I have always enjoyed Basil since their first spot on King St in the old Robinsons Bicycle shop. Love the coconut soup, almost always get the Yum Kung shrimp salad. Don't eat here of you like flavor and spice and everything nice. My thai green curry was boring and bland - it didnt taste like curry, or anything at all - just wet rice and a few veggies. It didn't even have the slightest kick, and I ordered it medium spice. My friend ordered the red curry "triple thai hot" for extra spice. He had to add an entire spice dish into it and still didnt get the heat or flavor he was looking for. The portions are much smaller than other thai restaurants, but each dish was about $16 per person. We can't justify returning here to give it another try at that cost. From our experience at Basil, we assume this is an american run business that's attempting to offer a foreign dish, and has greatly missed the mark. My advice: skip this joint and find a nearby "hole in the wall" that serves traditional style thai food instead. read more

Tonight was our second time trying basil. The first time it took our server 15+ minutes before coming to greet us but it was right after their opening so we let it slide. Tonight we went and saw that there was a big table also sitting outside... 30 minutes later and we had only been given water. Decided to leave when we saw a server greeting a table that sat down 20 minutes after us. Disappointing considering we do love the food (only reason for the second star). Second time coming to Basil and I don't think I will be coming back again. The bartender who served us was rude from the moment we sat at her bar. I'm not sure if it was because I was younger than her so she felt like she could talk down to me but it just continued through the meal. Customer service isn't that hard and her attitude alone made me want to get up and walk out. She had a sleeve of tattoos and short hair. I'm only trying to identify her so that hopefully her bosses read this. I gave two stars because what I ordered was so yummy but the food my husband got (pad Thai) was really dry with barely any sauce. We had a $70 meal, a drink each and dessert and for that price I would rather buy the ingredients myself and get drunk at home. read more

Stopped by on the way to the Lion King play and was recommended by my wife. If you are looking to spend money in a nice looking place then this is for you. The food flavor was OK but when the appetizer arrived it was cool, not hot and the main dishes were simply not jaw dropping. For two dishes and an appetizer we spent almost $50 including tip. I'm more conscience about the cost of food and quality then the ambiance and location so I'm glad I came but it is a one time watcher for me. read more

After years of hearing about Basil, but not wanting to travel to downtown or to MTP, I was happy to hear they moved in right next door to my office. Disappointed--pad thai was made with mei fun (skinny noodles) which was unexpected. Also, noodles were clumpy and stuck together--made it unpleasant to eat. Surprised as this was a "specialty dish" on the menu. It's a nice restaurant, though, and seemed very busy with happy people. The atmosphere looked awesome and the drinks seemed delicious. Unfortunately I ordered takeout and could not enjoy that. Instead, I waited 40 minutes past the scheduled time for my pickup order, despite being assured it would only be 10 minutes late. I was quite excited once I received my food after their supposed closing time and still had high hopes for eating it once I got home. Instead, I consumed the most bland food I've ever had. The sauce that came with my green curry had the consistency of water and tasted like nothing. A $17 meal that was simply rice, some veggies, and a "green curry sauce" that was just water with a hint curry paste. I also ordered a pad see yew noodle dish that was also pretty bland with a hint of spice. Not what I was expecting, but probably won't order takeout from here again. Wouldn't mind trying to dine in though to get the full experience. read more

Attended a birthday party celebration here. It was our first time eating at Basil. I ordered the vegetable medley with shrimp and my husband ordered the garlic chicken with shrimp added. We also got the steak satay as an appetizer. Everything was delicious. Our drinks stayed filled and our server was attentive without being intrusive. The decor was clean and beautiful. The Thai tea and spring rolls are wonderful! I got the green curry and was very unimpressed with the flavor.

We are new to the area and so this was our first time here. Very nice inside but chilled to meat locker temperatures like many restaurants. The green curry we got had a very good flavor but had too much tofu and hardly any veggies. Also, weirdly the rice was undercooked. We eat out from Thai alot and have never had undercooked rice until now. We would have shared this directly with our server, but he never asked how our food was. Hopefully this gets fixed asap. read more

I love Basil. I realize there's only 3 stars and I'll explain. I've never had a complaint about the taste or quality of the food. My husband & I always enjoy our meals. We do carry out, so I can't speak much to the customer service side of it. However the reason for 3 stars is due to the quantity & prices. They're on the high end. The lunch portions are the exact same size as the dinner (they come in the same takeout box), yet there's a difference of $6+ between the two services?? For carry out. That's a little absurd. The prices are what keep us from ordering as much as we would like. read more

This location is a mess. Ordered a single entree takeout... waited an hour for it be "ready to be picked up". Then showed up 5 minutes prior to the "ready time" to wait another 35 minutes before I was finally handed my meal. My husband and I love basil!! Every time we go we always get the same thing. We start off with the Larb chicken (lettuce wraps). We then get the Tom Kha Gai (Chicken Coconut) tureen with a side of rice.. My husband and I tell ourselves every time we are going to try something different and then we both end up getting the Pad Thai. It's just so good! Went to Basil's with 5 coworkers (all teachers) today. Got there at 12:35 and we placed our order immediately. 1:05 server came by to fill water glasses and I asked what was taking so long, he said a large party placed an order before ours but it would be out soon. 1:20 asked what was taking our order so long, he said that they only have two woks and it was being made and would be out quickly. 1:35, still no food. The waiter kept apologizing but really didn't seem to care. Finally we all got up and just left. How ridiculous! Will never ever come here again. This is not a way to run a business. read more

We are locals to the area. Basil is one of our favorite restaurants. We have enjoyed so many times over our last 12 years in Charleston. Beware, this restaurant is different from Mount Pleasant and Downtown. Placed an order 1/2/21 at 5:05pm. Number called (843) 225-8161. Ordered 2 pad thais, coconut soup, wontons. Was told 30-40 minute wait time. Man on phone said to park in lot shared with Stems & Skins. Showed up to pick up order at 5:35. Manager said they had not received the order. She said they would rush the order. Went to the car because I had a 3 year old toddler with me. When I went back in to collect the order only 2 items were in the bag. I didn't realize this until I got back to the car. I called to notify them the order was not complete. She said they could rush the last 2 items and it would take an additional 15 minutes. Anyways. What was suppose to be an easy night with takeout turned into a disaster at this restaurant. We have eaten so many times at Mount Pleasant and Downtown and had take out from these Basils and never had a problem. Decided to try Park Circle because it is closer to home. Everything was clearly off this evening...from the ordering to the kitchen staff. An order placed at 5:05...took nearly 2 hours complete. Very poor service. Waitress made my family and I feel unwelcomed by being short and rude. After she was short with us before, we had a general question about how long an order was taking, that must have been more than she wanted to handle, so she offered her manager. I never raised my voice or requested a manager. This was only done because she knew he didn't gIve a damn about us as customers either. He showed no empathy or concern for the negative experience we were havIng. DO NOT go to this Basil. Go somewhere else where the employees treat you with care and respect. read more

This restaurant just opened in January. It used to be Lotus, a Vietnamese fusion place (which had incredible food). When it reopened as Basil, I went with high expectations for service and food. The first time in, I experienced VERY slow mediocre service and the food was OK. If you like Thai food, I had a less traditional pad Thai. Portions were small compared to a smaller less commercialized restaurant. But those things would cause me to give a 3 star rating. I decided to give it a second shot, as a resident of park circle. I walked from my apartment with my small dog to meet some friends and when I got there I was informed that I could not sit outside with my Dog. At an outside table on a Monday night with no other outside guests in a very dog friendly community, I was not allowed to sit with my dog. read more
