Wow! It is a rarity that I get on Yelp and have a five-star review to leave. Barrio Bread deserves it. Don't let the line keep you from waiting to get some of their delicious breads. From the courtesy umbrellas out front to shield waiting customers from the sun to the genuine (who I'm guessing was the) shop owner, the customer experience was truly top notch. Even with the line, the owner took time to explain the breads and make recommendations based on our tastes. I came to Tucson from Alabama and had heard all the way from there that Barrio Bread was a must-stop place. The word was right! We tried several breads, but the signature sourdough took the cake for me. After visiting my favorite salon nearby and after a great discussion on sourdough with the salon owners, I decided to visit Barrio Bread. I live on the other side of town so this is a special treat to visit Barrio especially in the morning! I arrived around 11:40 and I was surprised to see a line. But I really shouldn't have been surprised, this bread maker and his business is unique and very special to Tucson. By the time I arrived to the front door, there was only one cart left of bread with about 6-7 different breads but the quantities were very few. I was lucky to purchase a loaf of the historic Heritage bread and I wanted to try the community bread that was suggested to me by my friend Justin. I also decided to purchase the bread flour after a brief discussion with Mr. Guerra. I have a sourdough starter I recently woke up from my fridge and really wanted to incorporate a local flour. The white Sonoran wheat is delicious and incredibly nutritious, so why not! FYI Barrio Bread is a unique small store front. It serves its purpose to sell his products. I had a wonderful experience and will return when I want incredible flavorful bread! The community loaf was delicious!! read more

The bread here is as good as I heard it was. A nice selection of different breads, foccacias and bagels to choose from, generally ranging around $7-8.50 for hearty loaves. The texture of the bread is wonderful, spongy and airy at the same time, with lots of flavor. The heritage loaf is my favorite, both for the appearance (with a cactus etched on in what I assume is flour), to the multigrainy depth. Staff is always quick and kind and this is a fun place to support! read more

So there may be a line. I arrived a few minutes after opening at 9 AM. I got in later than planned. I've had the bread before, but not from the actual bakery. It probably took me 20 minutes to make it to the front of the line. They keep water and umbrellas for sun protection near the door if needed. Yes this place deserves the accolades. Don Guerra, owner/ baker, was working the register. He was super friendly and gracious. The variety of bread they offer was excellent. I ordered the cranberry walnut, small baguette, and a quarter whole grain spelt. All of the breads were excellent. The business is clean and well organized, but only a few customers in the store per time. Definitely buy/eat their bread. read more

This place is a must if you love fresh, handmade bread. Honestly, it's the best bread I've had on this continent--no exaggeration. We went on a Saturday right after they opened and waited about 20 minutes, but depending on the time and day, the line can stretch to 45 minutes. It's worth it, I promise. Just be prepared--the line is outside and there's no shade, so if you're visiting in the summer, grab one of the umbrellas they leave by the door. Be sure to check their website before you go to see what's available that day and plan ahead--some items sell out quickly. We got the jalapeño cheddar loaf and the Pain au Levain, and both were absolutely amazing. What makes this place even more special is the vibe. It's locally owned, the staff is incredibly kind, and they sometimes offer free sourdough starter if they have extra. First time coming here, I read so much good things about it. And we are looking for a good bakery. My husband is Italian and love bread more than anything. We tried a few different bakeries before, but were not satisfied. Kidding aside, it was love at first bite! Lol! This will be our go to place when it comes to good bread! One of the best baguettes I have ever had, also one of the longest lasting (I have had the bread for 5 days and it has just started to get hard but not yet stale). Yes, there is a line, but it went by pretty fast and I enjoyed chatting with the folks in front and behind us, all of us visiting from a different state. I love the fact that the bakery uses local heirloom flours and work with local farmers. They also use freshly milled grain and slow fermentation. I can't wait to try their polish rye and some of their other world breads. I bought the rosemary salt bagels, baguette and froze the heritage and cranberry walnut breads for later. We arrived at Barrio Bread right when they opened at 9AM on a Friday morning and found already 20 people in line waiting to pick up bread. Luckily the line moved pretty fast and we were in front within 15 minutes. So many breads to choose from! We had to narrow it down to only three which was still way too much bread for us! Demi Baguette ($3.50) - This is a great baguette. The outer shell has the perfect crust and the inside has quite a dense crumb. The flavor is very developed, you can tell the care and time that went into this baguette. It has a bit of a sourish quality, like a quarter of the way to being sourdough. Focaccia, Marinara and Cheese ($6.00) - This is a good focaccia, not too greasy or oily, with a nice tomato sauce and cheese generously applied and additional herbs sprinkled on top. The flour/grain mixture they use is less dense here, so it does have that lighter crumb more typical of focaccia but still more dense than other focaccias I've had. Locavor Half ($12.50) - Holy moley, this bread is super heavy. When I picked up the bag, I was like - no way a half loaf of bread could weigh this much. The bread once again has a perfect crust. The crumb is moist, dense, with an almost grainy/bran quality and sourdough taste. There's a reason why the owner won a James Beard award. The bread is absolutely fantastic, imaginative, and equally delicious. I highly recommend a stop if you're in Tucson. read more

I have found that sometimes what one would call just a bread shop has a ton of history behind it with an incredible story of someone who decided to follow his dreams. Below is an accounting of that story which came to life. So, grab your coffee, sit back and enjoy an accounting of Don Guerra's story as I know it. "IN 2009, DON GUERRA WAS a grade-school teacher with a yearning for bread. He had previously given up the baking life for grad school. But almost a decade into his teaching career, Guerra longed for the feeling of dough in his hands. So he did what many a fledgling founder does: He set up shop in his garage. His first customers and supporters were his neighbors. It's this rootedness in community that motivated Guerra to name his bakery Barrio, after the Spanish word for "neighborhood." Like the bakery's origins, Guerra's ingredients are rooted in the community. While his lineup includes traditional European loaves familiar to Great British Bake Off fans, such as olive fougasse, the grains are largely local, either wheats that have learned to thrive in the arid Arizona desert after centuries of adaptation, or native plants. Guerra's most famous loaves are evidence of this fusion. His Saturday morning Barrio Mesquite loaf, made with wheat and mesquite flour, bears the spicy taste of the desert. His Pan de Kino, meanwhile, is made with White Sonora, a desert-adapted heritage wheat introduced to southern Arizona in the late 1600s by a Spanish missionary, which is grown especially for Barrio by a local farm. Great sourdough bakery. This was my first visit. We ordered 2 loaves of their Heritage sourdough bread which is a darker brown color. Very good sourdough flavor. Also ordered 1 loaf of their sourdough olive bread which was also good. And 2 bagels. The bagels were tasty but tough. I would prefer a softer texture for the bagels. What a gem! truly a special place that I was happy to stumble upon! We stopped and took notice because a woman brought a lawn chair and a book and set up an umbrella... all of which sparked our interest since we're new to town. We notice the signs... best bread awards which intrigued us more but it was ungodly hot out! But this wonderfully kind woman mentioned to us to grab the umbrellas the bakery puts out while the line forms; that it was worth the wait and it'd make it more bareable. We felt inspired and since we had time and were thereto stick around and boy we weren't disappointed! The line formed about 25 deep and counting; it confirmed our good timing and the hype. When it was our turn we're instructed to come in in a sort of pairs and low grouping since they don't have much space inside, and to close the door to keep the air conditioning inside... PLEASE close the door quickly behind you; it's a kindness for everyone involved. Next we were whisked away in our mind by the smell of all the fresh baked breads! We got the heritage and some special flour to take home. It was divine really a stellar loaf ! I will say, though I hate to be that guy a bit but that was no bagel ... if it was marketed as a Rosemary Round I'd have applauded and said well done, it's a nice sort of round bread. But it wasn't hitting any sort of mark for any bagel I've ever seen (and I've seen a lot whew! Even store bought it's like that. Now, I'm not saying it's bad! I'm just saying it's misleading... I ordered it with tampered expectations knowing it's not like east coast, and that's fine! But it was like apples and oranges; yeah both fruits that's about it. As a rosemary bread in a round shape it was tasty but that'd be my only sort of complaint. It's worth the line, worth the wait. The staff was nice and you cant get fresher. I'd love to come back and try other breads they make and make a great sandwich! Definitely see why they win awards! Go! It's worth the line! And be sure to bring or use their umbrella if it's hot! Without a doubt, this is one of the best bakeries in town. I don't know how much more I need to write about this place but, they are so friendly and the bread is out of this world. My personal favorites are the cinnamon raisin and the apricot cranberry. Those are only sold on certain days so make sure you look at their daily bread menu. If you go here for bread be prepared to wait in line for a long time. The line usually forms a little bit before they open and usually dies down around an hour and a half. read more

Barrio Bread is the absolute best. When we left out an unfinished loaf on the counter and the dog ate it, I almost cried. It's that good. The grains are local and the loaves are just amazing. The cranberry walnut is probably my favorite but you can't really go wrong with any flavors. I took Don's online sourdough course and was able to get a small cup of starter. Unfortunately (or fortunately) the starter died so it's back to buying more loaves of Barrio bread. The location isn't convenient for me so I really wish they had another location in town. We are always on the hunt for local and family run businesses. First tried Don's bread at his Tucson location. We're heading there now so what better time for a review then now. He recently started selling his bread in Gilbert a few miles from our house which we've been going to weekly. See review for that location. He is a 2022 James Beard award winner. He is also a local as he grew up in Arizona. From his website- "Don is committed to working with local farmers, chefs, and other food producers to strengthen the local grain economy and grow the local food network. In 2015 he was awarded a USDA Local Food Promotion Grant that significantly helped him to increase collaboration with others and expand production with a new bakery." Few lines are worth waiting in, but the line at Barrio Bread is absolutely worthwhile, so be sure to stop here early in the AM, when visiting Tuscon. The first day we tried to come here two hours before closing, and they were already completely sold out for the day. The next day we arrived in the am to a line out 30 people deep, that moved fairly quickly, but expect to spend about 20-30 minutes minimum waiting for bread. Is it worth it? It is. We got several loaves: their fruit loaf, a multigrain heritage loaf, some olive oil and salt focaccia and my absolute favorite a small sized chewy Cuban roll warm from the oven and covered in sesame seeds. The sesame Cuban roll was so delicious, it reminded me of my favorite Montreal bagel at St. Viateur's, perfectly fresh, warm from the oven and chewy. read more
