I took three Persian rugs to this store for cleaning. Two came out fine, but one was returned with ripples (see picture). I left the rug on the floor for a few weeks hoping the ripples would settle, but they did not. I asked Baseer to take a look and fix the issue, but he denied that the rippling had anything to do with the washing--which is simply not true, as the rug was perfectly fine beforehand. He then charged me an additional $175 to "fix" the rug, but he was unable to do so. The rug still has ripples, and now it is also stretched out of shape (see pictures). When I confronted him about the poor quality of work, instead of taking responsibility, he repeatedly accused me of lying, raised his voice, and even said he never works with people of my background and nationality. This was despite the fact that I had already paid for his poor service and was only voicing a legitimate concern about customer service. To be fair, Baseer's prices are reasonable, but that is probably the only positive thing about his business. Unfortunately, the rug in question had deep sentimental value for us, and now it has been ruined. All he did was accuse me of lying while charging me for services he did not properly deliver. My experience with Baseer has been nothing but superb -- because of his professionalism, his focus on serving his clients, his talents and the quality of his work, and his reasonable pricing. It all started when Basser answered his work phone at 9pm on a Friday night two weeks ago (I had planned to leave him a message). He took my info and called me back the next morning, as arranged. When Baseer came to my home the following Monday afternoon, we focused on two rugs - a small silk handmade Turkish that was in need of deep cleaning only and a 50-year old, 9'x14' green and ivory Indo-Chinese medallion rug. This rug was severely and unevenly faded, had damage on a small border area due to resting under a heavy upholstered chair, a few 1-inch "pock marks" in ivory areas of the rug, and badly "eaten-up" and uneven fringe. . He worked with me on an approach that would bring the large rug back to life - stunning and "whole' but, per my preference, showing small imperfections of age. And would keep the price in a range I was willing to spend at this point in time. After showing me some interim pictures post-repair, I realized it would be insane not to spend a little more to re-fringe the rug. Both rugs were back on my floors the following Monday afternoon and laid down by Baseer and his lovely wife, Veda. Already, I've gotten several "ooohs and aahs" from the small number of people who have seen the rugs. Baseer left last Monday afternoon with one more rug - a Chinese English Garden woolen runner that hadn't been cleaned since I bought it in 1991/92. The pictures Beseer sent this morning, after it was cleaned, show such bright colors that it almost looks like a different rug. And it also looks new, since he also re-fringed it. In addition to being a delightful individual, Baseer is very knowledgeable and talented (he does some of the detailed color restoration himself). He loves his work, has a sharp and artistic eye, and believes that he does well when his work makes his customers happy. All this at very fair and reasonable prices. I had three oriental rugs which had become aged over time. Baseer provided fringe replacement and new bindings with a deep clean and a redyeing of worn sections that returned them to excellent condition. Abdul was very knowledgeable about the types of rug and what was needed to bring them back to life. Having researched many vendors I found Baseer service to be both professional and outstanding. The value of the service was commensurate with the pricing and well worth the investment in the refurbishing of the rugs. I also purchased two area rugs from Baseer which were heirloom quality with certificates of authenticity for insurance and resale purposes. I have taken our rugs to Baseer for cleaning and in some cases restoration. One antique Hamadan, which we have had for several decades, required complicated reweaving for a section that had been damaged. They did a fantastic job on that restoration, and if anyone were to examine that rug today they would be hard-pressed to determine which section of the rug had been rewoven. read more

I have had a rug cleaned here and also purchased a rug here. Both experiences were excellent. The owner appraised my rug for free before cleaning it and explained a bit about its history, based on technique and pattern (which tracked with the provenance as I had known it). The rug looks much better after a deep clean at a decent price. Pet stains and yellowing gone. I went back the day after I had my rug cleaned to purchase another rug for my bedroom. It was a bit on impulse, but I'd tried out a few modern rugs and nothing felt right, and I'd loved seeing the showroom pieces when I picked up my cleaned rug. The quality of the modern rugs that I had ordered online and tried was seriously lacking, yet they were nearly the same price as the heirloom piece I was able to purchase out of inventory at Baseer! It it so worth it to purchase a wool, hand-knotted "forever" rug that is naturally stain resistant and lacks chemicals, instead of a trendy, machine made piece that emits VOCs and is sold at an absurd markup. I can't believe I'd forgotten that, but it can be intimidating to think about purchasing an heirloom rug I guess. Since I travel the Globe, to worn strife areas, looking for surplus equipment, I have accumulated my share of worldly artifacts belonging, of course, to another World. Some of those include Persian rugs, found where else, but Persia. And recently when I needed one of those acquisitions trimmed and cleaned, where else to go, but Baseer's in Larchmont. First of all, people come to me because of my deep knowledge of surplus equipment and the market value for key components needed to launch insurrections. And people go to Baseer's because of their knowledge of the finely woven market. But here's another even better reason to go. It's a family business. And the best businesses are a family business. Your first time being there you may see Baseer's wife. May even see their kids studying and talking. And then what you should also know that you won't learn in an ad or elsewhere is that Baseer goes the extra mile. When I called late on a Saturday after he had left the store and closed it, when I was in need of the carpet for that evening, Baseer heard it in my voice and went back, got my trimmed and cleaned carpet and brought it to my home. Wow. Now that's Customer Service at its's best. Not some 1-800 treatment. It's like, when I asked my friend, if the Chinese takeout restaurant down the block from his store was any good? Baseer shortened a handwoven oriental rug and re-binded by hand the intricate original border to the shortened rug. It's was a complicated job and the results were excellent.
