I like to give restaurants more than one chance if the first visit leaves more to be desired; however, the owner has made that impossible. First, the soda machine may need a good cleaning as none of the sodas we tried tasted quite right. Then, the catfish was inedible. The texture was rubbery and it was extremely difficult to cut into. I tried one bite and it was awful and seemed unsafe to eat. Something definitely went wrong in the kitchen. However, when this was brought to the owner's attention, he didn't apologize but instead tried to guilt me, the customer, with, "Aw, you didn't like my catfish?" The staff at the register showed him the catfish and I directly told him it was inedible and explained why. His response? "That's ok. You're not hurting my feelings." It wasn't personal and it's weird that he tried to make it about him. I doubt a single soul wants to eat rubbery catfish. A simple apology would have gone a lot further. read more

Came on a weekend evening and there was a line waiting. Place was busy and bustling, but food was coming out in a timely manner. Live music on the outdoor porch. It was quite hot, but with the way the interior is built, it is a given the ventilation isn't too well - old and rustic. Banana pudding was yummy, however, there was a brunette piece of hair lodged in it. Sanitation overall was still clean; hair tied up, gloves used, etc so I'm sure it was an honest mistake. However, it ruined my dessert appetite so -1 star. Brisket was absolutely delicious and well-seasoned. You know how the meat sometimes looks gray? Not here. It was heavenly and not crazy fatty. Sullivan's is the top BBQ in best overall experience. Street parking is whacko, requiring cars to back into parking spots. However, once parked, walking up to the restaurant is great. The building has that iconic old BBQ restaurant vibe with a large patio with picnic tables. When stepping inside, you're enthusiastically greeted by the staff. The cashier asks if it's your first time, and if it is...more enthusiasm fills the restaurant. Once you order, the cashier hands you a buzzer. You pick your order up from the pickup area when it buzzes. They offer three types of brisket cuts; fatty, mixed and lean. We've had the fatty which melts in your mouth, but will get the mixed next time for the chew. The flavor is good and smoky, but the fatty cut didn't keep me from devouring it. The ribs have an excellent salty rub and fall off the bone. I appreciate the 3 BBQ sauce options; original, bourbon and habenero. All 3 are delicious and the habenero isnt too spicy. The cheddar sausage has a good amount of cheddar cheese. They have a condiment bar with pickles, onions and jalapenos. We love the pork empenadas, the pork feels like a creamy porky paste deliciousness with a crust like that of a puff pastry. It was so flaky and almost muted the pork. The ladies restroom is a single seater, but it is very clean and decorated with the care of a homeowner. Terry Sullivan even graces your table to check in and make you feel welcome in his restaurant. While the service was outstanding, the food, unfortunately, did not meet expectations. I ordered the two-meat combo plate featuring ribs and jalapeño sausage, which came with two sides, Grandma's collard greens and fried okra. Jalapeño Sausage: This was the highlight of the meal. Cooked to perfection with excellent flavor. Ribs: Disappointing. Although they were smoked, they lacked seasoning and were very bland. Grandma's Collard Greens: Underwhelming. They were undercooked and had an overpowering vinegar taste. Fried Okra: Just okay. Edible but nothing memorable. I had heard many great things about this place before visiting, so I came in with high expectations. Sadly, my first visit was a letdown and felt like a waste of $28. Their brisket is soooo juicy and they have so many choices for sides. Their pork rib portion great for the price!! The picture on the website has pico, grated cheese and sour cream and looked delicious. Mine was just liquid cheese, chips and chopped brisket. Now the brisket was VERY good mind you. But, it looked better with all the "loaded" toppings. Loaded to me means loaded. Not just cheese and meat. I loved that they had smoked cabbage as a side, which is super unique. The corn muffins were decent but I would pass next time (they weren't warm either). I try not to review the same places twice but I have to for Sullivan Texas BBQ! Stopped in because I needed another Nacho fix and once again they were awesome! We also had a combo plate with Brisket, Corn, Mac and Cheese, and Collard Greens. Those Collard Greens are phenomenal, full of flavor and perfectly tender. Both entrees came with a delicious house made roll and cinnamon butter that we an amazing dessert. I did see a sweet lady handing our Cinnamon Rolls. She ran out just before our table, but she really just saved me from shoving that cinnamon roll in when I was already full. :). I will be back for sure and I hope I can get one next time.
