Showing off the Woo to visiting family with a hankering for some good ethnic food. Wanted nice, small, but not too shi-shi. With a stroke of luck and an open parking space, we were seemingly whisked into a back table of this lovely just off Shrewsbury St. restaurant on Saturday night. It was perfect. The food was so fresh and everyone enjoyed their meals, but what struck me most was the graciousness of the people working there. So kind, so gentle. The owner greeted us in the way out with such sincerity. Maybe I'm just a sucker for nice people, but this is what makes me go back to a place. I'm not really sure what to expect for Thai food in Central MA, but I guess this was pretty close. It was a little buttery for my taste but the overall flavors were there. Granted we didn't order anything majorly "traditional" (e.g. Pad Thai) but the Penang Curry was decent as was the pineapple fried rice. Overall good service, though the interior design was done in a way where you can hear everything the other tables are saying, which was somewhat annoying. read more

After reading the reviews, had high hopes. But ultimately, they did not deliver. Most of the issues are service related. Ordered from the vegetarian section of the menu "Spicy Tofu Eggplant" But there is no tofu. Waitress said she would get us some tofu, took the dish back. Came back and said that it did not come with Tofu - we pointed out that the menu title for the dish included the word "tofu". Waitress told us that the kitchen said because we ordered from the Vegetarian section of the menu it doesn't include tofu. Huh? Another dish we ordered: Green Curry, specifying tofu as the "meat" ("Meat" is the menu description). We were brought curry and could not find any tofu. Discussion of Tofu part 2 - waitress told us we could not order tofu as a meat, because mean was not vegetarian. She offered to bring us some tofu to put into the curry. Came back and told us that the kitchen said that tofu is too bland and it would need to be cooked in the curry for them to serve it as curry with tofu. Apparently, the kitchen is stubborn because they refused to provide us with tofu to put in the curry even though we acknowledged that plain tofu is bland. There were three of us. Two dishes came out together and the third person's dish came out 15 -20 minutes later. We asked several time and the waitress said that it was coming right out. The restaurant was mostly empty - so this is not an issue of there being a full house (and even if there was a full house, they could have timed the dishes together). Does the kitchen have only one pan to use to with which to cook? The food was alright. Nothing to get excited about and certainly nothing to make one want to return given the kitchen's refusal to make the dishes described on the menu (and then refuse to attempt to fix it). Extra spicy - our request - was not really spicy. Food overall bland (even with out including the 'bland tofu' that the kitchen refused to provide). All I can say is, WOW! I've only had Thai food a couple of times but this knocked my socks off! Basil n'Spice is nicer than your average Thai restaurant, at least in Central Massachusetts, and has very attentive service. We ordered three things: the Fresh Rolls, Larb Gai, and Basil Pad Thai. The fresh rolls were fine, although we make better ones at home and the dipping sauce was a bit too molasses-like. At $6 for what is essentially two large rolls cut into three pieces each, I don't think I would get this again. The Larb Gai probably wasn't completely authentic (it was made with chicken), but it had all the basic flavors that you crave in Thai food (sweet, spicy, sour). My only complaint with this dish is that the sweet and sour overepowered the spice a little bit. The Basil Pad Thai was completely average, and wasn't at all spicy even thought it was advertised as such. Again, the flavor was too sweet. Basil n'Spice isn't a destination Thai restaurant and it has relatively small portions compared to other Thai restaurants in the area (you might actually be able to finish a dish here). Still, its not a bad place and if you happen to be in the area and craving Thai food, its worth a try. read more

Had my reservations at first as I've been spoiled by real Thai food back home BUT I would definitely say this is the most authentic Thai in the Worcester/Shrewsbury area. The pad thai is perfectly flavored and not too wet/dry. The curry puff tastes exactly like what we make/get in Asia. The desserts are pretty good too. Definitely recommended! read more

What a gem this place is! Worcester has been lacking in a good Thai restaurant for years but that is fixed now that Basil n' Spice is here! The vegetables are all fresh, meals are made to order and spiced perfectly. The Massaman is delicious and the soups are perfect. This is a completely unassuming building, as noted behind Funky Murphys, but the inside is perfectly decorated to feel warm and welcoming. The only thing that kept me from giving this a full five stars is that the service was mediocre, at best. I'm hoping that improves as they find their groove. read more

Great food. Basil N' Spice really cares about the quality of their food. Their food looks and tastes amazing. As you can tell in the photos, they present their food beautifully. It is obvious the food is freshly prepared with quality ingredients. They are very generous with their portions. The owners appear to want to make their establishment top notch: very friendly and interested in feedback. Pad Thai shrimp - very generous and well made. Very clean. Pad see ew - very nice flavor Massaman scallops - it did not have potatoes like I am used to, but it is very good, and I will get it again. Generous scallop portions and they are cooked nicely. By far the WORST Thai food I have ever had the unfortunate reason to eat. Went in on the suggestion of my hair stylist on a day of a very long motorcycle ride. Wanted to go in and order "take-out." Placed the order which was nothing very extensive, but after about 45 minutes...STILL NO FOOD. It took the dishwasher coming out of the kitchen to deliver clean glasses to notice us sitting there too long to do something.....KUDOS TO THE DISHWASHER. Then all of the sudden there was a hustle in getting our order...which in the end SUCKED!!!! I spent almost $60 on my order only to not even eat the food because it was so bad.....THAT IS A LOT OF MONEY TO THROW OUT! I am looking at other reviews and am shocked by them...so either I was given bad food because they were busy...NOT AN EXCUSE....or people don't know good Thai food and think that this place is it???? read more

Sorry to give only 2 stars but the fact that their massaman curry was prepared with BARELY cooked, hard potatoes is unacceptable. Extra annoying that we requested/paid for extra potatoes which was a waste of more of our money. Dear Owner - have your chefs take the time and make a simple effort to test things like this before serving. If someone in your kitchen took a half a second to put a fork in one of the potatoes to see if they were even slightly cooked, that would be a wise process. Lazy! Ordered takeout Friday night. Asked for spicy Penang curry. They suggested three stars for spicy. It wasn't spicy and the Penang curry was a little sour and did not have that Penang flavor. As they say 'sauce is the boss' and this sauce was a letdown. I have Penang curry a couple times a week in New York and this just did not measure up. This is what Penang curry should look like and lime should not effect the Penang flavor. read more

Fried fish and duck (the 2 most expensive entrees out of the 6 or 7 things we ordered) were grossly overcooked. Fish was so bad we couldnt even eat it. Came here the other day , it's a hit or miss. The food isn't consistent, I've ordered many drunken noodles at different occasions.. lunch, or for dinner and even went back a year later and it's just gotten worse. Everything we ordered was way to sweet. This time around me, and a friend order the papaya salad WICKED sweet, crab Rangoon's.. too over cooked the shell was hard to bite into. Our entrees were the drunken noodles and pad see you all over cooked noodles that were mushy. We wanted to love it! The Thai ice tea was good though. The decor and the restaurant was clean which is a plus! Our original spot we go to is Thai place in shrewsbury about 5 minutes down the road and their food pretty consistent , we wanted to give basil and spice a try again but after this time I don't think we'll have our lunch date here again. read more

One of my favorite restaurants in Central Mass. Every time I have family/friends visit, I make sure to take them here. All the food I've had so far are so flavorful and in my opinion, made better than other Thai restaurants I've been to. My favorite dish is the Basil Pad Thai (soo good!!), but I've also had the Chiang Mai noodles and drunken noodles, all of which are super yummy. Bonuses: The owner is very welcoming and always come over to say hi and ask how things are going when I dine at the restaurant. The decor in the restaurant is extremely nice. Now we have a go to Thai restaurant in Worcester! All the food was wonderful. We ordered the sampler to start. There were 4 of us and I assume the platter was for 2. So we really sampled. It was just enough to taste a variety of appetizers. We ordered 3 main dishes: Chicken Angel, Pad Thai and Chicken Cashew Nut. All were worth ordering again. The staff was very friendly. We were celebrating a birthday and brought a cake to the restaurant. Without prompting they lit the candles and brought the cake over and sang with us. We ordered take out the app sampler, shrimp pad thai, chicken drunken noodle and red curry with beef. App sampler was good. Only exception being the chicken satay the chicken was not flavorful, very thin and very tenderized, like chicken that has been brined too long. Pad thai was good, shrimp seemed fresh. Drunken noodle was full of fresh veggies and the chicken was plentiful and flavorful. The dish had good spice but the taste was somewhat lacking for me. Red curry with beef was a big disappointment. The curry was watery and tasted as such. Again the ingredients were fresh and plentiful. The beef was alittle dry and tough and cut fairly thick for the dish. This was the only part of the meal my wife and I discarded without eating. This is a new restaurant and the staff were very friendly and attentive hopefully they continue to improve. Hit or miss depending on the dish. My friend and I met here for lunch the other day because both of us love Thai food and heard good things about Basil n' Spice. While it is tucked away from the main road, I didn't have any problem getting there with Waze. The restaurant is clean and has pleasant decor. The food is a mixed bag though. We started with the steamed chicken dumplings as an appetizer, and they were excellent. We both scarfed them down, wishing there were more. Unfortunately, my main dish was not as good. I ordered the Basil Pad Thai and it was incredibly "saucy". I don't like my pad Thai so wet, so this was a major problem. The flavor was just okay, so I abandoned the dish midway. It wasn't worth the calories. Instead, I ordered another round of the steamed chicken dumplings to supplement my half-eaten dish. Again, they were fantastic. My friend ordered a shrimp with red curry dish and it was phenomenal. The only issue is that the portion size was a bit small. We were both surprised when the dish was placed on the table. She ended up ordering some soup to supplement the skimpy portion, which she loved. We will probably go back again, based on the other positive food choices, but I tend to judge a place by its Pad Thai. I don't understand how the other food could be so good, yet they screwed up the most basic and fundamental Thai dish. read more

How is place was rated 4 stars is a mystery. I ordered the traditional Pad Thai, Thai iced tea, pineapple fried rice, and mango sticky rice. There is not one good thing I can say about any of those orders. There was no flavor in the pad thai and no color. Straight up stir fried noodles with minimal sauce and veggies. The pineapple fried rice barely had any pineapples and they weren't even caramelized... You could tell they just dumped a few pieces from a can. I understand it's possible to mess up a mango sticky rice. But for a restaurant of this Prestige to not get any of my orders right for dinner? Even the dessert? Huge disappointment. The decor at rice violet isn't as nice but the food is damn well consistent and dependable each time. I do not recommend this place. I won't ever be back. Even if I have the biggest Thai craving and no other restaurant is open, I refuse to go to this establishment. read more

I really wanted to like this place. The guy working, I believe his name was Mark, was awesome. As for the food... not so much. I got drunken noodles and the noodles were extremely over cooked to the point that it became mush every time I dug my fork in :(. Every time I come here is an excellent experience. I love the massaman curry and the Thai tea (spiked and regular)! The crab rangoons and other appetizers look and taste delicious. We have had the same waitress the past couple of times but she is always so nice and friendly -- never leaves us waiting too long!
