I hadn't been inside in a minute but Barry's has had a bit of glow up! Inside it's gotten a refresh on the look and I think they've also streamlined the behind the counter to make it more efficient and easier for multiple staff people to be taking orders at a time. I ordered a couple of sandwiches, a half dozen bagels, and a tub of cream cheese, and while I waited I watched all the staff make intentional and efficient movements around their respective stations and the other areas as needed (toasters, microwaves, spread stations, etc). I was also able to stick with my clerk (instead of placing an order and walking away to the end to wait) so I was able to make sure everything in my large order was accurate. It was! For my sandwich I got the Farmer's Eggel for the first time (scrambled eggs with diced peppers and onions along with a sausage patty and American cheese on a plain bagel) which was good and filling for just under $7. Check out at the register is easy and I highly recommend signing up for rewards on their website if you're a frequent flyer. Today I got a $5 reward towards to my order! read more

I went to Barry's bagels everyday for a month for breakfast. Everyone is really nice, the food is great and I really enjoyed the bagels. I would take off a star because I would order online half an hour to 45 minute in advance (sometimes just a bagel) and when I would get there it still wasn't ready. Twice I was told the time was at 9am (even if I placed the order 8-815am which was ridiculous as getting in line would get me my food faster than ordering online!) once the lady told me to come back in half an hour. I love the pumpernickel bagels so much. I do not live very close to the store so that is a barrier to purchasing them very often. In the area recently, went in and asked for 6 sliced to go. If they are already sliced easier to use them out of the freezer and into the toaster. It was a Sunday, early afternoon, a bunch of employees behind the counter, at least 3 of them ready to help me. We don't slice bulk orders. Oh, ok, you don't need my money then. I read another customers complaint about this policy and the management reply. We can't slice them in bulk/slicer because they might be too warm and not slice nicely. My first job 43 years ago was at a bakery and yep, I agree that is correct. What is puzzling however, is that you don't trust your employees to say sorry, but those are too warm/ fresh to be sliced because--why? Your employees lack that cognitive ability? If it is too hard to provide such a basic service and expect people working there to lack the ability to discern that and be able to give such information as a reason why that is sad. Still the BEST bagel shop I've ever been to is Barry's Bagels. I'm not a huge bagel fan but this place can't make a bad bagel. Great flavors and options make Barry's a favorite of adults and kids alike. Very comfortable and well-organized layout after the remodel. Their prices are reasonable and the service is fast and friendly. Lots of staff to serve you. They allow you to sample the cream cheese if you're not sure of the flavor you want. Love BB's. But - I'm taking off a star for one reason. They have stopped slicing bagels when you buy a dozen. There is no explanation other than "sorry. We are not allowed to". You have a bagel slicer. You used to do this. Charge extra for it if you want to. But I do not have a bagel slicer. It's takes me far longer to cut two dozen bagels with a knife and causes arthritis. Barry's bagels is a good bagel indeed. The service is very efficient and even though it was late morning they had a large selection of bagels of all flavors. I like all bagels, guess I'm not to discriminatory. My favorites would be the everything, the half salt, plain, banana nut, garlic, onion, well, as you can tell I could go on and on. The line is very long usually out the door in the mornings but it goes very quick. They are very efficient and the people that handle the food don't handle the money so it's all good. I didn't give it five stars because for me there's nothing like New York bagel company but Barry's bagels is great and I would recommend you give them a try! read more

I've lived in the Ann Arbor area for more than 30 years, roughly half that time within walking distance of Barry's Bagels. When my son was young a typical Saturday morning could include us going to karate classes at Keith Hefner's, coming home to change (phew stinky Karate clothes!) and then heading over to Barry's Bagels to watch through the window while the bagels are in various stages of creation! It was great watching them make the dough, boiling them, and then baking them, all while waiting for those hot fresh bagels to come out! My favorite are the onion sticks, split down the middle, toasted, with butter on the side, but you'll find your favorite Barry's too. It's a great place to sit with a coffee and a bagel, read your paper, and watch the line that snakes out the door and down the walkway, often past several other stores. You get to watch the little kids get excited about watching the bagels being made, the moms and dad's grabbing coffee, and heading off with their kids to soccer or other extracurricular activities, and the oh so yummy bagel sandwiches they make. There's always a newspaper laying around that you can take a look at, and in the summer their outside tables make that activity even better. And honestly, they have the freshest, softest, yummiest, bagels around town! I have quite a few favorites, but again the onion sticks are without a doubt my favorite, followed by the salt bagels, the sesame (again, toasted) , and the everything, with virtually any of their homemade cream cheeses! OK, enough about food. LOL the staff are incredible, moving at lightning speed, with amazing agility, and they manage to get your orders out to you as quick as they can, all while being friendly, AND getting them right! Been coming to Barry's for a very long time...2 decades. Love Barry's but today's visit was a huge disappointment. The quality has gone greatly downhill (haven't been recently due to moving out of town). My go to has been a everything toasted with scallion cream cheese and jalapeño slices. Todays bagel was oddly hard on the outside, barely any everything on the bagel, the girl who made my bagel grabbed a handful of jalapeño from a jar and slapped them juice and all on my bagel...so gross. Jalapeños yes...with juice no. Friendly ness has never been a thing at Barry's...it's more Order, be quiet, pay...don't engage. And, before owner rebuttles my experience. Absolutely the most dreadful experience I've ever had at a bagel shop. Both employees we spoke to on Saturday, July 20th around 1pm had a terrible and most unhelpful demeanor - the person "cooking" our food, and the cashier. The kitchen consists of 6 to 8 microwaves, in which the pre-beaten egg mixture is microwaved in plastic cups. They don't even use a pyrex-type container and a countertop oven. They aren't even cooking. The egg came out soggy and flavorless. The bagel was dry and crumbly. I also got an egg salad sandwich because I love egg salad. Also terrible. Bland and dry. There is nothing quality about this place. The food is not fresh, everything is cooked in a microwave, and the workers seem very incompetent and unorganized. Going back to the service, the food worker that helped us seemed annoyed that we didn't know how things worked even though we were polite. She couldn't provide any recommendations as a first time customer, and she didn't ask us if we wanted to eat there or take it to go. The cashier had an attitude with every person in line. When it was our turn he asked us "what did you get" in a very curt and impolite manner. Later, I overheard another customer expressing concern about an issue to the cashier, and the cashier had such a terrible attitude with her. read more

However, don't think it was a true egg bagel. Oh well, a gal can dream; i still haven't found an egg bagel in the Midwest! At first, I just asked for cream cheese & then saw that they had a good selection of sandwich options. So, I changed it to lox. Service was also very slow even though they had many employees behind the counter just standing around. Ambiance: old (not in a charming way) and sticky. We ended up sitting outside to eat our bagels. Food: we order the spinach feta and tomato herb bagel and they were on the stale side. A friendly little bagel shop in a strip mall near a branch library and a coffee shop. Customers on a Sunday morning seemed like regulars in a neighborhood shop. Fun option to watch them making the bagels through a big glass window, including authentic boiling tank. Skilled incredibly competent worker in full action, figured he must have heatproof fingers. Amazing. The bagels had great texture, lots of flavor, mine personally had way too much salt sprinkled or spilled on it. Almost gritty. It was supposed to be just a raisin bagel. This is a good bagel spot. It is often crowded, but the staff manage the rush well. Everyone I have encountered here has been friendly. The bagels are good, but not great. It is difficult to get a really good bagel outside of NYC, but Barry comes close. They have some of the best bagels I have had outside of the City. Best best best bagels in all of Ann Arbor! I'm personally late to work every Sunday because I'm getting bagels for me and coworkers. They're always so fresh and delicious and it's awesome you can see them making the bagels. I always go for the everything, spinach feta, asiago cheese, or vanilla cinnamon bagel. I've tried a large variety and I've never been disappointed. If you go really early(7-9am) you're in the clear, but anytime after 9am you'll probably get stuck in a ridiculous long line. They work relatively fast so you shouldn't be waiting much longer than 15 minutes, but be aware if you do go after 9am you'll be stuck in a line. The bagels here are worth it though! read more

A great place for bagels in Ann Arbor! I went on a Saturday morning, and although it was very busy, service was very fast. I got a Eggel Sandwich with Sausage, American Cheese, and Scallion Cream Cheese. I got it toasted and with some orange juice. I got my sandwich to go, and because it was so hot after being toasted, the Cream cheese completely melted making it very difficult to eat when I got home as everything was sliding off the bagel. I will definitely be back, I just would recommend maybe asking for cream cheese on the side so the sandwich doesn't get too messy! read more

La Bagel Delight in Brooklyn has the best I've ever had, but I'd rate Barry's right up there with the Zabar's I used to have shipped to me. Really great! I tried the vanilla cinnamon with a smidge of butter and brown cinnamon sugar. Less the guilt of cream cheese. Loved it. Brought a bundle home for the kids & the same vanilla cinnamon flavor was a big hit. Even for my daughter who is the blueberry diva. Nestled in Westgate shopping mall with multiple options for clothing, books, shoes, toys, and supplies shopping. Large updated Kroger next door for your convenience. Zero stars. For real. This place could be so good. But it's totally fails. Where to begin... it's Saturday morning & there are tons of young people "working", moving at a SNAIL'S PACE talking about Travis Scott's record covers & whatever other stupidity teenage boys mumble about. This place is manned almost exclusively by useless, hungover and/or high males; hire more females, dude! Line is growing which makes NO IMPRESSION on any of the sleepwalkers "working" behind the counter. It feels so uncomfortable just standing there watching them move in slow motion (like for real) & finally someone takes my very simple order & repeats it back to me incorrectly (no surprises there) and I just KNOW he is not going to toast my bagel twice, like I asked three times (spoiler alert: my bagel lands in my hand toasted all of once). This guy cuts my bagel so we've got one bagel CHIP side & one puffy chubbed side). Why don't they have bagel slicers?? Let's move from poor management & staff and ask why the drink cooler is stocked like a Speedway Station...garbage beverages & it's so easy to stock decent beverages not found at the gas station, go ask ANY place in Ann Arbor that does, which are numerous. I will admit it. I am a bagel snob. Perhaps it is a result of growing up in New York, but I've always found it challenging to find good bagels in Michigan. At an old job, we had a bagel club, and I had to institute a list of acceptable places where bagels could be bought. The bagel scene in Ann Arbor has always been a bit of a surprise to me. With a student population that draws very heavily from the east coast, you would think a decent bagel place would have popped up in the campus area over the past 30 years. All of this brings me to Barry Bagels. I had heard about this place, but had never been there until I started going to a gym right nearby. I have to say that I've been very impressed - good selection of flavors, good cream cheese choices, fresh taste. More recently I have samples their muffins (OK, but nothing special0 and their onion sticks (yum!). It's still not quite as good as a real New York bagel, but it is definitely a step above the Einstein's and Breugger's variety! read more

Don't let the (likely) long line scare you. - it moves fast. And the servers are friendly and efficient. Their Amaretto coffee is delicious. I drink it black and it truly needs nothing added. My son always gets the egg cheese combo on a toasted blueberry bagel. I tried it and can see why it's a favorite. They're all about $5 but are generously sized. The bagels are New York style, my fave (another reviewer described them well: fluffy and chewy, with a little crisp). I chose the Farmer's bagel without onions. Again, generous portion and well prepared. I opted for a package of their chocolate chip bagel chips while waiting in line. I'd pass on them next time. Simply adding chocolate chips to a bagel chip doesn't do enough to feature the chocolate. Maybe lots of powdered sugar would help. I want any chocolate calories to count. :) read more

I made a Barry Bagels run this week and decided it was time for a review. Barry's is the most convenient bagel place to our home, so I'm glad that they turn out a pretty decent product. I love me some fresh Ess-a-Bagel bagels when I'm in Midtown Manhattan, so the following review comes through that lens. Barry bagels are pretty decent for a Michigan bagel. The size is good. (more practical than the monsters that Ess-a-Bagel turns out) They're nicely chewy with only a bit of the breadiness that plagues most chain bagel places. I generally get a 'Barry Dozen' (14!) and prep them at home. With a nice selection of savory and sweet versions, everyone in my house can get what they want. Barry's cream cheese is quite good, so if I don't feel like making my own (surprisingly easy to do), I can grab a nice tub from the helpful efficient staff. The recent remodeling (2022) looks great! They used to get a good amount of sit-down lunch traffic, so the extra seating will be helpful once we're finally on the back side of The 'Rona Years. A head scratcher to me is the dearth of lox choices on their menu. While there are lox sandwiches, there are no lox-flavored cream cheese or lox by the pound options. One star off. Perhaps it's best to think of Barry's as a sandwich shop that uses pretty decent bagels as its bread base. But still... C'mon Folks, show us some more Lox Love! :-) read more
