After my exam, X-rays, and treatment plan, I was told I needed one extraction, a bone graft, five fillings, and eventually five crowns. I signed a financing agreement for approximately $4,600 to begin treatment. Later, after speaking with my insurance company, I learned that DeLand Smiles is actually out of network with my insurance plan. My insurance representative called the office with me on the line and asked why I had never been informed. The response from the office was: "There's a sign in the lobby. It's up to them to see it and read it." That answer was extremely disappointing. If a patient believes an office accepts their insurance, that should be communicated clearly before they commit to thousands of dollars in treatment--not left to a sign in the waiting room. I have no issue paying for quality dental care, but I do have an issue with a lack of transparency. I now owe $4,600 and still need additional fillings and crowns, which I was quoted another $5,600 for. Because of this experience, I chose to continue my treatment with a dentist who is actually in my insurance network. My advice to anyone considering this office: Call your insurance company yourself and verify that the dentist is in network before signing any financial agreements. Don't rely solely on what you're told. I hope this review encourages the office to be more transparent with future patients so no one else ends up in the same situation. Also this is not ran by the man in the picture it has been bought out by a couple this needs an update cause this is false advertisement for the workers and owners of this company as it currently stands

I had…read moreconsulted a couple of other dentists about a molar with a root canal that was hurting again and they all told me that getting it extracted and getting an expensive implant was my only option. Upon recommendation from a friend, I dropped into his office. Dr. Prakash, on the other hand, said there was better than a 50% chance he could redo the root canal and preserve my tooth - for a fraction of the price of the implant alternative. He did a great job and now, couple of weeks later, I am without pain and my original molar is still with me. And I didn't have to empty out my wallet! His staff was very friendly and I had a great experience overall. Highly recommend. There aren't that many dedicated dentists that look out for you out there!

I'm the kind of person who typically researches a business to death before finally going so I took recommendations from friends and got to it. Two of my friends recommended Dr. Rae so I gave the office a call in desperation. They were able to get me in to see Dr. Rae within hours! Everyone from the front desk to the doctor himself was friendly and warm. We set an appointment on Monday for an extraction after weighing all the options. On Thursday the pain was so intense that I called the office to see if there were cancellations that I could sneak into, there weren't but I was told first thing Friday morning (they're typically closed). I went in for the extraction at 10am and sat back down in my car to drive home at 10:40am. I never knew getting a tooth pulled would be such a pleasant experience, but Dr. Rae and his staff showed me that dentists don't have to be feared. He explained every step and what to expect along the way, making me feel prepared and at ease. I am so happy to have finally found a wonderful dentist in Deland! They will not tell you that they added things to your procedure. Example: You'll go in for a cleaning. That's it!! Nothing else requested. They won't ask you. Would you like x-rays and a full exam? Would you like to have a protectant put on your teeth. Instead, they do it. They don't communicate except for when the bill comes due. And they want payment that immediately. They won't bill you. When I pointed out what they missed they were shocked & asked me who did the dental work. Honestly I couldn't even remember Dr. Cowell's name but when I started describing the office they knew exactly who I was talking about because he has such an excellent reputation. Since moving away from Deland I've gotten cleanings at multiple offices and always had to point out those particular fillings (they aren't tiny either). Fast forward another few years, and I had a filling done in Orlando. The filling fell out after less than a year. This shocked me because I've never had any problems with the ones done by Dr. Cowell are still fully in tact after 15 years! The office in Orlando wanted to charge me full price to redo the work. They also said most fillings don't last more than a few years anyways. Well I wasn't going to repay the same dentist who obviously didn't do a good job in the first place. I drove over an hour to see Dr. Cowell who not only put in the new filling for the same price the other office quoted me, but he has a 5 year guarantee/ warranty on his work. He takes his time and does it right the first time so the guarantee isn't really needed but does provide peace of mind. In more than 16 years of seeing Dr. Cowell my one frustration was the time I paid for an appointment for a toothache only to find out there wasn't anything wrong with my teeth but my sinuses were inflamed and causing the teeth sensitivity; not really his fault. In the past I've wondered how you could tell if a dentist was any good. If they complete whatever you need and you don't walk away in pain what's the difference? Well unpaid compliments from other dental professionals seem like good sign to me. I'm currently living out of state for school but I will definitely be continuing to get my dental work done with Dr. Cowell when I am home to visit.

I made the appointment with Dee, she made me feel like I was going to get the best cleaning of my life. I justified the high price for services and made the appointment. I went in for a teeth cleaning $102 PLUS exam fee $65. I already had current x rays. When I got home I looked at my teeth and still had plaque on them along the gumline. I had one area on my gumline that the hygienist scraped and it bled for 2 hours. I have experienced better cleanings at other Dentist's offices for far less money. I was also quoted $1,415 for a porcelain crown and build-up with no root canal. I already had a quote from another dentist in Lake Mary for the same tooth, porcelain crown and build-up for substantially less money. Lastly, I did not appreciate the hygienist coughing consistently throughout the entire session.
