What a horrible experience. Girlfriend and I went there yesterday for a quick drink or two after attending the Greek Festival nearby. There were 4 open spots at the bar, so when we *finally* found the host, we asked if they were first come, first served. He told us there were two people coming and that he'd let us know. After waiting probably 10 min, he finally agreed to seat us at the bar (the 2 other people never showed up). So, there we sat...and sat. Bartender finally comes by and plops a bottle of water in front of us. Doesn't say hi / bye / or eff you (although she definitely gave off the latter vibe with her body language). After sitting there another 10 min and not being acknowledged whatsoever, I got fed up. Stood up, told my girlfriend I had had enough...and I flat out refused to give my money to an establishment that treats their customers in this manner. Honestly, I grew up in the Lowcountry and I can tell you that *most* restaurants/bars/shops/etc. in Charleston feature employees who are generally gracious/friendly/hospitable/helpful. Then, on occasion, you run into places like this. How they stay in business has to be a function of location alone, because their service is absolutely horrible! We ordered the two Chicken Cutlet Sammies, one Parmesan and one Buffalo. We also substituted one side of the included chips with the fries. The Parmesan sammie was good but I was surprised when the Buffalo came out cold. Thought maybe it was supposed to be. I mentioned it to the server and they confirmed it was supposed to be a hot sandwich. They offered to get me a new one but since I didn't want to make everyone else wait, they comp'd the sandwich. Everything we had at Berkeleys was phenomenal! The fried artichokes and the sauces it came with were delicious, salad and sandwiches were both incredible. We came on a Saturday early dinner time and there was no wait for a table. There is a large outdoor seating area, and the bar had a large pass through window to that area, so I think they had the AC off for that which made the restaurant toasty, but there were fans and it was fine. We showed up half an hour before closing and were welcomed in. Staff was very friendly and attentive. Food was good and came out at a timely manner. Smoked salmon dip was good... The chips were a bit more salty than I'd like, but the dip neutralized that well. The chicken parm and eggplant parm sandwiches were really good. Good portions, yet it didn't feel heavy (my thighs are thankful lol). We pretty much got full after eating half and was able to take the rest home to enjoy it over another meal. We ended up waiting about 20 minutes longer than the estimated 25-minute wait time. Our first time in Charleston, SC. We were looking for a place for lunch. We passed Berkeley's, saw the crowd and figured this must be a great place to be so busy on a weekday afternoon. We were not wrong. It was reservation only for the outside tables. Bar seats and indoor booths (3) were available so we sat at the bar. Another great choice. The bartender was excellent. Very friendly and personable. Food was delicious and was served quickly but we were not rushed. The bar serves beer, wine, and cider plus signature wine slushies. We had the special Thai fried chicken sandwich, a fried eggplant sandwich, and a beet salad. Also a side Caesar salad that had the best most authentic dressing we've ever had. What a great place! We came because I had read that this was the best chicken Caesar salad, and boy were they right! Just absolutely loved the chicken and the breading, just perfect! Everything was great, but I do think the smoked fish dip with house made chips was the star dish. Packed with flavor and crisp texture. Hailey was our server and she was wonderful. Patient and extremely helpful. The restaurant is has a laid back deli feel with comfortable seats and a great bar and outdoor space. We came for lunch and it was just wonderful. I was excited to try this place for a while, loved sitting on the cupboard patio people watching friendly staff, and I very much enjoyed. My Greek salad recommended to me by my server. I was a little surprised how small the frozen sangria was, but it was delicious. I love that the Greek salad had chickpeas, and while the dressing did not look like an authentic oil based Greek dressing I expected, it was not overly mayonnaisy or yogurty. I went to Berkeley's recently and was reminded that I need to make this a regular stop. It is downtown but parking is pretty easy and you can usually get a spot without a long wait. We lucked out with Two seats at the bar. We were in the mood for chicken Parm so we decided to get chicken Parm two ways... one with the pasta and one as a sandwich with fries. Honestly I just wanted the fries so I could get a side of their cheese sauce to dip in. Plus, we got a Caesar salad to share because I can't resist those homemade croutons. They are so delicious. Inside seating is best but very limited. I did notice they have heaters on the patio for cool nights though. Such a cute and casual spot! The sandwiches were super flavorful - we got the chef's special cheesesteak, and I'd highly recommend it. The Caesar salad with chicken was delicious too, though the croutons basically melted from all the grease they're cooked in. We heard so many good things about Berkeley's from friends and neighbors, so this may just have been an off day but we were incredibly disappointed with the food and service today. We ordered fries, a French dip, Caesar salad, and chicken parmigiana. Every single item tasted as if it had been left out and reheated (not even completely reheated, nothing was warm). Our server was very kind and welcoming however when we first walked in we were greeted by a very unwelcoming man. We wouldn't be against trying it again, but we will definitely not be itching to go back. We did not finish our meals, and opted to not take them to-go because they were just not good. I was excited to try Berkeley's for so many reasons! 1) They own The Archer, which I absolutely love, 2) they accept Blackbird, and 3) their chicken parm sandwich was listed as a top dish. The food and service did not disappoint! The sandwich was huge!My boyfriend and I were able to split it for lunch and it came with homemade chips. Thinly sliced chicken breast and a sweet marina sauce! Our friendly server recommended trying the Philly cheesesteak next time (though I was definitely eyeing the artichoke sandwich too!). (5 stars obviously) 10/10 experience! Great food, and excellent service from our server Britany! My boyfriend and I came in to Berkeleys Thursday night for the first time. They were on a wait for tables but the guy manager/host was accommodating and got us seated quickly despite the wait and not having a reservation. Our server Britany was excellent. We didn't know what to order with such a variety of options and she guided us through the menu. She suggested the artichoke dip for our appetizer and we ended up going with the cheesesteak and the chicken parmesan sandwich and they were to die for! She suggested the honey mustard for the fries which was shockingly delicious. The restaurant was very busy for a Thursday and we noticed she had a few other tables and a large group of girls but despite that still checked in on us, made conversation and always made sure we had a drink and everything we needed. We thought we were full from the large portions of food (something you don't see everywhere in Charleston) but she offered us their homemade ice cream which is made by one of the managers or owners and we couldn't say no! No frills! The cutlet is actually very flavorful and crispy on its own, and I love that they used sub bread for the sandwich. We also ordered the smoked salmon dip but I was so hungry I didn't get a photo! All of the dip was buried under a layer of chips (which we did not know) with a bit of dip scooped on top. When we first got it, we thought they had skimped us on the dip and were upset but once we kept eating we realized there was a huge layer of dip under the chips! So if you get that, now you know! I dined at Berkeley's during their collaboration with Duke's Mayo for Hot Tomato Summer so they had a speciality menu. I started my experience by getting a Bellini and some ice cold water. Their water is served in a wine bottle which adds to the ambience. For my meal I enjoyed a chicken BLT with a side of fries. The fries were perfectly crispy and the sandwich was so savory. My husband has been looking for a good Philly Cheesesteak. Saw this place was recommended. He loved it. I had the French Dip. The meat for both was shaved rib eye and had great flavor.
