I am going to be honest here. I stopped in for an emergency, my kia soul was misfiring and this was the closest place to me. I was thankful at the time that Vince got me in right away because I was on my way to work and my son had a half day of school that day. They ran a diagnostic on my misfire and told me that they had to change 2 spark plugs but there was still a misfire. They supposedly changed all 4 spark plugs and told me that my coils were good and pressure was fine signifying a deeper cylinder issue. While I was waiting I heard Vince say to 2 customers about their oil change price being around $50. I ask them to add that if they had time and he mentioned for my car it would be less than $50. He mentioned they like to do oil changes with little profit margin to keep customers happy. As I was being explained by Vince how my engine was probably past repair and they had to order a better diagnostic tool to further assess my misfire and how they could source a used engine if needed (since i couldnt afford to replace this vehicle with a used one, which they suggested I should do) I had to leave by noon to get my son from the bus. The mechanic came in saying they did not perform the oil change yet then goes back on the shop floor and comes right back out saying someone else did it and he just needed to add the sticker to my car. I left with a slightly better running engine still misfiring but had no choice. while I waited for the new diagnostic tool to arrive. 3 days go by, no update so I call and I am told the tool arrived damaged. I decided to tow it to the dealership for a second opinion where they told me my coil was bad. I then took it to a 3rd mechanic for their opinion where he showed me that I had less than a qt of dirty oil and a slightly rusted rim of an old oil filter signifying Tuffy did not perform the oil change but certainly did charge me for it. I also had to replace all 4 spark plugs again, unsure if they even changed them all in the first place. I was given the run around when I confronted them about the lack of service. They finally refunded me for my oil change only. PLEASE MAKE SURE BEFORE YOU LEAVE THAT THEY ACTUALLY PERFORM THE WORK YOU PAID FOR. I have been scammed by not just this plainfield tuffys but batavia as well (not doing an inspection before performing work on my breaks and a few other small repairs and failing to notify me the condition of my frame, they did make it right by inspecting at least 6 used cars for free) and my brother in law has been scammed by the aurora tuffys (telling him his car was a loss when it was a simple fix). I am a woman but I am not dumb and helpless and I will not be preyed upon by untrustworthy mechanics! If you schedule a serious service here I highly suggest you get a second opinion from a different shop and ALWAYS check your oil before you leave. NEVER will I support a tuffys again!! this place doesn't even get a star because of how they did me. I took my vehicle up there because of my hood release cable had became disconnected. I asked them how much would they charge me to connected. I was told that I needed to replace it. I took with a grain of salt and was like ok how much? I was told $908 to replace it. Mind you the only place to get the part is the dealership and I looked around . the part it's self cost $150. The rest of the cost is labor. I see that they said it's 5hrs of labor. Like how when its a 30 min job. Ain't no way, so I took it down the street and they connected it for free and told me that the cable just became loose and there isn't anything wrong with the cable. It wasn't frozen or rust as the mechanic and clerk claimed it was. They lied and I asked how much an evap canister replacement cost they told me that it's $165 diagnostic fee after reading that the code said it needed to be replaced and they had to make sure that it wasn't the problem . they are full of it. Gave them 5 stars because the bathrooms and lobby are clean:) I got my oil changed and front struts replaced and front brakes and rotors done. Its only been a couple of days, but so far everything is working fine. Customer service is great, everyone was really nice and professional. I didn't feel pressured at all about the things that were recommended to me. (Maybe because I know my car is older and needed the work.) They even helped me prioritize what was most important and potential safety hazard because I couldn't afford to get everything done at once. Will definitely be back to get the other stuff done. I was absolutely thrilled with my experience here! We were in a pinch, having been driving for hours and then hearing a couple of disturbing noises coming from the wheel. Tuffy's provided outstanding service, and got us in right away. They looked at it, quickly diagnosed the problem, and had it fixed within minutes! I am SO appreciative of the great service and the thorough and accurate work on our car! I mean, they offered to make coffee for us while we waited, they got us in right away, they didn't try to sell us unnecessary work, and they knew we were traveling and could have easily taken advantage of our situation (I happened to have just read other reviews here before writing my review, and I couldn't disagree more), but did not. PLEASE BEWARE OF THIS PLACE! Do not bring your car in if it needs more than an oil change. Chris the assistant manager and Ron the regional manager have no idea what they are doing and very unprofessional. I brought my car in to check an engine light and a failed emissions test. Diagnostics cost me 167 dollars. They were not able to probably diagnose my car and figure out what was wrong after 2 attempts. The first day all they tried to do was "clear" the computer to make the check engine light go off. Of course it went back on. Brought it in a second time and my car sat there for 8 hours without it being looked at. Apparently the regional manager, Ron had to go there to look at it because no one else in the shop that day was certified to figure out what was going wrong. He was not able to figure it out either. They told me to bring my car in a third time but I just wanted a refund. Literally after two days of them having my car, it sat there without being looked at and they couldn't figure out what was going wrong. They refused to give me my money back. Chris never communicated with me and always directed my concerns to Ron. Ron was very unprofessional. He told me I was being unreasonable. Please do not bring your car into this place! They took my money and had no answers for what was wrong with my car! I will be contacting Better Business Bureau and filing a report on this place. read more

Might be fine for a routine oil change, but I wouldn't trust them to diagnose more issues. We asked them to check some brakes that were riding a little funny and they gave us an estimate for $600 to fix what they thought was necessary to fix. Gut feeling that it was unnecessary so we declined the service and took it to another mechanic. That mechanic said there was some wear but that no repairs were necessary. Bottom line - we felt they were out to make a buck. read more

Steer clear of this place for anything but an oil change. Had them re-do the radiator, fan, water pump and fan clutch on my project car last year, and haven't driven it much this winter, but started to have over-heat issues. Brought it to a different shop after the manager and service tech I worked with had left, and found out that they had installed the wrong pump and fan for my vehicle! Unfortunately for me, the harsh winter and cool spring didn't identify the issue sooner, but I'd recommend of really thinking twice before going to a repair shop that can't tell the difference between a v-belt versus serpentine belt configuration to know what parts to order. Even though I have to pay for the rework at more reputable place, I was lucky that their mistake didn't do serious damage to my car. Buyer Beware! read more

I was taken. So angry. I was told a price on fixing a rattle in engine of 2700. I said my car is not worth it to me to put that kind of money into. Jeremy proceeded to take me into his office and tell me I have an Audi Engine so good that even for with 150,000 miles he can get my convertible roof to work and take care of the rattle with suspension work. Next came roof breakdown when I used once, then came another roof bill of 500.00 When I originally picked up he had me pay first then roof didnt work. When I saw scratches and roof not operating he said he would order all new parts and some paint. When I went back like he said, to drop off car he did not have parts. When I called he did not answer. Needless to say $2700 , my roof does not work, it leaks, and my car is dented and scratched. he now says he left me many messages yet I have none. Roof scratched and dented (hard top convertible) and somehow this is all my fault. Three weeks later engine fell. Two months later key for tire lock not in my car. I was not looking forward to going to any auto business after my last oil change at Bartel's. But my experience at Tuffy was the opposite of Bartel's, and I will definitely go back to Tuffy for my oil changes. I had a coupon for $19.99 and called about a week ago to make an appointment. Making the appointment was easy. I showed up at 9:00 a.m. today, and I was in and out in about 45 minutes. There are two big leather sofas to sit & relax while you wait. The lady working the register offered to turn on the TV for me. There were a variety of magazines as well: Sports Illustrated, People, and a copy of yesterday's Chicago Tribune. I skimmed an old issue of People and played with my phone. I got cozy pretty quickly and could've taken a nap! One of the guys who worked on my car came into the waiting area and briefly, but thoroughly explained that the car needed new struts and tires. We already knew about the tires, but I made a mental note about the struts. He was straightforward and clear in his explanation. He did not try to get me to schedule any additional appointments or tack on additional services. Compared to other experiences, this was a breath of fresh air. As usual, I'll ask my mechanic (I mean, Dad) to check out the struts before I sink money into the car. But for now I have no reason to believe that Tuffy was trying to manipulate me. Took my car here for an oil change and they forgot to put the cap back on after adding oil. By the time I got home, my engine was smoking from all the burning oil on it. I was late to work because I had to wait for them to come out to my house with a cap, more oil & to clean my car up. I still have oil on my garage floor and the inside of my car smells like burning oil. They called to apologize and asked me to leave a good review for them. Sent daughter with camry for estimate on leaking exhaust they took upon self (without permission) to open hood and claim that the timing belt was bad and the oil pan gasket was leaking plus power steering was leaking. When they were told timing was replaced not long ago comment was good for you and tried to insist it was dangerous to drive trying to get daughter to ok work. Daughter text me and told me what was said I told her tell them take off lift and get keys then leave there which she did. She brought me car next day I then found what they wrote on oil pan with paint stick F*ck and covered the drain plug with same bright yellow paint to make it harder to remove plug. I Definitely DO NOT RECOMMEND THEM!! I had them look into an issue my vehicle was having. $95 for a diagnostic in order to find the issue. He quoted me over $1000.00 for repairs. I declined, because the quote seemed to pricey and I felt that they were not confident that the repairs they recommend for my vehicle needed would fix the problem. I felt he had an attitude after I declined the repairs (via phone). When I picked my vehicle up, someone broke a piece on the interior( not related to the repair) and didn't inform me. I took it right back to them and they fixed it, but made it seem like it was no big deal and I was make a big deal over it. I feel most places would had tried harder to get my business, like offer a discount or lower the cost to make it a little more affordable. I don't enjoy giving bad reviews! I made an appointment to get an oil change with a special I received in the mail. The clerk said that instead of $16.95, my oil change would be $69.99 because it uses "special oil". I didn't know 5w30 was special oil, my car does not even require a synthetic blend. When I said that QuickLube has done it in the past for less than $30.00, the clerk said "we'll you better take it back to them". If you want to get ripped off and be treated like garbage, then by all means, go to Tuffy Auto Service in Plainfield. If you want good service, go somewhere else. read more
