Visiting from Cali and have yet to find a place near me that sells pan as cheap and tasty as La Estrella. And all my faves too, they even have my beloved cuernito. The bread was so fresh, the perfect balance between dense and fluffy and so sweet. The puerquitos were pretty good too. Truth be told, I'm not a big concha lover but I had two of theirs on our seven hour car ride back to Cali because they were just that good. During my childhood this building was known as El Rio bakery. When the family decided to close it, many worried it would be a empty building. I think it was terrific that La Estrella decided to move in for another location. I am unsure how many years they have been here but it is always special to walk into a bakery that has its own space. They had lots to offer; tortillas of course, fresh bread, and lots of Mexican bakery delights! Today I felt like empanadas instead of pan de huevo, which many now call conchas. Cochitos (pig shaped molasses cookies) are our favorite. But you never can go wrong with their glazed donuts. So many delights to explore but today was a great day to visit Estrella bakery after walking and visiting with vendors at the Tucson organic garden plant sale today. read more

La Estrella has a quality selection of glutenous goods, with plenty of Mexican and American. What I loved: This is lowkey the best donut shop I've been to in Tucson. I started off with a bite of a plain, sugared donut and it had the perfect amount of density and chewiness. I tried the cinnamon roll as well and it was absolutely perfect--lightly glazed so it wasn't too sweet, and a bit moist with heaping cinnamon right in the middle. What I liked: The conchas were enjoyable, and there were some larger items that looked incredibly rich--like the danishes, or even slices of cake. One of the best bakeries I've visited offers conchas that are incredibly soft and spongy, almost like marshmallow heaven in your mouth. The service is both fast and friendly. This is Estrella's third store jn town. My Neighbor shop was previously at the mercado San Agustin, but I prefer this one now because it's away from the crowded MSA and there more room to walk inside and view the pastries. This shop actually is now the bakery that supplies the items for the MSA store. The kitchen looks really big! You can expect all of the same baked goods at all the locations. My favorite is the hebilla (belt buckle shaped bread). I also love the cuernos and their Mexican wedding cookies. If you need a large order they are supper accommodating. You just need to give them 24 Hours notices. They also make mini sizes upon request! read more

Hate to leave a 1 star at a child hood shop of mines but there was a male and women probably in the 30s. The guy was rushing me and my friend, I didn't even get to think or take a second he was just staring at me like if he wanted me to hurry and choose when there was no one in line ! The women didn't even acknowledge us when paying she just took our card ran it and kept talking to her coworker. We said thank you and no response nor a "have a good day". I'm a Tucson native and I've gone to Estrella for a long time. I've liked Estrella for a long time. I went today and got a pumpkin empanda and was shocked at how small they are now. I was like what is this? Anyway it's not the size that bothered me as I've had good small empanadas before... Never in my life have a had a pumpkin empanada this bad. It was bitter or something it just tasted really really off - like rotten. I'm not sure but it triggered me to spit it out. I'm not picky either, it was weird. I'm not sure who decided to change the recipe but it's pure nasty now. I would absolutely not recommend this to even my enemy lol. My dad ate his and is still alive but he said it tasted weird too. I got mexican wedding cake cookies and they were edible but not good and were dry. New ownership? New recipes? Not sure but ew. read more

I've come back twice since my first review and both times got their cochito. Although not "traditional" it's pretty good. It's a basic and cheap $1 cochito that has been the exact same on two separate visits, which is to say the inconsistency issue I noted before appears to be addressed with a standardized cochito recipe. Good. Also both times I came in there was one person at the counter, not many, and the exchange was subtle and quick. Which again is a good improvement. Good job. I will be back at a later time to assess the jelly rolls, conchas, etc. read more

They also sell fresh made tortillas, too! Service is prompt and friendly. We come here after hiking Tumamoc on Sundays. Stopped by just to grab a couple of conchas and I can say that the conchas are some of the best I've had. It was perfectly soft but dense enough and there was just the right amount of sugar on top for me personally. Very flavorful and not at all bland.
