Basic...and Very Good We had an early dinner before a show and the place wasn't overly crowded or loud. The restaurant is bright and inviting. Our server, Jackson, was very knowledgeable about the menu and was quite helpful and pleasant. We started with some house cocktails and all were inventive, interesting and tasty. We shared a delicious Caesar salad. For mains we had the special swordfish which was quite good. My only quibble was with the "Crispy Chicken". It was so crispy to the point of being inedible. I was able to cut off most of the coating and the encased chicken was good. I would recommend Basic Kitchen and I would be happy to explore more of their menu. read more

Service was outstanding. We were promptly seated after walking in with no reservation. Our wait person stated it was her first day on the job. We would have never known. She was very attentive, knew the menu well, and confidently made recommendations. We were excited about the vegetarian heavy menu. To start we ordered the Corn Ribs and Cauli Wings. The Corn Ribs were super creative and excellent. The Cauli Wings only had a very light drizzle of Buffalo sauce leaving them bland and dependent on the cashew ranch sauce on the side. We requested more Buffalo sauce and then enjoyed the dish. The soup special, peanut/legume, was a disappointment as it was bland and not hot enough. The Basic Bowl was a big hit. We loved it! Overall, we were pleased until we received the check. We were charged 50 cents for the extra Buffalo sauce and a 3% credit card fee! Really? In hindsight we regret not returning the poorly executed $11 cup of soup we took only two slurps from to re-coup being nickel and dimed. read more

I have loved this place in the past but after my experience today I will not be coming back. I have known that this place is pricey and every time I come I wonder why I paid so much for such a minuscule portion, but still have gone back because it is typically fairly good. It is difficult in Charleston to find a place that is both healthy yet affordable and this is not that. Today we ordered an appetizer special, it was an avocado dip with tortilla chips for $6. The amount of avocado was not by any means shareable, probably less than half an avocado. It also was said to come with grape fruit pieces, it was essentially one small piece of a grapefruit cut into teeny tiny pieces. It would have been nice to know that the portion we were getting was adequate for one individual to enjoy it. Not to mention it was extremely under seasoned and I would have been better off making this at home. After we were not extremely happy with our overpriced tiny starter the food took almost 40 minutes to come. I totally get that there were many things that could have been a result of this wait time, but it would have been nice if our server gave us an update or even checked on us during this ridiculous wait time for lunch on a Monday. When the food finally came it was nothing special by any means, the entree salads were super bland. We paid 4 dollars for extra chicken and was just not at all worth it. So as a result will not be coming back any time soon, just not worth the time or money for subpar food with extremely small portions. read more

This was our first experience at Basic Kitchen. We chose this restaurant because it was fairly close to Grace Cathedral where we were attending a concert. The space is nicely laid out with banquettes, tables for four and seating at the bar. We arrived at opening time and while we were there the place filled up quickly. The staff was very personable, accommodating, and helpful. There is an ample drinks and wine list. The food menu is mainly vegetarian with a market fish of the day and a burger. There is salmon and chicken that can be added to the basic bowl offerings. I chose Kale pesto pasta for my main course and my husband opted for a cauliflower schnitzel. The pasta was fusilli which had a nice coating of pesto with grated parmesan on top. The cauliflower dish was breaded and flavored with harissa spice. Both dishes were excellent! We also started with corn ribs----corn cobs that were quartered, grilled and had some chili spice on them. There was enough for two people and those were delicious! For dessert we shared a chocolate matcha cake-- a layer of matcha infused cake, a creamy mousse, and a topping of chocolate ganache. It was perfect for ending the meal. We also had two double espressos which were expertly prepared! All in all, it was a great dining experience! read more

Stumbled upon this place via someone's Instagram post. Its so cute and fresh, food is full of unique flavors. We came for the brunch and ended up sitting at the bar since we didn't have reservations. The bar itself was very cute, very open with high ceilings and fun little lamps built into the bar. The bartenders were super friendly and knowledgeable about the menu / drinks. We ordered the chips with vegan cheese to start - the chips were homemade corn tortilla and so crisp and addictive. For the main we ordered the fish tacos - which were made with a delicious fish not cheap tilapia. The fish was fresh and cooked to perfection, piled with salsa and more of the homemade tortilla. We also ordered the peanut dish which was healthy and filled with delicious flavors. The drinks were super fun too, and bonus they had OAT MILK. Which is very expensive but didn't cost extra. The charcoal chamomile honey lavender hot drink not only looked beautiful, but tasted amazing as well. And they offer to-go cups if you can't finish your tasty drink. They were able to seat us right before closing; we walked in 15 minutes to 3pm and were happy to have us. The service is great. The waitress wasn't in a rush nor did we feel rushed, plus she was aware of foods that we should or shouldn't eat since my wife was pregnant. Very knowledgeable and resourceful. The best thing on the menu are the corn ribs, a unique take and very tasty. The portions are plentiful so its easy to share. I normally hate sweet potatoes but the ones here were the best I've ever had. I'd stay away from the fried cauliflower "wings" as they are tasteless. You're better off saving your money on a drink or increasing the staff's tip. The burger was so-so, but judging from their menu, this doesn't seem like a place that does meat and chicken well. We are visiting from out of town but one of my favorite things about Charleston is finding vegan/ organic options. This was our first visit here, we did not have a reservation and was seated at the bar by a sweet, friendly hostess. Unfortunately, that was the end of Southern hospitality I have experienced in most places here. I felt like a burden asking anything from the two ladies behind the bar and even when I allowed them to approach us first to ask for a side of sauce for example, I almost immediately regretted it. The lady could have rolled her eyes and it wouldnt have been surprising. We felt so unwelcome. The stars are for the food: ordered the naughty burger which came with a side of sweet potato fries....
