We visited Bartley's because it had a well deserved writeup in The newest edition of the "Road Food AnEater's Guide Across America". The reviewer who had been in the restaurant the day before and had complained about cold food must have been too busy talking rather than enjoying this great barbecue. I had the 1/2 rack of ribs and my other half had the three meat combo. The portions were huge and we could only eat half of it. They even make their own baked beans (2 different types). Each of the meals came with a delicious yeasty sweet roll-yum! Shane the owner made the rounds to make sure everyone was satisfied with their food. Their home brewed ice tea was very satisfying. We had the pecan cobbler and took a brownie to go. All of their rolls, cookies, and brownies are baked in the bakery next door. We will definitely return to Bartley's the next time we are in Grapevine! read more

I have eaten at Bartley's since it was on Main St. In Grapevine over 20 years ago. I think they did things right then and maybe even better now. In the times of high priced bbq these folks have kept serving quality food at reasonable prices. I've had them cater events at my office and I eat there about every 2 weeks. Nice to have a place where you can still get 1,2 or 3 meat plates and pick your own sides. Of course you can always get meats by the pound. They treat customers right and offer a consistent product which is tough in the bbq world. They do a lot of things well. Love their brisket and Cajun turkey. A lot of bbq joints are putting out awesome brisket these days. Everything else kind of comes up short. Not the case here. The ribs are much better than all the nearby bbq joints getting more notoriety. The ribs are my favorite here!!! TLC put in to the ribs unlike much of the competition. OMG! My husband has been coming here for over 30 yrs. He introduced me to this place 5 yrs ago. It was pretty good back then but Covid has defiantly taken its tole. We stopped in today and we should have left. Hardly anybody there and the man serving the meat was more interested in talking to a couple that was picking up an order. We waited and waited. Didn't need to worry cause there was nobody else in line. The plates have been downsized to a tiny platter, the sliced brisket was dry and hard and looked more like pot roast. And I asked for the fatty more moist brisket. Essentially sliced, more like chunks cut off the ends. Almost like pulled brisket. The amount was was maybe the size of an ice cream scoop. The ribs were short and not very meaty. Plus they were of very poor quality. More gristle and garbage than meat. They too were dry and hard. Both looked like they had been cooked a long time ago and had just been sitting out uncovered. Mac and cheese wasn't anything special. The best part of the whole meal was the fresh cut frys that we had to ask them to cook for us. They were gonna give us some cold stragglers that were in a steam table pan. The fountain soda tasted watered down, not much carbonation. And had a funny taste. The rolls which are usually good, I couldn't eat after buttering. The "butter" was 45% vegetable oil and tasted funny. So after spreading it on my roll, I couldn't even eat it. Later my husband and I both got diarrhea from eating there. Save your money and time and go to a better BBQ place. Makes me sad because it used to be good. But we won't go back because the foods terrible and it made up sick. read more

We came here for lunch and got so lucky! Brisket is hit or miss but this place does it right. Smoke ring was perfect and brisket doesn't need any bbq sauce. We loved everything we ate and for BBQ the prices can't be beat. We did a stuffed potato with chopped brisket, a chopped brisket sandwich and a sliced brisket sandwich. Our small kiddos loved it too. I Flove this place! I unfortunately have never had the chance to eat in the actual restaurant but I have used them to cater 600 people every year at work for the past 7 years. Casey and Heather the catering girls are absolutely amazing! They are professional, prompt and overly helpful. The food is always top notch- it arrives fresh, hot and we always have plenty left over! I will say that I am repeatedly guilty of hoarding extra cream cheese brownies at out annual BBQ- they are so addicting! If you have never tried it stop by next time you are in the area- if they restaurant serves the same items as the catering menu you will be in heaven! read more

Great BBQ joint for the area. Great price for a quick lunch. I'm very picky when it comes to Texas BBQ. I found Bartley's when I started working in the area and I was looking for something to eat one day. While driving I smelled something great...BBQ! It's located in a strip mall and the atmosphere reminded me of soup kitchen. When it comes to BBQ, I really don't care about the atmosphere except the warm kindness you find from the person serving you which (most-of-the-time) you will see in Texas BBQ joints. I'll never go back if the people aren't kind. Bartley's people are kind and very inviting. When it comes to BBQ joints, I always get two things. The brisket and sausage. Bartley has a great brisket. Not dry. Juicy and a good smoke flavor. Excellent enough that I'll keep on going for lunch. Sausage is regular Eckrich, I believe. Wasn't good to my standard, but it was juicy and watery like Eckrich Sausages. You can tell it was smoked, but I like mine with a little more cooked. They have other items but I never get these at BBQ joints, half/quarter chickens, bologna, ribs, ham, sandwiches, pork butt or chops (i can't remember?) and sliced turkey breast. The barbecue sauce is mediocre, but warm. The good thing about it.. it had a sweetness to it which I like. The sides. I always take mine to-go and given two sides (Dine-ins are unlimited sides). Green beans - great flavor, seasoned just right with bacon. Potato salad - Just like normal potato salad, still good. Okra - Crunchy and not soggy, passes my test. Cole slaw - Haven't tried it, I'm very particular when it comes to cole slaw, and it didn't look right to me. Drumroll please... they have an awesome, AWESOME jalapeño potato bites. Its like tater-tots with a hint of jalapeño. It goes fast. Bartley's is good enough for anyone that needs a quick BBQ fix that's in the area. I kind of have to disagree with with Otis about the brisket. Their brisket was really good in the fact that it was lean but yet very tender and just fell apart with minimal fork action. I had the Brisket Plate which came with 2 sides, but I got an additional side. I had the bbq beans which were different from the kinds that I had other places; it did have a strong brown sugar taste to it, but nevertheless good. Their macaroni salad was good as well, but tasted alot like the kind you can buy in bulk from Sam's. For my extra side I got the jalapeno tots. I think if it was a little hotter (temp-wise) it might have tasted better. To take home with me for later, I also got about 2 lbs in ribs and when reheated it tasted fine. I also got some of their Pecan Cobbler. This was one of my primary reasons for checking this place out. The Owner's brother does the baked goods from what I understood, and he's starting up a bakery right next door. You can walk straight into it from the BBQ joint. So the Pecan Cobbler was like pecan pie, but without the crust and it was not as sweet. That's just more of a reason to eat more of it! Sauce analysis: When I had the sauce with my brisket it tasted like as if it had ketchup in it. However, after it sat in the fridge for a couple of days and reheating, it tasted like normal BBQ sauce. I'm not sure of the science behind it, but it tasted good to me both ways read more

Please Do Some Dusting!. Let me start by saying the food was above average. I had ribs and chopped brisket and the ribs were ++. The sides were also more flavorful than most typical Texas BBQ, but PLEASE do some cleaning! The decor was old and dusty - not rustic, dirty! One of the ceiling fans had no blades! Visited Bartley's on a recommendation from a co-worker while I was visiting Texas. This restaurant is in Grapevine, not too far from my hotel in Southlake. We found the restaurant, which is in a small shopping center and walked in to find a shabby-looking restaurant. I know from experience you tend to find the best barbecue in restaurants that look shabby. So my hopes were high. I asked the lady what was good and she not only pointed at everything, but she touched it too. Kind of odd. I decided to try the "two meat" plate, with pork ribs and sliced pork. I chose BBQ beans (spicy, not sweet) and collard greens. The meal came with a dinner roll, and I had sweet tea to drink. The ribs were a little fatty, but what ribs aren't? Overall they were outstanding. Real smoky flavor and fall-off-the-bone tenderness. The pork was nicely pink, meaning it was nicely smoked. The BBQ sauce that comes with the meal was nice and tangy, and overall I enjoyed the main entrees. The sides weren't so good. The BBQ beans seemed a little undercooked and hard, and the collard greens were bitter and flavorless. Disappointing. The sweet tea was good and the dinner roll was fresh from a bag and fresh from the store. Not homemade. Overall it was inexpensive - $23 for two full meals. This is inexpensive for a guy who lives in San Francisco. It may be pricey for others. Just three stars, since the sides weren't good at all. read more

This was my first time visiting. The place was clean because the young man working in the sitting area kept it that way. :-) I must say, the staff was kind & friendly. I ordered the special. (chopped beef sandwich, a side & a drink) I also added a brownie with the chopped nuts on top. The beef was already chopped in a container & an ice cream scoop was used to dip it out. I thought they would have sliced some brisket and then chop it up. I didn't like it. The coleslaw was OK, but the brownie was old and dried out. I didn't say anything to management about it because that is not what I do; I will just not visit again. The sides did not look very appealing, but it is possible they taste good.The barbecue sauce was not good at all; it taste like vinegar, no sweetness to it at all. This place is special... Ownership is fantastic! Come here for things that are different, like bologna and pork loin. As well the sides like the spicy pinto beans and spicy bbq sauce are the things you must try. Always ask for samples but due to the fact I was shorted a side and the chopped brisket was more of a sloppy joe style meat lowers my rating. Food is as delicious as the service is friendly! I don't know why it took so long for us to try this place. It felt like stepping into the kitchen of a family friend. I'm usually not a huge fan of BBQ mostly because the sides seem always to be the same and not very interesting. BUT! I really loved the jalapeno, cheese, tater tots! Scrumptious! I'd come back just for them, but the chopped beef was tender and moist. I also liked that they serve dinner rolls instead of bread slices. OMG and their cookies looked so amazing. I didn't eat any...well I ate a half dozen with my eyes, but don't think I wasn't tempted!! I love old man Bartley's food. I would have never expected to find a bbq joint in this shopping area. I think their sammich lunch special is just out of this world. You get one side and drink to go with the pulled pork. There hasn't been a time that they didn't put enough meat to make two sandwiches on that plate. Let's not forget you get to serve your own sides so that means you should pile it on :) I can't get over their mac & cheese....outstanding!!! This place is becoming run down and feels like certain things are out of place(drink station). Now i don't discount this place too much for that, after all it is texas bbq and i don't feel i should be dinning in a fine restaurant when i eat bbq. Never the less proper upkeep would really go a long ways. The staff are as friendly as can be. It seems like they know everyone who walks in. Oh and before i forget you can keep your Bartley's plastic cup and get $1 off your drink if you bring it in again. Really mediocre bbq in a city known for good bbq. Cajun Turkey was ok. Smoked sausage didn't taste any different than something you could buy packaged at Kroger. Roll was good. Cole slaw didn't have enough dressing. Banana pudding looked good but they said it wasn't made in-house so we didn't try it. For 3 of us it was about $45 after tip. At that price point we could have had a heck of a meal at Hard 8. Probably won't be back. read more

Sam is a genius! I had the ribs and brisket plate. Ribs fell of the bone, and the brisket was juicy and tender, melted in your mouth. Sides were green beans and Mac and cheese. Best Mac and cheese I've ever had. My buddies has the Cajun turkey and sausage, tried those and was blown away by the juiciness of the turkey. Topped it off with pecan pie. So. Good. My most recent visit at Bartley's yielded dry, tasteless brisket (sandwich grade stuff), despite that I asked for the fatty cut with some bark on it. I'm beginning to suspect that I'm being served up day-old leftover meats because I've never really seen them bring me anything straight from the smoker--despite the smoke-filled dining space. A shame really, because of all their meats, I order the brisket and smoked bologna regularly. Here's to hoping their Texas Monthly BBQ list inclusion doesn't worsen the quality of their meats. I ate here last year while on a business trip. I remembed it since I plan to return this week whileon the same trip this year. A great place. Last year I bought lunch and got the brisket and loved it. Than the next day I returned and got a selection to bring home on the plan. The family also loved it. Great smoked flavor, I do love this little BBQ places in TX. I can not wait to get back to the freeport or Austin area to go back to some of favorites. Unassuming little restaurant but OH the food was great. I enjoyed a chicken beast, not at all dry. Both the potato salad and coleslaw were tasty and left me wanting more. My dining companion had the brisket and sausage which I tasted, again they did not disappoint. Upon entering they had a table with large cinnamon rolls individually packaged, I brought one home. Next morning I heated in the microwave and was only able to eat a little more then half, great purchase. Our HOA will be ordering our holiday party food from them and look forward to more great food. They made me HAPPY! I haven't had any Texas BBQ in 2 years. I had a 3 hour drive to Abilene and a dinner engagement ahead of me, so I planned to go light and have just a turkey sandwich, which I remember being REALLY good. Staff tried to talk me into all you can eat, so I compromised with a sampler plate. I took one bite of the first rib, and asked if I could upgrade to the all you can eat. I was told yes. BBQ joints are hard to score. Most cant, or shouldn't in my opinion, be judged on appearance. It's all about the flavor. Bartley's is in a strip mall next to a laundrymat. Not much to look at. On Friday nights there is a local man that sings old country and western songs from a music machine. My son loves to go hear him sing; he calls him the "Cowboy" becuase he wears a big cowboy hat. It's quaint and homey feeing. My family enjoys the brisket, chopped beef, sausage and ham. My favorite is the ribs. I've tried unsuccessfully to replicate the rub and treatment used on these ribs, I think the ribs at Bartley's are some of the best I've had anywhere in the world, and I travel alot. I think the chicken quarters are a little too dry. And as another poster mentioned, most of the sides are right out of a food service package. Adequate, but not geat. Also, the pecan cobbler is awesome. So are the brownies. If you want good BBQ without the fuss, for a really good price, try Bartley's! read more

Best barque I've ever had. I ordered the pulled pork sandwich it was done on a fresh made bun had mild flavor very moist. Husband ordered 3 meat plate had dry rub chicken breast, shredded beef(amazingly wonderful) and sausage. Everything was good nothing was dry or greasy.
