I have used Barry Regent a few times as I don't dry clean too many of my clothes. They have always been friendly, but not overly so. They were nice during my first visit, sewing a button back on my winter coat without charging me and while I waited. I haven't had a bad experience, but a dry cleaner is a dry cleaner until they mess up an article of clothing. read more

I'm genuinely surprised to see so many bad reviews! I've always had a good cleaning and good service from Barry Regent. I'll admit, that prior to Barry Regent, I'd always hit a discount dry cleaner. With the discount dry cleaners I've used, it was always the same: over starched, not very pleasant dry clean smell, and just poor results (although, in retrospect, I don't know what I was hoping for). Barry Regent has always cleaned my clothes thoroughly and made them like new! I admit, they're a little pricier than the dry cleaner closer to my home, but for me, I take my "important clothes" (i.e., favorite dresses and suits and silk) to Barry Regent. I keep my current dry cleaner for the day-to-day wear to save some money, but no one handles my important and special clothes except for Barry Regent. read more

Went here on a referral to get my wedding dress cleaned ($150). They did a good job but since there was some dirt stains on the hem I still did a lot more work on it at home. Brought some clothes that needed to be dry cleaned too since I was going there anyway and those cost a small fortune to have done. I have been searching endlessly for a good dry cleaner in the city. I love Davis Imperial but they are super pricey. Several friends recommend that I try Barry Regent. I tried them for the first time this week and was very happy. As some of the other reviews point out, this place is not cheap. After reading the reviews on Yelp, I decided that Barry Regent would be a good spot to take an extreme cleaning case. I had spilled coffee on a custom made cloth handbag. I took the bag to B.R. Cleaners where both the check-in girl and the manager were pretty rude to me. The manager told me that most likely my bag was ruined and that they could still work on it but if the bag WAS ruined I would still have to pay. I have no problem paying after an honest try at a treacherous stain but it seemed like he was saying "yeah, we'll try, whatever." I definitely am not going to agree to pay someone that has already resolved to not try and conquer my coffee stain. I agree with previous posts: their customer relations need some work! I got a dress taken in at Barry Regent. The top of the dress was fine, but the bottom was too big. I brought it back with their ticket which stated that I could get it re-done if it didn't fit. BUT they said that I didn't ask them to take in the skirt originally so it would be another $35! This made no sense what so ever - why would I bring in a dress that was too big to begin with and not ask them to take in the skirt?! I also do not appreciate the "boss" over there. He doesn't talk to customers directly, but instead only communicates through his staff. He also rules by fear and I feel bad for the people working there. He seems terrible to them and he doesn't even look at them when he talks to them. I won't go back there again. There are PLENTY of other good tailors to go to who are pleasant, cheaper and do a good job the first time around. read more

Everyone seems to love the tailoring here. I am only reviewing the dry cleaning aspect of it. I have 3 points about this. 1, I went to Barry-Regent because they advertise themselves as having an "eco-friendly" and perc-free cleaning process. After going there a few times, I found out that they actually have 3 different cleaning processes, one of which is the traditional one using perc, and they don't use one of the perc-free methods unless you ask for it. Which you probably won't, because they don't tell you about it. I asked what they had been doing with my clothes, and they were using perc, so that kind of defeated the purpose of going there. 2, Every single person I ever spoke to or dealt with there was exceptionally rude. I mean, it's been a long time since anyone was that rude to me when I was paying them. 3, The last straw was when I took my own reusable bag and asked them to use it. It's a Greener Cleaner bag, but I've used it at various other cleaners with no problem. The idea is to just use the same one plastic bag repeatedly, instead of using dozens of plastic bags which get thrown away. I've never had a dry cleaner fail to get this concept before. When I picked my clothes up from Barry-Regent, every single item was in a separate throwaway plastic bag - they weren't even doubled up - and all of them were then placed inside my reusable bag. So in the end, Barry-Regent ended up being rather eco-hostile, and I'm not going back. read more

I used Barry Regent cleaners after purchasing a Groupon. Barry Regent claimed to be experts at cleaning leather jackets and also on alternations. I had a $800 leather jacket that they somehow found a way to shrink. Also, they managed to destroy the leather by using such harsh chemicals that made the leather so rough and dry, that the leather actually cracked when I took it off the hanger. i went into the store to show the issue, but the manager did not care and said that because I signed a waiver, it was my fault. I asked for a refund for the $60, but the manager was very rude and said to take my business elsewhere. I should have known better, because the people in front of me were complaining about work they had done on a pair of dress pants, but said the work was never even done, but they were still charged for it. Save your money and go else where. Got a dress altered here and they dont tell you how much it will cost upfront. I went to go pick it up and it came out to $140 (the dress only cost $150 to start with). It also took three weeks to get done so it wasnt a rush order or anything. I emailed them asking if they could explain the high cost of getting the dress altered and they said they couldnt break it down...so how do you decide what to charge for each alteration?! They said the best they could do is give me a credit on my account, which isnt really helpful since I dont get things dry cleaned very often. I emailed them back asking for a better answer on the charges and they never responded. How is that professional? I wasnt rude or mean in any way, I just wanted to know how they decided to charge what they did. read more

I struggle to even begin to comprehend my recent expereince with Barry Regent cleaners. It is the single most offensive customer service interaction I have ever had with a business. I've been a customer of their's for some time now. Their service has not always been great. Sometimes it's very professional and friendly while other times it's flat out rude. One time their driver even misplaced half of an entire order of mine and it was not until I called several weeks later that they tracked it down. Recently I went to wear an expensive shirt that they had cleaned and found two holes where the collar connects to the shirt. One was were the snap had been pulled away from the shirt. The second appeared to be were the snap pulled across the shirt during handling. The damage was not there when I took the item in for cleaning and further it would be completely inconsistent with occurring during wear. The shirt had also only been worn approximately twice and showed absolutely no signs of wear. I took the shirt back to them and the manager Richard took a great deal of time assessing it. He acknowledged the damage and and even agreed that it seemed to line up with the snap. Initially he tried to insist that they try and repair it. Knowing that there was no way to sew up two holes without it being visible I did not agree to the repair. Richard relented and entered the a claim for the shirt and told me the damage seemed very obvious and that there should be no problem getting reimbursement. Fast forward 4 days when I get a call from Richard. The details of which would take pages so I will summarize here and point out just a few of the insults that were directed at me, their customer. Richard told me. 1.) that the they felt that the holes were actually from a flaw in the fabric and that I should take the shirt back to the manufacturer (this isn't a joke!), 2.) their pressing machine could not have caused the damage 3.) they found other markings on the shirt which proved that it had been previously been cleaned by someone else. When I tried to stop Richard by telling him he did not want to go down this path with a good customer he interrupted and yelled back at me "you don't want to go down this path" with us. I reasonably tried to respond to Richards 3 points: 1.) Tears do not appear in a shirt upon the third cleaning from fabric flaws 2.) there are other ways the shirt could have been damaged besides the pressing machine 3.) even if the shirt had been cleaned by someone else previously (they are the only dry cleaners I use in Chicago though and I do not recall the shirt ever going anywhere else while traveling) it went to them without any holes and came back with two, what happened in the past had no bearing on what was going on currently. Throughout the conversation Richard was increasingly argumentative, combative and continually interrupted. Not wanting to take any further abuse I asked to speak to the owner who I was told was John. Richard placed me on hold for almost 5 minutes, and when he got back on told me John was busy and would call me tomorrow. I questioned if John knew there was an upset customer on the phone that he was blowing off. Richard then once again began arguing with me, this time going so far as to tell me I had taken the shirt somewhere else and was lying. At this point I insisted in talking to John believing no business owner would be so insulting to a good customer.......I could not have been more wrong!!!!!! John got on the phone and initially said that he did not know the whole situation. When I began to try and explain what had transpired he immediately cut me off and WENT OFF ON ME!!!!!!!! In addition to telling me I was lying about them cleaning the shirt he lectured me on being busy and of interrupting them in the middle of other important things. Out of shock I asked if his customers were not his most important matter. He paused for a second but when I asked him why they were speaking to me in this manner and behaving so unprofessionally he started yelling at me that I was yelling(which I was not) and that he was too busy and did not appreciate being bugged! He finally suggested that he wanted to send the shirt to a lab who could tell them exactly what happened....a lab could determine damage such as a stain but it's inconceivable they could tell you how something was torn. When I tried to confirm who would be following up with me from Barry Regent and when. John launched on me again in a tirade about going somewhere else if I did not like their service and it culminated in him using profantity to insult me and slamming down the phone. They know they are wrong and took responsibility at first. While refusing to cover damages they caused is ridiculous. Yelling, swearing and berating a customer is simply unbelievable. I'm posting this because I do not want anyone else to be treated so poorly. read more

It was my own fault for continuing to go here (convenience) after my clothes were returned with weird crinkles around the buttons, collars, sleeves, etc., buttons that were ruined bc they weren't properly covered during cleaning, etc. - I even overlooked a blouse that was burned somehow because, well, it wasn't that noticeable and it was kind of an old blouse anyway. The real bummer was that I went to pick up a dress I was planning on wearing to an out-of-town wedding the following day. Normally I wouldn't have even taken it out of the bag and just packed it right up, but for some reason I took it out and discovered that one of the straps was fastened together with a safety pin! It wasn't broken when I dropped it off, so they clearly broke the dress and, without simply sewing it back (hey- fine, stuff happens, just fix it), they safety pinned it together, didn't say a word to me and sent me on my way. I was fuming at the near miss of having to wear a safety pinned dress to a wedding, so I brought it back the next day (calmed down) and explained the situation. I think it was a manager that I spoke with, and I was so stunned that he didn't apologize, didn't refund the cleaning, and acted like it was a favor they weren't charging me to fix it. I've been going here for a few years and have never had a problem - in fact, a few times they got stains out when I wasn't sure what they were. Once I noticed a stain that didn't come out so they redid it and refunded my money. They are pricey, but worth it for your better clothes. I tried Barry Regent because of their; Quality comes from a commitment to providing the best service mantra. Of the three times I tried Barry Regent, twice blouses came back with stains from their equipment. The stains are VERY apparent and have ruined the garments. The best part is that they included a tag on the hanger of the "cleaned and pressed" shirts that said something to the extent of "The stains in this garment have been evaluated and due to safety we can assure you that the garment has received the best dry cleaning we can offer." After confronting them about the ruined shirt, not only did they try to tell me that I had brought the shirt in that way and it was my fault, but that "the guy that cleans spots is at lunch and he can look at it when he gets back." After returning later to find my garment no further treated, they claimed that I would not be able to speak with the same manager that I'd spoke with earlier because he had gone to lunch. While speaking to another manager he tried to slough me off saying "I'd have to come back and speak to the manager I had my original conversation with" and there was nothing more he could. Simply wanting the money for the ruined garments, I asked that they compensate me. The manager told me they can't make those decisions that I'd have to speak with the owner. As livid as I could be at this point, I asked for the owner to which I get varying responses over the extent of the conversation saying "he'll be in an hour, he's not coming in today, he works from 10-4, he's out of town right now". In the end I left with nothing more than ruined clothes and a chip on my shoulder. If you can't trust a dry cleaner to press a button down shirt, quite possibly the most often dry cleaned item ever, how can you expect them to handle any other kind of garment? I've gotten several things dry cleaned at Barry Regent - they do a fine job cleaning...no problems at all. I have two issues with BR: it is terribly overpriced and the staff is rude. I know that dry cleaning is expensive and there are other places in the same n'hood that are pricey, but BR is a little excessive. Also - it seems that they don't have a standard way of pricing some things (e.g., formal dress, scarf, blanket) and the price is named by a guy named Richard based on nothing specific. Also - I tried to get a dress tailored there and the woman was so rude and unwilling to offer advice on what the alterations might look like that I left. In addition, they were going to charge me $35 to take in the waist of a dress (needless to say, I went down the street to another place and they did it for $18). I won't be back to BR. Based on the fact that there are two or three dry cleaners on every block in Lakeview East, I don't know why anyone would go to BR. read more

Have gone here for years and while they're pricey I've always been happy with their work. Recently got a parking ticket along with another driver in their drop off zone signed for customer usage (Wellington). You can't fight city hall but if the signage wrong its Barry-Regent's responsibility to get it fixed. No dry cleaner is worth a $75 ticket. read more

Just really screwed me over. I specifically mentioned I needed my shirt altered, and I left it there over the weekend so that might be possible. I have a job interview tomorrow that I needed the alteration done for. Even though the shirt was not ready the first two days I stopped in the store to check, the alteration was somehow not completed when I picked the shirt up this evening. I only realized once I got home - unfortunately, I don't have time to run back there. I thought this is the place to go for dry cleaning/alterations. I have been mislead. First of all, I don't understand why it takes 2 weeks to do simple alterations. Two separate occasions I brought pants to be hemmed, and both times they said that the pants would not be ready for two weeks. Really?! Why so long, maybe they need to hire more people. What a complete joke wedding dress preservation is at this cleaners. After 20 years of carting my "carefully cleaned and preserved" dress box around from house to house, my girls convinced me to open the box and show them my dress. After being told by the cleaners to keep it airtight so it will last for the next generation, I opened it to show the next generation and was disgusted by what I found. The dress had not been cleaned at all. There was dirt all along the bottom from the reception and a stain on the front (I still remember the appetizer that caused the stain!) what a great gig - tell the bride not to open the box so you can hide the dirty dress and still make $$. I would never recommend this place and if I didn't live out of state, I would be dragging this mess back in for them to see and demand payment. Brides beware! read more

Barry Regent is a great dry cleaner that has been around forever. I have had every sort of service done here: from dry cleaning to alterations to having a very expensive couture sweater "blocked". But what I really have to give them 5 stars for is the work they did on hemming all of my designer jeans. They will alter the inseam but keep the original hem which is very important for jeans that cost a small fortune. The original hem alterations are not cheap at $25 a pop, but I think if you can dish out over a hundred and fifty bucks for a pair of True Religions, then you can probably afford the $25 alteration. It is definitely worth it!!! read more

I've been a loyal customer here for more than 10 years, and today I think Barry Regent has lost my business. I brought in a pair of basic fleece pants for an easy seam repair (outside leg seam had opened up at the ankle and unraveled about 4 inches). Something that should take a quick sewing machine stitch. I was charged $25 without any explanation when asked. I could have bought a new pair of pants for that cost. I'll gladly walk an extra block to another cleaners in exchange for honest service. read more

I began using this cleaner a year ago, after my old one declined in quality after 20 years (American Ideal). Like others in my building I need pickup and delivery for both dry cleaning and laundering sheets. For nine months things were good, though they pick up only once a week not twice like American Ideal. Recently, however, quality has slipped drastically. After summer storage they returned the wrong down coat with a fur trim that couldn't attach to the hood because, unlike my real coat, the hood had no snaps corresponding to the hood's snaps. The manager tried to convince me that I had made up the whole problem and that I had always had a fur trim that didn't attach to the coat! He was really rude. Several weeks later a top and some pants did not come back when they were supposed to. They found them, but again the manager tried to blame the whole thing on my doorman -- as if a large green bag could have sat in our small outer lobby for a week unnoticed! And when I explained that I urgently needed the items for a lengthy trip three days later, and even offered to pay for FedEx or a messenger service (the plant is 20 miles from my home), he was really rude again, and totally refused to help. So the items will arrive two days after I leave -- if at all. I am done with this rude and disrespectful treatment and have another cleaner lined up. read more

I called the day before I went in to get their prices. I had a Groupon. When I brought in my cleaning they had added on 35% more of extra charges. For my coat they added $8.00! I asked them why the price was different from what I was quoted and they said because i had cat hair on my coat. They were charging me $8.00 on a $19.95 bill to remove cat hair. I told them to lend me the lint brush and i would remove it myself. They said there was a additional charge to borrow the lint brush! I asked to speak to the owner and he wasn't in yet. I called when I returned home and he was out to lunch. My sweater had one strand of cat hair on it and they said they were charging for that removal as well. They have terrible customer service. How can you charge 35% to remove a few animal hairs! I won't be returning. read more

If this place was cheaper, it would be PERFECT and I'd give it 5 stars. Really, the only downside is the price. While it is expensive, you do get what you pay for. The staff are truly experts. I only go to Barry Regent with my designer clothes. The ones I would be truly devastated seeing damaged at another cleaner. I know that my clothes are in good hands with Barry Regent. Case in point, I had a white (slightly beaded) wool Chanel skirt that had a mysterious metallic stain on it that resembled a mixture of oil and paint. An old article in Vogue named a cleaner in the burbs as the "best." I traveled up to that cleaners and try as they might they could not remove the stain. Multiple other cleaners refused to even try. Finally, I took the skirt to Barry Regent and they removed the stain with no damage to the fabric! Bravo. read more
