First time, we came across it because El Palenque was closed. Devoured the Cali burrito and the Fish tacos with their spiciest aioli sauce. The following week we drove out there from town, special, to try the birria tacos and chips and salsa. Omg! I will be back. The salsa and aioli are for people who like spicy and you just can't find that level heat in town. More importantly, the birria taco plate with the beans and rice was so authentic! May be better than Mexico, kine good. Like people in Wahiawa no fool around and the homemade bag of deep fried tortilla chips with the salsa is so good. We are big Mexican food fans so it was only a matter of time that we venture out towards Wahiawa to check this place out. Arrived a little after 9am on a Saturday, the small parking lot was already full. We managed to find some street parking less than a block away. These guys are located next to Kilani bakery, the outside is painted a bright green so surely you can't miss it. Seat yourself upon entering, water cups and menus provided quickly. Neat artwork on the walls gives you some eye candy while you wait for your meal. Burria loco moco don't disappoint. Eggs were cooked just as I asked, portion is perfect. Birria meat was juicy & plentiful. Our server, Francis was friendly and attentive. She joked back with us as my jokester husband made a few remarks about having to eat rice (he's dieting but never when it comes to Mexican food). Small oversight made on our order was quickly & satisfactorily rectified. They also sell various salsa and dips in their cold case display next to the register. It's been awhile since I've been to Barrio Cafe on Kilani Ave in Wahiawa...I don't have a reason to come here usually, but visited on a whim...since I have the day off. If the Huevos rancheros isn't good, can't call yourself a Mexican restaurant. Solid if not spectacular. Cal-Mex style of cuisine...fine by me. Service is friendly and quick. I moved to Hawaii a little over a year ago from Southern California, and the most common agreement I'll have with others who moved here from SoCal is: "Hawaii is incredible... But it's hard to find good Mexican food here." I tend to always forget to take photos before I dive in, so what's not pictured are the carne asada street taco and the Cali Burrito (ordered with no fries) that the hubs got. Let's be real - we didn't have high expectations; (come on, there's other cuisines Hawai'i is known for, but Mexican isn't on the top of the list). However, we polished everything we ordered at Barrio Cafe. This small hole in wall spot had great service and the best Mexican food we've had since landing in Oahu. I'd rate it five stars for Mexican on the island but gotta admit it's not quite what we're used to in SoCal so knocking one star. We'll definitely be back when craving home. read more

Such a cute shop, open lay out and you can see the kitchen. I just wished they played a bit more Hispanic music but not really a big deal. I definitely recommend coming here and trying their machaca burrito. I found out about this little place by going to green world coffee farm and ordering a machaca burrito. It's amazing along with the red salsa literally chefs kiss. It's so flavorful and I couldn't get enough of it which is why I came here the very next day. The guy that greeted me when I first walked in was super attentive and helpful. I did order the tripleta torta; for me it was a bit much and I wish I would've stuck with the Machaca burrito. You do get a huge torta to start with for me it was a bit much, I feel like with all three meats the chicken, ham and steak the chicken gets lost when you take a bite of the torta. Decent food for the location. If you're in a rush, this place can get you fed quick. Flavors are good, but not quite our cup of tea. Birria was just shredded beef in lightly grilled tortillas with cheese - additional cost for cheese - not the crunchy, melty, hyped up version you see at other restaurants. My wife didn't really care for it. Carnitas was good, but not anything special. Although, I did enjoy the rice & beans - those had good flavor. Service was fast, but not personable by any means. It felt like a turn-n-burn type of experience. Lastly, the food is served in take-out containers... not my fave while trying to enjoy a dine-in experience. I love this place! It's been a few years so we stopped in on our way to the Wahiawā Botanical Gardens and I'm glad we did! I got a torta madre on suggestion from the waitress. Yummy! There's beets in it!!!! I absolutely loved it. My gf got a burrito was a bit disappointed in the lack of flavor. Really cool atmosphere. Ceviche was really great! They sell in two sizes, half pound or full pound. You can either do fish of the day or shrimp. For the fish and shrimp tacos, they chop up the fish very small, which was nice being bite size, however, I don't think there was very much fish. Loco moco was pretty salty, surprisingly, and not very saucy. Small parking lot out front. More of a to go spot than a sit down place, although there are tables inside. read more

Place is very nice & cozy. It's small local own restaurant that serves Mexican dishes. It's absolutely delicious! this place is located in Wahiawā and you turn on that road that 7-11 is on the corner. You folks should try it out. They close @ 3pm tho. So HURRY UP! I was fortunate to have made it in time! I'm so glad I was able to make it to this event! Aside of what I wrote on top, I wanted to add on about the place and the food. Oh man! If you want authentic Mexican dishes, come HERE!! They're so delicious! There's hardly any places that sells authentic Mexican dishes. The ambience is very colorful and nostalgic. It seems like there's a lot of sentimental memories displayed here. The painting is one of the highlights. As well as the masks. There's so some photos of art decor that was given to the owner to display in the restaurant. Someone a fan of Frida Kalo as well. Beautiful and authentic. The place isn't too big, but they only serve during the day time. I think it because they also have a sister restaurant nearby that serves dinner. So you can go there instead. But if you come here... you have to try out the business next door as well. They serve some moctails made of vinegar & carbonated water. It's really delicious! I LIKE IT! If you don't like vinegar... you won't like this! But if you're ok with some sweet tangy flavors & willing to give it a try... by all means, GO FOR IT! I'll be posting on their site too! I'm so glad we came. Absolutely onolicious. I learned about Barrio Cafe a few nights ago during one of their pop up events where we tried off menu items. And it was so good that I had to come back to try their regular menu. The restaurant is only open from 7 am to 3 pm Mondays - Saturdays. This is a sister location to the original el Palenque on Kam Hwy, also in Wahiawa. So Saturdays are the only days I can come for brunch. At first glance, everything on the menu looks so good so it took a little time to decide. However, ordering the Horchata Iced Coffee didn't take long as I was told by an acquaintance that it's one of her favorite things from Barrio Cafe. And it certainly did not disappoint. I was feeling tired already for a Saturday afternoon but this helped me to perk up and last through shopping the rest of the day. I finally decided on the Chorizo fried rice with two eggs over easy. And I was pleasantly surprised by its simple yet elegant plating on an aluminum serving tray and in a simple aluminum round take out bowl. And I know it makes no sense but it was really pretty, but I'm still gonna eat it. It's like they know you're not gonna finish it and let me help you with preparing it for easy take home consumption. So smart! I've been to Mexico twice and i can understand the difference between authentic Mexican food and commercial US flavor. The flavor reminded me that I had lunch in Rosarita MX once. I completely forgot about that until I started chowing down. After my sister was undecided between shrimp tacos, fish tacos and their variety burrito, our hostess recommended the fish tacos and said, next time you can get the burrito. She knew how good their food is and that we'd be back. Iso my sister decided in the fish tacos. I did take a bite of a taco and it really was tasty. The refried beans, definitely not canned, and the rice made with lime and cilantro, were excellent. Like the pop up event a few nights earlier and this experience, it's all the same, just a lovely time. My sister was involved with looking at everything. She felt everything was as authentic as can be. We look forward to visiting in the future and bringing family along to enjoy this well known neighborhood gem in Wahiawa. read more

I absolutely love this place. It's so crazy I would have never knew this place existed if it were for my friend and im so glad she did because the food is beyond amazing. I had the Barrio Krazy Fries. They were so good and so flavorful. It was really big too I couldn't finish it so I have leftovers. The waitress and staff were so nice and friendly it's just a family owned restaurant and I love supporting the local community. They have a great menu. It's a small restaurant so our huge friend group filled up the whole restaurant. Parking is limited so just make sure you park in designated areas of find good street parking. A friend knew we headed to Wahiawa and sighed we lunch at Barrio. Glad we did!! Small place with seating for 20 at most. We were greeted immediately by the host/server/cashier. He was awesome! Immediately brought water and checked on us and refilled water regularly. Loved the decor on a background of purple and mauve - cool assortment of Lucha Libre masks and assorted Mexican art. But the food was the star! Started with chips and salsa. Yum! Good flavor, nice heat and crunchy chips. Sister ordered a carne asada burrito which she declared delicious. I ordered chilaquiles with green sauce and added the carnitas. It came with rice (super) and beans (ok, used unusual seasoning which kinda threw me off). I've been coming since this place was created as an offshoot of el palenque. I like showing support to businesses I like so off and on when I'm on island I stop here. The menu is quite expensive and has a lot of variety for those on any craving within the Mexican genre. Recently I've done two orders of burritos and one order of fries with a drink. I never had a coffee from here so when I had to work one morning I thought to give it a shot. Despite the name and me thinking it was horchata with hints of coffee it was quite coffee forward with hints of horchata which was regardless quite good. The burritos were a 2 for one chorizo egg burrito and a Cali burrito. The burritos in general were somewhat smaller than they originally were when they started which were smaller than what I'm used to from other places even palenque depending on what burrito you order. Taste as always though is still exceptional and filling is not chimped out. As for the fries this was ginormous even compared to palenque with the same cheeses and seasonings as there while also having solid salsas to boot. Everything was perfect on that and loved every second of it. Overall if the burritos were bigger for the price it's an easy 5 but regardless a solid place I'll always support. read more

My cucumber lemonade was perfect for a hot and humid day! My friend had fish tacos and said they were the best they've had. Barrio Café in Wahiawa was an excellent experience. I especially loved the vegan tofu tacos--they were fresh, flavorful, and thoughtfully prepared. The side of potatoes was also outstanding, perfectly crispy and seasoned just right, making them irresistibly tasty. My son thoroughly enjoyed the crazy fries, which disappeared quickly from his plate. The atmosphere at Barrio Café is relaxed, inviting, and genuinely comfortable. Miriam, the owner, is wonderful--warm, engaging, and passionate about her business. She spent time chatting with me about the café and introduced me to a delicious fermented beverage that's similar to kombucha but uniquely different, and incredibly good. I even took home a bottle because it was so impressive. She also generously gifted me a bottle of her homemade syrup, a sweet, smoky, and spicy creation that has become a standout ingredient at home--especially fantastic in margaritas and on waffles. Barrio Café truly delivers an exceptional mix of delicious food, friendly vibes, and genuine hospitality. The owner is the sister of El Pelenque, another Mexican food restaurant located a few blocks away. Keep in mind this place serves a different type of Mexican cuisine. You won't find enchiladas, mole, or chile rellenos here if that's what you're looking for. Here is burritos, tortas, tacos. It was crowded, so we were lucky to get one of the last two tables. By the time our food came, there was a short line of people waiting to be seated. There were lots of take out orders being picked up too. The moment we walked in I was in Mexican food heaven. The delicious aroma of the food and spices brought my expectations to a whole different level. Food first, logistics if you keep reading. Food: Street Taco Plate I had the three choice combination with chicken, carnitas, asada. The chicken was a bit dry, and not much flavor. The other two were better. It came with two sides. The rice was yummy. The beans were just ok. I wish they had black beans instead. I did not think to ask. Birria Burrito - wet My friend wanted an enchilada which they don't serve, so she opted for this burrito (paid extra $1.04 for birria) and ordered it wet, with red sauce (paid extra $2.25) and green sauce on the side (paid another extra $2.25). I enjoyed the burrito. Carnitas, rice, cheese, pico. She asked for no beans. Lots of meat and flavor. I like that the tortilla was light and fluffy, unlike some heavy ones. I don't know if they make their own but it was good. See review of prices as you keep reading. Churros French Toast Breakfast is served all day so we ordered this as a sweet to our savory. Happy that they serve it in half orders. This was very good. Crisp on the outside, soft and almost custardy on the inside. I wish there were more sauce to dip it in but that would've been sugar overload. Horchata I was hesitant to order this at first because most other places I get it from is too sweet. A few sips would be enough. This one was perfect. The flavors are well balanced with the sweetness. Price: It's expensive. For two plates, a half an order of a breakfast and two horchatas ($6 each!) it cost $70+. I think the horchatas were way overpriced so won't get those next time. The price of the side sauces were a bit steep too. If I'm willing to pay the price at the time, then I guess it's worth it at the time. Kinda annoyed by the extra charge for the shredded beef. Shredded beef for tacos, nachos, etc. is not a new thing. Now there's a name to it, along with an extra charge for it. Too funny. Also, $2.25 each for the extra sauces? I didn't think it would cost that much extra. Will I be returning? I won't be a regular here. MAYBE if I am craving for a special something that only they serve I will return. From this first visit, there is nothing specific I would return for. It's overall too pricey, parking is a challenge during the lunch hour, and there are MANY other Mexican eateries around. This is not the only game in town. Location: This restaurant is on Kilani St., immediately next door to the Kilani Bakery with the famous brownies. Walk over to Kilani Bakery after lunch to get your ono brownies. Parking: There are only 4 stalls in the front. Good luck finding street parking. We were blessed to get one in the front. What to expect: You get seated. Order from a physical menu. Food is served in take out boxes which I think is a good idea in case you have leftovers. Atmosphere: Casual. Chill. Service: The wait for the food was about 10-15 minutes. Friendly service. Side Note: My sister in law is from Mexico. I asked her about street tacos. She said "WHAAAT? Tacos is tacos. First time here and I was not disappointed! Just made a quick stop to get a snack and saw that the barrio krazy fries was a popular dish so we decided to try. Tons of flavor in every bite. Just a heads up though it's cheaper to pay with cash since they charge extra to help cover card fees. I can't wait to go back and try something else though.
