My wife and I, and our 16 year old son planned a last minute trip to Charleston because the snow and skiing out west is just bad this spring. In looking for a restaurant for dinner on Sunday night I happened across Sorghum & Salt. The menu looked great so we made a reservation to eat a the Chef's Counter. This turned out to be a great decision all the way around. We were seated right in the middle of the Chef's Counter. The gentleman who waited on us was great. He explained the menu well and provided good direction on wine. All of the other employees we interacted with were friendly and helpful too. On the to important part, the food. The three of us shared plates throughout the meal. i want to hit the highlights. We started with the Seared Blue Fin Tuna, the Radishes, and the Cauliflower. We picked the tuna dish after watching one being made almost in front of us for another table. It was as good as it looked. It was different than any tuna dish I have had thanks to the cashew tahini the dish sat on. The flavors together were great. The Cauliflower was cooked, then maybe fried, and tasted great with the green curry and peanut sauce. We enjoyed this dish. Out of the three I think that, surprisingly, the Radishes were my favorite. The dish includes almond, charcoal, and green olive. There also was fresh dill that was great. The flavors were fantastic and took away some of the usual sharpness you have with radishes. If you go, try this dish. The mains we shared were the Market Fish and the Carrot Bolognese. The Market Fish was great. The sunchoke veloute, mushrooms, and salsa verde added great flavor. But I want to spend more time on the Carrot Bolognese, which was my other favorite dish. It included rigatoni, labneh, and ricotta salata. I am not a good enough cook to deduce how exactly the carrots were cooked and prepared, but it was a carrot based sauce over the rigatoni and it was simply fantastic. Even my carnivore wife and son thought it was amazing. If you find yourself in Charleston and want to treat yourself right, you need to make your way to Sorghum & Salt. read more

Lovely dinner! My sister and I split seven dishes, 4 small, 2 mids, and 1 large. Highly recommend the citrus salad - the sauce is to die for. The beets and charred cabbage are a most. We also got the focaccia with whipped ricotta which was delicious but not something I think is a must to order. The seared tuna is 10/10!!! The only thing I'd say to skip is the gnocchi, it was not a great texture and the dish overall was lacking flavor! Recommend Sorghum & Salt! The service was very attentive and informative. My wife and I had dinner there tonight. The service was exceptional. Our weight staff were attentive and took good care of us. The restaurant itself was architecturally quite nice. My wife and I settled on a three star rating for the following reasons: 1. Some of the food was very good (more comments). 2. Some of the food was not so good. 3. It was quite expensive for what it was. So first, I'll discuss the cost. We understand and appreciate that restaurants need to be able to provide for their employees and we want them to be paid well and have appropriate benefits. If that drives up the cost to the customer, we understand and accept, and we knew the prices before we went. But $32 for a bowl of rigatoni with carrot sauce seems a bit much. But again we knew the cost when we ordered it. We had a couple of exceptional dishes that we would recommend if they're serving them again. We started with the Gouda tart, which had tomatoes. The crust was excellent as were the tomatoes. The whole dish was a winner. We then had a cauliflower dish. I thought it was going to be with curry, but it came out with a peanut sauce. It was very good also. My wife and I differ on the pork dish. She thought it was too salty. I thought it was fine. I thought it was a good dish. She did not like it. And then the rigatoni dish was just a complete mess if you ask. It was not very rich or saucy. Frankly, it was pretty bare as we are considering it. It didn't even have any cheese on the top as you would expect a pasta dish to. We ordered the cheesecake for dessert. The cheesecake itself is OK but it was served with blueberries and I swear they were frozen blueberries or something. They certainly were not fresh blueberries. And the menu said that would have a white chocolate caramel sauce, but I'm not sure ours did. In any case the blueberries really distracted from the dish. As we write this review, we wonder if they're making substitutions for what is on the menu even though the menu was updated daily. All in all, it was an interesting experience. I think there are lots of places in Charleston that might be better. read more

We called Sorghum & Salt after the restaurant we originally wanted to visit had to close for a special event. The hostess was nice, let us know that they have availability, and had us down for a reservation. We walked in and enjoyed their interior, which is modernist, classy, and spacious. We sat at the chef's counter but elected to order à la carte. We got the beets, pork shoulder, and the fennel confit. The beets and fennel confit were both enjoyable. I was taken aback by the pork shoulder, since it was served cold. That should be noted on the menu, especially since cold pork is not something most people would expect and is worth noting. We also got the orange vodka and the pear tequila, and both were tasty without being overwhelming, which made them easy to enjoy throughout the evening. Also, the restroom is like a disco, which was fun. Finally, we had a nice conversation with the chef, and our waitress was super sweet.​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​ Great service all around! read more

I loved the open kitchen and the vibe of the place, the menu was explained to us as smaller bites and our server recommended just the right amount of food for us. Fresh local ingredients and unique combinations. I'm writing this review a couple of weeks after we went so I don't remember exactly the dishes that we ordered, but I do remember that every one of them was delicious. They were flexible with making substitutions for a vegetarian. Two reasons for only four stars, and it has nothing to do with the food; the server insisted that we order all of our dishes upfront, we could not order some and then decide if we were still hungry like we usually do in a tapas place. Secondly, they refused to split the bill. We had a business meal and as it is so common, you're not allowed to have alcohol on the check for a personal business meal, but they wouldn't put 2 dishes on one bill and the rest on a second bill- they said down the line is the only way they could split it. I thought that was ridiculous and cost us $ because we were unable to write off the meal. There were some seats available at the bar where you were literally in front of the chef's area and could watch them in action. That would be a fun thing to do! read more

So this was hit and miss for me. Before I get into the food though, staff is top notch 10/10 everyone knows their stuff and is very friendly/helpful. The chef sent out the radish appetizer as a gift. I have never enjoyed a radish in my life, but I devoured these. Maybe it was the charcoal sauce or sprigs of dill? I don't know, but it was interesting and I really liked it. Next I had the scallop in miso paste and a hazelnut butter - outstanding. Then I had the roasted cauliflower in peanut sauce. This, I thought I would love because I love peanut sauce, but it was salty and not great to me. I was so excited for my main dish, the gnocchi--one of my favorite foods-- but it was a little rubbery for me. I loved the celery root mash that it came on, but again the oils/dressing the dish tasted salty to me. Not my favorite. The mushrooms in the dish though - chanterelle, I think - whoa, some of the best I've ever tasted. I would try it again because I felt like the prices were reasonable and I love how vegetable-forward the menu is, especially in a city like Charleston that is heavy on the fried. Also, I mentioned in the reservation that I was celebrating my birthday and my menu said Happy Birthday on it, which I thought was a nice touch. read more

What a fantastic surprise!!!! We searched for a vegan restaurant in Charleston for dinner tonight. We spent the day here with coastal expeditions touring morris island looking for fossils. What a great way to end our day here with a fabulous creative vegan menu!! Our server was delightful. We sat at the counter and talked with the chefs as the items were prepared. Lots of bar stools making it quite pleasant for single patrons. We ordered 7 different menu items to taste as many options as possible. My favorites were the radishes, gem salad, cauliflower, carrots, gnocchi, beets, then persimmon. We will definitely come back here soon. Richard just reminded me that the vegan menu did not offer a high protein option. That would be a good addition. We were celebrating an early birthday and so they gave me a glass of bubbly!!! Amazing dining experience with fun and flavorful food. The service was excellent and the new location is beautiful. We joined some friends for dinner on a Sunday evening at 6pm. We were there first guests but the dining room began to fill up as the night continued. The server was knowledgeable about the menu, very attentive, and anticipated our needs. Food arrived at the table as it was prepared and became ready. We never had a stack of dishes or an empty table waiting for the next dish. It felt as though the meal was timed perfectly. With two vegans and two with no restrictions it was easy for everyone to find things on the menu they wanted to try. This might sound a little strange, but you have to check out the restroom. This was one of our food highlights in Charleston. We did our research to make a reservation for this place and left it thoroughly fulfilled and impressed. We got a liking for farm to table dining since our last trip to Austin, so wanted to experience it here in Charleston. The server here was super knowledgeable and definitely had so much knowledge about the local produce being used in our meals. Hats off to an adjacent server who also gave us a lot of tips even though he wasn't serving us. As my girl enjoyed her seafood, I ended up going with 2 items: 1) Butterbean Panzanella: Just very clean and easy to eat. 2) House made pasta: I mainly got this because I wanted to see how the chefs use the halloumi in the pasta. Damn this was so so good. I was very impressed. Also, kudos to the bathroom, which feels like you're at one of those elite nightclubs of sorts. They had one of the coolest dispensers for mouthwash I've ever seen. And - of course - I don't always see mouthwash offered to patrons at restaurants. Sorghum & Salt is what I always hope the restaurant experience will be. The food is fresh, creative, and of course, delicious. The dining experience is well paced, the servers are knowledgable (ours even caught an error in preparation before it was served), and the plate size is appropriate (you leave feeling properly sated if you take the server's advice). I first came here in 2021 when outdoor dining and social distancing was at the top of everyone's minds. I remember finding the interior charming and being blown away by the food. The ingredients are local and down-to-earth, but in preparation they're elevated and beautifully plated. Sorghum & Salt isn't so fancy that you feel you need to dress up, nor is the tasting menu full of things you (maybe) haven't heard of. Yet it goes toe-to-toe with some of the more expensive and fancier dining experiences I've had in my life. In no universe could I prepare for myself what Sorghum & Salt is able to make. Every dish brought something different and yet the dining experience as a whole still felt cohesive. I absolutely love that their vegetarian and vegan dishes don't feel like an afterthought - those flavors are just as well thought out and presented. When I look back at the end of the meal, it's hard to pick just one thing that stood out. I think the mark of anything truly great is that it's memorable, and that the memory holds up. I'm really happy that coming back almost 4 years later, Sorghum & Salt impressed me just as much. If you're in Charleston, this should be on the top of your list. read more

It is rare to discover a restaurant that nails everything. This is such a place. Ambiance: cool vibe, nice music, comfy seating, good location. Service: friendly, not smothering or insincere. Great advice on ordering. Prompt and quiet attention between courses. Very friendly without being smarmy. Food: this is where it all comes together. The menu is fairly short, very seasonal, and deeply thoughtful. Dishes which are interesting, creative, but not "challenging". Even if you ignore the descriptions, these plates of food are straight-up yummy. It's all in the sauces here - so tasty you want to lick the plates. Standouts: radishes, shrimp, sunchokes, all the desserts. Cocktails: amazing and generous. Desserts: top notch. I could find no flaws in this meal. Tapas style restaurant with a good variety of things, although seems to be more seafood based. Asked the server to help us try to get out in under an hour and they accommodated us very well. Really liked the pasta dish and the cheesecake at the end was excellent. My biggest disappointment was the scallops - which was served in a beautiful way but they had a glob of salt (maybe should've figured with the name) on it and it completely overpowered the flavor. To be honest, I had super high expectations so maybe that's why I was left a bit disappointed. The menu was unique and appetizing with lots of veggie options which I appreciated. However, some of the dishes we tried were just okay. We tried the Beet Bruschetta, Watermelon, Gnocchi, and Mushroom Orecchiette. The bruschetta was actually delicious, the bread was lightly crusty, with a creamy cheese and juicy beets on top. The (yellow) watermelon was served with whipped feta in a vadouvan-style brothy curry sauce, and was pretty good - I really liked the sauce but the watermelon was kind of just placed on top. The gnocchi was good! Served on a bed of potato puree, drizzled with pesto-style sauce - pretty good but wish they had given us a larger portion. Finally, the orecchiette was a huge flop - had a super weird taste that put us off. Overall, food was inventive but a little bit of a letdown especially for the super expensive price. read more

S&S appealed to me because of their many vegan and vegetarian options. I made a reservation for our stay in Charleston and chose the "tasting counter" because who doesn't love a good tasting counter? I highly recommend this if it is available because it's a really cool experience to watch the dishes be prepared in front of you. Even if you can't or don't want to sit at the counter, the open concept kitchen is available to view from most of the dining room. They have both a tasting menu (with wine pairing!) as well as an a la carte menu. We're sluts for a tasting menu but there were such enticing and mouthwatering shit on the a la carte menu that we decided to order a bunch of shit off of there to share. We weren't quite sure about the portion sizes so we threw a dart into the dark and ordered four things to share which I felt was perfect for me. I could have squeezed in something else but I figured I could survive eating an appropriate but not excessive amount for one meal of my life. Ok so we started with their homemade ricotta which was creamy and delicious with a sprinkling of delicious green shit and served with delicious toasted but soft and thick bread. This dish literally could not have been better. For the second course, we moved things along with the heirloom cucumbers laying on a green goddess-esque dressing and topped with fresh dill. This was INCREDIBLE with a flavor combo that was pure crack. This was easily one of the best dishes I have ever had. If it was more socially acceptable, I would have legit licked that scrumptious sauce off of the plate. Next, we received the little gem lettuce dish with bread crumbs and pomegranate seeds. It was fun to cut the lettuce wedge but this was my least favorite dish. There was something very overwhelming about this flavor, almost like a vinegar tartness. Finally, we were served the celery root, topped with caper slaw. The celery root was cooked perfectly, breaded, and lightly fried. Definitely better than what I have prepared or myself at home. This was a very close competitor for my favorite dish of the night with the cucumber. GF ordered the scallops with mushrooms to top everything off. She says, "it was good". Spent a night in Charleston last year and went to this restaurant for dinner with my daughter. Decor was very charming and a bit rustic. Service was outstanding. The food though was on another level. I am a vegan and a pretty good cook so I don't go out much because I am mostly disappointed. There was nothing disappointing about our meal here. We each ordered an appetizer, main dish and dessert. Each course was an absolute treat for the senses. The presentation was beautiful. The smells were amazing. The taste of each dish was extraordinary! The chef here is quite impressive. I have recommended it to friends and family traveling through Charleston. They have meat, fish, vegan and vegetarian dishes to appeal to everyone. I will go back soon on my way back through Charleston this summer. Probably one of the top 3 restaurants that I have eaten at in my 69 years! read more

I had high expectations after hearing about this restaurant. We were there once before and ordered off the menu. The chef tasting menu was disappointing at this time for the exorbitant price. Way overpriced. I would have preferred beets over pickled tomatoes with the ricotta, and was not thrilled to have to ask for bread that took 10 minutes to receive and should have accompanied the ricotta. There was nothing outstanding that we had. The dessert missed the mark as well. Give me chocolate please. I cannot recommend this spot. read more
