I'm not normally a guy to talk (write) badly about someone but this a special exc. I called to set up an air conditioning service visit on Tuesday morning to be performed on Friday at 9am. 9:45am Friday: no show or call from them. I call them. "Our guy is stuck in traffic. Is 11am okay?", he asks. I accept even though I'm perturbed regarding traffic supposedly so bad it requires two hours to get to east midtown. 11am: the store calls and says the guy doesn't know to make it to my address. They need directions. In the age of modern smartphones, gps and google maps, they cannot make it to my address. "Where is your guy right now? I will meet him a personally bring him to the address. He's at 43rd & 2nd? Okay, I'm coming to him. Tell him not to move." As soon as the store guy heard that, he informs me the service guy has turned around to go back. I wasted my time. They didn't want my business. They certainly aren't going to get it now. I'm just calling it like it is. read more

THIEVES and LIARS!! DO NOT DO BUSINESS HERE! On August 5th I purchased a replacement part for my Miele vacuum for $125. It was to be delivered to me in three business days. Two weeks later it arrived after I called several times chasing it - and the part was defective. It took several calls for me to get Basics Plus to pick up the defective part. They were meant to deliver me a replacement. I called many, many, many times over the subsequent weeks to get a status of the new part. Always some sort of run-around. Jessica changed her story every time I called: "it was delivered, oh no, it's here and we will deliver it.... oh, wait you didn't get it yet?" Um, no. Then I spoke to Jesse who told me he delivered it but it was refused by our doorman "because you were on vacation." Our doorman never refuse packages - that is their job - not do they disclose whether we are getting milk, at work, or on vacation. I told Jesse that what he is saying isn't possible, and he said, "Oh, so you're saying I'm a liar?" and he hung up on me. Jessica said she would personally take it to my apartment and she did not. Jesse then told the manager Zeev Machlouf that he had in fact delivered it, on Sep 17 at 4:50pm. I sat with our security team and reviewed video - guess what - no delivery - surprise surprise. The manager Zeev Machlouf refuses to provide a refund. He says he needs to determine where the vacuum part is before he will refund. He believes his staff over me, and doesn't seem phased by the fact that he has an employee (Jesse) who has lied to him and me, and has hung up on me. This is the worst customer experience I've ever had in NYC. Do NOT do business here. read more

Way overpriced! This store has a lot of nice merchandise and a good selection of hardware on the lower floor, but be prepared to pay way over standard retail price. In fact, they charged me $90 for a showerhead which has a list price of $72. When I checked it out online, I found that I had paid way over list price and found that Gracious Home sells the identical showerhead for $50 and Ace Hardware sells it for $42. If you like to waste money at a store which charges way over retail, this is the place to shop. If not, try somewhere else. read more

In this age of Internet shopping, I believe that good customer service is the only way to thrive. After dealing with frowny teenagers at Fairway and steely-eyed bodega owners, it's nice to walk into a store where the staff is friendly and will answer questions for you. They're definitely not huge, but before you trudge down to Home Depot for some random widget, give them a call and ask them if they have what you need. (They're great over the phone, too.) read more

Very convenient local housewares store with many options, reasonable prices and friendly helpful staff.

There's a prominent sign in one section about how they will beat prices at other brick and mortar stores such as CVS plus online ones such as Amazon. So I scan the item I want (which is directly below the sign) into Amazon app search and guess what? It's 50% cheaper there! So I bring it up to the register to ask them about it and they said they can't help me and to come back during a weekday before 5pm when the manager is there. Guess what? I also work and can't get there weekdays before 5pm. Is false advertising illegal in NYC or throughout the country? According to the FTC, it is. According the the FTC, "When consumers see or hear an advertisement, whether it's on the Internet, radio or television, or anywhere else, federal law says that ad must be truthful, not misleading, and, when appropriate, backed by scientific evidence. Niche cubbyhole. This hardware store reminds me of The Sharper Image store. Overpriced, nice to have stuff that is nice when someone notices it. It is the most laid back store on the UWS. There are many hardware stores in the area. But how many hardware stores can you walk into and say, " I sure can use a vanilla reed diffuser." "And yea, I would like to make some club soda, the next time I need some keys cut, so let me purchase a Carbonated Water Machine. " Hmm, not too many. So these people sell me a Cuisinart pasta pot off the display shelf. They charge me $156.76 and claim I'm getting a 10% discount because the pot isn't new-in-package. I lug the thing home and find a sticker on the bottom: $79. First I think, well, maybe it's been sitting there for 25 years. But then I go online. And sure enough, the identical pot costs $79 at Bed Bath & Beyond (with free shipping). The New York word for Basics Plus? Gonifs. read more

The age old questions. What is basic? What is essential? Here in the UWS, we have two stores to help us come to grips with these aspects of human experience: Basics Plus and Essentials Plus. Basics Plus is better if you want a specific thing and if you want it to be nice and if you don't mind paying extra for it. Essentials Plus is not nice at all, but sure does have a lot of stuff. Basics Plus has an entire hardware store downstairs, and an extensive collection of fancy housewares upstairs. It's overpriced, true, but the people who work there are nice. They will answer your questions without guff, and with answers (accurate ones, even). Isn't that worth something? Oh yeah, and they're open pretty late. read more

I bought two air conditioners from Basics Plus. Pricing was okay, but scheduling an appointment and a follow up appointment for finishing the installation was near impossible. I was told four times that I would be called back with a time. I never was. I gave someone there my email address. No one ever contacted me. I called again and was given a time, but no one showed up. I called the store, and they did not assume any blame for the no show. Instead they said I should always talk with Ricardo to schedule an appointment and no one else. Hopefully the air conditioning job will be done someday. I am still waiting. Perhaps by Christmas things will be good to go. read more

I had their guys install an air-conditioner for me. They showed up on time and did a good job. One star off because of how difficult it was to get in touch with them to arrange this in the first place. First time I called they put me on hold for so long that I think they forgot about me. Called back again, busy. Called back again, no answer. Finally, fourth call got through. read more

Had a bad experience with the store closing early, and then a strange experience contacting the management. I called the store at 2315 Broadway, asked about an item and the closing time, and was told the store was open until 10PM. The subway was disrupted and I ended up paying a $20 for a cab to get to the store by 10pm. The lights were already out, the cash registers were shut down, and I was told that "we have other places to be". It's obvious that the shut down process started quite a bit before 10pm. Is the store open until 10pm or not? What is the store policy on staff shutting down early? I called the contact number listed on the website, but was told that "the voice mailbox is not set up yet". I filled out the form on the "contact us" page, and got the message "Unable to submit your request. Please, try again later". Interesting approach to customer service! read more

They have it all, and who knew?? What a great little find and the store manager goes out of his way to say hello and to make sure I find what I am looking for. The staff is super friendly and makes best efforts to get what I need. Avoid this store. Perfect argument to stay with bed bath beyond or reputable store. Let me tell you what happened..I bought what I thought were 2 blue drinking glasses. Well about a few weeks later, they started peeling blue paint chips. I tried to return them and it was over 30 days...the manager "Rafael Vilar" said (by phone to cashier) I could only have store credit. I swallowed poison paint chips and he needed to keep my $15.00.....what a dumb business decision. I will no longer support his store. I gave the credit slip away. If anyone gets sick from ingesting paint, they will hear from me. read more

I brought my Miele vacuum to be repaired. The staff of the store was very helpful and even came to curbside to pick up my vacuum from my car. Ambi did a great job repairing my vacuum. He figured out the Problem right away and now my vacuum works perfectly. He was very thorough, professional, and went above and beyond in every way. Some of the employees are extremely unfriendly and very very unaccommodating. Very poor service, even by New York standards. Nearby Laytners, HomeGoods and other hardware/houseware stores have better selections and prices AND refund policies. Don't let the storefront draw you in to this money trap that will promise an easy return policy but later will back out from their promise. read more

Terrible customer service. After spending hundreds on Paint this week, the owner refused to shake a can of paint that I had purchased a month before even though it clearly had the Paint n' Paper sticker on it. Prices are ridiculous. No wonder local merchants are going out of business. Especially ones with an attitude like this. I had an awful experience here. I needed a copy of key made and they told me over the phone no problem, come in and we'll take care of you. Well, they sure did. When I got there they told me my key was "old" and that it would cost $35! That's how much a new lock costs at some places. Because I have no idea what keys should cost, I thought about it for a minute and then decided to leave the store. I checked another store about 10 minutes later and they quoted me $10. So 'Basics Plus' tried to rip me off for $25 on 1 item!! Unbelievable. And when I called to ask them why they charged so much while their competitor did it for much much less, they had an attitude: "This is our price" they said. Please nobody shop here. They will try to rip you off. And if you're a woman, God help you in this store!!!! read more

Fabulous help, quick service. Really went the extra mile

They won't issue you a return, even if they sell you a faulty product. At best, you'll get a store credit. My husband and I recently moved to New York and wanted to support local businesses instead of big corporations. We had visited Basics Plus for may of our household needs in the first few weeks living here and had been pleasantly pleased with their selection. Today I walked 10 blocks to purchase a broom and curtain rod from them, even though Bed Bath & Beyond would've been cheaper and closer. When I got home and unwrapped the broom/dustpan combination, the dustpan broke off. I was dismayed at such shoddy material and figured the plastic must've been old, or just poorly made. So, I walked all the way back to return the broom. However Basics Plus wouldn't grant me a return, saying that the product was fine when they sold it to me & I must've broken it. They could offer an exchange or store credit, no return. Seriously, they want to loose good customers over $32.67? Fine. We won't be giving Basics Plus any more of our business. read more

Horrible customer service! I contacted the store to have my Miele vacuum cleaner repaired. I paid extra to have it picked up and they forgot to do it. A week later I called again and it was finally picked up. Then, the repair took a long time and there was no explanation for the delay. The vacuum was returned, but not fixed properly. The manager just told me that they've had a lot of turnover and no staff to do the work properly, but suggested I drop off the vacuum cleaner again. NO way! UNACCEPTABLE! read more

I purchased an electronic kettle and when I opened the box upon returning home, the top was cracked in two. I went back to the store (2 hours after I purchased it) looking to make an exchange and they didn't have a replacement, so I asked for a refund. I was told that I could not get a refund (only store credit) because the box was opened. I pointed out to the manager on duty that the kettle was broken when I opened the box and he responded that they didn't know it was broken when they sold it to me and that it's their policy to only give refunds on unopened merchandise. Per the manager on duty at the time, I called back during business hours (when I am also at work) to speak with the general manager, but thus far, he was refused to take my phone call. They've lost an 8 year customer. read more

Expect nothing, question everything! I've been to this place many times since it just down the block from my apartment...every single encounter has been a debacle. The first time, they charged me an extra $30 for items I didn't purchase. The second time, they left out a number of items from my shopping bag so I had to go back. The third time, I went to have keys made and they lost my orginal!!! Seriously, if I hadn't had a spare with my best friend, I would have been locked out of my place.
