After reading the reviews I had a good feeling about this place. Well I was wrong I came here for a simple oil and air filter change on my 2013 Chevy Cruze and now I have to take my car to be looked at because my fuel mileage is acting up. I have never had an issue with it, even after several oil changes and routine maintenance visits. And to now be having these issues is disheartening. My sons car needed an exhaust. They marked up a $188 part 300% !!!!! THEY WERE CHARGING ME $600 FOR AN EXHAUST PIPE I COULD BUY AT OREILLY FOR $188. This is not a normal mark up. When I questioned them, they said it is NORMAL for them to mark up their parts 300%. Took my 2016 vehicle in for trans flush, tech didn't want to touch the lines due to what appeared to be a leak and wet lines at the front of the engine. Took vehicle home and inspected to find the front main seal leaking causing oil residue on trans lines. Tech should know this just by looking at the type of fluid and oil front main seal area. I was just at the Bartel's Auto Clinic in Plainfield this morning to get an oil change. The service rep showed me that I was leaking oil. He brought me to my car and showed me where it was leaking from, why, and how they would fix it. I also needed my oil cooler transmission line replaced. I was very happy that they showed me what needed to be replaced. Some auto repair places and dealerships don't. I said go ahead with the work. I was also given a ride home so I did not have to wake my wife up to pick me up. My vehicle was fixed and I was extremely satisfied with the service and cost to fix my car. I usually do my own repairs and have been for 20+ years, but its been cold outside and let's face, I'm getting old. My ABS/VSA light came on my Acura and since I had just received a coupon for a free engine/ABS diagnostic I figured why not use it. Before I went in, I called and asked for a quote on how much the diagnostic would be. The guy said that he would need to do the diagnostic before he can tell me how much it would cost. HUH? I figured, OK, I still have the coupon in case I need to use it. So I made an appt and went in. I waited about 20 minutes, and the tech came back and said that they need to do a deeper diagnostics to find out the problem (s) which would take 1 hr and would cost $125. They said that my car had many, many codes that were reading all over the place, including my oil pressure. I knew they were full of B.S. I told them that I'd think about it and then they really tried their sales pitch that I should get the work done now and that they even have a loaner that they could give me. Nope. I'm not doing business like this. I called my local Acura dealer and they would do the diagnostics for $67.50. AND, would waive that charge if I chose to do the service repairs with them. The dealer knows my car well and its more than half the cost. Which would you choose? Luckily, I walked away and didn't have to pay anything. I only lost 20-30 munites of my time. read more

We have been getting our oil changed here for a few years, and the staff is always friendly. The mechanics give your car a fairly thorough look to see if there are any major issues. This takes a few extra minutes, and given the location, you can't really leave...just bring a book or your phone and you'll be fine! read more

Needed oil changed & they were running a special (like $25) + I had coupon for free a/c check so i decided to check this place out, as a 1st time customer. I knew it was time for coolant flush as well, but I deliberately chose not to mention it, just to see if they'd bring it to my attention. Upon checking all the fluids they assume I possibly had a leak or contamination somewhere within the coolant so they wanted to do diagnostic to be sure. Turns out all I needed was a flush and they wanted to charge well over $300 $169 for a flush is outrageous but charging $125 just to tell me what I already knew completely turned me off to this business. Obviously I declined the flush & upon picking up my vehicle I was charged $142.68 for their "diagnostic". Took it to Sears Auto & had them check it out, paid only $69.99 (reg.$89.99) for exactly what was wrong --only needed the coolant flushed. I basically paid Bertels $167 for a OIL CHANGE. I will never come here again & I would only recommend an oil change unless you just have money to burn. **sidenote** As I'm writing this review, had my son call to get a quote on coolant flush for a truck he was told they start at $109....go figure, maybe I should have had a man go in there with me for service read more

I had my vehicle's brakes serviced. They priced matched. I feel the gentleman behind the counter were very friendly and did everything they could to earn my business and trust. Their shop is very clean and organized. My repairs were done right the first time. They didn't try to sell or pressure me into getting any other repairs done(non safety). I really had a great experience. I noticed the short time I was there, no job was to small, they we happy to accommodate the customer request. I definitely recommend them!! read more

I appreciate how Bartel's obliged to complete a 4.5 hour job for me arriving around 2pm with a Saturday closing time of 5pm. Although an expensive job as my water pump had to be replaced (labor is the culprit), Bartel's went above and beyond. They even stayed past the closing time of 5pm to get the job done. Through all of this, the staff was extremely friendly and accommodating. They definitely put the customer first! They even offer a shuttle service and have loaner cars available when needed. Amazing! I highly recommend Bartel's. BTW, typically at car repair shops the bathrooms are not clean at all to the extent where I just won't use them no matter how bad I need to go. Well...not with Bartel's. I was so impressed with the cleanliness of the bathroom. May not be important to some, but a well maintained public bathroom is extremely important to me. Thank you. read more

I have never posted on yelp before but I felt the need to let people know just how Bartel's will try and overcharge you for a simple repair. My car was overheating this morning and I took it to Bartel's. After 3 hours with my car, they told me I needed a new radiator cap, a hose, a thermostat and a coolest flush, $309 dollars!!! My neighbor told me they were robbing me blind, that all I needed was a new radiator cap, which was not holding pressure, because it wasn't sealing properly when you tightened it, hence the overheating and my radiator being depleted of coolant. $12 dollar fix, drove it 8 miles and temperature gauge never went above normal or overheat which it would have if it was anything but the cap. They are very untrustworthy and try to overcharge their customers, my advice take your car somewhere else!!! read more

I took my 2014 chevy in for a routine oil change on Friday. The car has less than 40,000 miles on it. The girl called me in the back to "show me something". She rubbed her fingers along some part underneath the car and told me essentially that I had a substantial leak in my rack and pinion, it would affect the power steering, and that it was on the urgent end of things. She entered the data into her computer told me it would be a 6 hour job, and would cost $1400. I told her I would not be going ahead with that repair today, but could she write up the estimate for me to show my husband. She also told me that the technician heard a "clunking" noise when he drove it less than 500 feet into the garage from the parking spot. (We have NEVER heard any noise). Again she told me that they offered financing when I voiced my concern over spending that much money on a car we are still making monthly payments on with so little mileage and not being very old. Something in my gut told me to get a second opinion. I had my 2 year old daughter with me, and probably looked like an easy target to try to scam. My dad took the car for me today to get a second opinion with his mechanic at Merlin in Oak Forest. He did not tell this mechanic that there was potentially anything wrong with it. He wanted an unbiased opinion. The car came back passing with flying colors, and then my dad took out the paperwork from Bartels. He said that this was an estimate for repair work that I had gotten just three days prior. They agreed to look specifically at these parts for a double check, for some peace of mind. They even triple checked. Everything was fine. They even went so far as to say that Bartels did not replenish all the fluids that were covered in my full-service oil change, and showed my dad the half full radiator fluid and replenished it for me. They said Bartels did not lubricate the doors either (which they claim they did). They also pointed out grease stains inside my vehicle that were left by Bartels technicians as well, essentially meaning I did not get what I paid for, and an extra mess to clean up. I will never bring any of my vehicles here again. They tried to scam my family out of $1400 on a problem that was nonexistent. They used scare tactics on a mother with a small child with them. Shame on them. Don't be fooled like I was, and if you do go here, always take your vehicle in for a second opinion, for whatever repairs they say are "urgent" Stay far away. These mechanics know that Chevy and other mechanics are on strike and saw money signs when I walked in the door. Their mechanics are either incompetent or scammers. Not sure which is worse? I will be filing a claim with the BBB but save yourself the headache of even dealing with this company. read more

Clean place and friendly service but not sure I will go back because of the prices. Service wise it was fine as I had an appointment and was in and out for an oil change in the expected fashion. The issue I have is the car I now have (company provided) takes 0w-20 synthetic oil and quite frankly the pricing here for this type of an oil change is way out of line (even with dealer prices!). If your car takes normal oil I guess its ok but if your car takes synthetic be forewarned. read more

A hidden gem. This place was very clean and professional. They were pleasant and helpful. My car didn't pass the Emissions Test and that kinda freaked me out. They not only did that but I asked also for an oil change and my fan motor was frying out... They fixed EVERYTHING and informed me what the service technician recommended and how much everything would cost. Took my Grand Caravan to Bartel's because I kept hearing a noise coming from the from when I brake, especially when turning. They said I had a bad strut and really should replace them in pairs for $1,700. Since my Caravan has a lifetime warranty that covers the struts I took it to the dealer. There was no issue with the struts. It was just noise from the after market brakes. Dealer said they hear it sometimes with after market brakes and there was no need to replace the brakes. There was no issue other than the noise. I took it to another repair shop and they said the same thing the dealer said. So if you take you car here, I will never again, make sure you get another opinion, especially if it is a costly repair!!!! read more

Consider this a 0 star review, since I can't actually choose 0. I used these guys extensively for about 4 years. What broke the camel's back was my 2002 GMC Envoy, which began giving me problems soon after I bought it. In the two years I owned it, I'd say I spent around $6000 at Bartel's. The final straw came when they claimed it needed a new transmission. I ask them if they think the vehicle is worth saving. Specifically, I ask them to put in on a lift and look underneath. I know the truck has some rust, but I want to make sure that it is structurally sound enough to warrant investing this kind of money into. They assure me the truck is fine and that, under their recommendation, it's worth spending $2500 on. Sigh...fine. $2500 later and I get a call from them saying it is done. I walk a mile and a half to get it, they hand me the keys, I jump in, fire it up, and drive away...only to find that the 'new' transmission, or 'rebuilt,' or whatever their claim is, slips horribly in first, skips second directly to third, and won't go into overdrive. Did you guys test drive this thing before you took my money?! I of course turn right around to complain. They have it for another week, and then call to say it is now done, for real this time. And, to compensate for my inconvenience, they offer to spray the underside with a rustproofing material. But I thought you guys said the underside wasn't rusty? Oh well...sure, spray it. Whatever gets you to sleep at night. Two months later the transmission is acting funny again. Also, I notice that the spare tire, which mounts under the rear of the vehicle, is hanging at a funny angle. No problem, I think to myself. I'll just take it to Bartel's and have them look at the transmission, which is under warranty. Also, I'll have them fix the spare tire carrier. Their response, after having the truck for two weeks: a) We can't test drive the vehicle because it's not safe. Too rusty. We have to cut out the spare tire carrier before we can investigate further. That was $300 right there. b) We can't recreate the problem you "claim' you're having. Oh, you mean the problem is exactly the same problem I had when I brought it in two months ago and you said it needed a new transmission? These guys are in it for the fast buck. Their workmanship is shoddy, and their morals in my opinion are questionable. I would strongly recommend you to look elsewhere for service on your vehicle. read more

While I was headed to school the other day, I realized I had a flat tire. Luckily I was near Bartel's and was able to pull in. Since I was unable to drive on the flat without causing damage, one of the workers took my tire off, drove it to the Just Tires down the street, and came back with a new tire (approved by me). They put the tire on for me and I was on my way. They definitely went the extra mile for me and it was much appreciated. read more

I recently had my car in for servicing last week at the Bartels in Plainfield. I was there to get new tires and strut replacements. In talking with Alex, I asked him about my tire choices as I wanted tires that were better for highway driving and did not sound so loud. He recommended a new tire from Yokohama and I am very pleased with them after driving with them for about a week. When they were changing out my struts, they noticed the control arms going bad. They also sent me pictures so I could make my own determination as well. Since my car has over 200,00 miles, I figured it was time to replace theses as well. The work was done promptly and effectively and I am very happy with their professionalism and keeping me informed of the status of my car repair. After reading the reviews we decided to try this place. Unfortunately, we did not have a great experience. We brought our car in because it was making a loud noise. They quoted us over $1200 to repair the problem. Before giving them the go ahead, we called several other places for a quote. The quotes were $400-$500 cheaper. After bringing this to their attention they agreed to charge $800 for the repair. Since they already had our car we said go ahead. After the repair, the car was still making a loud sound so we brought it back for them to check and they said it was now a different problem and it would cost over $400 to fix. Again we called around for other quotes (including the dealer) and were quoted $115 to fix. Needless to say we took it somewhere else and will NOT be bringing our vehicles back to Bartel's. The staff at Bartel's was very nice and knowledgeable but unnecessarily OVERPRICED! read more

I have to say that I gave them multiple chances and was very unhappy with the quality of their work each time. Each time my wife and I have taken our cars in, there was a problem or mistake discovered after. The most recent three incidents were: 1. I had antifreeze flush and refill - Two days later I was checking wiper fluid under hood and saw the antifreeze reservoir cap was left off and the tank empty 2. Brought vehicle in because of brakes squeaking - after alleged cleaning and resurfacing, my breaks squeak far more than before. Originally, it was only occasionally. After service they squeak loud every time I use them. 3. Wife had battery replaced. When she recently took it to the Dealer, a few months later, the mechanic said her battery was low and also the wrong size. The dealer verified that the battery was bad and there was no other issue. Manager was relatively polite when these were brought to his attention, although he did say "everybody makes mistakes". That does not change that fact that they repeatedly make careless errors. With so many alternatives available, there is no reason to use this business. They do very sloppy work and I do not trust them. read more

I took my car for a trans flush service and I was given a quote without filter change and another quote with the filter change. I took the one with filter change and I remember clearly it was around $187 out the door. When I came back to pick up the car it was over $236 and was telling me some story which I did not believe. I told him the $187 quote and he was denying it. I said I wish I had a recorder with me when you quoted the amount. He is making a liar out of me. This is the one that irritated me. This is the 3rd time I have used this place and the last. i was also charged $15.95 for Shop Supplies, Environmental Fees $4.50. In July, I spoke with Joe at Bartels and asked him if fixing my husband's 2006 Monte Carlo was worth it and he shared that the car would be in good shape once it was fixed; since that is a lot of money for our family. He assured me that it was a good car and we should go through with the repairs because everything else was in good working order. He let me know there would be a wait so I asked how long. His reply: About AN HOUR. At 10:00am, they're already an hour behind?!?!? Why even make an appointment? I will never go back. We have multiple problems with them. My son's car died while he was driving it. It started right back up, becuase he is a new driver, we wanted to get this looked at right away. We were told he needed a new idle valve. They also slid in $200 of extra stuff. I asked them to break down the $700 quote. I realized about the extra $200 of stuff that was not necessary. A month or so later, the car did the same thing. It randomly died. It happened twice and we took it back, this time they kept it for a week and could not get it to repeat it. I then googled what was going on with the car. Found out there was a recall on the ignition switch. Called Bartel's to see why they attempted to repair something that was not broken, and never looked up any recalls. It literally took me 5 minutes to find the problem. Took it to Honda of Joliet... fixed it (for free) and have never had that problem again. Also same car.... Before the abover issue we had something fixed with the exhaust system. I don't recall the actually part. But was told, and later called to confirm, that the part they put in was new. Since I will no longer go back, we took the car to Honda of Joliet and that part was bad, again, and it needed a new valve. Honda told me that there was not a new part, possibly a refurbished part, but definately not new. The valve that was bad, should have been replaced with the new part. They suggested I go back and have them replace... should do it for free. I refused to go back Honda fixed it, discounted it for me. I am now a loyal customer of Honda of Joliet!! read more

After being ripped off by Firestone down the street I made a visit to Bartel's knowing something was still wrong with my car. I was kindly informed that the work was never really done, and was shown what and how they "fixed" the problem. Needless to say, I was throughly impressed with the crew at Bartel's. They took the time to educate me on the issues that needed to be addresses and broke down what needed immediate attention and what could be put off until later. This was a huge relief as budgets are tight and had lost a lot to the other shop. I have continued to go to Bartel's for all my car needs since. The guys at the front of the shop are always so courteous and want you to understand every step of the process. The mechanics are the same, honest and so nice. They are willing to take the time to point out issues and explain what is going on, as well as the basic mechanics behind them. This very appreciated as I am not a car guy and I feel like I learn something new every time I stop in. Their prices are fair and better then a lot of other shops, down the street. Customer service was great. It was a friendly environment from the first phone call to the pick up after service was complete. Took my 6 year old SUV in for an AC check. Felt it was a little pricey since it was just freon, a charge and a $3 part to fix the leak but it was clean and the people were easy to work with. read more
