We are big Mexican food fans so it was only a matter of time that we venture out towards Wahiawa to check this place out. Arrived a little after 9am on a Saturday, the small parking lot was already full. We managed to find some street parking less than a block away. These guys are located next to Kilani bakery, the outside is painted a bright green so surely you can't miss it. Seat yourself upon entering, water cups and menus provided quickly. Neat artwork on the walls gives you some eye candy while you wait for your meal. Burria loco moco don't disappoint. Eggs were cooked just as I asked, portion is perfect. Birria meat was juicy & plentiful. Our server, Francis was friendly and attentive. She joked back with us as my jokester husband made a few remarks about having to eat rice (he's dieting but never when it comes to Mexican food). Small oversight made on our order was quickly & satisfactorily rectified. They also sell various salsa and dips in their cold case display next to the register. Definitely worth the walk back to our car!!
Requested Huevos rancheros for takeaway. It's been awhile since I've been to Barrio Cafe on Kilani Ave in Wahiawa...I don't have a reason to come here usually, but visited on a whim...since I have the day off. If the Huevos rancheros isn't good, can't call yourself a Mexican restaurant. Solid if not spectacular. Cal-Mex style of cuisine...fine by me. Service is friendly and quick. Three stalls are available for parking.
Small spot located in Wahiawa. Parking is not the greatest. The service is good and the ambiance is a home feel. I got the steak and eggs breakfast burrito and by far it is one of the best in the area. Everything is cooked fresh and the burrito put me to sleep. I give it a 5/5. Cooked to perfection and flavorful The horchata iced coffee is on point. Perfect balance of coffee and sweetness.
I moved to Hawaii a little over a year ago from Southern California, and the most common agreement I'll have with others who moved here from SoCal is: "Hawaii is incredible... But it's hard to find good Mexican food here." I tend to always forget to take photos before I dive in, so what's not pictured are the carne asada street taco and the Cali Burrito (ordered with no fries) that the hubs got. Let's be real - we didn't have high expectations; (come on, there's other cuisines Hawai'i is known for, but Mexican isn't on the top of the list). However, we polished everything we ordered at Barrio Cafe. This small hole in wall spot had great service and the best Mexican food we've had since landing in Oahu. I'd rate it five stars for Mexican on the island but gotta admit it's not quite what we're used to in SoCal so knocking one star. We'll definitely be back when craving home.
Such a cute shop, open lay out and you can see the kitchen. I just wished they played a bit more Hispanic music but not really a big deal. I definitely recommend coming here and trying their machaca burrito. I found out about this little place by going to green world coffee farm and ordering a machaca burrito. It's amazing along with the red salsa literally chefs kiss. It's so flavorful and I couldn't get enough of it which is why I came here the very next day. The guy that greeted me when I first walked in was super attentive and helpful. I did order the tripleta torta; for me it was a bit much and I wish I would've stuck with the Machaca burrito. You do get a huge torta to start with for me it was a bit much, I feel like with all three meats the chicken, ham and steak the chicken gets lost when you take a bite of the torta. Regardless this is now on the top of my list for Mexican breakfast/lunch.
Cute little cafe in Wahiawa that has like 6 tables. Popular local spot for breakfast and lunch. Staff is friendly and the kitchen is visible from the dining area. The owner is all about using local ingredients and offers quite a few fusion dishes. She also makes her own vegan chorizo in house that is really yummy in the street tacos. Definitely recommend!
Decent food for the location. If you're in a rush, this place can get you fed quick. Flavors are good, but not quite our cup of tea. Birria was just shredded beef in lightly grilled tortillas with cheese - additional cost for cheese - not the crunchy, melty, hyped up version you see at other restaurants. My wife didn't really care for it. Carnitas was good, but not anything special. Although, I did enjoy the rice & beans - those had good flavor. Service was fast, but not personable by any means. It felt like a turn-n-burn type of experience. Lastly, the food is served in take-out containers... not my fave while trying to enjoy a dine-in experience. I despise disposable goods and eating with plastic!
Amazing little spot for Mexican food in Wahiawa. Really affordable tacos. Parking is only like 4 spaces. Not much signage to identify it from the congested street, due to street parking in front of entrance it's easy to miss the restaurant name on the windows even if you're looking for it. Open for breakfast and lunch only, breakfast served all day! The horchata is sooooo good!
I love this place! It's been a few years so we stopped in on our way to the Wahiawā Botanical Gardens and I'm glad we did! I got a torta madre on suggestion from the waitress. Yummy! There's beets in it!!!! I absolutely loved it. My gf got a burrito was a bit disappointed in the lack of flavor. Really cool atmosphere. Not the greatest for a bug party because the place is pretty small but we had 6 of us and we were comfy cozy in the corner. The smells from the kitchen just enhance the experience! The wall art is dope!
We needed breakfast before heading to the Dole Plantation, and was pleasantly surprised by this gem of a cafe. It was quiet but the kitchen was busy. We opted for guacamole and chips to start out with and a Horchata iced coffee. Our main courses were the Birra Loco Moco, and the chorizo rice plate.. Both were way beyond our expectations.
Ceviche was really great! They sell in two sizes, half pound or full pound. You can either do fish of the day or shrimp. For the fish and shrimp tacos, they chop up the fish very small, which was nice being bite size, however, I don't think there was very much fish. Loco moco was pretty salty, surprisingly, and not very saucy. Small parking lot out front. More of a to go spot than a sit down place, although there are tables inside.

It's absolutely delicious! this place is located in Wahiawā and you turn on that road that 7-11 is on the corner. You folks should try it out. They close @ 3pm tho. So HURRY UP! I was fortunate to have made it in time! I'm so glad I was able to make it to this event! Aside of what I wrote on top, I wanted to add on about the place and the food. Oh man! If you want authentic Mexican dishes, come HERE!! They're so delicious! There's hardly any places that sells authentic Mexican dishes. The ambience is very colorful and nostalgic. It seems like there's a lot of sentimental memories displayed here. The painting is one of the highlights. As well as the masks. There's so some photos of art decor that was given to the owner to display in the restaurant. Someone a fan of Frida Kalo as well. Beautiful and authentic. The place isn't too big, but they only serve during the day time. I think it because they also have a sister restaurant nearby that serves dinner. So you can go there instead. But if you come here... you have to try out the business next door as well. They serve some moctails made of vinegar & carbonated water. It's really delicious! I LIKE IT! If you don't like vinegar... you won't like this! But if you're ok with some sweet tangy flavors & willing to give it a try... by all means, GO FOR IT! I'll be posting on their site too! So don't you worry. For now this is for Barrio and I will say... THEYRE DELICIOUS! Thank you for the samples & looking forward to you October festival.

Kinda forgot what I ordered but it was considered a "local favorite" and I could taste why! Other person got a breakfast burrito and said that it was delicious! We had some of the french toast that was a churro style and that was pretty good too. Recommend getting Half Churro French Toast (4). Preeeetty good service + reassurance. read more

We've always planned to try this place and when we finally did, we weren't disappointed. The menu is packed with so many different options. I'll be honest and say that I'm not well versed in the names of Mexican food, but anytime I try something, I usually love it. The food here was great! Tasty and filling, which makes sense because the owner of Barrio is also the same owner of our favorite Mexican place, El Palenque! I would say that the food here is a more refined and cultivated style of Mexican food. Definitely need both restaurants to stay for a long time though because I need to have both experiences in my life. Now I need to say that if you visit, it is a MUST to order their Churro French Toast. I'm not exaggerating when I say that it is the absolute best French toast I've ever had in my life. It was HUGE especially for the price it is. I thought it would be small and ordered a burrito, but I was wrong. I couldn't even touch my burrito afterwards. The rice here is THE BEST. I've never had Mexican rice that had soooo much flavor and has the perfect, non-mushy texture. I would be happy just eating this rice for an entire meal. The place is pretty small, but big enough for a sit down meal. It was really cute and unique with the story of the founder/head chef on the back of the menu, the clay pots behind the counter, and all of the unique colorful decorations everywhere. I've never been to Mexico, but I felt like I could actually experience what it would be like in this restaurant. I really liked that most of our food came out in plates/wraps that we could take-out just in case we didn't finish our food. Although, I might be alone in that thought, as some people like to have their meals at sit-down-restaurants on plates. Okay, so the minor downsides; the water cups were in those tiny cups that you use to swish out the paste from your mouth at the dentist's. It's been a really hot summer and I felt bad when the server would keep filling up our 1-sip-cups. We eventually kept getting up to refill them ourselves since there was a water dispenser on the counter. But I really don't think it's fun to keep standing up during a meal. Maybe it's part of the theme? The one food item I didn't care for was the Steak & Eggs made into a burrito. I felt like it was more like a bean and eggs burrito. It didn't feel balanced to me and it felt like it was missing something to really give it that mmm taste. The last thing was that it was kind of confusing how we would pay. I'm so used to getting a check at the table or the server alerting us that we need to pay at the register. I don't mind either, but we kind of just sat there a little confused until we asked how to pay. That's super minor though, and could just be because our server was busy. I get it, I'm not that much of a stickler. read more

I'm so glad we came. Absolutely onolicious. I learned about Barrio Cafe a few nights ago during one of their pop up events where we tried off menu items. And it was so good that I had to come back to try their regular menu. The restaurant is only open from 7 am to 3 pm Mondays - Saturdays. This is a sister location to the original el Palenque on Kam Hwy, also in Wahiawa. So Saturdays are the only days I can come for brunch. At first glance, everything on the menu looks so good so it took a little time to decide. However, ordering the Horchata Iced Coffee didn't take long as I was told by an acquaintance that it's one of her favorite things from Barrio Cafe. And it certainly did not disappoint. I was feeling tired already for a Saturday afternoon but this helped me to perk up and last through shopping the rest of the day. I finally decided on the Chorizo fried rice with two eggs over easy. And I was pleasantly surprised by its simple yet elegant plating on an aluminum serving tray and in a simple aluminum round take out bowl. And I know it makes no sense but it was really pretty, but I'm still gonna eat it. It's like they know you're not gonna finish it and let me help you with preparing it for easy take home consumption. So smart! I've been to Mexico twice and i can understand the difference between authentic Mexican food and commercial US flavor. The flavor reminded me that I had lunch in Rosarita MX once. I completely forgot about that until I started chowing down. After my sister was undecided between shrimp tacos, fish tacos and their variety burrito, our hostess recommended the fish tacos and said, next time you can get the burrito. She knew how good their food is and that we'd be back. Iso my sister decided in the fish tacos. I did take a bite of a taco and it really was tasty. The refried beans, definitely not canned, and the rice made with lime and cilantro, were excellent. Like the pop up event a few nights earlier and this experience, it's all the same, just a lovely time. My sister was involved with looking at everything. She felt everything was as authentic as can be. We look forward to visiting in the future and bringing family along to enjoy this well known neighborhood gem in Wahiawa. read more

The carnitas was very flavorful and burrito was filled with meat! I don't like rice in my burrito so I got it without. I think it's a great value for delicious food and will return when I'm in the area. read more

I absolutely love this place. It's so crazy I would have never knew this place existed if it were for my friend and im so glad she did because the food is beyond amazing. I had the Barrio Krazy Fries. They were so good and so flavorful. It was really big too I couldn't finish it so I have leftovers. The waitress and staff were so nice and friendly it's just a family owned restaurant and I love supporting the local community. They have a great menu. It's a small restaurant so our huge friend group filled up the whole restaurant. Parking is limited so just make sure you park in designated areas of find good street parking. Barrio is so good and I'm so excited to share it with all my friends. read more

Our most favorite place to eat fresh and locally sourced food!! If you are ever on your way to the North Shore or near the Wahiawa area, you must stop by!! We are obsessed with the Barrio salad and the cucumber lime drink !!! My personal go to breakfast meal is the Mexi loco moco! The mexican style rice is also killers!!!! Just modern, clean, delicious food!! read more

Food was great but a little on the salty side (and I love salt!) I had the burrito mixed with steak, chicken and shrimp. Service was great. Ambiance was great. Little dive. I would come back. read more

A friend knew we headed to Wahiawa and sighed we lunch at Barrio. Glad we did!! Small place with seating for 20 at most. We were greeted immediately by the host/server/cashier. He was awesome! Immediately brought water and checked on us and refilled water regularly. Loved the decor on a background of purple and mauve - cool assortment of Lucha Libre masks and assorted Mexican art. But the food was the star! Started with chips and salsa. Yum! Good flavor, nice heat and crunchy chips. Sister ordered a carne asada burrito which she declared delicious. I ordered chilaquiles with green sauce and added the carnitas. It came with rice (super) and beans (ok, used unusual seasoning which kinda threw me off). The chilaquiles and carnitas combo was perfect. I highly recommend!! read more

Sooo good! Fresh fresh ceviche with what I think are homemade tortilla chips. So addictive. The guacamole is the best Ive ever had from a restaurant. My cucumber lemonade was perfect for a hot and humid day! My friend had fish tacos and said they were the best they've had. Im only taking a star off because none of the tables had been wiped off and staff were all talking to each other. Maybe was something important but still would've helped to have clean tables. Regardless Im going back~! read more

Barrio Café in Wahiawa was an excellent experience. I especially loved the vegan tofu tacos--they were fresh, flavorful, and thoughtfully prepared. The side of potatoes was also outstanding, perfectly crispy and seasoned just right, making them irresistibly tasty. My son thoroughly enjoyed the crazy fries, which disappeared quickly from his plate. The atmosphere at Barrio Café is relaxed, inviting, and genuinely comfortable. Miriam, the owner, is wonderful--warm, engaging, and passionate about her business. She spent time chatting with me about the café and introduced me to a delicious fermented beverage that's similar to kombucha but uniquely different, and incredibly good. I even took home a bottle because it was so impressive. She also generously gifted me a bottle of her homemade syrup, a sweet, smoky, and spicy creation that has become a standout ingredient at home--especially fantastic in margaritas and on waffles. Barrio Café truly delivers an exceptional mix of delicious food, friendly vibes, and genuine hospitality. I'll definitely be telling all my friends about this place, and I'm looking forward to seeing Miriam's amazing products on store shelves soon! read more
