delicious!!

So there may be a line. I arrived a few minutes after opening at 9 AM. I got in later than planned. I've had the bread before, but not from the actual bakery. It probably took me 20 minutes to make it to the front of the line. They keep water and umbrellas for sun protection near the door if needed. Yes this place deserves the accolades. Don Guerra, owner/ baker, was working the register. He was super friendly and gracious. The variety of bread they offer was excellent. I ordered the cranberry walnut, small baguette, and a quarter whole grain spelt. All of the breads were excellent. The business is clean and well organized, but only a few customers in the store per time. Definitely buy/eat their bread.

First time coming here, I read so much good things about it. And we are looking for a good bakery. My husband is Italian and love bread more than anything. We tried a few different bakeries before, but were not satisfied. Kidding aside, it was love at first bite! Lol! This will be our go to place when it comes to good bread! No wonder lines form here, we just got lucky they still have some when we get there. Staff are super friendly and helpful and we saw the famous baker and he's very friendly. I love this place already!

Already visited 3x in the last month, every bread here is fantastic. The baguettes are so soft and chewy, and the daily special selections are amazing. Will be back to try every bread in their selection!!! 10/10

This is a local Tucson staple, so be sure to go early in the morning when they first open! Yes, there will probably be a line but the bread is worth the wait. If you arrive mid-day you run the risk of the shop being sold out of many of the different bread varieties. Excellent fresh bread, lots of different options, and it was nice to see the owner working the register on a Saturday morning.

We arrived at Barrio Bread right when they opened at 9AM on a Friday morning and found already 20 people in line waiting to pick up bread. Luckily the line moved pretty fast and we were in front within 15 minutes. So many breads to choose from! We had to narrow it down to only three which was still way too much bread for us! Demi Baguette ($3.50) - This is a great baguette. The outer shell has the perfect crust and the inside has quite a dense crumb. The flavor is very developed, you can tell the care and time that went into this baguette. It has a bit of a sourish quality, like a quarter of the way to being sourdough. Focaccia, Marinara and Cheese ($6.00) - This is a good focaccia, not too greasy or oily, with a nice tomato sauce and cheese generously applied and additional herbs sprinkled on top. The flour/grain mixture they use is less dense here, so it does have that lighter crumb more typical of focaccia but still more dense than other focaccias I've had. Locavor Half ($12.50) - Holy moley, this bread is super heavy. When I picked up the bag, I was like - no way a half loaf of bread could weigh this much. The bread once again has a perfect crust. The crumb is moist, dense, with an almost grainy/bran quality and sourdough taste. There's a reason why the owner won a James Beard award. The bread is absolutely fantastic, imaginative, and equally delicious. I highly recommend a stop if you're in Tucson.

AH-MAZ-ING! My mother and a dear friend are both gluten intolerant. After doing some research we struck upon the idea of trying Einkorn wheat bread...which is available locally at Bario Bread! It has a delicious sourdough flavor and delightfully chewy texture. Very satisfying for us carboholics. Our second visit yielded rosemary foccacia which was equally delicious as well as generous samples of cranberry walnut bread. YUMMY! All the bread they make is sourdough cultured from local yeast and is highly digestible. The baker (owner?) Don was kind enough to give us a small jar of starter and a basic recipe so we can try to bake some at home. We can't wait to get back there for our next gastronomic exploration. read more

This place is right around the corner from my work and it NEVER gets old! One of my favorites it the cranberry walnut. The walnuts are soft and fresh along with the cranberry which have the perfect amount of sweetness. My second favorite which is only available on Saturdays is the jalapeño cheddar bread. I take that back those two are my favorite. The jalapeños are fresh and spicy with chunks (yes chunks)of cheddar cheese! The bread in there is a win no matter what you get though. We like to pop in randomly and just try new loafs because they are all worth it. If you aren't sure you want to spend a little extra on good home made bread they sell these little pan birote breads at the register for like a $1. I promise you will be sad though if that's all you get. You will have left wishing you bought more so yes buy one of those for the road and a loaf or more of your choice. read more

OMG the bread (all of them) simply delicious....today picked up Raisin cinnamon and sesame whole wheat-can hardly wait to get home and cut off a big piece to enjoy with a tall glass of milk. Staff courteous, efficient and friendly-store clean, bright-smell of bread baking-just draws you in....nice to see folks standing in line for bread....buy local-love that you can view the bread going into the ovens....and all the bread stacked on bread racks ready for you to purchase. read more

Terrific place, I've known some of the staff for years and they are great people who pour their heart and soul into making each loaf. I highly recommend getting their focaccia on Fridays. By far the best bread in town! A great selection. Barrio may cost a bit more, but it is worth the price. The cranberry-walnut toasted goes great with a cup of coffee, and the baguette is perfect for delicious sandwiches. Can't wait to try other selections. read more

I am french. I love bread. Good bread. Don's bread is... perfect! Well balanced, fresh to the taste. Crunchy, the way we like it in France. The baguettes and the demi-baguettes are pairing wonderfully with a great dry sausage. The wonderful french trio.... wine-cheese (or saucisson)-and a wonderful tranche de pain! Don, you are a genius! Do not use the yelp map. It will take you into the housing neighborhood just south of the bakery. it's across from the Falora and sushi garden. It's pricey bread .You will be out about 14 bucks as it's hard to leave with just one loaf. But I can say this bread is crazy good. Crunch, chew, earthiness, dense, and it complements a bowl of home made minestrone soup. If you are sourdough lovers this guy knows his stuff. I feel sorry for gluten free people. I'm a rare native from San Francisco which is reputed to have the best sourdough bread on the planet, and is almost impossible to duplicate anywhere else. While on vacation, I spied the Barrio Bread stand at an outdoor Farmer's market and bought a loaf of the sourdough bread. The bread was OUT OF THIS WORLD! The crusty crust was perfect, and the chewy sourdough inside dazzled my tastebuds with joy! One does know what they're missing until you try the breads. The only regret is that I have to go hoe tomorrow but will be doing two things. 1-stop by in the morning to bring a few loaves home, 2-I will be back! read more

Amazing bread baked by a man who cares about his community. Be prepared to buy two loaves -- it's that good. The cranberry walnut is especially nice and has toasted nuts. His loaves have a crisp crust and chewy interior. Both times I've been to the shop there's a line out the door, but it goes quickly and the other customers are friendly. You can't go wrong -- every loaf is wonderful. Highly recommended. read more

The bread baked by Don Guerra of Barrio Bread Company in Tucson, AZ is fantastic. He is at Plaza Palomino every Saturday. More than half of the breads are reserved in advance by his growing fan club. Check out the website and get yourself some of the best artisanal bread we have ever eaten. The baguettes, epis, ciabatta, whole wheat, etc etc. My mouth is watering just thinking about it. Can't wait till next Saturday. read more

Hands down the best bread in Tucson, quite possibly the State. Don is a great guy. I had just about given up on finding decent bread in Tucson. Friends would bring bread from back east, although it never holds up well in travel. Don's bread is comparable to the great bread bakeries back east. Hard crust, earthy, flavorful. If there were 6 stars, Barrio Bread would still get ALL the stars. Best bread in Tucson, bar none. This is what real bread tastes like, feels like in your mouth. Your bread is gift quality, Don. Bring a loaf of his bread to a friend's instead of a bottle of wine sometime! I sometimes wish there was an actual store where I could go anytime and buy it, but frankly it is more special to have to go get it on a certain day at a certain time. And sometimes you're just too late, it is so popular. Just keep making it and I'll keep buying it. read more

Picked up two loaves of Olive bread yesterday before Don took a well deserved long weekend off for a family vacation. They sold out very early last Saturday. All I can say is: this is the only bread worth eating. I freeze what I can't eat and I now prioritize early arrival at least once a week. read more

Yeah, this is great bread. clean ingredients and lots of love are a good recipe. I keep shearing this bread with friends and everybody just loves it. You might think is the free bread they are liking but it is not. The bread has just the right amount of crunchiness in the crust and a soft and flavor full center. You cannot go wrong and will not regret trying this bread. Thank you Don for sharing your gift with Tucson (and some Phoenix friends I have shared it with too). This is such a cute little spot with an adorable French/European desert themed motif, I really appreciated!

I think it must have been mixed into their glaze they use, because it was so light, but still flavorful. The strawberries on top of chef kiss and the perfect way to top it off! I had been meaning to make it over here for so long and thanks to a Yelp event, I finally did. The building is so cute (pink everywhere!) with lots of outside seating and a few spots on the inside as well. It's a separate inside sitting area from where you order and in addition to the cinnamon rolls, they also had decorated two cakes, and some animal shaped cookies. As you see, the cinnamon rolls, got my attention. I proud to definitely be back!

It's good bread no doubt but if you know you'd have to wait 20 min in line just to get in and realize nothing is left than why not make more bread?? The cost for making more bread is cents literally, it's like making another cup of coffee ... Nothing wrong with the taste of the quality just disappointing that it feels like a waste of time to go there sometimes read more
